Actor Si-joon attracted attention for his outstanding appearance, but became a national laughingstock, earning nicknames like ‘pretty garbage’ and ‘flower screen’ due to his terrible acting skills. He missed his father, who was the only one to support his dreams and didn’t disparage his efforts, but his characteristically stiff expression and monotonous voice held him back. After being humiliated by a world-renowned director at an audition, Si-joon falls asleep in his office-tel filled with stacks of script analysis notes… Surprisingly, he wakes up on a morning 7 years ago. With his regression, Si-joon obtains a ‘Method Mask’ and once again dreams of an actor’s life.

Preliminary review at chapter 10.

An average but enjoyable acting entertainment novel. MC was a very bad actor who regresses to the beginning of his career and gains an item that gives him acting abilities so he can live his dreams. It's a standard "regresses and uses knowledge/skills from the future to become OP and right wrongs" kind of story. Except the MC really had no talent in his past life. Usually in series like these, the MC was wronged because of circumstances outside of their control and the cheat item just helps them set things right. But the MC really is just that bad. He admits that, despite his years of experience and study, he could never identify the specific problems in his acting. Now, the requirements for using the item seem to be guiding the MC on how to analyze roles for himself but this is something he should have already known about after being an actor for 7 f*cking years. So it seems like the MC will gain the skills to be eventually be able to act without using the cheat item at all.

This element of the plot also probably won't matter in the long run; the point of entertainment novels is to watch the protagonist do different projects, read people's reactions to them, resolve a little drama, and develop their skills and career over time. That's probably where this is going, with the first few chapters just being an excuse to set up the plot, and it will probably become another satisfying entertainment novel. But man are the first 7 chapters a hurdle that needs to be jumped over. The novel already seems to be getting better after the first arc, so don't let the quality of the initial chapters discourage you. <<less

At the time of writing this, free chapters from DarkStar are available until 88, even though there are no links here. And they're definitely worth reading.

It starts off decently, but becomes a lot better over time.

The "Method Mask" that allows the MC to experience various versions of the scenes he has to act over and over again is responsible for allowing his excellent script analysis to be realised in acting, but it's not an omnipotent cheat item. It's based on his analysis, and even after that, his acting has minor... more>> flaws that the MC has to fix, even if it's "good enough" overall.

There are some repeated themes like people assuming that he's only handsome and can't act (even though after his regression he can) and the MC having low self-esteem due to his past, which is then perceived as being overly humble.

But it's not dragged out over and over again, so it's almost refreshing to see this reaction in between the praise he gets on a constant basis.

The number of recurring characters is still somewhat limited, or rather even characters that do develop relationships with the MC are not depicted in much detail, mostly summed up in phrases like "we stayed in touch". So the focus really isn't on the MC's relationship with others which I personally like to read in novels, but mostly his own development and a few notable scenes / jobs he gets.

This is subjective, but my personal favorite character is his older brother.

The description of the analysed emotions and emotional scenes depicted in-character are very good, to the extent that I almost care more about the characters the MC plays than the MC's life outside of them.

Still, through the empathy for those characters, the reader can empathise with the MC who analysed them and experienced the roles through his mask.

At this point, he's still actively using the mask for practice, but he has run into some limitations, so hopefully and presumably he will overcome it in the end and make the diverse active techniques he imitated through it truly into his own.

Overall it has been an enjoyable read with not too much to criticise, but also not to the extent of being a masterpiece. <<less

So far its just people praising how handsome the MC is. The MC gets a cheat system, but they don't really go into detail or how it may be transforming the MC. Just a way to cheat so far. MC goes from useless to near perfect in acting.

Not too impressed.
