Slightly better than average. Quite interesting at first, but the protagonist's lack of resolve to sacrifice someone else to achieve his goal shaped his character as a generic isekai protagonist. His childhood friend getting killed and the main character being blamed for her death created a nice tragic vibe at the start, but the author utterly failed to use it to his advantage to develop the story in that way made the story half-assed at best.

"The Darkness Was Comfortable For Me" is a fairly well delivered story about a surprise isekai, trials and tribulations, and emotional trauma.

MC Hikaru has his childhood friend selected by "god" arbitrarily to participate in a mass-isekai event. Chosen members of humanity will be transferred to live as they please, with live feeds being inexplicably provided of every chosen member for Earth's general populace to enjoy. The entire world is informed about the 1000 chosen in advance, with media tours ran and preparations made by everyone for the coming transfer event... more>> close to a year in advance.

However, on the day of the transfer, MC walks in on the mu*der of his childhood friend and is mu*dered himself, though waking up in the standard isekai transfer room somehow, extremely confused.

After selecting his abilities based on the past musings of his younger sisters, he's dropped into the middle of a deadly forest. At the end of this arc, he successfully escapes the forest just in time for god to drop the "fan message" feature, which shows MC hundreds of messages wishing for his death for having killed his childhood friend to be isekai'd himself.

From here on, the story focuses mainly on the MC's despair, and how this is overcome through slow but sure interactions with other people, namely love interests.

Good points for the story:

    • The MC doesn't feel amazingly overpowered. He's able to establish a very effective fighting style, so there aren't a ton of opportunities for struggle, but it's very much a glass-cannon situation.
    • The MC's emotional state is believable, being practically mentally ill from the stress of the sudden isekai, the revelations of his childhood friend's mu*der, and the belief that all the eyes watching him from the real world just want him dead. Under normal circumstances, he would have a very high-spec mental capacity, but everything is painted with pessimism, depression, and suicidal tendency.
    • There are occasional chapters featuring fan commentary/threads regarding ongoing events. These are written to be believable fans of the isekai streams, serving to offer guesses and explanations on finer details of things going on in the story and giving context on things not necessarily conveyed upfront. More importantly, they are present to give contrast to the MC's belief that he is hated, with general opinion being that the MC is not the culprit of his childhood friend's mu*der, and there are a lot of people rooting for him to build up hype in the story.
Bad things about the story:

    • Some events can end up being fairly contrived/overly convenient.
      Spoiler

Such as a rare plant he finds in the first arc's forest escape that can conveniently be used to cure his first love interest's sister of her crippling disease. Or MC's killer being chosen to get isekai'd for round 2. Or a random-ass pe*ophile obsessed with the MC's younger sister to get isekai'd with a deadly grudge against the MC for getting isekai'd at complete random and troubling his sister.

      [collapse]
    • God's isekai plan.
      Spoiler

What's God's goal with the isekai plan? Who even is God actually? Is God straight up trolling the MC and his family by re-selecting the newly revived childhood friend or her killer? At certain points, it's pretty easy to believe there's some sort of drive behind the isekai features to conveniently be adjusted to f*ck with the MC specifically, but we never learn any of it.

      [collapse]
    • Everything just kind of ends, though this was actually addressed by the author originally seeing the story as-is to be the first half of the story, with the second half coming in if the LNs do well, but if the translation exists, it's at least not here.
      Spoiler

The Web Novel wraps up with childhood friend character finally reuniting with the MC, clearing all doubts that he was actually loved and being looked out for the entire time, both antagonist chosen ones being dealt with, and MC continuing his dungeon crawling with his party of 3 lovers. However, after a successful dark spirit summon (who at least for me finally got to make a much anticipated comeback after an ominous first meeting in the first arc) there's not really a chance for her to appear again. The MC's newly developing chaos powerset points to future development towards becoming some kind of superhuman, but that doesn't get explored. Plans to move cities are abandoned, and the story just kinda ends with the party testing their limits back on floor 4. The MC's sisters definitely have a conviction to either get the MC and his harem back to Earth, or to get isekai'd themselves to join up, but this doesn't end up getting explored. It's a shame the author's so-called second half of the story isn't here.

      [collapse]
Ultimately, it's a story that manages to navigate around the pitfalls of having a broody, overpowered dark protagonist. Things don't devolve into excessive shonen, and a nice juxtaposition is established between the MC's surroundings being a pretty bog-standard isekai fantasy and the MC's mindset. It was pretty easy to root for the MC and hoping that he finds a bit of solace moving forward, and there's some pretty heartwrenching moments there. The only thing holding it back is the ending, but it is what it is. <<less

Not satisfied. I heard this is just the first part of the whole story, but I hope Author give us the next part soon, as I really enjoying the ride.

MC is a wimp, go away if you expect ruthless, overbearing, or something along the lines kind of MC here. Even I got frustated when MC is being too wimp-y at times.

Lots of overshadow and plot twists, as MC struggled to survive the cruelty of fate (or maybe the god simply want to see him suffer. You'll know why I think... more>> so when you progressed through the story). A lot of things happened that makes the MC's misunderstanding got dragged for a long, long time. You can guess the rest.

This part is like a journey of the MC growing as a human, and heals from emotional trauma he got from his past. Make you kinda rooting for him too.

Author also implements new thing I haven't seen yet in other novels so far, that is kinda like the comment sections on YouTube Live. It's not perfect, as Author themself said that it's just an experimental thing they do, but it made me feel like I'm part of the viewer of the MC's stream that's rooting for him.

The harem part is mediocre, although I like the characters. FLs have humane sides to them, although not perfect. <<less

I would probably say it's more a 3.8/5 but that does round to 4.

I'd say the weakest part of the story is the "misunderstandings" tag that isn't really done well. If it is done well then it's subtle and amusing. In this case it is done with the subtlety of a 40 ton truck and at times I felt the plot and characters were warped to artificially maintain a misunderstanding.

I'm a bit unsure if the livestream aspect of the story was really needed along with the reaction chapters from the... more>> viewers. I guess it does allow author to insert a toxic audience but the whole Earth arcs mostly felt like side chapters since there is very limited direct interaction between them.

The ending was a bit abrupt with most of the goals previously set not really being met although you'd assume they'll eventually complete them. <<less

It's an interesting story, the main character is a bit dense and frustrating at times but overall it's not a bad story. The ending felt slightly rushed, but simultaneously it definitely started to feel like it was starting to overstay it's welcome. It's nice to see an author know when it's time to wrap it up.

The story itself... Not that original, no major intrigue or narrative throughline, it's almost comfortable like some sort of isekai slice of life with some drama sprikled in. I would recommend giving it a try.

Not particularly deep or written in a way that's profound, but it's a lot of fun. I enjoy reading message boards and forums so the concept of "it's an isekai, but people are watching and discussing it like an anime", works really well for me. The drama of the protagonist being out of the loop, while their fans desperately cheer them on in the background is nice. I wish there was less focus on the 12 year old twin sisters, like we need more creepy otaku bait in media, but... more>> thankfully you can ignore most of the creep factor of the author and that community. The extent that I think about them is "there is some kid siblings who are smart", and the author doesn't seem to really get creepy about them beyond some of the fan posts about them. Probably will be unwatchable tho when/if it hits anime / manga. Action and consideration around the isekai is great. It's unfortunately looking like it's moving towards being a harem story, which is completely unnecessary. Thankfully the characters are developed and have enough dimensions to work. I'm curious how the ongoing drama / dangers of the story are going to work out. <<less
