The line between good and evil was drawn long ago. Li Xun is about to burn it down.

Born into power and privilege as the heir of the noble Prince Fu, Li Xun should have lived a life of ease. Instead, thanks to his elders’ reckless obsession with immortality, he was thrust headfirst into a nightmare—one where right and wrong blur, and survival depends on navigating the razor-thin line between both.

Living in the cracks, extremely cautious and fearful, this eight-year-old’s heart is no longer innocent. While enduring threats from all sides, he must also bear the rules of a life-and-death game!

Trapped in an endless spiral of nightmares and the harshest of trials, Li Xun’s journey is no fairytale. It’s a brutal test of will, wit, and strength.

But maybe—just maybe—he’ll find a way to turn the game on its head. To carve his own path between righteousness and evil. To uncover the hidden truth behind the so-called righteous path… and the forbidden path to immortality that lies beneath it.

The world wants him to choose a side. He’ll choose his own.

I'm the translator, and I have to say—this has officially become one of my all-time favorite web novels, right up there with Reverend Insanity. And trust me, I've read my fair share over the years, so that's really saying something.

From the very beginning, it had me completely hooked, and it never let go until the final chapter.

What really makes this story stand out is the main character. He's young, but way more mature for his age— smart, patient, and not your usual bland "good guy" type. In fact, he's a... more>> hypocrite on the surface and a s*umbag at heart. He'll beg for his life, stab his master in the back to survive, say one thing and mean another, and act all friendly while secretly plotting your downfall. But at the same time, he's insanely driven. Like, spend seven years climbing a mountain alone just to reach his goal kind of driven. He'll throw away his pride, let people walk all over him if that's what it takes.

He does some truly horrific sh*t you can't possibly justify, but it never feels cheap or edgy for the sake of it.

He's nothing like those cartoonish villains in try-hard webnovels where the whole point is to make the MC look cold and badass... it's just cringe.

The side characters—good or bad—all had that fake moral high ground vibe. Everyone spoke in

cryptic lines, playing 4D chess with each other.

They really really feel real – whether it's the big names like the Three Great Wanderers, Shui Die Lan, and Qingyin, or the smaller ones like Ling Ji, Dan Zhi, and Qi Bi. They all add depth and color to the story, with clear motives and relationships. There aren't any dumb old monster-type villains — everyone's sharp and out for their own gain. The darker worldview fits perfectly with a survival-of-the-fittest, jungle-law vibe.

The plot is tight and everything ties together smoothly — no filler, just solid progression.

The main character's power level isn't over-the-top. Even when he's punching above his weight, it stays within a believable range.

The details are spot-on. The romance is well set up and brings a fresh take on emotional connections. Plus, there are some surprisingly deep life lessons sprinkled throughout.

The overall tone is straight-up dark. The whole book is soaked in danger and tension — everywhere you look, it's full of twisted human nature and cold, cruel smirks. One scheme follows another, nonstop. Sure, there are a few lighter moments here and there, but they're fleeting. Before you know it, you're right back in the shadows, like you're stuck in some dark, suffocating cave — the kind of oppressive vibe that makes it hard to even breathe.

If you liked Reverend Insanity, you definitely shouldn't miss this. And if you're into the xianxia genre at all, this one's a must-read. <<less
