When the queen of acting Tan Ruo died, she discovered that she had actually transmigrated into the daughter of her arch-nemesis, the top idol Ji Mo. What’s more, her arch-nemesis’ wife was actually her fan! This was simply outrageous!

Fortunately, after an awkward period of adjustment, facing her mom who had been a fan since her acting debut, the little queen naturally called her “Mommy”. However, facing the former arch-nemesis Ji Mo… sorry, no thanks.

This is a really fun read so far, it's more of a slow life so far but it's not boring. I would suggest reading it if you're looking for something that more relaxing and laid back.
UPDATE:

I really like how strong the female protagonist is, she reminds me of the kind of woman that girls look up to I think. I would definitely recommend if you like a strong female protagonist.

UPDATE 2:

Spoiler
[collapse]

it's an amazing book and it was a very enjoyable read BUT! I feel unsatisfied with the ending, it might not be like that for everyone but I will say I was expecting more, it felt like it was being rushed for the last like 5 chapters. Maybe that's what made me feel that way, idk, but that's my only issue with it

If you are looking for a relaxed slice of life novel, this is for you. This isn't a romance based novel. The novel mainly focused on MC's life - her dream, family, achievement, friends etc... though if you are looking for realism, you might find some fault within it. (I personally don't feel like those are the problem). And since MC didn't have the goal to take revenge, the story doesn't go that route (the main person she takes grudge with is the arch nemesis/father). There is no drama (only... more>> few in the beginning). MC is OP. I don't find MC annoying. She is a strong achiever and logical person. I think the story can be longer though the ending doesn't left me unfulfilled or anything but I wish there would be some additional special chapters. <<less

Taking a break on this novel...

Rating: 3.2/5

Summary: Tan Ruo was an orphan who worked her bu*t off to become a star actress, only to get herself involved in a hilarious rivalry over endorsements and her biggest fan, Ling Chujin, with her fan's boyfriend, superstar singing dancing idol Ji Mochen. They hated each other but when Tan Ruo dies from over working, she reincarnates as Ji Ruochu, the daughter of Ji Mochen and Ling Chujin. What follows is Ji Ruochu's second lease on life as she works hard and enjoys being... more>> pampered by her biggest fan and her once-hated rival.

Warnings: Mentions of human-trafficking, kidnapping, harassment, harsh language towards a minor, confronting patriarchal beliefs, bullying

Going out of order here, I'll start with impressions of the plot.

Plot

This is arguably one the greater detractors for me in this novel. It's primarily why I got bored reading this novel. There really isn't much plot. It feels like the author started off with one idea for the story, but then got side-tracked with other things trying to build MC's image up and lost steam due to the now impracticability of the character setting and original direction. It's like the author wrote themselves off the original track and is now just confused in the wilderness. As it stands, at chapter 163, I really don't know where this story is going. I know it's completed and I don't have that much left, but I have so little motivation to continue because of the lack of momentum in the story.

Spoilers below as to what the plot has done so far and why I'm confused below.

Spoiler

After MC wakes up as the daughter of her former biggest fan and rival, she just grows up like normal. This is not an issue, but there's nothing interesting in her parents' lives despite them being a famous singer and dancer and a rich (? I don't know what her mother does except be from a rich family) lady. When she's four, we have some interesting stuff as she and her father join a "Dads-in-charge" show that's about celebrity or celebrity-adjacent dad's and their kids going to a rural village to film. We get the most excitement at this point because MC almost dies and uncovers something about her reincarnation, MC's dad gets to actually do something, and they spoil a trafficking operation accidentally. Up until this point, the story felt like the future direction would be MC eventually returning to the entertainment circle as the daughter of a superstar and fulfilling all her past unfulfilled desires.

Unfortunately, this is where the plot starts to unravel. Honestly, the author could have cut off here or time-skipped from this point to when MC is old enough to start her acting career. Next we see MC get training as a noble girl from a mega rich family. She learns various skills and then it's time to start pre-K. She does well in the pre-K entrance examination and is judged to be a prodigy. She thus enters a special experimental class where she and nine other kids are taught at an accelerated pace. In fact, they are so fast, so thorough, and so intelligent that all ten of them skip multiple grades. By the time that they are 10, they've started middle school, by 12, they've competed and won in the International Olympiad for math and science, by 15, they've completed their college entrance exams and entered the top 2 universities in China. In the meantime, they've also become very talented martial artists and MC has acted in two hit movies as well as become the number one highest scorer in the college entrance exams. MC also, coincidentally, started investing at age 10 and has made a lot of money that way.

The issue is that MC's goals are very unclear. It seems she's going to go into acting but then she's busy with so many other things. Why focus so much on her academics? It's not that people who are in entertainment can't be intelligent but it's so illogical with her focus on economics. The focus of the entire middle of the story, a good 50-70 chapters is on MC's academic achievements and her self-cultivation. Also, how come someone who was an average student with no investment specialty turns into a completely different person with reincarnation? It's not like she received special training or nurturing with that in mind. On the contrary, they tell us again and again how her parents, who were the slackers of their families, don't want to pressure her in anyway and are reluctant to let her sign up for extracurriculars.

She's also 15 freaking years old. The suspension of disbelief has been broken and I'm just sighing with all the other illogical aspects. Those will be discussed outside of this spoiler.

Again going out of order, next is Characters

One of the worst things is that the author tells us that MC is amazing but doesn't really SHOW us anything. MC is more mature than her age, obviously, and is judged to be a genius because she does well at the elementary school curriculum. The narrative is sure to emphasize here that MC's not actually a genius, she just works really hard. The issue is that we don't actually see MC do anything. We're told that she's number one and she does all these things. We never get a scene of her studying, learning martial arts, painting, piano, or calligraphy. I don't have a problem with MC being so amazing but without seeing her do anything, it's hard to believe it.

My gripe here, though, is not necessarily MC's character, it's all the others (or lack thereof). My god is this author incredibly lazy about minor characters. Pretty much anyone that's not MC just exists to function as her hype squad or entourage. Her superstar dad might as well have just retired when she was born because all he does is act clingy towards his wife and daughter and overreact to stuff in MC's life. Her mother doesn't exactly have a career it seems but she too is just obsessed with her daughter. By the time MC is in pre-K, she's half-parenting her parents. To be fair, they do love her a lot but that's all the author will let them do. They don't have their own goals, careers, friendships, or relationships, even familial, they're just on standby to hype up MC.

MC's extended family is so inconsequential yet incredibly important to her family's maintenance that it's infuriating we get ZERO information about them. We're told that her dad's generation had three brothers and one female cousin. Of the three brothers, her dad is the second brother and the least impressive. Her eldest uncle was a genius in school, very influential in society, and is a politician who protects their family. Her younger uncle was a genius in school, very impressive in society, and it the current head of their family company. What is this company's name? What do they do? irrelevant. Are her uncles married? Maybe. They have children. What are these children, MC's cousins, names? No clue. We don't even know how many she has. We do know, however, that MC is the only girl in this generation so all of her cousins are probably male. Ok but what about her grandparents? Of course, their names are Ji Grandfather and Ji Grandmother. On the maternal side we have Ling Grandpa and Ling Granny and maybe an uncle? Unclear. Again the hilarious part is that her family's money and influence come from this larger extended family but we know nothing about them except that one uncle is in politics, the other in business, her dad was the dumbest, and the whole family adores and protects Ji Mochen and MC.

What about MC's friends? The other 9 kids that were in her specialized class. Of which, we only knew three of their names before they went to the Olympiad competition and learned one more name after they went to university. They apparently do everything together, but we don't really know much about them. They are mainly just there for the *effect* of MC being the best of the best and not lonely.

Romance

Speaking of other characters, there is no romance in this novel at all. I really don't mind that but not having romance doesn't mean that you don't have to develop other characters.

You might think, shouldn't there be some romance between Ji Mochen and Ling Chujin as MC's parents? Not really. We're just old how in love they are and even then, it feels more like Ji Mochen is in love with Ling Chujin whereas Ling Chujin is just... there?

Rating Explanation

It's readable. Up until the focus shifted to MC and her entourage being the bestest smartest most amazingest in the world, it was quite enjoyable. I had a lot of other expectations for this novel that I'm not seeing fulfilled.

Comparing to other novels with similar themes, the main drawback of this novel is its lack of care to anyone outside of MC. The author just really wants you to know how amazing MC is at the expense of any plot or characters. Other such novels tend to add more intrigue to the parents' lives while the MCs are young and then time skip or simultaneously juggle the MC's academics with their eventual goals. Similar novels where MCs don't have strong directions are balanced with an interesting cast of characters. This novel lacks both.

This is also why at chapter 163, I have very little motivation to continue onwards. <<less

This is pure family and friendship story, no romance. But, it is such a hidden gem!!! I am glad I give this story a chance although the rating was not high.

The synopsis didn't really describe the actual story. This novel is not only about becoming daughter of your archenemy, but about hard work, discipline, the life of studying among geniuses, and how it feels to have clingy parents 😆. About the first one-third of the novel might be a bit boring since it revolved around the variety show FL did... more>> as a kid. But, worry not! The novel will continue to tell the life of FL and her family and childhood friends until she's 20 years old, becoming doctoral student and best actress. I particularly love her interactions with her childhood friends from genius class. So funny and heart-warming at the same time.

Overall, it's such a warm and comedic-undertone novel. Love it so much!!! ❤️ <<less

The main character is incredibly Mary Sue while also criticizing Mary Sues. I have nothing against Mary Sues but the "double standards" is rather annoying. You can also only be so humble when you're practically the best in the world (or at least nation) in everything. "I'm not a genius, I just work hard" makes no sense. You think the rest of the people in like top 100 in the world went out for drinks every day or something?

The first arc was the best and it feels like the author... more>> had written and edited that until it was well done and started publishing daily, caught up and just wrote whatever without much of a plan.

The ending was very rushed as well and a few story lines are ignored in the end. It's at least hinted that there's still villains left from the first arc and I assumed that was the reason people unreasonably hated on the main character online. Like she does something good and the response from netizens always have a bunch of people going "Oh, so you've won a bunch of awards for being the smartest person in the nation in several subjects? You're not real smart! Where's your world-changing inventions, huh?". Like, how does that even manage to become a fake discussion online? But no, turns out they're just complete morons because she wins a game show and NOW they know. SAT-scores, IQ-tests and Math Olympics be damned! She can solve Rubiks cubes with one hand! <<less

I honestly didn't expect myself to love this. It's a story about an actress who was reborn and was able to accomplish and redo the things she regretted in her previous life. Twice, while reading the book (about halfway, and towards the end, I cried because of the story. It's not a romantic story, but I surprisingly enjoyed it. I honestly look forward to more novels from this author.

Here are a few things that I have some thoughts on, but not necessarily to criticize:

  1. Spoiler

The MC, as a baby, was drinking her milk from a feeding bottle (with rubber teats) until she was over 4 y/o.

    [collapse]
I have 6 nephews and nieces and all of them were weaned from the bottle when they were over 2 years old so this was a bit too much, unless this is normal in the Chinese culture?
  2. The brain battle/competition was a bit boring to my average IQ brain. But this is a me issue, not the novel's.
  3. Some parts, especially towards the end were rushed. It's like the author just glossed over the events, but didn't really delve into the details so it was like I was reading a summary of the events. Not sure if it really was written that way, or if it was the translation.
  4. The translation (I noticed this about akk novel translations) seems to be done by Google translate. Readable, but I think I would've enjoyed the book soooo much better if the translation was better as well. Still, I enjoyed this novel so much. This was one of the few less angsty novels I've read so far. There were no deep schemes and conflicts. I think I will read this again in the future.

In the meantime, I hope there are other fully translated books from this author so I could read them next.

This is just really good. The pacing is excellent, the characters all are compelling and overall just great, the story itself is a bit meandering but in a good way. There isn't even anything I could nitpick about even if I wanted to nitpick something. This is basically a perfectly executed story, flawlessly doing everything it sets out to do without overstaying it's welcome or falling into a rut. It perfectly fulfils everything a person could expect from it. I mean it's still a mary sue reincarnation story, but it's... more>> about as good as a mary sue reincarnation story could possibly be. It's worth the read. <<less
