Upon entering the Eastern Palace, Fang Yun lived cautiously, burdened by the label of a substitute bride and daughter of a traitor. She knew well that, as a daughter of low birth, she had been cast aside as a pawn to appease the late Emperor’s decree. Her family had sacrificed her so that her noble-born sister could become the consort of the First Prince, securing the family’s allegiance to the new regime and gaining glory.

Her father’s gaze was icy. “It’s your fortune to enter the Eastern Palace. The family raised you for years; you should be grateful and repay this kindness.” Her sister mocked, “As an inferior daughter, you should feel lucky to take my place in the Eastern Palace.” Fang Yun lowered her eyes to hide the cold glint beneath. “Father, rest assured. I’ll repay this kindness a thousandfold.”

Did they really think they could use her as a stepping stone to wealth and status? Years later, Fang Yun reclined lazily in the arms of the newly crowned Crown Prince, watching those once arrogant figures grovel at her feet like dogs, begging for mercy. “To spare or not-my beloved, the choice is yours,” said the man in the dragon robe, his gaze warm and gentle.

With a slight raise of her eyes, Fang Yun waved a delicate hand. “Kill them. They’re too noisy.”

They had tried to cast her into the fire, but she had risen from the flames, determined to make these despicable, ruthless wolves regret ever crossing her path, tasting the bitter fruit of their actions to the fullest.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

I really like Harem stories and my fav will always be TJOAIC and I really wanted to love this book. I don't hate it, I just felt like it wasn't very consistent throughout like TJOAIC or even 100 ways to conquer the emperor.

I liked the format obviously because I have read a few of these kinds of books but usually for me I like it when characters are consistent throughout the novel. The crown prince initially all the way to the middle of the book... more>> really came off as a very smart strategic guy who reads people really well and is mostly okay with pampering a concubine as long as she stays within her bounds but by the time he becomes an emperor he starts feeling a bit dumb to me. It's like he loses that aspect of being like super smart and a good people reader... He starts consulting the FL more and more on matter of politics and it's like she's the one giving him all the good ideas but before he could come up with these ideas on his own so own it just feels like he's relying on her more and more and it's like he's becoming dumber. Also at some points with some concubines I feel like he was just prejudiced against them as a plot device and not in a realistic sense because they were bad or annoying... I guess that saying that when you like a person everything they do is great but when you dislike a person everything they do is annoying applies here but then some of these concubines honestly didn't deserve the way he was just immediately prejudiced against them just because he likes the FL... that felt a little unreaklistic to me coz some of them were really smart too but plot dictates that he should be faithful emotionally so he is.

The FL was also really great start but she honestly started annoying me by like chapter 450. It's the same issue where I just feel like she's not consistent in her morals and character throughout. If I was in this harem, I would honestly kinda hate her too which I guess is good but I just wish she was more consistent in her character. I did like the banter with the ML but that also wasn't enough to make me love this book to the end. Some of the concubine who are initially introduced as very savvy and smart just like the FL end up making really s*upid choices which I didn't understand... It's like the FL was the only one capable of manipulating situations successfully which made me annoyed. I wish some of them were allowed to be smart until the end kind of like Ning fei from 100 techniques who schemed successfully even though eventually she was caught. All the concubines till the end just came off a canon fodder and I was never worried about any schemes being successful because I know the FL would definitely catch them which just made me bored.

Regardless, it's still a pretty decent harem novel. The ML does end up being almost exclusive with the FL (which also kind of annoyed me lol coz I like pragmatic characters in my stories) and there are some pretty good political manipulation story lines. The translation is also super great so you can read it but don't expect like a deep intense story. <<less

THE MOST UNDESERVING RATING EVER. Like whatttt, are people blind????? The rating was 2.7 when I first read this when it definitely deserves 5/5 full score. I will give a quite detailed review with (hopefully) little to no spoiler here because I want to explain the gist of it.

It's long, yes, 600 chapters of a very well-crafted story. The pace, the slice-of-life, the world-building, everything is worth it. I spent several days marathoning this masterpiece with no regret.

It never over-explain the result of the schemes, the politics, or the war.... more>> I love that the author solely focused on the harem and not trying to be expert on other situations, like the usual know-it-all world. Everything is concisely written. Well-600-chapters-packed. It never get boring.

The translation? Superb. Very nice, easy to read, one of the best I've read. The structure seems to be flowing naturally like an English story, rather than Mandarin-translated-English, which I often find in other translations. The chinese structure wasn't brought too much, although there are mishaps here and there, but as a fellow translator, I still respected the delicate work. It can be very overwhelming to translate, especially doing it free for a hobby.

Among all the historical-josei pieces I've read, the female lead was powerful because she's either reborn or transmigrated, this one isn't. Albeit she can get a little too perfect sometimes, I still enjoy how she won the schemes satisfyingly.

The story is a classic zero-to-hero. Basically we're watching the usual harem struggle, but compared to other similar stories, I've seen more dramatic plot. For example, how the bad person turned out to be good and vice versa, basically a lot of plot twists. This one though? It just... flows like a no brainer. I can classify this as the lighter harem struggle story. The course of action of the harem struggles are in line with each concubine's behavior, so there wasn't much of a surprise.

Regarding feelings, it's also the typical clear headed female lead with no trust or expectations of love; yet her heart was still made of flesh.

The Crown Prince wasn't bad. I think he maybe the most realistic and level-headed one. Some readers might disagree with me here, as it would be revealed later that one of his decision cause a major tragedy that could be 80% prevented if only he didn't do that, and people will view him badly just because of this. For me, he's not perfect and it's fine. He's been trying hard to balance the inner court with careful considerations and ultimately, if the villain didn't act, the tragedy won't happen. My suggestion is, rather than trying to blame the cause, you also have to focus on the action. Resentment still didn't allow a person to become immoral. People just don't want to reflect on their own action and it shows. It's easier to blame others.

One of my most favorite character is the Crown Princess. From the seemingly perfect person, as the story goes, her development become very human. That she too, has a lot of contradictions, inner struggles and cannot be the best person of herself towards the end. She and the Crown Prince are the perfect royal couple and honestly, I really respect that in the end, the Crown Prince admit his oversight and actually said, "I have wronged you, "

As much as I love Fang Yun, the Crown Princess is still the official wife and my heart sympathize with her a lot.

The Crown Prince and Princess are both very respectable characters.

From the story synopsis, it seemed like the Crown Prince will indulge Fang Yun, our female lead, to "punish" others like an overbearing favored concubine, but the story is far from that. I wouldn't say much, but the story isn't that "magical".

What makes the story different is how the Crown Prince value his children very much, that the siblings get along well (it's not typical to see familial bond in the royal family). The extra stories are about each one of them, on how would they lead their life. Because they were raised by different mothers however, whether all of them have a 'decent life' is debatable.

One of my slight "itchiness" on the story is:

Spoiler

When Fang Yun first entered the Palace, she was very careful on the other concubine's schemes, so she often sends her maid to "investigate". The thing is, it's just beyond my logic seeing the result of investigation come very easily, only after a few days, when Fang Yun herself isn't a favored child in her family and bringing almost no dowry as a Liangdi. Meaning that, to get information, she has to at least use some money to bribe some information away or has a very capable maid with some espionage expert-level skill, which is not in line with her situation.

[collapse]

Thank you for translating this gem, I really enjoy every seconds of it (with large panda eyes). <<less

This was actually pretty good, not sure why it has such a low rating. The plot may be the typical rag to riches harem intrigue but it was very engaging. The characters were wonderful and three dimensional, the world building was done well enough for you to cheer/rage at. The Emperor and Empress were great characters. They each had their own flaws but they genuinely tried their best. We don't get to see many of the FLs flaws, probably cause we're made to believe her personality is an act and... more>> she is always cautious. I liked her, she was okay. I feel like the Empress' dilemmas and decisions made me respect her more.

It's quite long but I don't think I ever felt bored. Reading the extras made my nose sour. Even though it's nothing out of the box, it's definitely worth reading. <<less

Its been awhile I was searching something to read and Oh my God, I just finished this novel and I LOVED it!!

I would rate it by 4.9 solid (0.1 due to FL's son story haha..

First of all, a huge thank you to the author and the translator! I must say, the translator did a fantastic job. I truly appreciate your hard work — thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this gem. May your life be filled with success and blessings.

... more>> Now, about the story...

The female lead was absolutely perfect and matched my taste so well. She was strong, smart, and well-crafted — not overly malicious, but never someone who lets others walk over her. She's the kind who believes in “an eye for an eye, ” and I really admire that about her.

The male lead was your typical emperor — cunning and strategic. But the way the author portrayed him felt realistic, not overly dreamy or romanticized. And despite everything, you just can’t bring yourself to hate him, especially when you see how much he cares for Fang Yun (FL).

The plot itself was solid and well-developed. What stood out to me the most was the female lead’s journey — her strength, her survival in the harem, and how emotionally touching it all was. It reminded me of Chinese dramas like Love Like the Galaxy (which is the dynamics between the emperor, empress, and consorts) and Story of Yanxi Palace. There are moments of sweetness, but if you're expecting a sugary romance, you might be disappointed — this story mainly focuses on the FL’s survival and emotional resilience.

The only thing that left me a bit conflicted was the story of the FL’s son. It really made me sad. I had hoped he would be different from his father — someone who, after witnessing everything his mother endured, would choose to truly love and stay loyal to one woman. But sadly, he didn’t turn out that way. What a shame — it could have gone differently.

Still, overall, I’m very content with the novel. It truly left an impression on me. I’ll definitely reread it again in the future — though I might skip the part about her son story next time. <<less

Very enjoyable harem intrigues and shenanigans. ML is a Crown Prince who is placed under the care his uncle. The uncle is supposed to stand in as Emperor until the ML matured but obviously now keen to put his own son on the throne instead. The Empress Aunt was also manipulative and domineering. FL is a concubine daughter thrown in to replace her sister in the CP’s household as her family defected to the eldest prince of the Emperor.

Through staying as true to her heart as possible whilst refusing to... more>> be trampled on, FL slowly worked her way up. Though there are feelings between the leads, the FL remains in essence true to her self and loved herself more. This makes her progress meaningful and adaptable to the inevitable backstabbing plots in the harem.

The extras are great as they showcased the kids lives and the main leads’ progress into their old age.

Translation was very well done and of high quality. <<less
