For transparency: translated parts are only up to chapter 180. I MTL-ed chapter 181 to 723 (ending + extras)

This came out of 2016 so I guess, the more popular (that has many reviews in novelupdates) CN novel, “Eldest Sister, Why Haven’t You Married Yet?” that came out of 2019 is the rip off. In my personal opinion, this novel is better in terms of being a more nuanced and full rounded story.

There are a lot of similarities:

-The eldest daughter which is the MC who married late but was highly... more>> celebrated.

-MC’s second sister who is very gentle and ended up with someone humble who kinda works for the MC.

-MC’s feisty third sister.

-The scheming uncle and aunt who their grandparents favor.

But what sets this story apart is in the details. For one, the third sister here did not end up with a stoic military general eventhough it was somehow teased and I even wondered at some point but the plot twist is something that is fitting and has lots of foreshadowing looking back.

Spoilers:
Spoiler

The third sister ended up being taken by the emperor to the palace as a concubine. Taken is a strong word (but I am admittedly biased because in my opinion, the emperor doesn’t deserve love. I understand having other women and that no woman can’t gatekeep the emperor and all but does it have to be her maid? In her own bed while she was pregnant causing her to miscarry?) because the third sister fell hard for the emperor that she came willingly.

I related so hard to MC at this point. She tries so hard. Another thing is that MC is very calm and eventhough she’s distant with the second household (her uncle’s family) and her grandparents who were biased, she never hesitates to help eventhough their households have already been divided. I can say that the MC here is too... forgiving (?)

Another key difference is the mother. I prefer this mother in comparison to the mother in “Eldest Sister, Why Haven’t You Married Yet?”

Let me explain:
Spoiler

Spoilers: The mother here is gentle, timid and softspoken like the mother in “Eldest Sister, Why Haven’t You Married Yet?” BUT MC’s mother here is better in my opinion. She at least tries to stands up for her children. She did her best and has this eversuffering “fawning response” especially when her husband died but when she found out that her sister in law (MC’s aunt) is spreading rumors about MC, she tried to like confront the aunt that lead to her being pushed into the ground while being pregnant with MC’s youngest sibling/only brother. The mother died but before she did, she laid in the guilt real thick to get her way. She was bleeding to death when she begged for a separation to pave the way for MC and her siblings because MC was subtly pushing for the separation for the longest time now.

Spoiler

I understand that MC’s mother’s last dying wish is for all her children to marry for love and for MC not to fight but damn... I don’t know if I could ever share a meal, share a table, live in the same compound as someone who caused my mom’s death, sold me off in my first life, caused the death of my youngest sibling in my first life and maaaaaaaany more. Like for real... what the f*ck?

[collapse]

The romance is well done here. I have nothing but good thing to say about the ML. Even the second male lead is good. The way the romance was handled here is *chef’s kiss*

Overall: A good looooooong read <<less
