Amazing Apocalypse Survival Novel

Definitely worth reading despite its 600+ chapters. No filler arcs here. The translation is great, too.

The author took the cliche premise of a reborn heroine with a golden finger and turned it into an action-filled, captivating survival story set amid unpredictable natural disasters. The protagonists are likable, and you can understand their mindsets and decisions. The plot is carefully built and enriched with a diverse cast of key leaders, casual acquaintances, and life-long friends who actually matter to the story and aren't forgotten after their part is... more>> done.

Also, the dog appears relatively late, in case you're wondering. Actually, the ML is introduced much earlier (hint: just as the disaster starts), but the romance isn't rushed. The FL, an orphan, is very distrustful and closed off, having been betrayed by her crush in her previous life. The protagonists get character development as the plot progresses, which is a plus too.

Summary of the Plot (But You Really Should Read the Story to Find Out) :

Spoiler

In this gripping post-apocalyptic novel, the FL gets a second chance at life just two days before the world starts collapsing. In her past life, she struggled for years amidst catastrophic natural disasters, only to realize that her crush had been using her all along. Determined not to be naive again, she vows to prepare better and live smarter this time around.

With the realization that her jade pendant is actually a magical space (a secret she discovered too late in her previous life), she begins hoarding supplies and strategizing for survival. Along the way, she teams up with a powerful and mysterious neighbor and his little sister, inviting her childhood friends to join them in neighboring units. Together, they form a resilient group, scavenging for resources and building defenses against desperate survivors, all while keeping her special powers a secret.

A loyal dog she remembers from her past life, who once died protecting her, becomes a key part of their group. The mysterious neighbor, revealed to be an ex-special forces officer, offers to train the dog as a police dog in exchange for her help in educating his sister. As they face numerous deadly challenges, including ruthless gangs, they grow closer and eventually fall in love, revealing their rebirth stories to each other.

Their journey is fraught with danger, but they manage to warn the police about future disasters and continue their quest for survival. After several brushes with death, they find themselves at a military base, seeking refuge from massive tsunamis and uncovering the truth about FL's origins.

As they drift and fight for survival, they finally discover a new home base led by FL's biological father, who had been searching for her, suspecting her special powers. Here, they begin to build a new life, planning missions to collect resources and strengthen their community. Despite numerous challenges, including reencounters, conflicts, and tragedies, they work towards creating a safe haven where FL can live securely, even if her powers are exposed.

[collapse]

Upsides:

  • Engaging Plot: The MC's preparations and the catastrophic events create a suspenseful and captivating story.
  • Realistic Challenges: The protagonists work half-blind to survive, facing real trouble and unexpected dangers.
  • Character Development: Most characters (including FL) evolve throughout the story, growing naturally into a strong, protective family.
  • Mental Health Awareness: The novel realistically portrays the emotional toll of surviving in apocalyptic conditions.
  • Satisfying Ending: The story concludes well, providing closure without loose ends.
  • No Zombie Virus: Focuses on natural disasters and human challenges.
Downsides:

  • Nationalism: Some Chinese superiority, racism, and political bias, though not extreme.
  • Perfect ML: The male lead is almost flawless from the start, leading to minimal character development for him.
  • Aggressive FL: The female lead is initially too aggressive and reckless, though she does recognize and adjust this behavior.
  • Moral Ambiguity: The protagonists are not traditionally "good" and focus on survival over heroics, which might not appeal to everyone.
Filled with action, emotional reunions, and the bond between humans and animals, this novel is a thrilling tale of resilience, love, and the quest for a safe haven in a shattered world. <<less

This novel has an excellent writing and very good translation quality. It takes a very common premise and executed it very nicely so far. It also takes risks by shedding light on a lot of things other novels of this category ignores.

The world building and characters are nicely developed. MC is pretty likeable, there is no sudden romance although the identity of ML is pretty obvious.

One thing to note is that so far, the "Apocalypse" is in fact an apocalypse in a biblical sense rather than a meteor came and... more>> dropped zombies type. What it means is that the driving force of this novel is a series of natural disasters that leads to collapse of society and humanity and how our MC, the people around her and also the society and government copes with it.

The practical aspects of every decision and actions taken by the characters are very nicely demonstrated.

I was honestly apprehensive to give this novel a try after reading the title and thought it would be typical OP MC slicing zombies. I am glad it has neither and instead is so much better. Will recommend 9.3/10 <<less

Best apocalypse novel I've ever read till now. Have not found other good apocalypse story with the reasonable ending with all the re-establishment of the country and human civilization. If anyone have any recommendation like this one, please do reply.

The BEST apocalypse novel I've read.

The FL is an abandoned child who grew up in orphanage. Her life was not easy. Growing up she was often bullied and had to learn martial arts to defend herself. While she's physically and mentally strong, she died at the third year of apocalypse in her first life.

She was reborn three days before the start of the apocalypse with only 200k in her saving. From her first life, she realized that she has a jade that was actually a key to a magical space.

What... more>> I love the most from this story is that although she has a cheat in surviving the apocalypse, it was still very very hard for her. Due to her life experience, she's very suspicious and wary of other people, so she came out as an indifferent and cold person when she was actually only trying to protect herself.

This is a great adventurous non Mary Jane story where many challenges and difficulties, realistic characters with good character development, and it can keeps you thinking about the storyline even after it ends.

It's that good. <<less

One of, if not the best, apocalypse novels I have read! It is much more realistic than other novels (internal struggles of MC, interpersonal relationships, death, etc.) and the character depth is incredible. When you think the novel is heading in one direction, you are surprised by how unexpected natural disasters can be. The extras are interesting too (cried for Coke). Highly recommend!

The FL is an orphan that starts off closed-off, aggressive, and quite suspicious and defensive.

Which is great. She's reborn and died tragically in her last life, and has no reason to be overly kind or gracious. She doesn't pretend otherwise, either—the apocalypse has arrived, and she just wants to survive. Nature and other humans are all terrifying and terrible. Her aggression and unwillingness to take a loss are character flaws, yes, but they're hardly flaws for the novel. Characters shouldn't be perfect. As she ages and opens up with the... more>> help of her little family (ML, sister, & dog), she gradually mellows out and learns to deal with more people she doesn't like ane becomes a degree more tolerant. Overall, she's not static, and her growth is done well.

While the ML is generally surface-level perfect (good looking, multi-talented ex-military everyman) at the beginning, I think he also changes over time. At the beginning, he's fairly cold, mysterious, and closed-off. His sole purpose is keeping him and his sister alive, and although he says that

Spoiler

although he wouldn't redo it, he doesn't regret his past life, when he died after being back stabbed by people he saved,

[collapse]

I do think he has more scruples in helping people at the start. But gradually, he warms up alongside the FL and he does develop as a character. Admittedly, not as much as the FL, because he starts off with fewer perceivable flaws.

I also really liked some of the side characters, like Young Master Rong and Qin Chuan.

It's enjoyable overall. My main bone to pick is that I think too many important side characters manage to survive. Their reasons for survival are generally pretty decent, and the overall situation is mostly appropriately tragic, but the author could've killed off more of them. <<less

For better or for worse, the first part is almost identical to another disaster novel, only with the main characters arranged slightly differently. (Beyond the usual tropes of apocalypse web novels.) But later it develops a bit differently from the norms and has some fun disaster content I don't recall reading in a cnovel so far.

Unfortunately, shortly after that, it distinguishes itself with a lot of xenophobia and nationalism. Like, a particularly creepy variety.

Aside from that, it's highly enjoyable.

The start might come a bit off since the MC is distant and ruthless with others, which is understandable given her difficult experiences in her past life. But I like that although she's cautious of the people around her, she still finds ways to help her friends in her own way. Others might find it irritating that she keeps holding back from helping them fully, but it's understandable. People change, and even if they are her close friends, there's a chance they might betray her under extreme circumstances. As she... more>> said in one of the chapters, the human heart is unpredictable. <<less

It's a really good apocalyspe novel.

The MC will come as cold and uncaring to begin with, but her actions is reasonable once the reader learns her background and what she's been through and there's a few people she atleast trust a tiny bit.

The characters in the novel also evolve and change during the story.

I don't think I should write much about it, though I can say it's a "survive nature" rather than a "zombies and powers" type of novel.

It's a "must read".

I love it! A rather new take on the apocalypse genre, instead of Zombies we got Natural Disasters! Which is a refreshing idea that I love, the zombie one was kinda getting tedious after reading tens of the same genre. This is a welcome take that I hope many translators would translate more. It's also easy to MTL if you want to read ahead since the bulk of the chapters translated is behind a paywall, but if you have the means you can access them in the site.

I really like the premise of this novel. It focuses on natural disasters rather than zombies or magic powers makes for a refreshing take on the apocalypse genre. Jiang Ning, the protagonist, is an independent and jaded character, which fits the story well. It's also interesting how people around her react when she acts violently, especially early on. Since some level of civilization is still intact, characters are shocked by her ruthlessness, even though she's only defending herself. I appreciate having a proactive main character who takes control rather than... more>> passively reacting from the sidelines.

That said, there are a few things I feel meh about. The biggest one for me is the childrearing aspect, lol. This is just personal preference, but I don't find Dou Dou very compelling. Yes, she's cute, but that's about it. She doesn't feel like a fully fleshed-out character to me. Her personality mostly revolves around being well-behaved due to past ab*se, which makes her come across as more of a plot device than a believable child. It seems like her main role is to set up the male lead's entrance by constantly praising Jiang Ning ("I want to be with Sister!" "Sister cooks the best!"), giving the novel a little family dynamic, while also being off (5 yo old Dou Dou is trained by ML and has abs, apparently). The romance so far also feels a bit cliché. Jiang Ning initially rejects him but then immediately starts noticing him afterward. I was a little hopeful when she shot him down, especially when in his perspective "that was how his first crush ended" note happened. Personally, I prefer my apocalypse stories with minimal romance, or have it solidly in the romance camp without the wishy-washy "I don't trust romance any more" to "Oh, I actually like him". The ML himself is pretty cookie-cutter. Good at everything (except cooking) from combat to training her dog, etc; the stoic good-guy everyone fears, admires, and wants to be.

There are plenty of positive reviews for this novel, so I'm planning to keep reading, but for now, I feel kind of indifferent about it. <<less
