The Gentle Man Next Door is a Rabbit

Xu Mu was a hardcore otaku, who one night died suddenly from playing games late into the night, only to open his eyes and find himself alive again.

A noisy black ball surrounded him, claiming he had entered into some novel as a cannon fodder extra.

Xu Mu firmly believed he was experiencing hallucinations, waving his hand to dismiss the black ball.

With a “sizzle,” after a few seconds, the black ball disappeared.

Sure enough, it was just a hallucination, and he went back to sleep satisfied.

Once, while out, Xu Mu encountered an injured rabbit on the road.

He intended to bandage the rabbit’s wound, but the rabbit kept struggling, refusing to cooperate.

“Be good, I’ll take you back to bandage your wound.”

The rabbit stopped struggling.

Xu Mu: How fierce, but quite spiritual.

After bandaging the rabbit’s wound, it ran off without looking back.

Xu Mu felt regretful, his wish of raising a rabbit shattered.

His life as a shut-in continued, until one day, the doorbell rang.

A fair and gentle man stood at the door, offering cookies and speaking softly, “Hello, I’m your new neighbor who recently moved in…”

Xu Mu didn’t catch the rest of the words, his attention entirely on the box of cookies.

So hungry.

The man smiled gently, “Go ahead, eat.”

Xu Mu wolfed down the cookies, only realizing he behaved inappropriately afterward. He looked at his neighbor sheepishly.

The man didn’t say anything, his gaze still soft and accepting.

Later, Xu Mu discovered that his neighbor, who frequently visited, was an excellent cook. He often received delicious food, juices, and occasionally, dinner invitations.

From initially feeling anxious and guilty, Xu Mu gradually felt at ease, all within a few short months.

Xu Mu pondered that it wasn’t right to keep eating without giving back, so he handed his bank card to his neighbor.

The man slowly widened his eyes, “What… do you mean?” His face started to flush slightly, a hint of crimson on his skin.

Xu Mu focused on his game, hastily handing over the card, “Take it.”

—My food expenses are all covered in there, thank you for your hard work.

Recently, the man’s frequency of sending delicious food had increased, and he even accompanied Xu Mu to play games every day, sometimes even helping him tidy up the house.

Xu Mu felt that something was amiss, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.

Who said anything about fluff!?

Yeah. The story is disgustingly cute and is absolutely teeth-rotting but.. Primarily.. This couple, they're really quite kinky. This novel has more s*xual tension than 90% of whatever else you may have read.. Seriously.

This one is truly a completely different flavor from usual danmei.

... more>> PLOT:

This story goes by one of our favorite sweet misunderstandings trope

where the misunderstandings pile up and the reveal is meant to be satisfying! Most of what is to be misunderstood is in the summary itself so if this isn't your cup of tea, don't read ah

don't read teacher Jiecai's works either! The pacing is quite good and the flow is quite realistic, it's not overdone anywhere and almost every aspect that needs to be considered has been considered

even our black ball system comes back so no worries if you're not a fan of loose ends or plot holes

CHARACTERS:

Both our Xu Mu and Bai Nian have very distinct and realistic personalities that clearly morph and grow as their relationship changes, it's very well written and the engagement is satisfying and delightful enough to love them even after the books finished, I won't forget these two sweet hearts. Yeye, Qi Xin and Karl included ofc

However if I was to point out something, both Xu Mu and Bai Nian share a similar personality trait that may be hard for many to understand, especially if both you and your partner

aren't intuitive introverts. The tendency to keep silent and the rate of communication increasing only with time, meaning even if they have misunderstandings or doubts, they are the type of people to assume rather than clear it out. I understand because my partner and I are the same, now we would clear it our of course but if I remember correctly it took us almost 2 years just to get into that open and heart-to-heart discussion state, despite that, we still assume and only clear things out when it simmers to a certain point. If you aren't a fan of realistic portrayals to a different character archetype than what you're usually used to in danmei, this story isn't for you.

ROMANCE:

Once again, the misunderstandings are very realistic based on the personalities of our characters. Xu Mu isn't interested in the outside world much and is quite dense but sensitive, we as omniscient third party viewers have a god's viewpoint and can easily point fingers but I know for sure that if I saw a person change into a sloth in front of me I'd foam in the mouth probably. It's also mentioned multiple times that the culture of expressing and showing mimicry is reserved and rather conservative, so it's not uncommon for Xu Mu not to notice anything for so long. Other misunderstandings stem from Bai Nian's lack of communication and just generally it's nothing painful. There weren't time skips and each day was shown clearly as it's a slice-of-life so it may feel slow and draggy but it's quite normal for a misunderstanding to last that long. Either way the romance was filled with heat and the s*xual tension was off the roof. This couple is really kinky.

But coming to that

If I were to nitpick a few things:

    • It's true the misunderstanding did drag for a little too long, but this is a sense of feeling that comes due to expectations, the story is written in a way wherein it seems like the reveal is going to take place but then you're doused with cold water. Not a good feeling right? However know that professional authors instinctively 'know' when to reveal and the hesitation portrayed was itchingly perfect. Again, you need patience. However, I do wish the fact that Xu Mu transmigrated was revealed, though later when the story was closing up, it didn't seem necessary, I do feel it would give closure to a lot of his actions and garner him support from Bai Nian. That's my only concern
As for this gem of a novel I came across. I love rabbits and I love snakes, I also really love foxes.

Highly recommend. Really should try it out <<less

I’ve never wanted a pet but this story made me want to go out and buy a rabbit. Gah. It’s so cute.

It’s hilarious that the MC has no idea he’s been transported to an orc world and thinks the cute bunny that appears in his apartment is just a normal pet bunny, and not his cute neighbour in his animal form. I love that the ML goes from thinking my neighbour is a perv to oh he’s really a fan of fluffy creatures to he’s in love with ME.

The ML... more>> is super cute. He’s shy, gentle and doting and he tries his best to confront his insecurities once he’s determined to be with the MC. His pseudo son is also adorable and I love that he was calling the MC “dad” before the couple gets together.

The story is a feel-good slice of life romance between two lonely people and it’s great. <<less

I love this novel. From chapter 1, I knew I had to immediately binge read this through mtl. It was so heartwarming seeing some of the character’s interactions with one another. A very nice read. Recommend 100%!!!

It’s a very warm and light hearted story. Though one chapter from extra seems a little concerning, but otherwise very nice. Not too much drama which I especially appreciate as I dislike too many misunderstandings, miscommunication, etc. Not a big fan of those genres which is why I really like this novel.

This is so adorable.

Honestly I find the plot of MC not realising that they are all demi-human after so long ridiculous, but this novel is essentially about him constantly fanboying over the ML's rabbit form so I can close my eyes on that.

MC's love for the rabbit to non-pet owners might seem suggestive, but as a pet-owner myself, it's very normal behaviour to show excessive love to your pets plus, the MC didn't know humans can turn into animals. The transition of the ML assuming MC's a pe*vert to thinking... more>> MC actually loves him romantically is hilarious. MC just really wanted a pet rabbit.

Anyway, the ML is adorable, the child is adorable. Everyone is so adorable. <<less

Dragged on misunderstanding and misscommunicatoon, it's just frustrating after so long, if it's just short term maybe it's ok. But its just annoying now, not funny nor sweet. Uke misunderstand all seme's action and has little communication, didn't tell this or that but expect seme to already know everything. Seme is too easily pushed around, idk, not my cup of tea. Everything they did isn't in the same frequency & I can't see any chemistry.
Spoiler

More than half chs and seme still think uke married & has ex wife, the obvious weirdness about mimicry never explained.

I tried just skim reading but it irk me so much I drop it, I can't stand the progression anymore.

Actually think it’s 3, 5 stars. I think the misunderstanding goes on for way too long ... more>>
Spoiler

the MC finally figures it out somewhere in the 30-ish chapters, which means he doesn’t know, care or is suspicious off anything until then. And even after he knows, the misunderstanding between him and the ML never really gets cleared up.

[collapse]

It was fun to read, but I feel like a lot of things were just glossed over and could have had some more attention. Although something’s were shocking/worrying to the MC, he got over them rather easily without any accepting process. <<less

Note: I've read the full story but skipped some of the extras. I would rate it a 3.5 just because I'm not a fan of slice of life and this wasn't advertised as such but became exactly that. It's good that it was relatively short though, otherwise I wouldn't have finished it.

The early premise of the story was nice, it started out great. The interactions between the ML and MC were fluffy and cute, the relationship build up was there, and there was some anticipation and excitment. After a while... more>> though, it becomes focused on the day to day and not much happened to keep interest. As I mentioned, slice of life is not really something I enjoy so it got a bit boring for me.

The MC and ML both have things going on in their lives, they're good to the child too, but the child seems to play less and less of a role as the story progresses.

I think the animal form interactions were sweet and the couple are supportive of each other. This is also one of the few couples where I'm fully on board with them not having kids.

I can see why it took MC so long to realise the situation of the world, he didn't interact with much of the world in the first place and he really thought he had just gone to the future, it wasn't something that would occur to him (given his characterisation) that the animals were actually humans, he just sometimes felt that something was wrong, but couldn't pin point what. With that said, there were several good set ups and opportunities for fleshing out the world but they weren't really realised. This also holds true for some characters, many seem to just dissapear once they did their part in aiding MC and ML's relationship.

The main side couple in particular (System x original ML) had a great premise and interest set up but not much was done with it, it got relegated to one extra and that was also not handled well at all (although to be fair the system was just generally annoying from the begining but because we didn't get to see much of it, it could have been taken in a different direction, the foundation was there). I felt sorry for the original ML to be honest, he clearly has problems but it could have been solved in this timeline but he still got the same ending (though don't think he's a good person but I still felt bad).

Overall I liked the story until they got together, but as it went on it became a bit mundane and tedious. <<less

Suspend all logic—it’s just a really cute and fluffy novel. Sped through it because it’s mostly fluff and entertainment. The school/work and gaming parts were a bit more dry in comparison—acted mostly as a foil for setting up things for me, I still didn’t really grasp any school/work side character names.

The initial misunderstanding part did go on a bit long but it was still funny and entertaining, just on the verge of still being plausible. Made me really feel like cuddling a fluffy rabbit myself, lol. Generally, the two of... more>> them together in their animal forms were just precious and adorable.

The ‘age gap’ was kind of touched upon (technically MC’s real age was 27 vs. ML’s 32, but forgotten for most part), but not really addressed. They both kind of lapse into childish shyness at times which is a bit odd, but if you close an eye, still kind of works and is endearing enough (inexperience & stunted childhood? Eh.).

The ‘side couple’ was funny enough, good amount of time spent, and satisfactory ending.

I wish

Spoiler

MC fessed up about his transmigration to ML (personal preference) ; he didn’t even try, seems like a pretty big secret to keep from your only lover & family.

[collapse]

and the smut could just be explicit! My imagination struggles to fill in the blanks of MC’s persistent wet fingers whenever they ‘kiss’. LOL. How? Why? When during??

Anyway. Not sure if I’ll re-read but it was good (but not great) ! <<less

I.. was... hmm... well, I have wrote 6 long paragraph but my college application for social work (kind of Mandatory program) suddenly opened and I need to check in before the quota's full.

if you Indonesia, you must know KKN

Yeah. It's gone. I don't remember what did I write. I think it's mainly about agreeing to other comment how Ye Yes got forgotten after main couple got together, how the villain cleanly solved (not even drama), how about this is a "world of two" kind novel.

Also, if you the type t... more>> search for mtl in Chinese website. Don't give up. I only find the extra till 89 after 6 attempt, not including p*rn ads I need to close, etc.

I actually don't mind the misunderstanding to me it's not that frustrating compared to a lot of misunderstanding that feels frustrating to the point that when even when they resolve it another misunderstanding comes along. So compared to that this one has a more reasonable reason behind it.

If anything I'm more peeved that the side couple is just done and dusted. It ended in a rather open ended as to if this relationship is legit or just one-sided.

Over all I think this story is rather smooth sailing with the misunderstanding... more>> keeping things interesting but I guess depending on the reader it could be frustrating, but to me it doesn't feel that way as I had explained above. So just a solid 4 is good enough due to it being just a cozy story nothing really in depth just cozy lol.

Spoiler

There's someone said that MC should have told ML his transmigration identity is not a big issue. Cause first of all it could potentially violate an unknown rule as information like this could become repercussions. Second MC doesn't care to due to his personality as he more focused on the now than the past. So the issue of being a transmigration as a secret is not betraying ML because it wasn't that relevant and also they already bonded so something like keeping a secret won't break their relationship

Pros:

    • If you're looking a light read, this is it. It's a smooth sailing, easy going kind of story.
    • There's a kid which makes the interactions kinda cute (the kid is the ML's nephew and MC helps take care of him)
Cons:

    • The misunderstandings took too long to resolve that at some points, I was just dragging myself to read just so I can know what happens during the confrontations or resolution of these misunderstandings
    • Spoiler 1st misunderstanding is that MC never realized until around chapter 30 that he's in an orc world and that ML is actually the rabbit he was smothering with affection.
    • Spoiler 2nd misunderstanding is when MC gave ML a bank card supposedly as thanks for always giving him food. At that time, MC also said he 'liked' ML and ML assumed it was MC confessing so he agreed to be lovers. It wasn't until chpter 50-55 that MC and ML found out that they had this miscommunication so this issue caused a few sub-misunderstandings
    • The tension build up to their intimate scenes were good but it leaves you hanging because there really isn't any description going on, the scenes were skipped and it's just kinda a bummer because the anticipation and s*xual tension was really build up so I was anticipating it
Overall:

    • It's an alright read but not really particularly interesting for me. The cons outweigh the pros as well so for now, I'm not continuing reading this
