Six months ago, tens of thousands of black phantom towers appeared all over the world, floating above the cities. Chemists, physicists, religious people… all of them could do nothing.

Six months later, people became used to the towers and no longer paid them attention.

One day, Tang Mo saw a flying insect crash into it instead of going through it. The next day, a sharp and clear child-like voice issued an announcement to all humans.

“Ding dong! November 15th, 2017. The earth is online.”

The black tower’s three iron-clad rules:

1. Everything is explained by the black tower.

2. 6 o’clock to 18 o’clock is the game time.

3. All players, please strive to attack the tower.

This is probably my favourite novel and it's done so so well, it's very plot-driven and it's super enjoyable because the world building is so great!! Not just that, but each situation is explained clearly. You don't feel like an idiot trying to understand everything, but you can clearly understand how the MC decides and does things. It's really refreshing to read!! Begging for more similar to this..

If you're in for the romance, I'm going to say this has the Slowest of the Slowest Slow Burn I Have Ever Know In My Entire Life!!!

Spoiler

The MC and ML already 'know' and talk to each other from the first chapter, but only finally meet each other almost on the 50th chapter and we get the very few s*xual Tension scenes!!! And only get together on the 200th-ish chapter.

[collapse]

But don't doubt the Love between the MC and ML! The extras help with their Alternate Universe of What if the Earth is never Online.
Spoiler

"If the earth didn’t go online, the fact that I love you still won’t change."

[collapse]

Moved to the main story. The Survival Game. For ordinary people, All the Games is going to fried your brain! Everything is going to be explained near the end of the game or at the end of the game. But still, the Game is Mind Games! Everything is related to Mind or/and Luck! And obviously Power and Strength, but that's obvious.

It's Gore! The Horror tag is not lying. People who easily disturbed by this kind of thing should back away or just prepare for the worst.

The MC and ML is Great Character which is perfect in their own way! Both MC and ML is Calm and Smart. Their Mental Strength is Strong from the start! MC was the 'Unlucky' protagonist. But he wasn't that Unlucky, just compared to others he might be slightly be Unlucky, but not in frustrating way (for the readers).

It also has quite many humorous moments! So even though all the mind games is heavy and the gore is heavy, the comedy gives nice touch! Not inappropriate and never break any important moments!

The Supporting characters is also Great!

It's really the Wildest Ride Novel with Quite Satisfying Ending I Have ever read in my entire life so far! No other Novel or Fanfiction was this Wild!

Even compared to Omniscient Reader, which is Rollercoaster Wild Ride, it wasnt as Wild Heavy as this. EARTH IS ONLINE might not be as Rollercoaster as ORV, but still the most Heavier and Wildest Novel ever!!!

Yes, I Love this without doubt! Wonderful Story and Wonderful Characters! 1000000/10 it has my Eternal Love for the Eternity and Beyond! <<less

I have never read such a novel with a detailed world. The author has such vivid imagination and I have to say, this novel is what really got me into horror type BL novels like Card Room or Escape the Infinite Chamber. The plot, romance, characters, none of it was cliche. Everything had a reason and was explainable and nothing was too over powered. The character personalities were one of a kind and complex to put in words. I loved all the game instances and the tower attack levels. Every... more>> new additional piece of information was relevant and sent shivers down my spine. Seriously. This novel is a must read.

The Earth is Online is a unique, outstanding BL that manages to depict human nature at its cruelest and most depraving core in a fallen society but also the camaraderie that develops by revealing the true meaning of trust. <<less

This is the kind of story that I will only read it once but will remember for the rest of my life. In short, it's amazing. It has been a long time since I read this story so I don't remember much but this is the story that opened up my eyes to other genres. Try it!

read it for the second time and I love even more now! When I first read it I don't understand some instances and pretty much read it without much thinking. So reading it again... more>> was so much funnn <<less

This was the first novel I ever read on this site and it set the bar high for everything I've read thereafter.

The premise of the novel is nothing I've ever seen before and each arc had me asking questions begging for them to be answered.

I like how the reader would only get as much information as the characters so we were forced to work it out with them (in my case I only figured out 1 or 2)

The characters are amazing. Our MC is written very practical even though... more>> he's very smart he doesn't go out of his way to save people opting to cover his own back and hats refreshing to see when there are so many books of the MC being selfless and going out of their way to save people.

Our ML is cool, calm and collected and is the perfect fit for our MC and I

As silly as it sounds I feel like this book raised my IQ by some point because some of the arcs were so mind bending I would just sit there for five minutes trying to comprehend how the writer came up with them.

On that note I would say if you are going to read this let your mind rest every so often. Even though it's only 200 or so chapters it packs alot in and some of it will make your brain hurt trying to understand it

I finished the book a few minutes ago and I'm f*ing crying QAQ. You know that feeling when you find a perfect book and you know you'll probably never find another one as perfect as it is???? Well that's what I feel multiplied. I have a lot of regrets, my greatest one at the moment is that I'm not a slow reader.

I almost never do this but I'm definitely rereading this after I read other books to lower my expectations of the world

To be honest, my favorite characters from this wasn't the main characters, but all the side characters. Originally, I felt like the MC and ML when introduced weren't all that appealing. Of course, as I read about them and their journey, they grew on me. But the side characters and "villains" were just all really memorable characters. There were also memorable, strong female characters and characters younger than 18 that stood out, which is a plus. (Good diversity, even other areas other than China were brought up and some had... more>> memorable characters, despite this mainly being focused in China)

Throughout the story, there are sprinkles of humor here and there, which really relieves the tension of the situation at times and allow you to have an opportunity of a "break" from the suspense. My favorite funny scene is probably when

The only thing that I would say that would be a minus would probably be the occasional typos you see here and there.

This is honestly one of the best web novels I have read and I can't help but set it as a gold standard for comparison (sorry, RIP to most of the other works past or present on my list...). You can really tell that a lot of thought and dedication has gone into the writing of this novel. There is no quality drop and I was hooked all the way. The story makes you think and keeps you on your toes - it's definitely not a bludge read. It is... more>> plotty but not overbearing and the characters are all so unique that you can't help but get invested in them. It is action-packed and brain stimulating - the romance is secondary or tertiary and a slow burn. If you're looking for fluff, sugar, spice and all things nice then you may want to look elsewhere. Some scenes are a bit bloody and probably not for the faint hearted.

I highly recommend this novel - it is the type I would re-read. Solid 5/5 star rating. <<less

This novel is BLOODY BRILLIANT! Bloody and brilliant, take note of these two words please. Tag warnings for violence, blood and gore... I mean, its a survival story so these aspects abound here.

I love the healthy relationship between Tang Mo and Fu Wenduo; their tacit understanding of each other, their trust in each other, the respect for each other... its all so refreshing to read. the slowburn romance is a major plus point of this story for me. it made me anticipate the little gestures and savour their romance. however,... more>> I was really disappointed by this thing:

Spoiler

their first time doing papapa was described only in a few words using gun metaphors!!! I mean, the whole buildup to physical intimacy was just destroyed... I really wanted to read their first time in a bit more details. this left me very dissatisfied.

[collapse]

i didnt find many problematic aspects with the story except body-shaming. I really liked the fact that women characters have been portrayed as strong and ruthless.

Spoiler

I really wanted Fly/Fox/Bai Ruoyao to be alive and well but not at the cost of Mu Huixue's life. God I love that woman so much, her death killed me. I miss you, Deer. Nevertheless, I find BRY really annoying and very adorable at the same time! He makes the story much more fun.

honestly, the story made me cry.

I highly recommend this novel. <<less

this novel is amazing and totally deserves all the 4-5 star reviews. I've never read something that really blew my mind as much as this novel did. The world building done by the author was simply incredible and I have no idea how they not only managed to come up with such complex games and puzzles, but also to use these games and puzzles to introduce characters and drive character development, all while tying them into the complicated plotline. There were so many moments when reading this novel where I... more>> just went O.O or got goosebumps after realising how the characters solved the game/something was revealed. The way this whole story unfolds is just, , , *chef's kiss*

not only was the plot and world building interesting, but the characters themselves were very 3d, which was something I greatly appreciated. There was no hero/saviour complex MC, nor was there a truly "evil" villain. This whole novel was written pretty realistically, with the characters being ones that are complex and very much human, existing across a greyscale instead of being fixed on the two sides of black and white. These characters will really stick with you throughout the novel and there isn't really any case of "oh I forgot that this person existed".

even though this novel isn't super focused on the romance, MC and ML's relationship is really cute. The way it develops and strengthens is also very realistic and believable, which is very heartwarming to see (even as we're being force fed dog food)

anyway, thanks so much to the author for writing such a brilliant novel. Also huge kudos to rainbow turtle for translating this. The translation quality is good and the translator also takes the time to explain some of the more complicated parts to us clueless readers^^

tldr: this novel is the embodiment of big brain energy. U may feel rlly dumb when reading this but I guarantee that the plot and characters will blow you away. <<less

I absolutely love this novel. I would give it a hundred stars if I could, since it is definitely the best BL novel I have ever read. There isn't that much fluff but the s*xual tension between the MC and ML is definitely there. The MC is probably the best MC, where they are not s*upid, but they are actually one of the most powerful and smart people in the novel, and he is not so much weaker than the ML like in other BL novels. I actually feel like... more>> my IQ rose after reading this novel, it is just the right combination of action, suspense, and romance, and I would recommend it to everyone even to non BL readers. The character development is slow and gradual not too abrupt and the MC grows stronger because of effort not some unfair cheat he gets. I had second doubts when I first started this novel but when I read it, I loved it. So if you are having second doubts, just read it, I assure you its not a waste of time. <<less

One of the best bl novels I've read and thats saying something since I'm very picky in my choices in novels.

Story plot put together very well, the games are logical and very smart. High IQ games ahahahaha.

MC and ML are the ideal power couple. Personalities are likable.

Horror survival type with bl element, so exactly up my lane. If anyone can give me recommendations on similar novels please do!

All in all worth a read!

Wow okay...

When I first started this novel, I had kinda hoped for a nice BL, with like, some action and survival aspects on the side. It wasn't that I hadn't read the 'psychological' and 'thriller' tags, I just kinda had hopes for adventure, sci-fi romance and found the vague description intriguing.

After reading through a fair bit, I went into shock. It had been a fair way in, and I guess it only really sunk in at a particular instance that it wasn't going to be a light and easy read.... more>>
Spoiler

The said instance was Mario's instance, in which thousands of people had died in. It was really scary knowing that good old mario wanted to trap everyone in the game forever and laid a trap that made it pretty damn inevitable. Way to ruin my childhood.

[collapse]

Maybe it was because of the psychological elements, but I felt it was bordering on horror. There had been signs along the way, but that was a definite red flag.

As someone who isn't a big fan of horror, violence or anything that could potentially give me nightmares, this was a big 'no'. I nearly stopped reading, but I ended up going back, and I'm so glad I did.

After I got accustomed to it, I found that it fit the novel really well, and there were some great action scenes and mysteries that made me unable to stop reading, or even made me question life. There were some really cool ideas and concepts in here, and for a slight fan of escapism, it was really well done in how this otherworldly situation was constructed.

While this wasn't my usual genre, it gave me something I never knew I needed, and it was incredibly good. I would 10/10 recommend, but just keep in mind that romance isn't really the main focus, and while the main ship is hella cute, it isn't exactly a light and fluffy kind of novel.

Edit: It now has the horror tag. <<less

I'm absolutely in love with this novel. I wish I could forget it all just to read all over again from the beginning as the first time.

The romance is believable. It's slow paced and discreet (except for this one time that I won't spoil) as its not the main focus. I would love an extra with the censored scenes hehehe.

There's comedy at the right dosis.

What I loved more is how the author linked everything and put a lot of references and logic. It's the opposite of a brainless story (that... more>> you find everywhere). The games are interesting and the solutions surprising.

I was worried about the ending because of the theme that is so easy to screw with, but worried for nothing. The ending was surprisingly satisfying. Except for the fact that the novel endend, of course.

Good novel and very interesting read. The plot is quite unique in a sense and it's one of the rare books where I can't guess what would happen due to the nature of the book's main theme - games. The games function as intellectual puzzles and are not as simple as they look so they're quite fun to read about.

Spoiler

Only slightly disappointed at the ending. I kinda wanted Mu Huixue to survive which she could've but instead, she sacrificed herself after realising that there was nothing in the world she'd miss.

[collapse]

There is some China bias in the book but not enough for me to call it Nationalism so it's quite alright. Although it seems like the author glossed over most countries except America, China and Europe.

The BL in the story is close to unnoticeable and really not in your face so even people that wouldn't read BL novels should pick this up imo. <<less

Most stories I read on here are BL but strangely enough I think what makes this particular story so interesting is that the BL aspect is not the main focus.

Exciting things happen w/o depending on romance drama. The ML is cool without being a super rich and famous CEO/actor. The MC is super lucky (like most mc's) but I like the way the author added some humor to it. Many times his lucky moments or gifts come with a downside! If your not sure yet, read a chapter or two... more>> it's a gem.

Tldr: BL with well thought out plot. Action packed. Smart characters. Not a lot of "pa pa pa" but not hella dry either. <<less

I started reading this novel coincidentally, having found there's enough chapter of it to start. I never really read the tags on the left of the page, before start reading the story, so it isn't until later that I found out this is a yaoi story. I think most people who reviewed this story are so far focused on the yaoi element, and there aren't a lot of them around, so they inflate their reviews of it, because I see lots of 5-star reviews. I'll do something different and review... more>> it from the viewpoint of someone not necessarily a fan of yaoi.

The set-up is simple: librarian was minding his own business when an alien entity throws the entire world into some kind of a game. One doesn't live in the game, but instead come in and out at certain intervals. It's very reminiscent of 'No Game, No Life, ' which I believe this thing is based on.

The sense of peril and suspense is upped, in this novel, since the MC doesn't face risks of death only in the game, but also in real life. And to make it more interesting, the dangers in game and in life are different. In the game, one loses one's life mostly by losing the game, which themselves are less action-y and more cerebral. In-game, the novel reads more like a puzzle-solving and riddles sort. In life, the problems are more action-like, such as being attacked, maimed or killed by other people.

I haven't read many novels in this genre, so I don't know how original the puzzles are, in this one, and there's also obviously things lost in translation, along the way, obviously. But for me, they're good enough. They're interesting enough, and although they sometimes feel contrived, trying to be cleverer than they actually are, there is enough smarts here to make you go, 'oh, yeah, should've thought of that, ' when the puzzle is revealed.

The chapters are long and content-filled. Action moves fast, and there isn't very much filler, so far. Up to ch. 58, it feels like I'm reading plenty of content, whereas with some novels, you could have read 300 chapters, and not feel like you've gone very far, at all.

So far, I haven't read anything overtly yaoi, in this novel. The MC has self-identified as being openly gay, and there is a love interest being put in front of us, but they haven't done anything that would otherwise make the story a yaoi story. It won't bother me if it becomes more overt in the story, but at this point, I think it may be more of a distraction from the plot itself, which is quite good. Maybe more than 'quite good, ' but not quite 'excellent, ' either.

I'll keep on reading, and if you're looking for an interesting read, I recommend this novel, even if you're not looking specifically for yaoi. It's worth reading. <<less
