On the dawn of a fresh New Year, an ominous figure emerged, shrouded in a guise of an angel but harboring the malevolence of a devil. With a chilling voice, it proclaimed, [Every month, you humans will be thrust into a perilous quest. Your survival hinges on overcoming 20 grueling rounds.]

Suddenly, I found myself ensnared in this dangerous survival game, a grotesque merry-go-round where every turn carried the stench of death. Yet, I was not without any defenses. I possessed an unusual power: the power to regress 100 times, a chance to rewrite my fate.

I stand on the precipice of my final regression, and I swear, ‘This time, I will conquer it. I will emerge victorious.’

I’m no longer the insignificant shuttle that I once was. Today, I shed my former self, the one who had reached the pinnacle of power. Today, I am reborn for the last time as Black Scythe, a rookie player, a novice that once again will be become the Grim Reaper!

I started reading the novel because the webtoon was so interesting. As I continued reading through more than half the novel, I found myself not as excited to read. Still deciding whether or not I'll finish the novel. I'm reading the rest through MTL.

1. The main character is OP. As expected since he's gone through 100 regressions, but he never has any challenges in the story. He always 1 shots everything.

2. No relationship built. I loved his younger brother in the webtoon. But Ryu Won is basically neglected throughout the... more>> whole story. I know the MC is trying his best to live, but I would love to have some family moments. Even the people he's thinking about bringing to the last round, he doesn't really get to know them at all.
Spoiler

in a way I'm surprised people like him so much even though he gives the lowest effort to get to know them since he has the rune of inner thoughts to always know what they're thinking anyways.

[collapse]

3.
Spoiler

There's no hurdle that the MC has to go through at all. As mentioned before he's OP. If there's anyone who's against his greater plan for the last round, he basically kills them off, like Ma Gyeong Rok. Since he wasn't useful anymore, MC just axes him, but ofc keeps his useful fiancée around for the 20th round. If he ever has any issues, there's probably a rune he'll discover that solves his problems or makes him even stronger.

[collapse]

4. Kinda feels like details are a little lacking. Or maybe because I got bored and started paying attention less.

5.
Spoiler

He basically just turns people into s*aves either through using Yamti or using the duel function to make them into s*aves. Kinda boring tbh, and wished there was more psychological manipulation or something.

At first it was beautiful and exciting but after chp 120 the author started to make all characters other than MC s*upid and weak and highlight mc's op

Like the priest and dark knight, former become a mindless s*upid waiting for her prince to save her like a Disney princess syndrome and the latter being a weak follower of MC and can't do a shit.

I read the novel bcs of the manhwa, but the novel is horrible. I already notice the shallowness when I read the first chapter of the manhwa, but I thought it will only be another cliche story, but it's so bad. It seems like it's trying to be ORV and S-Classes That I Raised, but it lacks to ability to do so. It has a decent start, but got worst each chapter.

This novel feels like a harem bait and a self insert by the author. Every female character seems to... more>> fall for MC while every male character is pathetic and acts like lapdogs. MC is super OP while everyone just fails in comparison. He's a strong character among weak people and it doesn't feel impressive to me. It just feels like the author kills every character that has a potential of being strong so the author can make MC become the only strong character.

He's also trying to collect people to enter 20th round, but he also monopolizes all the resources. I haven't read till the end, but so far, the side characters (Ma Kyung-Rok, his right hand man, etc) are wasted potentials. MC's goal is to create a world where his brother will be safe and yet, we barely see their interaction. At some point, I asked myself "Why are we rooting for the MC again?". MC has a large ego which is understandable, but it's very hypocritical considering he also acts like he has the superior moral high ground than those people he killed.

Overall, don't waste your time if you are looking for a novel that has great world-building and plot. The novel is at best, a mediocre attempt at this genre and at worst, trying to look smart but ends up looking one dimensional. It's a good light read to pass the time and forget about after if you can overcome the cons above. I recommend just reading the manhwa bcs the art makes it bearable. I hope they change some of the plot in the manhwa. <<less

One of the better KR novels, much better than something like solo leveling.

There is minimal romance but there is enough with a bit of closure at the end.

The plot is well written with a definite beginning, middle and most importantly end - most of these novels have no overarching plot theme and just cobble together an ending but this one, the author knew what he wanted.

The biggest let down is the 20 rounds can seem a bit repetitive that you struggle to get through the middle part. Also the earth... more>> sections can drag on that you just hope he gets back to the game sections.

There is a decent mtl available and the translations of what is available is good. The novel should be closer to 4.0 than 3.6 on novel update, it’s so much better than most novels at that rating. I highly suggest you read the 30 or so manhwa and if you like them, you’ll probably like the novel. <<less

I meant 0 ⭐ I can't edit the star lol

5 ⭐ ??? Who TF giving this novel 5 star

Someone said it's similar to ORV and I wanted to give it a try but HECK NO, who TF compare ORV with this tr*sh. Be serious 😂

Typical storyline and as always Super duper OP MC who knows everything does everything and side male character is nothing but a bunch of loser and side female character is nothing but bunch of simp, I wanted to give 2 ⭐ because of his love for... more>> his lil bro and family and the art style, I stopped in a certain point while reading the novel year's ago and now TF I'm hearing is HE FREAKING GOT MARRIED WITH that creepy ass stalker girl?? Also HE FREAKING never even loved her but used her just like he did with others, FVCKING tr*sh and that's got me even more.

No storyline, no plot nothing but an OP MC, bye... And people come to say it's similar to ORV?? FVCK you get lost

Kdj is not a tr*sh written character. Mind you??

As someone who doesn't like romance and harem, this tr*shy romance stuff got me even more, fvck you whoever recommended me this.

As someone who enjoyed reading LOTM, ORV, RI, TEO, TCF etc. This noevl looks nothing but tr*sh and as a platonic relationship enjoyer who doesn't like romance and harem this novel ruined every expectation you have Bruh 💀 <<less

The novel itself is pretty solid, it has a pretty decent start and the premise is well implemented I'd say.

Definitely gets better the longer you go on, however there are significant downsides as well, such as the translation quality or rather the proofreading of said translation.

There are lots of cases where the MC's name "Black Scythe" is called "Black sickle" or some other variant for no apparent other reason than simply MTL / low or now effort in proofreading. To add more significant cases there's lots of times where the... more>> gendering (his, her, he, she, etc) is simply wrong as in female characters get referred to as "he did this" or "his weapon... ", the same happens for male characters as well and can be very annoying though it's usually not to an extent where it confuses people. This happens basically throughout the entire novel so I'll name it as the biggest drawback in reading this.

NOTE: it's never to an extent where you can't follow the story, just more of a constant annoyance.

Otherwise MC can be plain or rather just emotionless as he's often purely focused on the outcomes and doesn't really care what his choices do to other people emotionally nor does he seem to actually care about anyone who either isn't his brother or a person that is still useful (for the purpose of surviving and beating the 20 rounds and so on).

Towards the end the story kind of exponentially changes scope but it's done relatively well and is really at the far end of the story so it doesn't last that long if it's not something you enjoy.

Hopefully this wasn't too much rambling but yeah that's about it. <<less

PG13 Edgelord cranked up to 11. I am not joking. Your enjoyment of this series is very dependent on how much you can enjoy/tolerate edgelord content.

I feel like a lot of the higher rating reviews are completely skipping over some major flaws this series has.

SA against women comes up every 20-30 chapters. Yes, I counted.

Spoiler

At one point protag ens*aved a woman for non-s*xual reasons, but still.

[collapse]

The protagonist Ryu Min, will mu*der anyone he deems deserving of it (will even extort and torture beforehand) but then judges characters such as the Dark Knight for doing the same exact things.

The romance is weird.
Spoiler

Protagonist tricks himself into having feelings for a girl for plot reasons and that's how the romance progresses.

[collapse]

Female characters are pretty Cookie cutter stereotypes. Buffer is Girl Next Door, Summoner is the Hot Popular Girl, Priestess is Damsel in Distress, another is the Seductress, etc. And of course they all for for protag one way or another.

Characters make s*upid choices and/or plot convenience happens to help make protagonist look awesome and OP. And sure, protag has lived this life 100 times before but that only explains so much.

That said, after a while I started to enjoy how hypocritical the protagonist was. It just became comical. The Dark Knight has so much at stake for him I grew invested in what would happen to him. While the romance is weird I am enjoying it's development. I like the premise of survival games and how the rounds get changed up is interesting. <<less

Started reading bc I loved the manhwa and picked up where the manhwa left off (ch55 (manhwa) ch 60~ (novel)

Started off great but gets slowly worse. Some things I've noticed (that may or may not be in other reviews already) :

1-

His brother is his “achilles heel “ and the only person he cares about, yet we see very little bonding time. The time spent in the real world isn’t described much, usually 1-2 chapters and then back to the rounds. It’s disappointing to see how little he actually ‘spends’... more>> with his brother.

Along that train of thought, while I get he’s busy, it goes over maybe a day or two of describing everything before summarizing, and sure that would be fine normally, it skips over a lot of mundane things that gives the feel like a moment to breathe from the action. (This also kind of applies to the manhwa aswell)

2-

Another thing, although it briefs on his past regressions, it describes him as being a total of 100 years old, which means on average he lived at least a year each regression, which can’t be true.

at multiple times it says that it took # many times to find this hidden thing or he died # times to finally pass the certain trial. The former hints that he got to at least that round that number of times, and narrows down how many times he got there or past it. The latter also narrows it down further. While it doesn’t help with figuring out how many times he got there or past it, it does help with the timeline of deaths/which round he died # of times.

3-

It is slowly feeling like a harem. All the women in his main members like him: the min girl, seo arin, and christine.

4-

His sense of justice is slightly odd, even though he is doing his best to be just.

Spoiler

He kills people he can use (like the ma guy) and instead of putting him under control with yamei or with the duel feature.

He killed one of the player cops instantly for betraying him, even though the player cop was under threat. After killing him he says that being a traitor is irredeemable, but when he extracts info the same way the player cop was subjected to, he doesn’t gaf.

many more examples that I don’t remember.

I don't feel like writing the good, but here we go...

The GOOD:

  • The author hinted in the first chapter that the story could end after completing the 20th round. This will make you easily aware of how much the story has and will progress.
  • Like a typical regression trope, MC learned from his experience. He could farm efficiently and brute force everything later, so it should probably be good for people who like OP MC.
The BAD:

  • This has been mentioned several times by others, but I still need to point it out regardless: The writing is poor. No hardship. No flashback. No strategizing. Brute force. Time skip overuse. Noob remarks everywhere (ex: 'We raise our rank, is that good?'). The author seems to obsess over trying to make their MC special. I feel like getting PTSD every time I see the lines:
    Spoiler

"Ordinary folks may do this, regular people may choose that... but not ME!"

    or...

"... someone like me..., " "... just like me, " "But for me..., " "You ask why? Because I..."

    [collapse]

  • Despite having a month's gap between rounds, there's almost no story progression and character growth in between. After returning to reality, MC did something that can be done in a day, or at most, one week. Then the time skip happens, and the next round begins. This happens in EVERY. SINGLE. ROUND.
  • I'll say this again: no character growth. Only the MC level is growing, not his character. MC seemed to be the only one progressing despite his initial plans to make a party. He only shared information and always took everything else for himself. The most he contributed to a party was when he carried. And how did he never even consider making a party through 99 regression? This seems like a s*upid plot hole that shouldn't exist in a game-like situation.
  • Since MC has regressed 99 times before, one might think he has 99 life experiences, but no. There were a few instances where MC seemed to be doing something for the first time despite repeatedly regressing. There were also mentions like: 'A survived until the Zth round, B died in the Yth round.' Did this always happen in each regression? This feels like MC only lived one life before. The only information about his previous regression is 'MC tried N times to get X items.'
Still going to continue to read this for the moment.

I finished the novel, therefore, I need to share my point of view on it.

First of all, it is a very easy novel to read, easily if you have a lot of free time, in 4 or 5 days you will have finished it. It has a captivating story and very human characters with whom you can empathize, which makes reading enjoyable.

However, I felt several shortcomings towards the end, the fact that many secondary characters were left aside or simply stopped appearing did not seem like the best decision to... more>> me. Furthermore, from round 18 onwards, the author sped up the story a lot. He clearly said at the end of the story that he didn't feel motivated, but hey, nothing can be done.

Another negative element takes place in the last 10-15 chapters, where yes, they reveal the truth, but the MC becomes so powerful that it seems absurd. But this is solved a bit in the epilogue.

The side stories were good, except, in my opinion, Christina's. However, in the epilogue, three of them go into the tr*sh. Speaking of the epilogue, very good, at the beginning it is extremely boring, but if you don't give up you will enjoy a more than deserved ending, because the author shows us the life that the protagonist had been wanting for years.

In conclusion, a very good story that captivates the reader from the beginning, with very good characters that evolve after going through extremely tense and difficult moments and a world in constant evolution. Even with its problems and certain parts of the story where you will feel a bittersweet feeling, totally recommended.

Decent read. Writing is average, but precisely because of that, it is easy to read. I binged the novel within a week, and I didn't regret it.

MC is not the most talented, the smartest nor the strongest, but he is the most tenacious and relatable among those I've read. He is the epitome of ordinary (esp compared to other MCs in novels who claim they are ordinary but are suddenly schemers).

There were things to nitpick on the plot here and there (like author's lack of research on some countries and... more>> religion), but if you can suspend disbelief or not care about small details, then it's fine. For the holes, author tried to remedy them the best he could in the side stories. The worldbuilding and the fight scenes are solid enough to be enjoyed. MC is OP but imperfect (and he makes lots of decisions which is very humane of him, albeit sometimes questionable), but he tried his best to follow his own morals. Just like a normal human being.

Overall, the ending and side stories are satisfying. <<less

This is my jam. A regressor who uses future knowledge to prepare for the future. Considering the first chapter showing 20th floor explains why he can get so surprised in his last life - he was a lone wolf who only cared for himself but now has to make sure other, loyal people survive.

It seems like I’m around 1/6 of my way into the whole novel, yet every chapter feels meaningful to the plot despite the length. So far, there appears to be no signs of romance, though the MC has gathered quite a few admirers with both personas. He advances quite steadily and hasn’t encountered many major struggles. I enjoy the intrigue of power from the MC’s efforts and the little drama that happens. This is certainly a great casual read that’s interesting and free of drama. The translator has done a... more>> great job at translating, although a few terms seem a little inconsistent in more recent chapters.

A great thing about the MC is how he isn’t a totally emotionless killing machine, but actually seems to have some sort of emotion. He also displays incredible decisiveness, most likely from his previous 99 regressions. This decisiveness often makes him seem cruel, which may be true, but within context, seems to be a necessary evil or part of a well-thought plan.

To everyone who enjoy a powerful protagonist with minimal drama and few struggles, this will be a great novel for you (: <<less

So far the story is good. Even though there isn't much new to show in this novel, at least it's suitable for fun. As for MC, I'm glad he's not a cold person, most stories with MC often regressing are usually cold, but I'm happy that in this novel MC still has emotions.

The manhwa brought me here and honestly I didn't have the greatest expectations when I started the novel since it seemed to be a typical power fantasy story but wow it's so boring to read I don't find any fun in it. It reads like an edgy self insert wish fulfilment that somehow escaped the author's teenage diary.

I think the manhwa can get away with it a little more because at least the art is great so it's fun to look at without thinking too much about the actual story.... more>> Plus there seems to be some focus on MC's relationship with his younger brother which is super sweet and pretty much neglected in the novel, just like any possibility of interesting character development or relationships.

This is definitely one of those stories I don't think is worth reading. I'll just keep up with the manhwa with fingers crossed for an improvement on the story as it progresses. <<less

i started reading this because I finished s1 of the manhwa and had high hopes for its progression, but after almost 300 chapters I dont really know what to say. there’s a lot this story appealed to me, but its execution left me disappointed. it’s not a particularly deep story so I think it’ll still be fun for some people.

the writing for character dynamics is a total loss for me. I guess to be more exact, I started hating when MC was in the real world. the entire premise of... more>> this story is that he needed teammates to beat the final floor after 99 tries, but the narrative pushes the fact that because he’s done this a million times he’s above everyone. this is well executed in the first 100 chapters, but after introducing Yamti and MC’s growing double life i’m really sick of this. it goes back and forth between him being op and unfazed and him getting emotional about people so that we see his empathetic parts, but honestly he’s basically taking advantage of everyone by omitting information and using misunderstandings. he makes it so that everyone basically looks up to him, and does the bare minimum so they survive. the relationships with other side characters is basically all superficial? I don’t understand what’s even the point of “i need teammates to reach the end” if you’re just gonna manipulate them like this. his brother is the biggest example there — I really do like him, but if he was never there the story would be the exact same, so what point does he serve exactly other than to show MC still has humanity...

it also felt like the regression aspect was underutilized and just added in for the premise—this is his 100th life, but it’s rarely discussed what he went through other than “i just did these scenarios a lot”. I was intrigued because I like the futility of time loops and attempts, but it felt more like his 30th time. I suppose the numbers would’ve added up in the early stages where he didn’t know what he was doing. basically there isn’t a lot of introspection from the MC.

the women in this too are just... people complain about them for being annoying, but honestly it’s hard to even look deeper into them because they just serve to boost the MC. they’re just there.

Spoiler

also, I read this because nothing about it implied romance — youre telling me he falls in love with the girl he said he was just using for buffs?? this guy who did nothing about her feelings from the very start — one-sided crushes are entertaining to me, but seriously what is this!!! dont mess with me right now!!!

[collapse]

i’m aware that eventually the MC has to deal with him basically lying about his identity the entire time, but reaching the midway point and seeing how little was resolved I felt so hopeless about how it was going to end... truly, I had a lot of fun reading how MC would deal with each scenario with the information he has from his previous regressions. him as black scythe were my favorite parts of the novel. the manhwa did a really great job adapting this, and I might come back to complete this just to see the scenarios and worldbuilding. <<less

This novel is not that bad but I would say it is mediocre at best. I enjoyed the somewhat unique take on the regression trope and some of the fight scenes but honestly other than that it's pretty bland, or at least it didn't stand out to me. I enjoy OP main characters to a certain extent but it gets old quickly when every character that interacts with the MC sucks up to him. Every problem he faces gets solved so smoothly and easily, it gets repetitive. I love the... more>> premise of this novel but it really hit a lot of my pet peeves.

One of the biggest complaints I have about this novel are the female characters. There are, so far, two named female characters which is OK, since there aren't that many side characters but, would it kill you to give them a shred of a personality. I don't think calling them 2 dimensional or bland cuts it, the only character trait both of them have is the MC (both versions of him). I like their abilities, this is not a complaint about them not being powerful enough, it is the fact they are both unbearable (especially the actress).

I think other than that there are 3 female background characters who each appeared in like one scene in total and coincidentally all of it was just them being saved by the MC. I am not sure if this is going in a romance or harem route but if it is, I really don't see how any of them are compatible with the MC. Every scene they appear in makes me want to gouge my eyes out, l literally can't count how many times they made me facepalm (especially the actress).

There is also the brother, who is basically forgotten which is sad, since I enjoyed their dynamic in the manhwa. The only moment we see the brother is when he excited or worried about something the MC did and the MC being dismissive of him.

This might be someones cup of tea but it isn't mine. <<less

I like it but there's a few problems I had with this story.

I don't really care for side character's backstories before they meet MC, it feels long and tedious to read so I skimmed through it.

The slice of life parts where MC spent time with his brother was sweet, but boring af. There's nothing interesting about it (in my personal opinion) .

Then there's this girl who appears... the girl. Juri is a stalker- she's been stalking MC when he gets bullied... stalking MC home... found out he has a brother... more>> (nothing bad here but when said later, it makes me feel weird), she has a crush on MC which developed after stalking him around here and there and developed deep affections for him.... okay. She got upset/disappointed when MC didn't remember her name but like... they never spoke to each other in class... okay. Its a relief she doesn't act weird in front of him though which I like so I can tolerate her but I really don't know if I like her as a potential FL.

I also got issues with the writing, it's kind of weird. The internal mono-dialogue is really repetitive to the narration which outs me off at times and I mistake them as speaking out loud when it's actually in their head but it's manageable.

MC is a little on the plain side for me.

There are good points though I love, love, LOVE how the MC shows off he's strong from the start, specifically to everyone and those dumbass nobodies who would usually look down on MCs in other novels with this similar type of setting. I fell in love with this part. <<less
