Definitely one to look forward to, but so far, it is just standard fare. A classic Korean series with family relationships and revenge themes mirroring dramas, it has a few hinga going for it. A level-headed protagonist who is seeking to become the strongest t escape his oppressive (and rather inhumane) clan. That's it. That's the entire series.

None of the side characters are truly worth mentioning. The action is decent at best, while the easy cheats he gets are quiet confusing. It's ok if he got them because of rebirth... more>> related memories, but when he gets them due to random butterfly incidents within the first 2 arcs... The plot armour is plenty thick.

The entire world is set in a weird place where clans are more powerful than empires. These clans themselves are pretty inhumane. There is a lot of orld building left to be done, but while this entire premise might feel fascinating, it comes off as rather generic due to the lack of interesting characters placed in this world.

I am rating this a 3 for now, but I hope that the author stays bold and actually tries to go in a fresh direction in he future. Otherwise, this may end up as just a 2-star series. <<less

Only 10 chapters into it, but it's the best novel I have ever seen. Maybe because of great translation, maybe because it's placed in magical, medieval setting, which is my favourite. MC is smart and strong, but still not OP (at least for now). Great humor, interesting story.

There's only one thing I don't like. Translations come out kidna slow, when the chap ends, you just want MOAR!!!

PROS

  • This novel is more plot-driven. I usually prefer a novel with a MC and his comrades beat the enemies together then their relationship naturally develop throughout the story as they experience adversaries together (ofc it would be better if the balance between the plot & character relationships are good) but I did enjoy reading this novel despite it being more focused on the plot that's why I included it in the pros list.
  • Varied story arcs making the story not boring
  • Enemies are not third-rates.
  • MC doesn't always win his battles, which makes sense since his opponents are almost always 2 or more higher levels above his prowess. It's a fresh breathe in the air among the countless novels with OP MC always overpowering enemies that are supposedly leagues above them. It also makes the battles a bit more thrilling cause you don't know what will happen — although of course, the MC doesn't die because the story will obviously end if he does.
  • Enemies to allies (not really a fan of this trope but surprisingly, I liked it in this story)
CONS

  • Author likes foreshadowing a bit too much.
  • Character relationships weren't done naturally. Their bonds formed too fast; thus, they seem shallow and don't invoke any emotion in me.
  • Narration is more on tell than show.
  • There are too many explanations and thoughts during battles which make them longer than they're supposed to be and arduous to read.
  • MC relies too much on hunches rather than confirming the information.
  • Supporting characters aren't that fleshed-out. Some have a bit of personality but they aren't distinctive enough to leave impressions on me. Once I finish reading this novel, I'd probably forget them instantly. They're that unremarkable.
  • There were some descriptives about some characters' physical appearances in the initial chapters but the author quickly gave up on them that's why I don't have a clue on what most characters actually look like.
  • Sites with proper english translation have either slow updates or only have less than half of the entire novel fully translated in English. I have come across daotranslation with the entire novel translated in MTL but it's too horrendous for me to bear. I'd rather wait for more properly translated chapters than suffer from brainrot.
Anyway, I rate this 4 stars for now despite having more cons because I personally enjoyed the story.

It is a good novel in overall. It has powerful characters and also family dispute. If you are looking for novel that doesn't have unnecessary romantic or female characters dependent on MC and harem then this novel is for you. I have read it up to the latest chapters and I can say that you will definitely like this novel. I don't say all the 1059 chapters are good. There will be some boring chapters and you want to drop it but it is worth the time. Every novel has... more>> there bad phases, so will see those in this also, and this also has everything you can ask from a fantasy novel with magic and sword.
Spoiler

Gods, demons, Phoenix, beastmen, dragons, regression, powerful characters (MC's father is my favourite character even though he is mentioned in handful of chapters), swords, magic, different dimensions. I have uploaded this novel on my website but unable to upload it here. You can read it there if you want. You can get link from the spoiler form.

This is an amazing story. Very well executed, perfectly balanced story telling where the MC earns all of his powers and there are no undeserved power-ups. So far, there seems to be a hint of romance but no indication of a harem (which is just the way I like it), and the story is building up quite nicely in terms of plot development.

There is a paid translation on a reading app as well, where they have translated up to 120+ chapters and update regularly, so that is much appreciated.

I liked the premise but felt the author took a more generic turn than I would of preferred. Even if this looks like a negative review, I would recommend reading. It starts with the MC navigating a cartoonish villainous family on the second attempt. It's interesting in how nuanced the interactions have to be and how he always has to walk on a knife's edge due to his secrets. There are a few moments in the story where you can feel the suspense or shock. However quickly the MC leaves... more>> the family and goes out into the world. A lot of tension is lost and it quickly feels like a generic adventure plot. The family still matters but are rarely involved. I likely would of preferred a tighter story as it currently lacks goals and structure. I would also like to state that there is a legal English dub on an app and I think the translations are very well done and worth the money. <<less

I feel like a lot of these KR novels that get adapted to a manhwa are just pretty bad in novel form. This novel overall was pretty generic and dull, using some cliche plot tropes other than some base settings. The fast change of pace in the story which fits comic form, doesn't in writing, especially with how much it was done here. The negatives of the story stood out a lot less when getting spoonfed the contents so I can't recommend the novel

Horrid.

Absolutely dreadful.

I dont give shite about plot armor or power creep. Its the attitude of the characters.

He supposedly contracted with God of Shadows (another Solo Leveling rip off) - okay. But his supoosed alt name is "The Infinite." How convinient. He also happens to contract the strongest dragon. Okay. Sure. But why does dragon have the most annoying chracteristic ever? Why is he given humane characteristic? And why is he boning fkn Nanny? I cant. Its just weird. Its an animal like a million yrs old. Acts like douche with... more>> d!ck permanenntly stuck between his a$cheek

MC just acts his age. You thought his regressed age? Oh no. Some 30 yr old man larping as 15 year old, acting like pubecent is absolutely off putting. I fkn hate the fact he acts like he is genius lol. But thats what I signed up for with regressed novels. Cant blame the author, its the trope. Okay. Sure. But what the fk is that moral compass? Whats his chracter? It doesnt exist. There is no character. Even your below avg DND group can keep a better character consistency. Evil? Yes. Compassinate? Yes. That is not character. Its just author stuck between making his character edgy and "good" at the same time. Just no.

Lastly his family. Cruel, and vicious. Tried to kill MC many times. At first I thought father had many wives. But its just one mother putting her children against each other, even encourage killing another. Okay sure. That totally makes sense right? There were many histories of imperial children fighting against another. But MC just refuses to kill another. Perhaps I havent read the entire thing, and he does later.. But its absolutely off putting. Its like he had been ab*sed in his past, even to the point of believing he had been poisened by his sibling. So where is hatred? Its gone. The sypnosis is clickbait. Its all clickbait. Hatred is not real. MC doesnt have a character. <<less

OP MC but he has annoying companions. No tension since one companion is super OP while the other is also pretty strong, while both are very loyal to MC. The dragon spends half his time whining about stuff. The nanny is pretty cool though.

Romance: maybe some foreshadowing with the ice girl?

Dropped this because some random child character shows up which I never enjoy reading, no doubt that the kid has some powerful parent and MC will be blackmailed into helping them.

Chapter-110.

I am at latest chapter and all I can say is that it is worth your time. It is story about a pitiful man who got harrassed by his family at every turn due to being untalented, as you can interpret by the title of the novel.

MC's regression is not explained but I think it will be explained later.

... more>> World building and side characters are not yet to be explored but I think it has potential to be interesting.

MC is not that unique if your are veteran in this field- that is, being cool headed, cold blooded to enemies and warm hearted to alies, growing overpowered that everyone will be gawking at you and yes future knowledge which gets useless as the story progresses so he is not that unique and it sometimes feels cliche.

Still it's 95 percent much better than the other tr*sh which are all over sites.

So, if your are wondering whether to start this or not then definitely start it. <<less

I love this novel. So far, the plot is a bit different than other cliche novel. The conflict continuously raising and the enemies getting stronger from person to person. The MC not only have enemy from outside, but also from his crazy family. Man, I do really mean his family is crazy! All of they have a cold-hearted side to other member because of throne succesion. Home doesn't feel like home, hiks.

The MC's character is hard working and intelligent, but also rational. Sometimes he makes a questionable decision, this is... more>> not only for other character in the novel, but also for me as the reader. And in the end that was a good decision. If I conclude his character until ch514, he is an ambitious person.

If you like light novel that has an MC who doesn't op from start or maybe op but still facing hard time and sometimes get lost, I recommend this for you. Take a seat and have an enjoy reading time! <<less

So far, so good

Only thing I'm worried about is side characters and most importantly, our main character wavering from his goal. Don't forget that this family had forsakened you and killed you, so stop smiling and being so smug so damn much. I'm still suspicious of Luna because she didn't help him the first go around when he was weak I'm not sure how I feel about her. I hope Jin slaughters his family like it was suggested when he wanted revenge. It seems like he now wants to rule... more>> over them which sucks because the premise and beginning make it seem like he wanted to change the way to ruthless family operated. <<less

Here we are again.

Reviewing a novel that had a decent premise, but a sub-par execution.

As per usual when it comes to eastern novels.

I will say, before the criticism starts, that at the very least, the author did attempt to develop the personalities of their supporting cast. So at least that's something.

But that something isn't enough to save the novel from its downward spiral into a generic regression power fantasy.

A few things stuck out to me, as far as down-sides go:

  1. I don't know why authors use this [Level]-Star [Occupation] system. Because at some point it always devolves into "HAH! My 5-Star MC can take on FIFTY 7-Star Knights!" or some such nonsense, which makes the entire system rather pointless as far as power scaling goes. Pretty much, the level system is more like an artificial benchmark system, specifically tailored for the MC's progression, rather than a system for classifying people on a world-wide scale, which makes it meaningless when evaluating threatening situations.
  2. As with most, if not all, regression novels, the author eventually reverts to barfing out ideas, without proper set-ups or foreshadowing, which boils down to "BTW, this is a thing now, teehee." If you've read other regression novels, you'll know what I mean by this. A lot of the arcs, by the time I stopped reading, were becoming really messy to the point where it was becoming a chore to read because I was consuming words just to consume words. And at that point, you have to ask yourself why you're doing this to yourself or who are you doing this for?
  3. And I guess the last point I want to hit is that the progression of the MC is simply boring to read. A lot of it consists of time skip summaries, such as 'he trained this skill for a month' or 'he dueled and lost to this person 90, 000 times before he grasped something' or other similar sentences. As I said before... Why am I putting myself through this?

I can't do it anymore. I can't keep reading this novel. I do not recommend.

The only reason it's getting two stars is for the supporting cast, while not being stellar, at least had some personality and weren't just fodder units.

Warning: This review might not entirely be fair. I am focusing on a very specific aspects - the characters - while ignoring pretty much everything else. The score 2/5 is deserved from what I read until now though.

I am still in the early part but damn... At first I thought it was interesting since it is pretty similar to a novel I really like (reincarnated assassin is a genius swordsman), but there is one major difference.

Runcandels - the MC family - are just worse than demons. Demons at least have... more>> standards. Them, though? Well...

In this novel, characters are tr*sh. I mean, tr*sh both in how they are written and tr*sh in their personality. At first, I didn't mind. I thought it was the point. Those characters, that fcked up family, is supposed to be hatable. They are supposed to be awful people. They are supposed to be psychotic bastard with no redeeming qualities, s*upid values, ridiculous thought and overinflated opinions of themselves.

I thought it was the point. Until I started to realize... That the author thought they were actually sympathetic and likable character. They are not written to be hatable on purpose. The author genuinely thinks those are good likable characters. That's just the level of characters that are present in the story.

Now, maybe you like a story where 80% of the characters are just psycho. I personally need some more normally adjusted humans too.

Example of psychotic behavior that are apparently normal and fine by author standard:

Spoiler

-Father praise his 7-year old son for torturing and almost killing his 9-year old son.

-Father heavily encourage his children to relentlessly try to kill each other. Father pretty much blames the 9-years old son for not trying to kill his brother back. But that's normal! That's just... how it goes in our family, right!

-Mother agrees, of course, though she might show one day of pretend sadness when one die because mothers are such soft-hearted creatures.

-Abandoning and exiling your child because they are not as strong as you want them to be is just "accepting reality", it is not a bad thing at all.

-You are the strongest family in the continent but cares so little about your children that you don't even notice when one is cursed by a mage spell. Seriously? Wtf???

-Everything they go through until 10 years old (and arguably, even after) is pretty much child ab*se. In a way, no wonder all the familyh members are psycho. Anyone would be, raised like that. And they somehow find the way to claim it is for the best of the children. They literally get nothing from this awful treatment, not even strength. (well, except the MC who obviously find a way to cheat the system... but he is the exception not the rule). Remember the 9-year old son mentioned above? The author loves repeating that they become mass mu*derer when they reach 11 years old or something.

-Eldest child suddenly visit youngest 9 years after the youngest is born. It is literally their first meeting because eldest didn't give a fck before then. Eldest is genuinely sad that the youngest does not show sibling affection and starts acting pitiful. Youngest starts comforting eldest and is genuinely happy that eldest cares for him. Eldest promises to always care for youngest. Let's forget the previous 9 years (37 if including previous life) where you did not even care about his existence. Oh, but I see, it's not you did not care, it's just..................a misunderstanding!

-Etc

[collapse]

Yeah, the MC was pretty much tortured and abandoned by all those people in his previous life but in new life all is fine and dandy right and he wants to become the head of house and give them prosperity... because?

That's such a boring and awful way of dealing with it.

Oh, and the MC himself, which is obviously an important characters... Inconsistent behavior. Kinda boring, but kinda standard too. Sometimes he is very soft, sometimes he is very ruthless, there seems to be no logic to his behavior. All in all, he is just the lucky guy who is supremely talented in every areas and somehow loved by everyone that matter after regressing and who will randomly act in whatever way suits the plot. His objectives and goals (when any are presented) just feel shallow and hard to relate with and he has the emotional intelligence of a composed and methodical serial killer. Which does make him a great fit for his family. <<less

Got fed up after binging it until here.

It gets increasingly unrealistic, stuff keeps piling up until it loses meaning altogether.

The characters are mostly ok, I can't stand murakan though... everytime he appeared I wanted to skip.

... more>> The MC is inconsistent in my opinion. He's supposedly OP, his faults are excused for body age, but as a reader that doesn't work. He's over 40 in theory, and intelligent. But he messes up in things that are convenient for plot progression, not logic.

The world building is a mix of things and it turns into a mess because it's not well executed.

I'm more of a rofan person than action. I need a better plot to stay in this genre. <<less

I noticed that people rate this lower than usual because they found this type of character bland and boring. Well, it's true MC is way ahead compared to his peers since he regressed and have the advantage of all he learned in his past life. He is also OP, but this is way, way better compared to the usual trope of novels.

The story plot was actually good. The pacing, the characters, the powers and the world building - it is really nice to read. MC's personality is also very interesting.... more>> He is not too kind, not too cruel and not s*upid as well. He knew how to make use of his knowledge and gifted by luck on his second chance of life. Magicians, dragon, gods, human contractors, royalty and imperial schemes - these are some of what you will encounter while reading.

I understand that some of us are fed up on cliche storyline. It is good to expand our search and look for better novels. But there is just something on this one that I can't give up on and made me waited for several months to come back for an update. And the wait is worth it. It's fun to read.

Thus, I recommend you also give this a try to read. Ciao~ <<less
