As Liang Sizhe looked back on his journey on becoming film emperor, he knew he had mainly been favoured by fate — and Cao Ye was the one absolutely indispensable part of his destiny.

Note: There are two separate timelines, and they’ll alternate with each other. ‘N’ in front of the chapter means ‘now’ (adult) and ‘P’ means ‘past’ (youth).

Hello! Translator here :)

Just as a quick note before I start my review, the 'unreliable summary' bit in the novel description is there on purpose and is taken directly from the raws and the main page of the novel on Changpei. The author wrote both the 'proper summary' and the 'unreliable summary' specifically, so whoever's been removing it, please stop!

Anyway!

The Eye of the Storm is very much a story about love and how long it can last despite so many challenges and seemingly hopelessness over the years. This story... more>> takes place over a decade and is told in a non-linear format, where the readers are in the present in one 'chapter' and in the past in the next. The author makes it quite clear which timeline we're in, as 'N' in front of the chapter number stands for 'now' and 'P' stands for 'past'. (Just as a note, the author split up each chapter into multiple parts. The book was uploaded as 127 ‘chapters’, but each ‘chapter’ was titled as “Chapter 1.1”; “Chapter 1.2” etc. Until the end at “Chapter 11.13”. This book is essentially 127 chapters. Each ‘part’ is a full-length chapter.)

The dynamics of the couple in this story is essentially friends to rivals to strangers to business partners to friends to coparents to lovers. The relationship between the MC and ML changes so much throughout the years, and Tan Shi writes the shift so well. The first 'chapter' (which is actually the length of 7 chapters in a normal book) introduces us to the MC and ML in the current day and provides us with a thousand questions of why they're acting the way they are. Chapter 2 takes us all the way back to the beginning where they met, and that's where we meet our characters before they get dragged over the metaphorical coals. It starts off fairly lightly, and then as we get into the meat of the story, you're slowly given the answers why our main characters act the way they do in the current day. I would say the bulk of the 'main plot' is set in the past, so it's actually very very important to pay attention to those chapters. Little things that may seem unimportant might come back and stab you in the heart :') (as I've personally experienced). Things get very serious in the middle, and there were moments I honestly couldn't breathe through the sense of suffocation and hopelessness that came from the book -- but don't worry, those moments are actually very in character and not dog blood at all.

Now, this book features a switch couple. Therefore the usual MC/ML way of referring to our main characters don't quite apply here, and it's debatable who is actually who! I personally think Liang Sizhe is the MC, but there are strong arguments for Cao Ye :) And yes, you actually get to see them switch in s*x scenes! Liang Sizhe is a multi-winning film emperor, while Cao Ye is president of what is essentially a film production company (and is the son of the director who raised Liang Sizhe to fame).

As a showbiz novel, this book also features a lot of films, and the author has 'written' some really interesting ones for Liang Sizhe I would personally really want to watch in real life. We get to follow each film as Liang Sizhe films them, and I would say each major film of his is a crucial insight into his mind during those months and years (as well as how he sees his relationship with Cao Ye). But the book never goes too far into those films; Tan Shi always remembers to keep the reader with the actual characters and not the characters in the films.

There is loss, there is pain, and there is courage and perseverance. You will cry for both Cao Ye and Liang Sizhe.

For those who like sun/moon metaphors, I would say Cao Ye is the sun (particularly in the chapters set in the past), while Liang Sizhe is the moon.

Please note: this is a very, very, very slow burn novel. Things take time to build up before everything explodes, but when it does, it is so very worth it.

Tags include: entertainment industry, switch couple, strong couple, HE, slow burn. I would also include: childhood sweethearts (sort of), pseudo-reunion after break up, pining and super slow burn.

As for TW/CW:
Spoiler

mentions of s*xual ab*se towards a minor, mentions of casting couch, h*mophobia/homophobic jokes, main character disgusted by male touch.

/start of rant That's actually Typhoon Eye (or Eye of the Typhoon), and not Eye of the Storm (since a storm can be of any type, but a typhoon in this novel has a special meaning). I really wish translators didn't take such liberties with the titles (I'm also looking at you, Muted - real name Mu Ran, since Muted doesn't make much sense either). /End of rant

A great novel by Tan Shi, one of my favorite danmei authors. It's related to another title by her, Rear-End Collision (both on... more>> Gongzicp). Both highly recommended if you like showbiz danmei. <<less

i know ill never be able to read such beautiful characters again in my life. In my heart they are both protagnists (no MC ML shi) and have an addictive charm and will leave u empty after u are done reading, happened to me. Im still in deep with this one and haven't been able to pick another one which could keep me engaged in its storyline or characters and always end up leaving in the middle. Wish I could forget it and read once again anew. Such rich and... more>> detailed story. <<less

Overall it was ok. Towards the end it really took a lot out of me just to finish the novel. I read the novel because it's the same author as Paper Plane (Which I love). I think it was hard for me to submerge myself into the storyline and characters because it kind of jumps around from current to past back to current. Because right when I was starting to feel sad for the young ML and MC it jumps to the future and the current situation is different.

I have no words to really describe how much I loved this novel. I don't typically enjoy non linear storytelling, but this novel weaved the timelines together perfectly through symbolism and foreshadowing, such that the jumps never felt abrupt or out of place.

Both main characters share equal parts of the POV, and we get to see how their inner worlds drive them to behave as they do. I went through an entire emotional roller coaster following their storyline both together and separately, and I can safely say I've never felt... more>> this protective or attached to characters in a novel before.

Cao Ye is now the CEO of his own production company, while Liang Sizhe is an acclaimed actor with multiple trophies to his name, but their past takes us to when they first met, when Cao Ye was just the son of a famous director, and Liang Sizhe the promising violinist who was forced to give up his craft after a terrible accident. As slightly more advanced character profiles (no big spoilers) :

Spoiler

Liang Sizhe:

- 2 years and 3 months older than Cao Ye

- A brilliant actor, relying more on method acting in the past, but now more easily separates himself from the role

- Very secretive, responds "guess?" when he doesn't want to answer a question

- Brooding loner in his youth with a bit of a temper, was much more flamboyant and confident before his accident

- Quietly doted (and still dotes) on Cao Ye

Cao Ye:

- Son of famous director, daddy issues

- "I'm not interested in men", has a repulsion to being touched by members of the same sex

- Gets along with everyone, easygoing, but with a reverse scale for Liang Sizhe

- Playboy, new girlfriend every 2 months

- Very innocent and pure hearted in his youth

[collapse]

The romance is very slow to develop, and it takes almost the entirety of the novel for the characters to finally get together, but the interactions between them are well worth the wait. Their youth together was so heartwarming and I laughed many times at their antics together, making the heartbreaking events leading up to their eventual separation even more devastating.

This is by far one of the best written novels I've read, and one that I would absolutely recommend everyone to read. It's a longer novel at 500k+ words, but I could not put it down after starting and finished it all in a day or so. I noted down so many quotes, saving them for my own reference:

Spoiler

"They seemed to be born on the same wavelength and could receive each other's signals. Perhaps this feeling was too rare, so after so many years, Cao Ye still missed the feeling of chatting together on Yinsi Street." (4.4)

Unexpectedly, Liang Sizhe dropped a bombshell the next second: "I have a crush on your cousin, don't you see at all?" (4.7)

"Nothing." Cao Ye said, thinking to himself, he's so pretty, why isn't he a girl? If he was a girl, he would definitely date Liang Sizhe. (5.5)

The days without Cao Ye were much more boring, but it was also a return to normal. There were no interesting things, and no opportunities to laugh. Perhaps "loss" was too common in his life. He had lost his parents, hobbies, future... He had lost many important things before, so he subconsciously knew calmly that he would lose Cao Ye soon. All losses were no big deal. Life had to go on, whether you were willing or not. (5.9)

Helpless, at a loss, and doomed... He had experienced all these emotions in the past year. He had developed the ability to block out his emotions and fall into a deep dream. This time was no exception. He cleared all thoughts from his brain, leaving only endless darkness, and forced himself to sleep. (5.12)

He's a bit like Lin Huan, Cao Ye suddenly had this thought in his mind. No wonder he felt that Lin Huan looked familiar when he first saw her. At that time, he thought that they hit it off at first sight and even used the excuse to strike up a conversation. But he never thought about Liang Sizhe. In those years, he always avoided thinking about Liang Sizhe. Thinking of him would make him feel inexplicably upset.

However, Liang Sizhe on that poster was more beautiful than Lin Huan, a thought which may seem absurd, as a man playing a woman should look a bit weird, but the overall feeling of the poster could not be described in any other words except "beauty", a kind of beauty that transcends gender and combines both strength and softness. It is beautiful in a unique way, even a bit erotic. (6.4)

So it's no big deal not to be with the person you like. Instead of the two of you becoming enemies in the end, it's better not to start at all and eliminate all possibilities of things going wrong. (7.5)

Become very powerful. Powerful enough to protect the innocence of the young one. (7.9)

They talked and laughed all the way up the mountain. Cao Ye felt that being with Liang Sizhe was much more interesting than being with a girl.

He thought that if Liang Sizhe could not accept Cao Ye getting drunk late at night and bringing home a girl he doesn't know, then he would just change. He only went to find girls to have fun because he was bored, but he didn't feel bored at all when he was with Liang Sizhe. (8.5)

Life is so helpless. Ten years ago, my parents who accompanied me passed away suddenly. Ten years later, even the only dog who accompanied me is gone. (8.8)

"Are you very sad, Liang Sizhe?" Cao Ye couldn't help but ask.

There was silence over there, and after a moment he said, "It's okay, I'm used to it." He paused, and then said, "Whether it's a person or a dog, there will be a day when they leave, it's just a matter of time. I figured this out many years ago." (8.9)

Those words that he wanted to avoid, that he didn't know how to respond to, that he never dared to think deeply about, now pointed to one clear thought word by word: Liang Sizhe likes you, he has liked you for many years. (10.1)

"Cao Ye, I'm going to kiss you, " Liang Sizhe looked at him and lowered his voice, "I heard that you are homophobic, so this action may make you feel uncomfortable. I will approach you slowly, and you have about ten seconds. You can avoid me at any time." (10.2)

This novel has a special place in my heart. I love author Tan Shi I became fan after reading paper plane. Thank you author for this amazing work.

This is the novel that never made me skim through chapters. I usually spend a day or two to read long novels but I spend like Three/four days reading it.

Two teenagers who were worlds apart- meet eachother, became friends, spend three innocent months at Yanshi, drifting apart, misunderstanding, reconciling, falling in love and watching them growing up was like raising my own child.... more>> You will love Cao Ye and Liang Sizhe. I am very bad at writing reviews or expressing my feelings so bear with me.

I bawled when

That was the most vivid scene of his boyhood.

Picked this up because of seeing this couple in Tailgate (追尾). It has a switch couple which makes the smut super spicy. The story alternates between past and present as you're introduced to their younger days which started off warm and sweet then turned sour. Tan Shi pen down the delicate moments very well, everything that happened in their younger days makes you painful after reading the present chapters.

Story was painful as it started off as a secret crush which continues for 10 years. Cao Xiu Yuan, the director in... more>> the story also made many films that even I would like to see life adaptations of. They're really stories within the story. The whole film industry settings were quite well written. I suffered for like 98 chapters before the sweet parts come in but even then there's still parts which made me cried. I felt like I witness two teenagers growing up and becoming the adult they are now. <<less
