As an actress with solid skills but stuck in the limelight as a third or fourth-tier celebrity, what was Song Ci’s wish? She said, “To become a rich, carefree, and beautiful girl who just waits for life to pass by.”

Heaven, in its mercy, decided to grant her wish. On her way to an audition, Song Ci took a tumble, and when she woke up, she found that her wish had come true. She had indeed become rich, carefree, and idle—

Old Matriarch!

Song Ci was stunned. She couldn’t accept such an opening to this script!

But, since she had already transmigrated, she might as well play the part. As the saying goes: life is like a play, and it all depends on your acting!

I liked this novel a lot, with some caveats! The main story is very fun and compelling, but unfortunately the epilogues fall short. It reminds me somewhat of Protect Our Patriarch.

The best part about this story is that it's kind of like non-romantically being part of a big family. The author does a great job with all the characters, who you really get to know and root for and become friends with. You feel sorry for some of them, you want to beat some of them up, you nibble popcorn... more>> while watching others have drama. All the characters are very 3-dimensional - the book is mainly about raising children well so we get lots of insight into the dads, the moms, the kids, and their issues. Song Ci, the main character, makes for a level-headed and sometimes hilarious old matriarch and at no point in the story did I want to drop it, which is saying something for a story as long as this one is!

However, it isn't perfect.

Spoiler

The ending epilogues in the modern world really fall short of the main story. It's kind of disjointed and flat, with honestly with not a lot of purpose other than to lavish Song Ci with OP-ness and do a bunch of faceslapping. Given the depth of the plot in the main story, I was hoping for at least some semblance of an arc in the modern world too, since there were so many epilogues. Also, the romantic subplot at the end was really shoehorned in.

[collapse]

Secondly, it's been a little while since I read this so I can't give any exact examples (and hopefully I'm not mixing it up with any of the novels I've read since!), but just a warning that some of the humour can be a bit abrasive to Western sensibilities in the way that Chinese novels sometimes are.

In summary, I recommend giving this a chance if family drama and political intrigue appeal to you! I really enjoyed it. <<less
