Slipping on snow hard enough to die—that’s how Zhou Zuan met his end. But instead of the afterlife, he crashes into a low-magic steampunk world. There, he acquired a name that was way too long: Orwitzka Bradley Mundell, shortened to Orw.

Living as a small-time detective in the steam era seemed simple enough, but soon, he quickly discovered that… his new role might not be as ordinary as it seemed?

It took me over two weeks to finish reading this story, more than 1700 chapters in total. Now that I'm done, here's my review. (It's gonna be so long, gosh.)

The main character, Orw, transmigrates into a weak and powerless low-ranking vampire who works as a police officer. He solves cases, levels up, unlocks new areas, takes down minor and major bosses, and gradually changes the lives, environments, and mindsets of those around him, all while helping develop the economy, culture, and technology.

The place he lives in may look beautiful... more>> on the outside, but inside, it's not just human purgatory, it's basically the first layer of hell.

⚠️ WARNING: There are many disturbing cases in this story. Not horror in terms of gore or monsters, but horror that lies in the human psyche. The plot touches on dark religions, the so-called "Church of Light", corrupt nobility, and more. I feel like the author wrote 7 out of 10 characters as villains, but that contrast makes the remaining 3—the good ones—shine even brighter.

This novel had me binge-reading non-stop for 17 days. It’s completely my type. The psychological portrayal of every character is outstanding, each one comes from a different background and sees the world from a unique perspective. Every mystery written into the story has an answer, even the reason why this world developed into a human-shaped hell is explained logically.

Throughout the story, you can clearly see the growth of the main character, both physically and mentally. In a dark, gray, guilt-ridden world filled with numbness, twisted perceptions, and warped morals, the MC fights to survive with unwavering resilience. Even though the setting is heavy, the author disperses that weight across different cases, through the MC’s choices and his responses to the new world.

Up to the chapter I’ve read, the MC has twice considered giving up everything and returning to the modern world, abandoning everything: his lover, his family, his career. And it’s understandable. It's like a terminally ill patient suffering from relentless pain, it’s not life they want, but release. Similarly, the MC fears this world, fears being assimilated into it, and feels the pressure of being a pathbreaker with no visible future. It’s a painful metamorphosis he has to endure, because giving up would mean death.

The male lead isn’t some saint or moral paragon. He’s a regular person with a sound worldview and a strong sense of responsibility, who does what he can, carefully and earnestly. The author’s worldbuilding is incredibly detailed. The MC essentially wants to kick over the rice bowls (i.e., ruin the livelihoods) of the entire upper class, so his journey is as hard as hell-level difficulty. He doesn’t always push through obstacles, he has to compromise a lot. <<less
