As a self-professed no-lifer, Yuri idles his days away in front of a computer. This all changes the moment his life in Japan comes to an abrupt end and he finds himself reborn in the strange new world of the Shiyalta Kingdom.

His new life includes everything he once lacked: loving parents, a comfortable home, and a promising future breeding and raising birds on his dad’s ranch.

For centuries, the kingdom he now calls home has enjoyed peace and prosperity, shielded by friendly nations that, like Shiyalta itself, were established with the collapse of a once-great empire. War is a distant problem, relevant only to Shiyalta’s ruling families whose warriors periodically set out to join the fighting upon massive birds trained by Yuri’s dad and others.

But this peaceful existence can’t last forever. Something rotten lies at the heart of the kingdom, and it doesn’t take someone with Yuri’s exceptional intelligence to realize that those distant battles will only remain irrelevant for so long.

I regret every single time I've spent on this novel. I won't ever touch it again.

1. Character:

MC is your typical beta Japanese loser. Soft borderline doormat, has no desire or ambitions, 'morally right' to the point of cringe saint.

... more>> For a story that is supposed to be about conquest, politics, and war, I WOULD RATHER HAVE A MORALLY DOUBIOUS WAR MANIAC THAN THIS BETA MC. And true, his character will become a disaster later and the most disappointing development the author has ever taken.

He is too laid back, for every single problem, every single threat his response is always "Lol not my problem", "I have no business with that" even to the enemy that he knows someday will threaten him.

Spoiler

Because of his idiocy and Japanese beta personality, his parents and the queen were killed in a coup by the witches. The very people he swore to protect. They died pointlessly just because he kept ignoring the witches like an idiot.

If he ever grows some spines, MC can preempt the witches by massacring them first. He has the most powerful army in the kingdom and no one can stop him, yet he let the coup happen. The s*upid author also treats the coup as 'trivial' by making MC solve the problem in a single day. What a moron, can solve a coup in 1 day, but cannot prevent it from happening.

[collapse]

Spoiler

To make everything worse, the author decided to kill Carol, the female lead because she was a hindrance to the plot. Can you imagine, we spent more than 6 volumes rooting for Carol as FL just to be killed. Btw MC will make a harem after FL dies.

The author is too incompetent to write a power dynamic between queen and MC if the author let Carol live. For everything smooth sailing, the author makes MC as regent for his 5 day old daughter to justify his legitimacy as a despot because only a female can become monarch in the story.

[collapse]

2. The war and technology

It's a mess. The best comparison is like Sweden vs Russian Empire in terms of territory, population, and economy. Except the enemy has every advantage in technology. Enemy has musket and cannon, MC fights them with spear and bow. MC won. Tremendously. Against superiors' tech and number, with the cheat of another world that never mentioned before.

The author wants to make a story about MC who has lost his wife, parents, and country, depressed then rose to be a great king who conquers the world and establishes a great empire. Great idea, yet the author is too inept to realize that goal. The plot is a mess, the character is garbage. MC is not Alexander nor Caesar, nor any great figure, he is just a Japanese beta protagonist. <<less

I made an account just to write my frustrations about this series. I truly believed that we were about to witness peak isekai/light novels. I expected it to go as far and as hard as Mushoku Tensei.

But Volume 8 or what will become of it, basically renders the all the previous 7 volumes useless. You can read it regardless because this is what you will be missing out on:

- Great character depth and build up. You never feel like a character is misplaced, they feel real with their own motivations... more>> like they are living their own lives outside of the MC. I often find myself thinking what other characters must be feeling if they knew what was happening in the current chapters. They felt that real to me. The build up is crazy, often you'd see random things that the MC does that doesn't really matter in the moment but becomes life or death in 2 volumes time.

- Realistic military conflicts and world building. The motivations of the nations involved are grounded in reality, and you'd often find parallels in our own history. Nevertheless, its presented in a fresh way where you can kind of guess what to expect but it's still not boring. Even though the enemies are superior to them in terms of numbers and technology, the MC would have laid the groundwork 2 volumes ago for what he could use to either win or at least breakeven. There's not ever an asspull to get the MC out of trouble. This in itself is impressive for the next point.

- A "mini-vietnam arc" where the MC will be like a cornered dog at every step of the way but satisfactorily prevails. When I tell you that this part of the story is glorious, take my word for it. In peak isekai terms, it's in the same level as volume 15 of Mushoku Tensei. These volumes 4-5, will have you tense at your seat as you read every page wanting for more. For your health, if you stop reading at this point in the story, I'd find it hard to argue with you if you say this is one of your top LNs of all time.

Here's why I would implore you to not start reading this series at all if you could:

- The MC's whole character arc is about him being indecisive and not actually putting his abilities to use, he has this mindset of "i can escape anyways" so the threats that his nation faces don't matter to him. So in my mind, his character arc is all about being compelled by fate to move. And when this does happen, his motivating factor is the FL, who by themselves is a pivotal character that changes the whole dynamic of the whole environment. This is not to say that the MC is a simp, far from it really, but instead he had no reason to fight and then throughout the 6 volumes, he found it. You could honestly say that the first 6 volumes are a love story between the MC and the FL within the backdrop of political intrigue, economics, and war. Getting into spoiler territory, something happens to the FL that basically renders the MC's whole character arc ruined. He starts doing things that he showed no signs of doing before and the story becomes a generic, degenerate plot.

If you want the spoiler here it is:

Spoiler

Carol (the FL) dies in childbirth so the MC could be king regent and build a harem. The only explanation I could think of for this decision is that the author is completely unaware of the story he's written so far and he wanted to placate his JP readers who are way into that degenerate stuff, the MC and the FL are in 7/7 volume covers released at this point in time FFS. In terms of ship potential this was the only one possible, in terms of competition, there was none. Anything other pairing is nothing short of a disaster. Why bother setting up 7 volumes of a relationship if you're just gonna squander it for a harem? Why would he need to be king if he already had the full trust of the queen? Answer: he doesn't, in fact the separation of military might and the political power of the state is a tasteful separation. It would have been more interesting if that dynamic stayed as they went on to beat their enemies in to submission. This mistake is a fumble so big it's generational. It's akin to killing off Killua in HunterxHunter so that Gon could be buddies to 3 Krillins. I love Krillin don't get me wrong, but they're no Killua.

[collapse]

Overall, if you do still decide to read this, read it only until before the final chapter in volume 6. Otherwise, prepare to be utterly disappointed going forward. We could have had a War and Peace, instead we got a Diary of a Wimpy Kid. <<less

To briefly summarize what to expect from the series (with no spoilers), its a character-driven, low fantasy reincarnation story following the life of the MC as he navigates internal politics and international war in order to protect his self-interests. Among isekai stories, it is of the slow-paced (not to be confused with slow-life) and dramatic type, as the bulk of the writing focuses on describing character thought processes as opposed to moving events along.

I very much enjoy this story and would highly recommend it if you enjoy stories that focus... more>> on character relationships and world-building. The major characters in the cast are all like ogres and onions in that they have layers. Although some readers might glance at a scene and immediately associate the characters with common archetypes such as "socially awkward genius", "tomboy princess", or "romantically dense protagonist", throughout the story the author does justice to the major characters in giving them personal goals, circumstances, and history to make them believable (to an extent).

A common opinion I've seen online is that the MC is a 'typical indecisive beta male', but I highly disagree with this as there is an important difference between "being indecisive" and "deciding not to act". Personally, I'm not even sure how people reached that generalization since the entire plot revolves around the MC taking the necessary steps to achieve his goal. If the 'beta male' bit is based on the MC's reluctance to have s*x in a setting where birth control doesn't exist then I'm glad we live in a time where people's (hypothetical) partners have access to birth control.

I forgot the internet was poisoned. Why am I on novelupdates writing a review? I have to go now. <<less

I was hopeful when I first picked this up but I just really can't seem to find the protagonist likable. He combines the worst parts of a toxic capitalist and an indecisive doormat. He keeps making 'genius' plans/decisions that are incredibly s*upid if you actually think about them outside of how they're described in the novel. Most of this seems to be due to the author just not thinking through what they're writing and it's implications.

A few examples:

Spoiler

In response to a question of why he doesn't help the poor he kicks a man sleeping on the street in the stomach. It turns out this is okay because the man's actually an employee of his who must be worrying his wife by getting drunk and sleeping outdoors. He gives the man a pie to take home. This is somehow meant to show how great the MC is.

[collapse]

Spoiler

He is put in charge of a young female relative of his who needs a job. She's 13. He decides it looks like nepotism if she commutes from his family's mansion so he decides to have her live in the bad part of town near an employee of his he barely met a few months ago. An employee who was a known drunk when he first got hired. In a part of town so bad that he warned this employee to avoid keeping money on him in case he tempted robbers.

[collapse]

Spoiler

In a succession crisis he seriously wants to give complete control to an early villain - because he can't be bothered - but decides against it only when forced to by circumstance. Despite the fact this would be horrificly s*upid.

[collapse]

Overall it just seems like the author has a pretty terrible understanding of things like economics, workers rights, morality or even just basic common sense why you don't have random children live on their own in the bad part of town. They try to tell an interesting tale but they can't overcome these issues. <<less

This is an interesting story, it mostly stay grounded than going overboard with overmanaging like many Isekai story does,

I really do recommend this btw, and I do think you'll like it given the war theming. It's more mature than all the Isekai I've recently read and the MC is very rational.

All while doing the right things rather than having circumstances suit his needs.

... more>> The only things that it lacks when compared to, ie Mushoku Tensei is "setbacks" and "Turning points" at least for now as it's only 4 volumes Translated.

It's also not an adventuring series so the cast member is narrower and time flows faster than Vol 4 Mushoku Tensei was.

There's setups here and there but I'm still not sure how the Author will have the MC weave through the untimely doom approaching his country.

The characters are likeable, limited in number but are all rational and not a paper mache of tropes. It's been a while since I feel I'd be quite devastated if any one of them met misfortune., the main heroine especially.

And yes this story will do it if they have to, there'd been a few deaths and so narrow are the window for the MC's good ending that Im curious how it'd be handled. <<less
