summary from another site

Carrying a heart full of thoughts and courage, Tang Yuhui embarks on an unknown journey.

Through the mist, he sees snow-capped mountains, surrounded by flowing clouds and accompanied by the wild winds of the open plains.

Following a deep, distant call, he runs with all his might.

He thinks, even if he can never reach it, he must at least touch that ever-changing cloud—chasing the dreamlike glow of ochre red.

“Go on, you’ve caught up.”

— So the “iceberg” was warm after all

To start, this is genuinely a beautifully written novel, with really poignant metaphors and gorgeous depictions of nature. I found myself rereading so many lines just from how beautiful they were, and I really loved how the author tied together the title with the novel plot. While I am a bit upset that this novel has been picked up by someone who clearly uses MTL, I chose to read from Changpei instead, where it is actually fully free to read, so this review won't have any comment on the overall... more>> translation quality, but from what I glanced at it wasn't the worst, rather just a shame for a novel with writing this beautiful to have been MTL'd.

As the novel is quite short, there are a few places where I felt the pacing was a bit off, but the overall plot progression was generally cohesive and understandable. Where I didn't feel quite satisfied though was in the relationship progression itself. This is a bit of a personal problem for me, but I really don't enjoy when feelings aren't equal between a couple up to the very end, and these two had a big discrepancy in their emotional states throughout the entire novel, which made me doubt the ML's feelings in particular even to the end. The MC falls extremely quickly, and he falls so intensely that I honestly never really felt the ML could match his feelings. Throughout the novel, ML was constantly blank faced and would reject MC over and over. Despite making the first move to kiss MC, he would then push MC away when the other wanted to get closer, just behaving in very confusing and inconsistent ways.

There's a side plot that does try to explain a bit of ML's personality, but I found it to be a bit surface level and uninteresting in developing his character, and did not really empathize too much with his minimal backstory, as he himself has no empathy either. I feel like the author had an idea of what she wanted to portray with the male lead, but it really did not come across sufficiently enough for my taste. He's a supposedly heartless character, and while throughout the novel he does experience moments of heart pain around the MC, he always ends up expressionless and emotionless. There's no consistent feeling of character development, and the ending really happened too abruptly for me to feel a shift in his feelings towards MC from indifference to love.

The overall tone of the novel is much more depressing and melancholic than I expected, and it could have been quite interesting as a psychological novel, but I feel the ML didn't get as much development as I would have liked to explain why his personality and emotions were so stilted the entire time. He seems to have just been born without many emotions, but it really isn't expanded on how this has impacted him beyond the surface level of not really building any lasting connections in his life. The MC however is a very full and vivid character, and I definitely loved him a lot. His characterization really carries this novel for me, with how intensely he feels and how his every interaction with the ML carried such heavy emotion.

Emotionally, I did feel a bit detached from the characters around the midpoint, as their relationship really was too exhausting and stressful for me to empathize even with the MC, and I didn't cry nearly as much as I expected to. There was only one moment in the midpoint that had me tearing up, and the ending I honestly was just laughing in shock because I couldn't believe that ML was going to get away with being an utter as*hole to the MC for the entire novel and still end up with a happy ending. On a slightly more spoiler-y issue with the ending:

Spoiler

After all the rejection and pining, to be told that oh ML actually was chasing back for a while after they broke up, all in just a few short paragraphs wasn't enough for me. Literally up until the very last chapter, the ML is shown to be cold and unfeeling without barely an explanation (not that there is much an explanation even to the end), and I personally found every interaction between him and MC stressful, especially when MC would kiss him and he would just blankly stare back like a block of ice. There was no groveling except for a single "I'm sorry" and he basically just very briefly acknowledges that he's made MC suffer for years with his commitment issues. It really just is not my kind of couple dynamic, and it truly made the novel difficult for me to read to the end.

[collapse]

Despite me not enjoying the romance though, this is still a well written novel, and I feel any novel that makes me feel such intense feelings of disgust as I did towards the ML deserves a decent enough rating. The reason I'm deducting stars is for lack of character development on ML's part, and just an overall disappointment in the romance and plot, as I honestly did not feel very much for the characters and their relationship at the end. The author says herself that this is her version of romance, and not to comment about it, so I'll just say it's not my kind of romance here. Personally, I would be cautious in recommending this novel, but it is quite short so not at all a waste to give it a shot! <<less

Okay, so I'm writing a review because no body else has yet too.

First off, this novel is really good as it has vivid descriptions of scene, the translator has done a really beautiful job too. I had binge-read this whole novel and it was really good. Although my reason for only a four star rating would be that I wasn't really ready for the tears to hit me.. Like this novel had me crying, I thought it would be a sweet and light read but no. This novel almost made... more>> me think it was a BE but let me assure you guys it is definitely a HE.

The translater was also awesome, it's from someone who I have been following lately, so you can rest assured.

So, if you guys want to read something with well displayed emotions and a good scenic visit too then this one is for you. Do give it a try! (I don't usually write novel reviews so hopefully I didn't spoil any fun for you. Forgive me if I did tho.) <<less

I didn’t fully understand some parts of the storyline, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying this short story. Maybe if it were a bit longer, things would be better explained, with stronger connections between certain actions and the overall plot.

The ML’s “sad backstory” felt like it was just there to justify him being cold and unapproachable (kind of unnecessary, since that could’ve just been part of his personality)

The pacing was really good and steady up until the final arc, where I lost my connection with the story and... more>> the characters.

Everything was well-written and really vivid, the descriptions of the scenery were really on point.

I definitely recommend giving it a try, you won’t lose on it <<less
