He regressed to the first day of confinement.

4 years ago, Kwon Jae-jin, an ordinary person, appeared as the only guide for the S-class esper Seo Eui-woo.

Seo Eui-woo kidnapped him and demanded that he be guided without consent.

“Shall we check now? I wonder if you are a guide that matches me or not.”

“Hurts, it hurts, ah, ngh! Ugh…… Stop……!”

“See, you can do guiding on me…….”

Seo Eui-woo’s crazy behavior, which seemed ruthless at first glance, had a good reason, and after 4 years that felt like war, Jae-jin eventually understood and accepted Seo Eui-woo.

Not only that, he was taken in by Seo Eui-woo’s persistent love offensive and their relationship developed romantically!

They lived happily ever after……!

……It would’ve been great if it had ended with such a happy ending.

One sunny day, a gate in the yard burst, and Kwon Jae-jin got caught in it. He died with his limbs torn to pieces.

BAD ENDING.

That was the story of Kwon Jae-jin’s first life before returning to this point.

I actually really liked the story, especially because both Kwon Jae-jin and Seo Eui-woo were well-written characters.

There are some aspects of the world-building that felt a bit lacking (like the absence of a typical guide character) but maybe the side stories will expand on that.

Seo Eui-woo is one of my favorite Black Flag male leads I've ever read. He's complex in a horrific, unhinged, yet strangely pitiful way. Kwon Jae-jin helps stabilize him, but honestly, in real life, I wouldn't wish someone even 10% like Seo Eui-woo on my worst... more>> enemy. <<less

This is hands down one of my favorite KR BL webnovels of all time. I understand the low ratings because their relationship starts out VERY rocky and there's a lot of noncon involved in the beginning, but their development over the course of the novel is phenomenal. The growth that both characters, although mostly on Seo Euiwoo's part, goes through cannot be understated. That's not to say that Kwon Jaejin doesn't have his own baggage that he has to deal with.

The plot is that Kwon Jaejin was an ordinary man... more>> until one day, he came across esper Seo Euiwoo while on his way home, gets exposed as a guide (a "mutant" aka a late awakener), and gets kidnapped and imprisoned by him for four years. It takes four years of back-and-forth fighting and development until they finally get to an understanding of each other and even start dating, but then a gate (like a portal) opens up in Seo Euiwoo's mansion one day out of nowhere while Euiwoo wasn't home, and Jaejin dies. The story takes place when Jaejin goes back in time to four years ago.

Spoiler
    • First off, being a mutant means the government wants you dead, straight up. The fact of the matter is that Jaejin and Euiwoo's chance encounter was mainly due to the fact that Euiwoo, the only S-Class Esper in Korea, couldn't be guided by anyone who wasn't S-Class and Jaejin is the first S-Class guide to ever exist. The only reason why the government wants "mutants" dead is only because they can't control them. You see, normally once a baby is tested to be a guide or esper, they literally get forcefully kidnapped into the military and raised as a weapon. It's obviously very shitty. As such, they're not really raised with any morality, just raised to be military dogs who follow orders. I get that it doesn't really excuse Euiwoo's actions, but it makes sense why the novel is centered around his development as a human being.
    • Following that, the main reason why Euiwoo kidnaps and keeps Jaejin prisoner in his mansion is because the government is extremely likely to find Jaejin and kill him if Euiwoo lets him go back home. Even Jaejin himself is aware of this, but he still hates it.
[collapse]

So, yes, even though the couple in question is extremely problematic, I still can't help but love the story anyways. Jaejin's grief over his lover, the twenty-four year old Seo Euiwoo that he left behind after regressing, his fear that he was "killing him" by changing the timeline. A big portion of he novel is Jaejin actually learning to live with this grief, trying to find a way to move forward. He's rational, but he's also very compassionate to those around him, which you don't really get to see until sh*t hits the fan in the second half of the novel because the first half is spent in isolation, but it really comes through in the end.

I could spoil so many of the twists, especially the big one that left my jaw hanging wide open, but I choose not to. Reading the novel the first time was such a ride because both leads kept needing to develop for the sake of the plot, they kept needing to adapt to every new situation and kept needing to fight at every moment just to live happily. Like, my god. THEY ARE FIGHTING HARD!!!!

I know the ML will be a huge turn off to a lot of readers, and I understand why 100000% but Euiwoo really grew on me as the novel went on, and even though he's totally crazy, I think the MC is also a tad crazy

Like, Jaejin definitely gives off "I Will Fix Him Vibes" at the beginning but as the novel goes on, you realize that Seo Euiwoo definitely corrupted him a little LMAOOOO Jaejin became just as equally obsessed over Euiwoo and the commenters were SCREAMING for itttttt. It's only fun when both are on the same level after all ;)

Spoiler

BTW they definitely have a lot of freaky s*x. like seriously... not even gonna go into detail. I'm sure you can imagine it yourself if you're a veteran of this genre.

[collapse]

I will always defend this novel even knowing how problematic it is because their development will always be *chef's kiss* to me. The novel explored so many unique and interesting ideas from a regression + worldbuilding standpoint that I can't not love it for what it is... Author please release more side stories TT_TT I love them too much...

Edit blurb w/ major spoilers:

Spoiler

I have a lot of thoughts about this novel and I'll still love and defend it to the very end. I actually reread it recently so I have a more fresh take on my mind. Anyways, I disagree about the author trying to make the reader forgive ML about all the noncon, I think the author does have a decent amount of self awareness when it comes to the unhealthy parts of their dynamic. A lot of revealed information just gets drip-fed since Kwon Jaejin isn't the most reliable narrator. The author makes it very apparent that a lot of Seo Euiwoo's actions are unforgiveable and inexcusable, especially the big one later on. A lot of Kwon Jaejin's built-up and suppressed spite comes back when it gets revealed that Seo Euiwoo wiped his memories of his childhood and family. And I don't think Kwon Jaejin truly ever forgives Seo Euiwoo for doing that (even after things get resolved), at least there's never any indication of it. But I wholeheartedly believe he can still love Seo Euiwoo despite that. Is it realistic? Not really. But I don't read fiction for it to be realistic xd

I admit that a lot of the novel is pretty contrived, like Seo Euiwoo is OP to the point that the whole novel's conflict could be resolved if Seo Euiwoo just used his S-class esper powers to take over Korea or something, but I kinda love the fact that the novel is more about his development and understanding what it means to be a human being, and learning that there's more to life than just plain violence.

I don't like noncon, but I don't drop novels just because it's present. I don't like the novel because it has noncon either, I like the novel because Seo Euiwoo and Kwon Jaejin have a complex relationship forced by a dystopian esper/guide type setting, even the KR commenters said things like that the main couple would've had a good relationship from the start if circumstances were completely different. But that's not this story, and nobody is forcing you to read a story that has noncon present. I'm particularly flabbergasted at the idea that a story could ever "justify" noncon in the first place... not that this story was ever trying to do that lol. We can disagree all day about the interpretation of their power dynamics (I think Kwon Jaejin stands his ground quite a lot and is able to draw boundaries that are followed by Euiwoo) and that's just a agree-to-disagree moment, I'm moreso confused at the blatant virtue signaling other readers over a r-19 bl smut novel that came with the appropriate trigger warnings. At least it did in the original source material.

Sorry for being a total Shen Yuan (mentally ill reader moment) but it's baffling to think us reviewers have to be given a lecture in another review about consent when that's not our responsibility. I'm just a guy who read a novel, I don't know why we're being told noncon is bad when yeah, clearly it is, we know, thanks.

If you like stories about being trapped in an abusive trauma-bonded relationship, this one is for you! As with most Korean smut, r*pe and confinement are par for the course. This is especially unsurprising considering the setting is "sentinel/guide", which at this point might as well just be "r*pist/r*pe-victim". Actually, this is the first guideverse story I've read because I've been avoiding it as it always seems to come with tags like "R*pe Victim Becomes Lover", "R*pe", "s*xual ab*se", etc. It's a fantasy setting seemingly designed to justify non-con so... more>> that readers can enjoy relationships predicated on r*pe, so it doesn't really appeal to me. Of course, there's plenty of excuse making by fans for this, like minimizing Seo Eui-woo r*ping Kwon Jae-jin until he is "bleeding from both ends" by calling it a "rocky start" to their relationship. These excuses are understandable because it's clear that right from the beginning of the story the author wants you to forgive Eui-woo with nonsense like "nor was it Eui-woo's fault that Jae-jin was forced to live locked up in his home". According to the author, Eui-woo is actually his savior because mutant awakeners are executed, even though mutant guides have no psychic abilities and pose no threat to society (lol, awesome world building going on here). This also makes Jae-jin seem insane because I think if most people were offered the choice between being 'r*ped forever' and 'death', they'd choose death. The author also describes Jae-jin's response to his rapist as "excessively hostile" (f*cking lmao).

Anyway, the writing is lazy. Both the world-building and characterization of Jae-jin are all over the place and many elements are obviously invented just for convenience or superficial shock value. For example, in one chapter it's written that "Jae-jin even tried killing that bastard at one point... He had considered su*cide", and then in the same chapter "Anyway, after a string of dramatic incidents involving swearing, tears, pleading, bloodshed, su*cide attempts..." So, was it just ideation or did Jae-jin make an attempt? If he made attempts then how did he fail? It doesn't seem like he was deprived of the means to do it successfully. After experiencing his first time being violently r*ped again, he wakes up with access to a syringe, kitchen knives, and any number of possible su*cide aides. Really, Jae-jin isn't actually suicidal in any capacity. It's just something the author wrote to increase the sense of angst in the plot, but it doesn't work because Jae-jin is already completely acclimatized to r*pe and confinement. That's why, despite enduring four years of r*pe, confinement, and being reborn to the exact point in time where his life of indefinite imprisonment and r*pe begins, he doesn't experience traumatic shock or otherwise shut down - Jae-jin just shrugs it all off with "it's no use lamenting over the injustices or hoping the situation will change". Jae-jin actually thinks he's "fortunate to have the opportunity" because now he can 'tame' Eui-woo. What this seems to mean in practice is teaching Eui-woo to r*pe him less violently so he can live in confinement comfortably and spend Eui-woo's lavish savings. This completely undercuts any angst or tension as something as serious as a su*cide attempt just becomes a tantrum. As Jae-jin tells Eui-woo "I just bit my tongue (off) in a fit of anger, I didn't really intend to die. I knew you would heal it with your healing factor anyway. I thought you would listen to me if I did this". It also makes the story boring because Jae-jin has no interests, hobbies, or aspirations beyond making as home out of his hell. He cooks, engages in retail therapy, and feels sad that even though the man currently r*ping him is the same as his former r*pist, they don't have the same relationship. Truly... an emotionally compelling character lmao.

Also, to clarify for anyone who might be confused, it doesn't stop being r*pe just because it's not violent, because the victim 'enjoys' it, or because they are 'dating'. Jae-jin can agree to having s*x with Eui-woo, but he can't consent because he has no power - if Eui-woo wants to force it then Jae-jin has no means to stop him or hold him accountable.

Spoiler

Apparently someone took this comment as a personal attack? Damn, if they weren't right when they say a hit dog hollers.

  • Firstly, I don't care if you like r*pe fantasies and you enjoy how s*xual violence is used by the author to make the story dark and gritty. Where in my review does it say "you are a bad person if you enjoyed this"? If reading my review made you feel guilty, that's your business. A story you like got criticized and that upset you, okay, so follow your own advice and don't read things that upset you. Instead doing this, you wrote an incoherent defense of the story and about being lectured to and virtue signalling. Are you high on PCP? Did you forget your meds? I'm reviewing KBL guideverse smut on novelupdates, please tell me who in the world would look at this as virtuous?
  • Why do people read things they will likely find disagreeable or offensive? Because I'm grown. I am not so childish and pathetic as to cut myself off from the possibility that there can be stories I enjoy and art I appreciate which contains content I might normally find unacceptable. "Don't like, don't read!" is an argument only made by oversensitive fans who want to silence any critical engagement with the stories they like. All I can say is, grow up, not everyone wants to live in a silo like you.
  • You disagree about the author trying to encourage readers to forgive Eui-woo. Okay, proof? In my review there are quotes showing how the author portrays Eui-woo as saving Jae-jin and Jae-jin's reaction to his ab*ser as excessively hostile. I pity you, so let's say they aren't trying to encourage the reader to forgive Eui-woo, but instead are merely providing a context for us to understand Eui-woo's actions. After all Eui-woo is a victim too, being taken as a ward, raised as a weapon, and totally deprived of opportunity to live a normal life. The problem for me is that the author fails to successfully distinguish between explaining and justifying Eui-woo's actions.
  • You might be flabbergasted, but if you used your brain to comprehend the words the author wrote you might understand that Eui-woo's life without guiding, like most espers, is constant pain with the possibility of a violent psychotic break. So the justification for noncon is that guides have a moral duty to ease the suffering of espers and a civic duty to protect the public from psychotic espers. If you can't understand this you should contact a local pre-school and ask for resources on reading comprehension. Don't be ashamed to seek help. It's never too late to learn.
  • You disagree about the interpretation of their power dynamics because Eui-woo respected some of Jae-jin's boundaries. I beg you, proofread your writing. Just prior to making this shoddy argument you wrote that Eui-woo has the power to overturn the korean government, but now you're saying there isn't a power imbalance between him and Jae-jin. You do not understand what an imbalance of power is.
  • You say you don't like noncon, it's the "complex relationship forced by a dystopian esper/guide type setting" that appeals to you. Okay, tell me what the nature of that relationship is? Is it sexual? Is it one with an inherent power difference and unhealthy dependency? So you don't like noncon, you just enjoy reading about relationships which, as required by the setting, must involve discussions about the nature of consent. For me, the complexity of the relationship between a guide and an esper is how they navigate their understanding of consent and how they draw boundaries between the s*x they have as awakeners and the lives they live as ordinary people. Notice how I didn't say this has to include erot*c depictions of violent noncon, so why does the supposedly "complex relationship" between Jae-jin and Eui-woo include it? Your argument is even less compelling when you consider there are plenty of ways to complicate the relationship between romantic leads that aren't predicated on s*xual violence. For example, falling in love with a political hostage from an enemy nation, falling in love with someone who already has a partner, or falling in love with someone with very different lived experiences, among many others. You could have just said "I like this story and despite frequent depictions of SA it has a lot of merits" but instead you point out a lot of the story's flaws and then repeatedly deny that you like noncon even though no one personally accused you of that. Have you heard the saying 'a strong denial is a strong affirmation'. Food for thought.

Sorry you had a complete meltdown in response to my review, but it's baffling to think us reviewers have to witness you publicly filling your diaper when that's not our responsibility. I'm just a guy who reviewed a novel, I don't know why you're telling us you definitely don't like noncon, when yeah, clearly, none of us would have thought you did until you said that, thanks.

I just finished reading the MTL because I cant wait... And I cant believe I actually LOVE THIS?! First, if you want to read this, bear in mind that there's a lot SA. So if you cant accept dat, dont start and complaint later. Go read other lighthearted novel..

The ML is indeed EXTREME. But, you have to understand that he was born and grew up thinking that SA in guiding is a normal thing. The setting for the Espers in this novel is that when they were born, they were... more>> taken by the government and put in military camp to learn to be a killing machine. Common humane sense is not in their mind at all. They are brainwashed to think that SA, injuries and even death is a normal things.

MC is a regressor. After spending a lot of times in the future with ML, he totally understand why the ML is like that, and now he regress, he wanted to tame the ML and have a normal love relationship and life with ML. So even if the ML SA him, instead of getting mad, he tried to coax and teaches ML how to have s*x properly.

You could say that it wasnt easy to teach a killing machine to become a human, but at the end, both MC and ML learn how to live with each other properly.

The ML has a cute and childish way of speaking, while the MC is matured and always give in to the ML, but not in a weak like manner? I mean, when I read the novel, despite being confined, assaulted, I never had a thought that MC is weak hearted. He knows he wants to live with ML, so he never give up in taming the ML.

I think only in the last chapter, ML finally have a stable mind, looking like a normal human. It feels weird when the ML talking seriously because before that I only see him as an immature brat 🤪

There's a lot of smut, but the plot itself is good too, and not that complicated since the story focused more on their relationship.

++ I would definitely reread this again when the translation is all done 😆 <<less

I'm reviewing early cuz I see this novel has way lower stars than expected.

This is a novel with a very fricked up ML. We literally have the tags 'Rpe victim becomes lover' and 'Obsessive love', of course it's fricked up! Why would you expect a healthy relationship from a novel with such tags? (In my opinion we should add Psychological, too.) No, this is about a guy with a fricked up life who fricks someone else up too, and they both somehow end up in a fricked up relationship together... more>> because of the fricked up world. If this is not to your taste, do not read. unfvcktheworld said it all- rocky relationship, no consent, we're not here for sugar and sweets, we're here for pain.

Second warning, this novel is kinky af. I love the kinkiness, it satisfied me to the bone, but know that I am a dirty freak who finds plain ole' love boring. Beware if you like vanilla. Or, um, explore a new world of possibilities (?) lmao.

But if you can stomach such topics, then you cannot deny that the novel is well written. The ML and MC both have reasons for acting the way they do. They act very realistically, and their characters develop so well.

First is MC... oh boy, he's the best shou/uke I have ever seen. Ever. I love him so much. Unlike other novels where the shou is either doted on, or they just cry about their circumstances and don't do anything, this shou is proactive. He has everything together, he's got the mental strength of steel, and he makes the best out of his situation while still remembering to curse at the reason why he's so fricked up. He's relatable and really refreshing and not the standard crybaby MC, he acts like an adult, and he's like 90% the reason why you should read this. Though I hate unequal relationships, especially in romance, he's the reason I continued reading.

As for ML, I actually grew to empathize and pity him over the course of the book. I started to want better for him; of course, his circumstances do not excuse the horrible things he did at the start, but I can just understand why he's such a s*umbag. And the MC does the same; because he knows what the ML's been through, he understands. (Though he does kinda get Stockholm Syndrome later, watching that's fun too.)

A similar novel would be 'Turns out I'm Crazy', if you like this novel, read that; or if you like that novel, try this. Both are beautiful pages of mindfrick that dig at you, the reader. <<less

I never understand when people who don't like dead dove problematic topics hate-read novels clearly labeled as such in the tags, synopsis, previous reviews, etc and leave clearly biased reviews and low ratings. Why bother subjecting yourself to something you know you won't enjoy when all the warnings are in front of you, leave the page and don't go forward.

Anyways, I fully read this a long time ago from the raws due to unfvcktheworld's review and it's what I expected it to be: a twisted problematic story, with a MC... more>> that has Stockholm syndrome and a ML that undergoes character progression from being purposely raised by the govt as an inhuman weapon to someone who grows more human, but it's a story that enticed me nonetheless. The situation between a first life ML and a second life ML was resolved well to me. And despite being a guide in the worst situation, MC never backed down from his greatest want

Read a couple of chapters, felt uncomfortable, decided to drop it, and then I read unfvckthewor's review which convinced me to keep pushing forward! And I'm glad I did!

It's a tough read, especially in the beginning. It wasn't until around chp16 where I finally felt immersed enough and comfortable enough with the characters and premise that I began to enjoy the novel for all it offers.

We see the world from Jae-jin's perspective and it's f*cked up. He knows it's f*cked up, and even Eui-woo recognizes its f*cked up (or at... more>> least that he's not 'normal')

But they're both characters trying to make the best of the shitty world they've either been dropped into or the shitty world they were raised in. And also figuring out what kind of relationship and feelings they have for each other now that they know they can't be separated. (Is it a survival need? Lust? Hate? Resignation? Infatuation stemming from fascination? Love? What kind of love? Etc)

It's kind of a psychological mindf*ck that left me gripping for more as they explore the complexity of all sorts of feelings. And its so well done at making you empathize with Eui-woo, but never condoning his actions. Ever. But then again, how do you go about punishing or guiding someone who was never taught ethics to begin with?

It's hard to describe this novel because the discussion can go on and on. It's really a battle between each other and themselves, over and over again until they come to physical, mental, and emotional compromises. And by the end of the novel, I felt both exhausted and so accomplished at how far they've both come and this was probably one of the best novels I've read this year. I really rooted for the both of them and their future.

Just prepare for a bit of heart wrenching angst. <<less
