“Chu Yin was born into a prestigious family, blessed with both beauty and intelligence. At seventeen, she was appointed as the Crown Princess, and by twenty-four, she ascended to the position of Empress, a paragon of motherhood for the entire realm.

Her life seemed perfect.

Yet, it was at the age of twenty-four, on a day in early winter, that her life tragically froze in time.

After her death, her spirit lingered long in the imperial city. She saw her children crying out for their mother, witnessed the deep, bone-deep love of her stern husband, and observed the great changes sweeping through the kingdom of Dayue. She saw her son’s throne usurped and her family imprisoned.

Filled with indignation, Chu Yin was miraculously revived. Awakening, she found herself back at the age of twenty-one. In this life, she thought, she wanted to live longer, to achieve a truly flawless perfection in her life!

Lu Jingzhuo, the crown prince, noticed that his wife had been acting strangely, seemingly trying to seduce him at every turn. Given their usual rationality and lack of deep romantic entanglement, he wondered… perhaps she simply wanted another child?

Chu Yin: ???

A sweet and light-hearted imperial romance, focusing on joy and ease.”

I agree with earlgreyt and chande’a review. Its a slow lighthearted read with nothing really spectacular happening. Its enjoyable only because of the budding romance between the FL and ML for me.

ML and FL are the Crown Prince and Princess and they have a huge responsibility on their shoulders especially the Crown Prince who was strictly taught by his Emperor Father who expects him to be perfect. Because of this both FL and ML are people who hold themselves to a high standard. In her first life FL has a... more>> lukewarm relationship with the ML because it wasn’t a marriage of love but one she took on to get the role of Empress. She was distant with the ML. But when she died she realized that the ML actually loved her but didn’t know how to express himself. So upon rebirth, she actually removes the pretense of being a perfect wife and actually acts coquettishly to the ML and becomes more genuine.

ML is a super straight block of wood. Seriously. Due to his upbringing, he is a guy who doesn’t understand women and he’s just so strict with etiquette and everything in his life. So when FL acts differently, he thought she’s trying to seduce him to have another child.

Lol. The story revolves around the two of them and how the block of wood ML gradually learns how to be more human instead of a weird android emotionless guy. I enjoyed reading how ML becomes more open towards the FL and their relationship progress.

Could not find the extras but I did want to know what happens to the 2nd and 3rd Prince. <<less

Translation is already completed, just that not all chapters are posted here. They yet to translate the extras tho.

First off, I want to say that I enjoyed reading this novel, amazingly made me second guessing what's going to happen.

Spoiler

There's a character who was scheming to be ML's concubine, let's call her White Lotus. I genuinely thought they would pair her with the supposed big villain with how both characters are constantly being told to get married but I was wrong. Also, genuinely never thought our MC and the villain will have a low key mother and son relationship, lol.

[collapse]

All characters are flesh out, acting on their own goals even if it means contradicting other supposed antagonist in the story.

Spoiler

White Lotus on one part had to deal against ML's brother (and that brother's wife) schemes of making her mary one of their lackies to gain her adopted mother's favor. It's quite refreshing to see antagonists fighting each other instead of working together to defeat main characters.

[collapse]

Aside from that, MC's action result to consequences that are even unfavorable for her. This lead to her having to do damage control. And I love that we can see where it starts but our MC is completely confused what's happening lol.

I also low key appreciate the author mentioning period and having our MC mention to deal with it every month.

On another note, as I read I couldn't help but think that ML is low key on a spectrum with him unable to read the exact situation and having hard time expressing his emotion (could be an ancient china setting issue tho with men being raise like that). Makes it hard to believe he could survive palace struggle tho ngl.

Which speaking of, as much as it's nice read it's not that realistic. Which make sense as it's very hard to make a romantic story with a realistic ancient china setting. But sometimes I couldn't help shaking my head as to how far the author is pushing it.

Spoiler

it ended with royals being all happy together in the capital, supporting each other. It's sweet but I couldn't help lighting a candle for our MC's son having to deal with this big dilemna after their parents die, lol.

[collapse]

I also don't like the way author handle marriage with adults that has children. Admittedly there's only two cases of this, but in both cases somehow it's always one partner has a child and the other doesn't have.

Speaking of, ⚠️ there's scenes of big age gap (12 yrs) relationship ⚠️ thankfully not that pe*o but it's quite disgusting that author was entertaining the idea of

Spoiler

the aunt and her adopted daughter's suitor. Aunt is around mid to late 30s, the suitor is at mid to late 20s. The adopted daughter was around 16-18?? I'm not that sure, I feel like the suitor was supposed to be way younger to match the adopted daughter as they neve mention huge age gap but decided to increase it to make it less disgusting when pairing him up with the aunt. Still disgusting, thankfully the author did not continue.

[collapse]

The story also shows extra chapters of their daughter's lovelife. And another if scenario of the two reborn in their younger age. <<less

This was adorable! Great for fans of the marriage before romance trope. I especially loved ML's growth as a husband.

I binged it in 2 days and now I'm off to read everything else by this author I can find. :)

4 STARS! It's a slice-of-life palace romance but with:

  • no harem drama: the ML crown prince (who becomes emperor) stays true to FL from beginning to end and in fact doesn't have any interest in women outside of her lol
  • no palace schemes: although the ML's brothers had me side-eyeing in the first half, they ultimately don't scheme for the throne and end up being supportive to the main couple
  • child-raising!! The story starts with the FL bringing their twins to the main capital hehe so we get lots of cute family moments
  • decent communication between the leads: especially after they both fall in love with each other. While there are some cute misunderstandings in the beginning (mostly about the bedroom lol), I like how direct and honest the couple was after getting on the same page. Even to the point of telling the ML about the reincarnation!
Honestly if you took a modern day "cold CEO" feel-good drama and turned it into the historical equivalent, it would be THE FLAWLESS EMPRESS.

TRANSLATION

Although it says dead links on NovelUpdates, you can find the full novel translated on AsiaNovel (except for the extras). While the translations start out pretty decent, towards the middle there were quite a bit of typos in regards to pronouns/character identities and mixing up names (especially between the twins lol). I definitely get... more>> "edited MTL" vibes from the translation and the edits are hit-or-miss. Despite that, everything is quite readable and the grammar and syntax are all there so you definitely won't get a headache trying to decipher the story. It helps that the storyline itself is simple and easy-to-follow, as it basically follows the chill life of the empress Chu Yin and her quest to fix the problems from her previous life - starting with her cold husband.

GOING AGAINST CONVENTION

As mentioned in the blurb, the storyline basically follows the FL Chu Yin after her death and reincarnation back to when she entered the capital as Crown Princess after staying in Qingzhou with her children to support her husband the Crown Prince. In her first life, both she and her husband were the epitome of propriety and properness. She was truly a "flawless" crown princess and empress-to-be, supporting her husband (the ML) in every way. The ML Jingzhuo was also a perfect crown prince and emperor, working tirelessly on memorials and serving the people. It wasn't until the FL's death when the ML realized how much he actually loved her - but even then, he continued to do his duties as per the status quo until death.

Okay, rewind, now the FL is back and ready to get the romance part going since she knows the ML loved her in their previous life! She also makes subtle changes to fix the conflicts of their previous life, including: famine, war, brotherly tensions, etc. She thinks her coquettish looks are propelling the relationship when the ML - who she calls a block of wood - reveals that he actually thought she was just trying to have another child. Lol! The ML starts off super dense and apathetic to the FL's flirting and teasing but worry not, because his tone shifts in the middle of the story. He goes from "no, I won't miss my wife after a month-long separation, " to "dang, I really wish I could bring my wife on this trip during this month-long separation." How the tables have turned!!

It was really enjoyable and sweet to read about this couple start living with their hearts instead of just their heads. Because the FL gets a head start on their romance - as well as exercising to keep her body healthy - we get to see a lot of cute family and couple moments. It was adorable seeing how awkward the ML was at first with his children, and then how he becomes a caring and devoted father throughout the story (with the FL's ushering). Oh, and although the story doesn't delve into smut, we do get some steamy kissing (+more) scenes that highlight the couple's exploration with passion play. (Also they start the story with twins and then have another one in the middle. So yes lots of cute children dialogue!)

Speaking of going against convention - I was really impressed by the addition of the ML's aunt character who ended up getting a divorce and going after her own passion after her brother (the previous emperor) passed away. Following her introspection was really cool and she was definitely giving "independent woman who wants to grasp her own destiny" vibes.

NO DRAMA

The story truly lives up to the last sentence of the blurb, focusing on joy and ease. I would say the novel is composed of 80% main couple being cute and teasing one another, 10% side character thoughts, and 10% actual palace plot. Weirdly enough I usually get bored of slice-of-life historical romance Cnovels, but THE FLAWLESS EMPRESS had the perfect amount of things happening to keep me reading, whether it was a trip to the mountain, figuring out the best crops for famine relief, or even the day-to-day activities with the children like flying a kite.

In terms of side characters - I liked how effortless it was for love rival or throne rival plots to be addressed and nicked in the bud. So although normal palace plots are mentioned, the author kind of goes like, "yeah, none of that in my story. Back to the main leads being cute and figuring out how much in love they are!!" This sets up an overall light-hearted tone that makes this story easy to read.

EXTRAS

I MTL'd them on secondary sites. They're cute! Not necessary to read though as the main text finishes beautifully.

Spoiler

Extra 1: the ML reincarnates instead of the FL and gets her to fall in love with him instead!

Extra 2: cute stories about the couple's daily lives

Extra 3: side story about their daughter and future son-in-law

Extra 4: the ML and FL both get reincarnated to younger selves and ofc they plan to get married and have kids and live a beautiful life once again

[collapse]

OVERALL

This Cnovel had the perfect balance of family, slice-of-life, and romance to keep me reading. The main couple was supportive, sweet, and endearing, and the story basically centered around their happy family life. It's honestly the perfect refresher if you're in need of a break after revenge or heavy political stories.

TL;DR I recommend this if you like:

  • Total dad-type ML who starts off cold and aloof but ends up willing to do anything for his wife and kids
  • Cute FL who decides to follow her heart during this lifetime
  • Lovable family moments
  • Steamy kiss scenes
  • The aesthetic/setting of palace dramas without the actual drama part, and
  • Happily ever after!

I really really enjoyed this story. The translation was readable but the constantly wrong names were a little annoying.

I’m also really sad we couldn’t read the extra chapters, I really wanted to know more about what happens to the other characters.

It was fine as a story, enjoyable but not super outstanding.

There aren't a lot of waves. Everything passes kind of like a slow river. Slow romance, events are also pretty slow. Although the pacing could have used some tightening, it wasn't actually too boring of a read.

I liked that events changed (butterfly-effect) and the MC couldn't predict the future forever. Also some stuff would pop up to throw a curve ball

Spoiler

like the Emperor's reasoning behind trying to get concubines for the Crown Prince, which didn't happen in her previous life. However, it and his early demise was caused by some of the other subtle stuff that happened behind-the-scenes. The author handled it well, almost like karma. When the MC achieved something, like got a villain eliminated early, there would be an opposing reaction or after-effect.

[collapse]

So it wasn't just all extremely predictable.

Maybe the story was a bit too realistic, because even though it was overall an enjoyable read, it didn't really stand out a lot. I did like many of the side-characters though and really admired the way the author handled redemption for them. People who didn't like the MC much weren't always villains and eventually got their own happy ending.

But overall, it was well-written. Translation was fine. <<less

This story was quite okay, not that intriguing but still passable to pass the time. There was no top notch schemes though so don't expect too much. In fact, this story was quite lighthearted.

Spoiler

Even the villain didn't end up being a villain.

The extras weren't translated yet though so I had to search it based on the original title in chinese.

The reviewers before me wrote the brunt of it so I don't want to repeat it - nice, sentimental story about the love being born after the wedding, two children and reincarnation into younger self.

The only thing I wish to mention is how our sweet, loving ML punishes his wife ... more>>

and it happens like, a lot. Being oh so understanding about his wife's reincarnation secrets, and at the same time overbearing, paranoid patriarchical despot, whenever he's at the end of his wits with her, he solves it with a long, aggressive and/or violent s**. Of course, she accepts it (I guess at that time, it was better for a woman to pretend that his violent 'lov**ma***g' leaves her supersatisfied and obedient, than to call him crazy rap*** that he is).

Hi historical fiction enthusiasts,

I just finished this novel, and oh my, I absolutely adored it! Even though it lacked a revenge plot, the storyline was incredibly captivating. The romance was simply breathtaking, and the level of fluffiness was unparalleled. There weren't many conflicts, and overall, it was very relaxing to read. Surprisingly, I never once found myself bored or disliking it. The female lead was intelligent, and I have no complaints about her character. The male lead, while clueless at times but was far from being a terrible character.... more>> In fact, his romantic gestures were incredibly endearing. After so long, I've finally found another novel that I truly enjoy.

Thats all from me. <<less

!! A cute imperial novel!! I think it's just MTL in asianovel but its almost as good as HTL, just a few name and pronouns error but it can easily pass.

This is a cute novel, good for brainless read. We have a smart MC and cold but gradually loving ML. And while I say this is a brainless read, with fairly soft and mild imperial family characterization, the ML and MC's characterization is fitting for being from the imperial family still (aka bouts of frigid coldness and mentions of being... more>> modest and fit for the empress throne). Really cute!

No villains except for the first half actually, I wish there were more harem schemings but this is a cute family novel so!

Also might I add I ended up liking Princess Baoshan's romance line, just sad there's no extras in the sites. <<less

Easily a 10 star from me!!! This was so goooood!

This novel and “the little royal lady” sat on the same table, except this novel is better. Although different in plot but the flow of the story and how the MLs slowly fell for their wife is quite similar.

Especially If you love ancient time but doesn’t like dog blood drama, harem fight and just wants sweet romance and their daily lives together ? This is it! I love every chapter of this mainly bc of the ROMANCE ROMANCE AND ROMANCE. *Cough*... more>> good thing had to be said thrice.

Anw back to the topic, the mains are very devoted to each other especially the ML, the children’s are cute, other supporting characters story will make you feel invested especially princess baocheng. I was really happy that she found a man who truly loves her (no, he was not that young scholar) and Lu jing rui, im very satisfied with his ending. He deserves a good one

the extras aren’t yet translated so I used MTL. Anw it’s about how it’s now ML turn to go back to the past which is really good and our princess lu zhen love story. Wish we also get to see abt Lu xue but oh well, It’s still a very satisfying ending I wish there’s more <<less

I found this novel by chance and I'm very glad I did. It was a very lighthearted read. The romance between the FL and ML was very sweet and the pacing was perfect. The FL's lack of finesse and trying to force things based off her knowledge of the future in the beginning was kind of annoying, but she mellows out pretty quickly.

Overall, really great read. It has moments that'll have you blushing and giggling to yourself as you read.

The translation is also pretty good. There's a bit of confusion... more>> with the names sometimes and other slight mistakes, but nothing that really disturbs your reading flow. <<less

It’s definitely not an accurate depiction but it’s so sweet. It’s a great novel filled with sweetness. There are no villains and the ML is perfect. The chemistry with the FL is also burning through. More than a romance novel it seems to be a story of how the ML learn to feel emotion and reciprocate. Loved every page of this novel. There are no great dramas and it’s not very deep but it’s a well worth romance novel.
