Jiang Wu is a wandering soul who has roamed the earth for a thousand years. One day, he finds himself in a body, reincarnated as a historically infamous and deposed emperor who was beheaded after a coup.

Jiang Wu: Hmm…

Being an emperor, a position he finds nightmarish, Jiang Wu, with his depressed outlook on life, just wants to hand over the throne and quickly return to his ghostly state.

To speed up the rebellion of the Yin family, he summons the Yin family’s eldest son to the palace to serve him. Immediately, the court is filled with outrage, and the Yin family almost storms the palace to skin him alive.

That night, Jiang Wu lazily demands humiliating tasks from the fiercely glaring Yin Wuzhi: “Hold me, feed me, and lull me to sleep.”

Finished, he sends Yin Wuzhi off to review documents.

The next day, the humiliation continues: “Hold me, push me on a swing, lift me up high.”

Finished, he sends Yin Wuzhi off to review documents.

On the third day, the demands escalate: “Hold me, kiss me, and squat down to listen to what I have to say.”

Yin Wuzhi, staring at the lazy, slumped figure on the couch: …..

This is too much!!!

If this Laozi doesn’t kill you, I won’t be called Yin Wuzhi!!!

He furiously reviews documents.jpg

Then, a year passes, two years pass, and despite Jiang Wu’s daily humiliations and forcing Yin Wuzhi to review documents, the throne becomes more secure, the people grow richer, and the empire prospers year by year.

Gloomy Critic: …

According to my fate, I should have met my end by now, so why is everything still fine?

Trying it out myself.jpg

Yin Wuzhi… Yin Wuzhi is going mad.

(Bruh I wrote a lot just to misclick and lost all that I typed. -_- So I'll leave a shorter review for now and come back to add more details and possibly tighten down the review later.)

I was promised salted fish and I got exactly salted fish. The story is also surprisingly good and quite beautiful and profound, if I must say so myself.

It's not a story of fast pace drama and conspiracy theories. No you won't get that here. It's a story of development and rediscovering.

MC is... more>> a salted fish and a true one at that. He ain't have the energy for that type of drama filled stories. We're reading from a salted fish POV, so the story is exactly as expected — slow, slice of life, mundane, and sometimes even ridiculous.

You also cannot look at, expected to, and judges MC behaviors and one track mind through the eyes of a human mindset. If you do, then you'll find yourself in the same position as the low rating reviewers and won't the story not understands MC.

In addition, the title suggested depression, but I don't see it as depression as the state of MC mentality is far from depression as his actions isn't the result of losing faith in humanity or life, but moreso in that humanity and "life" have nothing to do with him and he just wants to get back to his previous state of being which he is satisfied with.

Imagine having all the freedom in the universe, boundless and unrestrained, to suddenly be forced to be earth, body, and human bounded. I would act and do the same as MC ngl.

Onto ML. He's the MVP, the perfect match, medicine, solutions, and lover to MC indifferent mentality and one track mind characters. He's the hardest worker in the whole story, he deserved a noble peace prize award. You'll probably see why if you read the story and understand their backstory.

Anyway, I enjoyed this story a lot. I chuckled a lot. I would even say I love it. So if you can open your mind enough and leave all your human judgement behind when reading, I highly recommend giving this novel a read, especially if you enjoy seeing the journey and development of a salted fish. <<less

I won’t note it because it was a complicated read. The MC is truly depressed (and suicidal) and is like that for the majority of the story. I am not suicidal, but I truly understand what it’s like to feel constantly tired and sleepy even if you sleep for hours. For him, a body is just a prison. It was hard to read at times, especially since his behavior was so frustrating, but I felt like I wasn't qualified to judge him.

I thought it’d be a comedy - it’s not.... more>> It’s just highlighting depression via absurdity. A lot of times, it felt like too much effort for just one guy and if went into another body, he'd die so much faster. But there's an explanation to everything toward the end. Tho it felt a bit rushed, so the coming together isn't that satisfying.

Btw, it is a happy ending (unexpectedly). There is also a plot twist I didn't see coming, and I absolutely love ML. I often felt like he deserved more but his perseverance did reward him - and there actually is a reason behind his unhealthy love. There is also a heavy background to MC's depression.

Spoiler

Basically, MC is actually inhabiting his own body (proper reincarnation, woo) and a lot of things he heard about Jiang Wu (actually him lol) was nonsense. In the original timeline, he was framed by his mom (the first wife of the emperor of the enemy country) who lied to him saying he was actually the son of the enemy emperor. She also heavily ab*sed him since he was a kid to make him the perfect prince. He tried to seek help from the empress dowager and the empress at the time (who was his mom’s rival) but they didn't believe him and the ab*se got stronger so he became silent and lifeless. He ended up later saving the life of another prince who was drowning, and when they saved him (bc he let himself drown after), they saw the scars so they made the empress take care him. Still, his mom (Yao Ji, real name He Qi) continued to push him to be perfect by using needles and lying (stuff like his dad didn't love him) and later on she used a gu so everything she feels (like wounds) would also reflect on his body. That's why when the emperor died, he told everyone not to kill her even if she did something 'bad'.

Coming back to ML, he was actually MC’s childhood sweetheart. Other kids called him a savage when he arrived at the capital so MC taught him how to speak the proper language and stuff. But then he later had to leave to join his dad who was fighting on the border. After MC was framed (and there were rumors that he killed his brothers and he was a spy) and the country was in chaos, MC made ML promise to kill MC’s mom (so he wouldn't be associated with him and be branded a traitor) before eloping together. However, because of the mother gu in Yao Ji, he also died.

Later, ML became obsessed with taoism and buddhism because he wanted to find MC’s soul, but every true practician told him they couldn't find him because MC had no obsession. And it was true, he was just so tired he was actually happy to die after helping establish ML as a hero. But ML was veeeery stubborn and finally when he died (I think), he got offered to go to heaven but when he learned that MC wasn't there, he refused and insisted on finding him. In the end, the immortal-like guy told him to kneel at a mountain to have a chance of finding 'what he wanted'. But he also warned him that if he did so, he could never move until he found what he was looking for - and the chance of finding someone who didn't even want reincarnate (just to suffer again) was very slim.

So that's why MC got s**ked into his past body when he got close to a 'statue' (it was ML!). ML also went back to his own body, but since MC wouldn't remember him, he sealed all memories of MC so they would meet again 'fairly'.

[collapse]

I think it’s a tragic love story that could have really ended badly if not for reincarnation. There weren't a lot of funny moments, except when MC got captured by the enemy and the enemy got really frustrated that his threats didn't work. And then there's the extras, starting with another reincarnation but in modern times.

Btw, MC will believe for a long time he's just an intruder. He'll try to kill himself for like 90% of the book. I think he only stops once he got with the ML, because even when he started to like the ML he was like 'I like him so I'll just float around him' lmao

He is so desensitized to anything it can be off-putting. However, knowing what happened to him before, I can sympathize. He frustrated me a lot, but not to the point I disliked him. I actually pitied ML a lot, bc wtf? why are you in love with MC? And even MC asks this question (and tells him he must have a brain disease). But again, knowing what happened before, I can't really judge him.

Spoiler

He did say he was ready to do anything to get MC back.

[collapse]

So... would I recommend this? I mean, if you feel like you can stomach this, why not. But I also know that not everyone is ready to suffer through 80 chapters for like 5 of happiness (not counting the extras). I would recommend reading it in one setting, as to not let resentment build up too much lol.

In the end, I just wish them happiness and oh my god if there were just therapists everything would be so much better <<less

Only 5 chapters translated but I like the MC and ML already. This kind of fit the enemies-to-lovers trope.

MC is lazy, salted fish but he is not an idiot or the cutesy ditzy type. I like him mainly because this. He does not try to make ML or anyone like him. ML for now not much known except he does not look like a cold typical ML (at least to me). So I don't know what to describe his personality.

Would recommend people to try and read since the first 5... more>> chapters are really interesting. This seems more a lighthearted novel. <<less

idk why this story is so highly rated. It's legit one of the most boring novels I've ever read. It's literally the MC being more incompetent that a baby and treating the ML like a nanny for "reasons". Everyone one else babying the MC while making logical leaps about the mc's "smartness". And the ML going from hating to loving the MC because of his good looks. You'd think the story would at least be funny but it's not even funny. It's just boring and plotless (even for a slice-of-life).

maybe... more>> the rest of the story will be more interesting. But as someone who has already gone through 1/3 of the novel, I've seen enough. <<less

Definitely not for everyone, and a really slow read, but somehow it managed to tug my heartstrings and make me cry at several points.

Despite the slapsticky premise it's actually a surprisingly thoughtful read at times, and has a lot of meat and mystery if you can deal with the MC. I think the intrigue and plot is actually one of my favorite things about it, and the hints peppered throughout kept me hooked, despite the read going slow enough to basically just be slice of life. The plot payoff was... more>> definitely worth it for me.

The MC is also subtly compelling. "Lazy" is sort of a misnomer; he's suicidal and misses the freedom he once had before he was burdened with his mortal shell. He's tired and miserable and trapped. His apathy can read as boring but it also makes you feel a lot of pity.

Spoiler

that bit with the swing?? F*cking sad man. MC just wants to be free

[collapse]

The star really is the ML though, whose passionate personality really fills and lifts the scenes, which is super necessary given how lazy the MC is. The amount he loves and wants to be loved and persists really made me adore him so very much. It's very "he fell first but he fell harder" except that the emperor didn't quite fall first, and I feel like not enough CNovels really tackle the heartbreaking feeling of loving someone and knowing that you just don't mean as much to them as they do to you. The supporting characters are also interesting and very interconnected, and our leads feel like leads, but also part of a conspiracy bigger than them that began long before our story did. <<less

The slow burn is indeed slow, but so worth it. The pessimist emperor's view on life really affected me as a reader 'cause I really don't see the point of living these days, I hope I will soon find my own Yin Wuzhi too who will help me realize the beauty of living.

If I was in Jiang Wu's place, being a soul with no strong desires, content with just floating around- I would also do anything to go back to that state if I suddenly became alive and handed with... more>> a lot of responsibilities.

After nearing the end, I thought...

The MC is unique I must say. At the beginning it was funny and interesting but it gets tiring to read as you go forward.

The lacked of motivation and even to just lift his body is so unbearable. This story just so brain deactivation to me. I got tired real quick. Its just the same old slothful MC with no development as far as I can see. So i'll drop it. This is not my cup of tea. I would've enjoyed it more if the author also making this plot... more>> with character development in mind where MC goes to therapy or enlightenment about how life is enjoyable and not just pain and suffering. I also got affected reading this.

Although I do like the ml, but for this novel I rate probably 2.8/5 <<less

Actually I quite liked it. It says the novel has comedic undertone but there were very few amusing scenes. As we read the novel from MC pov, there is really nothing funny about the way he behaves. ... more>>
Spoiler

He wants to die. Genuinely. He doesnt want to move, to talk, to live, he doesnt want anything. So his behaviour is not just antics of a mischievous person who wants to irritate everyone around, these are actions of a sick person. I guess the weight of responsibility from the first life as well as too many years floating around as a ghost made him like this. Maybe the latter had even more influence than the former making this apathetic personality his real personality now without any cure and way to change back. Or maybe with each reincarnation, forced to live as human, he will become more and more as a living person, not a ghost. Poor ML deserve some rest too, so I hope it really will happen.

Strangely enough I feel a bit sorry for mc's mother

Spoiler

She was coveted by her brother in law, then sold to another country as a s*ave, was married to someone else, was disliked by other women in harem, while all she wanted is to go home. Her first husband upon finding this out did not take her back imidiately but made a deal with her that she should be a spy beore she can go back. So she had to endure longer, while her life was passing, while her family members were dying, while her ties with people from her home country were breaking... You know you cannot really blame the woman for going crazy. I mean the ML is allowed go crazy after he thinks the MC has died, shouting "you all can accompany him in death" or smth; and later when he was obsessed so much that till his death he was searching for him, believing some charlatans, killing them after being deceived, etc. Why is this poor woman not allowed a valid reason for craziness? Ok, child ab*se is terrible, and nothing can excuse it, but if we consider for a moment that she got nuts after all the things that happened to her, that she was obsessed with going home, isnt it at the very least explainable? Ofc from the MC point of view she is still a guilty party and deserves punishment, but, as a woman, imagining her story after the few sentences used to describe it, filling in the details that were not elaborated on in the novel, I cannot help but feel a bit sorry for her life experience.

[collapse]

As i've said I enjoyed it a lot; frankly speaking, it is not 5 stars, more like 4, but I think it deserves a small bonus. It may not be for everyone, but give it a try, just several chapters, itmay be your cup of tea, as it was mine. <<less

Not my taste

I found it interesting to follow MC on his journey (if you can even call it, he just lazies in his bed) reading "how can he overcome himself trying to end his life?"

Okay Points

... more>> Seeing a good plottwist (MC Mom)

Having a green flag ML with FEELINGS but also questionabled interest in MC (how did he even come to love MC???!, doesnt make sense even after reading multiple chapters)

Not Okay Points

This story feels very bland, We often see MC and ML meeting and interracting with each other. But we never see other strong side characters interacting much with them. It feels like only these two live in their world. Also the whole story at most times only revolves around the emperors bedroom or court. We never see or hear about the common people or other places. Its like a theater where we only see one place the whole time with little changes in the background. Side characters are only there to support the relationship between MC and ML, but if they werent talkative I am 100% sure MC and ML would never be together I am serious yeah I know MC&ML knew each other before, but I still dont think they fit together. MC cares too late for ML, ML loves feels forced both say they like the appearance of each other when asked "do you like/love me" its just dumb. Then author tries to save it by using a side character he he likes your feelings having you by his side bla bla. It would have been good if we really see their love not through liking their appearance only but the author doesnt show it often its always omg he looks so pretty omg he is so fit. I still dont understand how ML could love MC, MC was so cruel (not serious cruel but annoying cruel).

Now to the villains villain mom was a very good villain manipulative, her pulling the strings so she gets to live the best life without worring about dying. Every villain besides her falls off, at the beginning no real villain appears its more MC and ML interacting which I found a little boring because I like having some beef and action. Anothe point which made the story less interesting was that the ML was always taking care of baby MC. Instead of being boyfriend they could come out as caretakets and patient..

I feel the author tried to fit/insert themself as the MC. There are so many things I could tell about this story like how it effected me (like other readers) in a very bad way and me hoping to forget it fast. It was not worth it, next time I should read the comments first before reading this even though I love enemies to lovers trope. <<less

Like the other reviews, I agree that the beginning seemed fun at first. However, the mc's depression really dragged on for too long and it was also sort of affecting me. By far, this MC is the laziest and most depressed soul I've ever seen and I have work to do and his depression was sorta affecting me. So after 30-ish chapters, I decided to come read Heungbo's spoilers (which, by the way, explain everything so thank you Heungbo) and spare myself the suffering. It's definitely worth reading if you're... more>> feeling too hyperactive and need something to read to calm down.

PS.

I appreciate the translator for going through this novel and hope they stay happy and healthy. <<less

For a narrative purpose, the MC's depression soaked far too many pages, making the book a slow read. As well, there is no discernible upward character arc, wherein the MC meets challenges/fails until that glorious moment when they pull themselves out of misery, which generally makes for a gripping read. I gave it a 4, but in my heart, it's 3.5 ... more>>
Spoiler

It felt like the font end of the book was the author feeling their way towards a stronger outline, because there's a massive info dump in the back end. Taking any of these revealed points and seeding them earlier in the novel would have made this book a much better read.
