A wonderful novel filled with mystery, comedy, a hint of tragedy but filled to the brim with twists and turns.

Brief synopsis:

Spoiler

An odd girl is found covered in blood at a mu*der scene and brought to custody only for the police team to find out she is their new forensic scientist. The girl tries hard to mask her autism to not get fired from her job but fails miserably. Then starts a thrilling novel of how our genius forensic scientist goes and solves horrendous mu*ders one after another.

[collapse]

This really isn't a lighthearted novel. It brings up serious issues like mental illness, child ab*se and abandonment and touches upon the cruelty of man. However, there is something sweet about this novel brought by our lovely MC. Brilliant but a cute in a silly way, our MC and people around her brings warmth to the story. ML is kind and sweet as well.

All characters in this novel are complex and well written and the plot, especially each mu*der, was intriguing.

Definitely recommend. <<less

For most of the novel, I felt like it was decent. A solid higher than 4 but not at 5. But closer to 5 in the end (and bumping it up b/c you rarely get such a solidly put together, if you ignore some elements of scientific inaccuracy, female lead novel without anyone being OP or mary-sue ish) as it is extremely bittersweet- somehow everything builds and ends up sliding away, like building a sandcastle near the wave lines. As other reviewers mentioned- there's a lot of really important themes... more>> that present themselves through the forensics setting (which is NOT the focus. This isn't a true crime-solving novel in the normal sense- crime is a plot driver and I think the context for a lot of exploration and relationship development). I felt like everything was wrapped up well in the end though

Spoiler

It's HE for the MC/ML to an extent but extremely bittersweet when you think about everyone else. Anyone who isn't skimming will probably start feeling that there's lingering problems and a sense of discomfort- like a hanging sword- and while this is pretty much resolved by the end, it's not a fairytale ending.

[collapse]

Giving 5 stars by the end because at no point did I feel bored (even if I wasn't hooked to the point of skimming chapters) and liked how we got to know the characters, as well as how they and their relationships grew and changed. <<less

Pretty much average read in both the mystery and romance.

Was there horror? Nah. And so are the butterflies in romance and thrill in mystery.

It's not that the events/cases are uninteresting nor was the pairing not cute. Maybe it's the narrative? The way it is written that just failed to pull me into the story. Considering how much 'emotions' became a topic and are disected throughout the novel, it ironically failed to make it across to me. Consequently, so does the atmosphere.

Whole time, what only drove me to read was curiosity... more>> of the stories behind the cases and most of all I've been waiting for the big reveal behind the Shen parents' demise. But thrill, suspense, butterflies? Nah.

More importantly not all cases were seamlessly closed. I mean, as realistic it is, it was frustrating if you're like me who likes seamless closures. <<less

Started out fairly interesting then gradually got worse.

MC & ML weren't that likable to begin with but then become becons of hypocrisy.

Spoiler

Dropped when a r*pe case was won by the clearly guilty rich boy. Then afterwards, once vigilante justice was given, the MCs pretty much just washed themselves of any dirt and became sticklers to the rules even when the rules were clearly bent by those in power.

They knew the righteous defendant was gonna end up in a bad place--confined in a mental hospital for life and targeted by the bastard rich family. Yet they did little to nothing to help the other side. Why? Law is the law pretty much, even when it is so backwards.

[collapse]

Could not stand anymore how much they preach about justice when they just let the corrupt be. Pretty much s*aves to the system.

Not helping that it seems author was bent on making the bad good and the good bad. Even if it was somewhat realistic, was not a good read.

Not gonna stick around for main characters that were pretty much double standards.

Was gonna give 1 star but decided to put another one up due to how fairly real it was, even if it was a terrible read in overall. But yeah, could be better, like the MCs making efforts to also judge and change the flawed judicial system instead of strictly following it and letting the good ones be the ones being punished.

Really left a sour taste when they speak so much about being on Justice's side but then just shrugged their shoulders even when the evidence was obviously fabricated and the good ones were loosing. All it told me was the MCs are unreliable and full of gas. <<less

It's okay to kill time.

This isn't one of those "guess the killer yourself" kinda thing, they like to add details and the killer around the reveal.

I do like how this Chinese novel portrays autism. The second one I've read where they haven't called it a disease or talked about curing it (I have read many frustrating ones.)

... more>> Our MC is highly functioning but still gives insight to what it's like.

That being said, it's not super interesting. You don't get a lot of interesting characters or crimes, but it isn't bad per se. <<less
