This was so unexpectedly good. I really didn’t know why I was reading until I was s**ked in and had to force myself to pause for another day.

It had some pronoun and slight translation errors but overall great job.

I’m amazed that I was so entertained in a novel that didn’t have romance (there’s slight romantic-subplot) I do think though, if this was a modern story, there could have been love between the MC and the husband. He was a W for a historical novel, truly a great man.

I would like... more>> to read about the MCs new life, the Lin family in the extras, maybe an extra where Jia Min dies and the husband marries MC as a second wife.

Anyhow, it’s a little convoluted to get into but once you’re into it, you won’t be able to put this story down. And you don’t need to know the story (dream of the red chamber?) that the world is based off of. <<less

All tell no show. The dialogues are few in every chapter. The story is written in a narration pov. And most of all, the plot revolves around the main wife's family and conspiracies. In 5 chapters the description or plot involving FL was roughly 2 paras.

FL is definitely not the focus. There is no depth to the interactions between FL and her husband or anyone. FL in a true sense as she describes in a background board.

The main lead could very much be the Old lady. The story would have... more>> been far more interesting then. The author tries to touch here and there and losing everything. Many of the characters and plot points are extremely predictable or boring.

Most of all, the main thing that loses points, is the dialogues or more so 'lack of'. The interactions are told roughly without giving estimate of what was spoken. Seriously... Even if this type of predictable plot is my cup of tea, I couldn't stomach it cause it felt anticlimactic without any sense of thrill and ritual.

All the characters have roughly grey personality or correct realistic personality you can say after all, it's ancient time.

THE HUSBAND/ML

Spoiler

The ML/ husband doesn't fall for the FL (concubine) but is extremely respectable, cunning and well versed with all issues. Frankly in those times, he can be considered a golden husband since he didn't take a concubine after not having a son for 10 years. He is considered a loyal and gentle husband, who not only takes care of external affairs but also helps in internal affairs. In ancient times, a husband to worry about his wife's mental health is the first. And also to be serious about the education of his children... Lol! I found it so funny

[collapse]

The Main wife

Spoiler

She is amazing in her own right, she can be said lucky and unlucky both at the same time and she understands it. And most of all, she has her own bottom line, she is charismatic and makes decisions for her own. She is a good pair with her husband. If she were born in modern times, she would be successful. After reading the background and everything about her (which is more interesting and more described than the FL) I respect her even more.

[collapse]

The Mei concubine

Spoiler

FL described her well, a cannon fodder personality. It's only because the Lin family doesn't have schemes that she is able to survive. Or else the first person to die would be her and she wouldn't even know who killed her. The main reason all four of them let her go is cause her schemes and everything is transparent. In fact she could be the one among all who has the clearest personality and reasons for doing shit. But there is particularly no need for it since no one is competing. Most of the drama is through her initially. But manageable. Frankly for some reason I worry about this antagonist/ colleague of FL. Lol!! Just lie down Mei, no one really cares about the things for which you scheme

[collapse]

The FL

Spoiler

Salted fish, takes everything as though she is working in a cooperate office. Extremely glutinous, since she has been through apocalypse. Loves her children, smart, observant, likes to take her fate in own hands, learns whatever skills she can, knows her own place, doesn't cause trouble to others, likes to act like a turtle.

If I won't search for trouble, trouble won't come to me!

Most of all, has no intention to fall in love, she just wants to live like a salted fish and live life peacefully. Frankly I don't have any problem with level headed and clear headed FL, but the author doesn't give her any face value. The plot doesn't involve her at all!!!! The author conveniently forgets about her for many chapters. It would have been okay if the plot was something incredible or mysterious or conspiracies, but plot is meh! With predictable. I would rather know more about the FL - her interactions with her husband/ main wife/ grandma / children. Day to day slice of life would also be fine. But no!! Just because she is a salted fish doesn't mean her daily life can't be given more scenes. The author really...

To be a background character in your own story is funny

The Grandma

Spoiler

Had dreams of past life where her granddaughter is ab*sed and Jia family swallows her own family property. An iron Fist lady, didn't show any dissatisfaction in first life towards main wife but later regretted it, not having a son. She died in that life, now she wants to change it. She put maids as a form of bodyguard, extremely cautious. Is on guard against Main wife's family but not her, actually respects the main wife, in fact if it weren't for the past life, she even liked the main wife. Or else in feudal society, where would a mother allow her son to not have concubines inspite of not having a grandson. If the Jia family didn't go too far in past life she really wouldn't have changed anything and allowed her son not to take concubines. She told the concubines that she'll treat them better if they give her a grandson. She does treat them better but never such that they forget their own place.

Ah!! Such sad feudal society. This is clearly reflected on how she raised her son - The husband (I really can't call him ML, since the relationship inspite of being respectful on the surface is a complete transaction acc to FL and she never let's us forget it. After all the husband is extremely charming so I find it such a pity) Her son is clear about his good relationship with wife, so he keeps both FL and Mei concubine at arms length, respectful but not that loving!

[collapse]

Anyway, it's okay but the author's description or narration style is quite boring or you can say not my cup of tea. So dropping it! <<less

Ehmm... quite different from other novel with this genre..

1. FL accept reality that she live in ancient times where male can has wife and concubine

2. FL husband not be the one that devoted for FL only but they has good relationship as subordinate and boss, mentor, and yes.. I think finally someone can describe what good marriage at that time realistically

... more>> 3. Not much scheming but a lot slice of life element here

And other things is.. FL yes has superpower but not that overly OP but she is a very sensible person and with her experience at 2 others world before make her point of view quite interesting

Though I'm feel bored at chpt 44 and jump to the end.. hehee.. so actually this is like 3.8 <<less

It's a great story to read to relax. It's not long, not annoying, not bloody. Not much love, but too much peace. After those messy novels about wives and concubines infighting, it was a pleasant surprise. An intelligent female lead is not a lovebrain.

Definitely for re-reading.

It’s the ideal life of a realistic concubine? The story was quite interesting. I liked how the FL is rational from beginning to the end. There is no romance. FL never loved the ML and always perceived her husband as a boss. Liked that perspective a lot. It’s the best life she could achieve with her status. ML is not bad but not great either.

I liked that there wasn't a façade of romance in this. It's a historical, female centered story. It's hardly about love.

The FL is always clear about her standing and, although there is a husband, I wouldn't call him a ML. He was family for the protagonist and I think it was beautiful and fitting for their relationship.

Because it covered several generations, there isn't as much depth on the children or grandchildren as I would've liked. But I did love the female characters from the Lin family.

Spoiler

Grandmother Lin was a savage, loved that she lived longer for her family, yes, but mainly to see the death of Grandmother Jia, absolute queen of spite

[collapse]

The FL is somewhat plain, ngl kind of boring too, but I still enjoyed her subplots.

Spoiler

There was though, that unresolved plot about the celestial being, Jing Huan or whatever, there was never an explanation as to why she was obsessed with Jia Baoyu's jade and Lin Dayu's death. They just killed off the "villain mastermind" and moved on.

Spoiler

Felt really sad about Yingyu when she found the truth, but I don't really pity her, because as she said; she lacked in some areas regarding her sisters but, was favored in comparison to others in her position.

[collapse]

The TL was quite decent, the site was neat and easy to understand. 4.5/5

Spoiler

Would've loved to read another book about her next life, it sounded very exciting and interesting.

I liked it. The tl itself is not high quality but it's not too bad. The ending was fine to me kust would've been better if there was an extra of the MC too not just the 2 we have.

For the plot, there's not a lot of upheaval or drama so if you like high stake you won't really enjoy this. Over all it might be something people who read Dream of the red chamber would enjoy a lot more than those of us who haven't. I liked the fact... more>> that MC didn't really change over the course of her life and that the novel never strayed into romo territory. <<less

Summary: Yun Shuyao was on her third life. In her first life as an average office drone, she was hit by a car, picked up a magic coin and was transmigrated in the middle of an apocalypse. After years of fighting and struggling in the apocalypse, she transmigrates into ancient China, specifically the Qing Dynasty. Soon after transmigrating, she faces a dilemna in the face of her new father's unjust imprisonment. While her family desperately tries to find a solution, she faces a choice between marrying into as a... more>> concubine or letting her family face ruin. Surprisingly, she discovers that her new husband happens to be the father of the famous Lin Daiyu from Dream of the Red Chamber. Yun Shuyao's goal is only to be an observer to this tragedy, but her very presence changes everything.

Translation: Good. There are a few typos and misnamed characters but they don't impact the reading experience. On the other hand, it's not clear if this is due to the translator or author but some of the transitions are very sudden and jarring.

Characters:

MC: Yun Shuyao is very... normal yet also very abnormal. On one hand, she retains her morals, doesn't foolishly fall in love or self-importantly aim to change things, but on the other hand, she is distant from most things in life. When she's first married, she treats it like a job which mostly doesn't change. While she finds her husband appealing and likes him well enough, she never falls in love with him. She doesn't fight for favor or power with the main wife or the other concubine. She wasn't even planning on having children really but ended up having twins early on. Her greatest emotional investment is her children but even then, she's still very aloof. At one point in the novel, the other concubine tells her that she could never stand how aloof MC is and MC is surprised that that's what people think of her. As the story goes on, more and more people compare her to a daoist and even her children worry that she's suddenly going to renounce the material world. In this way, it's kind of boring because nothing really fazes MC.

Old Lady Lin/Xie Shi: The mother of Lin Ruhai and matriarch of the Lin family. If there is a secondary character of significant importance, it would be her. She could almost be the deuterogonist considering that she's usually the one actually making changes. She was basically bestowed with a dream of the plot of Dream of the Red Chamber focusing on her own granddaughter, Lin Daiyu, who is a tragic character. In the original, the Lin family is wiped out. Lin Ruhui, her son and Lin Daiyu's father, had never taken concubine's despite he and his wife, Jia Min, being childless for years. When Old Lady Lin died, the only children he had were Lin Daiyu and a short-lived illegitimate son born to his maidservant. Shortly after, the illegitimate son died, followed by the main wife, Jia Min. In this situation, Lin Ruhui had no choice but to send Lin Daiyu to her mother's family, the Jia family, for the sake of her reputation. In the Jia family, the intelligent but gently Lin Daiyu was mistreated and her male cousin of a similar age, Jia Baoyu, was consistently inappropriate with her. When her father died, the Jia family swallowed up the entire wealth of the Lin family while cruelly mistreating Lin Daiyu and spreading rumors about her love with her cousin to ruin her reputation. In the end, however, her cousin married another woman and the sorrow and shame caused Lin Daiyu to cry herself to death. Old Lady Lin was so enraged by this dream that she decided to guard against the Jia family and make sure her son had a reliable male heir. Enter MC who hits the jackpot with male-female twins in the first year of her marriage. Perhaps one of the funniest things was the sheer spite and hatred Old Lady Lin had for Old Lady Jia.

Other Characters: There's a lot and most of them are quite rational beings. The "bad guys" aren't even qualified to be antagonists.

PLOT:

Unsurprising. Very predictable. Not bad but nothing new. The greatest weakness of the plot, besides the lack of innovation, is that there were some strange plotholes.

Spoiler

Partway through, it's revealed that there is someone purposely manipulating events in order to do.... something? They want everyone to follow the plot of Dream of the Red Chamber, including the bad ending of the Lin family. They're not particularly effective and MC just keeps spoiling their plans by existing or by feeding their magic tools to her magic coin/mirror. After a certain point, there really isn't a chance of them winning and they just disappear from the novel. I still don't know why they were there or what they were trying to achieve. Perhaps this is because I don't know enough about Dream of the Red Chamber? Or perhaps because I haven't read the final extra? I just don't remember the novel explaining why these people wanted the the plot of Dream of the Red Chamber to come true.
