Story focuses more on politics than romance.. After an exciting start, it started to drag so much that I ended up DNF'ing around chapter 130.

I loved how strong and shameless the FL was in the beginning, but because of the ML's terrible treatment of her and her simply taking it like a trained dog in heat, she became more spineless than shameless to me, which is irritating. The book is also difficult to MTL once it starts getting into politics.

Some people cant tolerate dub consent in books, I am not... more>> one of them, but for people who hate stuff like this, there is a scene in the book where the ML seduces the drunk FL. She was asleep, totally drunk, and

ML forced himself on her (which she did eventually went along with). Didnt bother me, but I bet some over sensitive person will read this scene and bit*h about it, so I thought I'd mention it.

Book also has these themes;

  • FL falls first.
  • FL is chases the ML, she's clingy, he's constantly pushing her away.
  • unrequited love. (She's been obsessed with him for years)
  • FL is a prostitute - spoiler:

    but it's being hinted that it's a make-believe for her spy organization. FL is pretending to be one is what I'm guessing since I didnt finish reading this.

Didn't expect to binge this in 2 days via MTL, but it's worth it. Definitely one of the best-written novels to date on strong female characters.

This is Rebirth of a Star General on steroids. Plot starts slow at first, but well layered and well rounded with revenge, strategizing political maneuvers, loyalty, comedy, and a slow burn romance-in-denial despite strong attraction the MCs have for each other with none of the draggy annoying harem dramas.

Guan Fengyue is a well-rounded character, an immoral saint at her lowest slowly rolling out her plans... more>> for revenge only to unexpectedly meet Yin Gezhi again, who's of course, is on a similar warpath. Both are equally smart and match up to each other well. If she's cunning he is too. If he's cruel she's just as bad, if not worse.

I laughed, I cried I loved all the characters because even the antagonists are so well written.

I'm definitely looking forward to the drama adaptation. <<less

Just finished reading the novel last night! I can’t believe not many people read it.

Really good revenge, political, character-driven novel. Others say there is not a lot of romance but I think the romance is well developed throughout. Usually with revenge plots it can either be one sided either focusing on the female or the male lead but this story focus on both lead. Which is really rare and is very well done. Both character are really interesting, flawed, heroic, layered and fun. The CP are both powerful and go... more>> through different changes and role reversal through different stage of the story. So in the beginning female lead is more active in chasing the male lead, in the later half the male lead is more active. And this all relate to the whole revenge, political plot and character development.

Like mention above both CP are powerful and flawed. Male lead is a cold on outside but warm on inside type. Right and wrong is clear to him, he is both black and white so a grey type character. If you treat me well I will treat you well if not then you can go die. Strong, intelligence, shameless, scheming but loyal to family and loved one, and is principle. He accept when he make a mistake and would try to make amend.

Female lead is heroic, shameless, intelligent, dead-set on revenge, and loyal. She also has a lot of trauma and actually I think this is the first Chinese novel I read where I think it deal with guilt, trauma and revenge in a very realistic way. The characters are both flawed and heroic but is because of what they went through and their action feel humane, it feel realistic and as you read through the story you come to support and understand them and wish them well.

Also the story wrap up well, as they spend a lot of time wrapping up the novel. If you like revenge, political, psychological character, well developed characters and plot, strong CP and like grey character then read it. You won't regret it! <<less
