Bai Zhi is an eunuch—a fake eunuch.

This story could be good for those patient enough to read through it. However, I am not one of them.

The MC and the FL always argues with each other, and bickering couples can be good and funny if done well. However, I find them to be frustrating to read. Between the two, I find MC more annoying than FL. If anything, I quite like FL.

The plot itself seems interesting though! I would love to read a story like this to the end and the conspiracies behind everything is enticing. I... more>> like how we see the schemes from the outside instead of being the one who makes all the schemes. It feels novel to be on the weaker/canon fodder point of view. Of course, there are many other stories who also show cannon fodder point of view, but I don't know, I just like the approach taken here. Being an eunuch is quite the unique position.

I even have theories about what's happening in the palace.

It is described that the Empress treats the crown prince as her enemy and dislikes him. But FL notices the Empress glancing at MC when they were at the same place. So, my theory is that MC is the real child of the empress and the crown prince is just a fake.

The old concubine who lives at the cold palace also treats MC kindly. So, that adds to the suspicion.

Don't know if I'm right though!

But let's discuss the main couple a bit more.

MC is a hypocrite. Which I suppose is very human of her... For example...

MC says she was taught by her adoptive father to treat everyone with respect and always smile even if that someone doesn't have high standing. After all, in the palace, who knows what will happen. A beggar might become a prince. So, MC treats both the servants there and abandoned concubines in the cold palace (a section of the palace where MC lives) in a gentle manner and always smiles at them.

But then she turns around and treats FL horribly.

FL is sent to MC's house with her limbs tied and mouth gagged, unable to move. So, what does MC do? She removes FL's gag but leaves her to tied up on bed. MC leaves her there for two days without food and water despite FL begging her to be untied.

MC reasons that it's because FL is a 'troublemaking princess'. So, she leaves her tied up lest FL stirs up some trouble.

I can somewhat understand because MC must be upset at dying alongside FL despite being innocent in her previous life. But like hello? FL was assaulted by the crown prince and--according to the MC--killed him while defending herself. So it wasn't even FL's fault. FL is the victim. Why the hell is MC mad at FL?

Also, she also did the whole 'tying her up and leaving her on the bed for two days without food' in her previous life too. Back then, FL was just a princess of a fallen kingdom who hadn't wronged MC in anyway (Arguably, she still hasn't wronged her even in the second life). Yet MC still treated her that way.

What happened to being kind to everyone? What happened to her adoptive father's teaching? For all she knows, FL could become powerful in the future!

Also, MC blames FL for causing her death. However, she does later acknowledge that FL is actually a victim in all of it. But she continues to treat FL in the same mean way so... I guess it's just become a habit of her to treat FL that way?

Anyway, FL is also mean to MC but, in her case, it's totally justified after what MC made her go through. I want her to just leave MC, but at the same time, I understand she's unwilling to do so because--as a former princess--following MC might be her only way of survival in her eyes.

Well, maybe MC gets better in the future and apologises to FL. I have no doubt MC and FL will also get along better, fall in love, and treat each other more kindly somewhere down the line. However, I have no patience to read that far.

All in all, it's a mediocre novel that could have been great if only the main couple wasn't so frustrating. The bones are there, but the execution leaves something to be desired.
