God is creating a legend!!!! We need a little faith to give people a backbone, and then add some man-eating demons to get everyone excited! Add some love… and a dash of hatred… rebellion and impulsiveness. Finally, throw in a familiar protagonist with a slightly dark personality, otherwise, it won’t be interesting. Oops… went a bit overboard!

So, in a small alley on the streets of London, Sherlock slowly emerges from the shadows, holding a head in his hand. Blood drips from his spine, tick-tock, tick-tock. Excellent, the killer has been dealt with. The next challenge is to prove that the killer is indeed the killer.

================================================================

God is cooking up a legend!!!

First, a pinch of faith — something for people to believe in, a backbone to steady the chaos.

Now toss in some man-eating demons — let the masses tear each other apart!

Add a dash of love… a splash of hate… a rebellious nature, and a good dose of reckless impulse.

And finally — drop in a familiar protagonist.

Make him a little dark, just a touch — otherwise, what’s the fun?

…Damn. Too much.

Somewhere in a narrow alley off the streets of London, Sherlock stepped from the shadows, dragging a severed head behind him. Blood dripped steadily down the spine and spattered the ground. Drip. Drip.

Perfect. The mu*derer has been dealt with.

Now comes the real problem:

Proving the mu*derer was the mu*derer.

It's a very dull read. Translation is good, but the story itself leaves a ton to desire. I really liked the setting, but in 20 chapters it just left me more and more bored rather than more and more interested. I'd say 20 chapters is a good enough amount to feel out what kind of novel this is and what to expect down the road. I bet some people will claim it's not enough, but if you read in a focused manner for well over an hour, the author should've... more>> gotten you interested already. It's not a movie that can be lazy watched after losing interest.

I mean, the whole detective, demons from hell, mu*der and the steampunk like setting with steam armors and so on is nice, but it doesn't matter how awesome the setting is if the author can't properly utilize it. It feels like he's going too much for gore and "shock value" rather than setting the mood and immersing the readers. It's like a scary movie that goes for jump scares all the time, if you've seen a fair bit of such things before and it's overused, the reader won't feel much of anything. Very gory scenes, mu*ders and elaborate descriptions of said things and the creatures of hell but the plot itself leaves much to be desired, it just doesn't grasp my attention with the way it's written. It ends up feeling forced, as if the author isn't sure how to spin the story itself so he ramps up on easy descriptions, trying to force feed the readers on how "dreary", "scary" and "dark" the world is. But when everyone acts depressed, dark and mysterious without much build up, the story appears one-dimensional. The important details are squeezed out to make room for what is simply glorified filler.

I also feel like it's almost impossible to relate the characters on any level. I like dark novels and protagonists that are evil or crazy, but this guy is a bit too weird and we don't get to understand his thoughts enough to care about him.

Overall, it gives me the impression of someone trying too hard to make the character soulless and inhuman. I feel like readers should never have to guess what goes on in the head of the protagonist or who they are, where they came from and so on, because it becomes very hard to care about a protagonist that, for all intents and purposes, appears to be a side character in his own novel. <<less

I must say, this is almost like LotM, but not really; only the world-building is similar. It seems closer to LotM 2, if anything. I'll let the reader decide for themselves. I think it reads a little bit like a Korean novel also; but it is good.

Worldbuilding - It's interesting and exactly what I wanted from it. Its dark, fantastical, and what I would expect if magic was in a society; used for nothing but violence and personal gain. Its on the backburner for most of the story, unlike LotM.

Characters... more>> - They are kind of one-dimensional, not that its bad, I'd say this is more of a power fantasy anyway, so I am glad by the lack of character arcs.

Plot - I think the author is kinda aware that they don't know how to write a mystery, or maybe they didn't put a lot of thought into this mini arc since it's the beginning and nothing serious. I would say that it isn't a mystery per say, but rather a confused protagonist who has no idea what is happening and is trying to navigate the system. The story does not highlight the mystery of who did what, when, why, and where. The translation is good and the chapters are short. There are paragraphs in between sentences, which I like a lot more than a bunch of small sentences, which seem to be the norm.

Overall, I am not sure what to think about this story; it doesn't do anything bad or great, it is average; however, I would say doing the average is special since there are a million ways to mess it up. 5 stars since it is what it says on the tin (except the author noticed they cant write a mystery so they opted out). <<less

The start was phenomenal, but then it turned out, it was a fake protagonist... and the real protogist was the one who intruded onto the scene, Sherlock Holmes. Afterwards there's a lot of world dumping on the steampunk world with demons 😈, and a lot of dull story writing with anticlimactic uninteresting plot movement with slow paced writing. All the characters were dull and a drag to read through. It made it all worse after the only interesting char you developed a liking towards was just a troll side... more>> char and your left with the scraps

The translator also dropped this year's ago, and who knows if the original story is still being written, so I don't suggest reading. <<less

This one is quite great. The beginning is a bit rough but if you can finish the first arc, you're probably gonna like the novel. I've finished this novel in the raws and I must say, it's not the best I've read but it's certainly up there.

The novel is loosely based off the Sherlock novel series and it doesn't really matter whether you've read the novel or not. In fact, only the character names, the names of a few certain places, and the Victorian era are probably the similarities between... more>> the series and this novel. The characters are also quite unlike their original inspiration. For example, our MC, Sherlock, is more feared than respected by the police, and he has a far more twisted morality.

There's a lot of details that honestly wouldn't make a lot of sense in the beginning but it's all tied up and slowly revealed as the story goes on. Not a lot of things are left unexplained at the end. Even the MC supernatural capabilities, outside of the novels power system, is also explained near the end.

About the power system, it's a very simplistic system where humans basically contracts with demons and the higher their synchronization, the stronger the demon and the contractor becomes. It goes from first level to the third level. There's also a theoretical fourth level but only one person has attained it and even the novel said something along the lines of "Since he's the only one to attained that level, it doesn't matter if he's at the fourth, fifth, or seventieth level. His strength is incomprehensible to mere mortals."

The world setting is a bit of a spoiler so I won't touch upon those. But I can say it's set in Victorian England in a steampunk era. They couldn't progress pass steam power because they're so busy and in danger of extinction with demon invasions that they can't afford to innovate and invest heavily on a promising new energy system (electricity). It does become a plot point later on the story.

As for the arcs and plot, the arcs start off slow and sometimes doesn't have a clear climax. However, it does keep the story flow quite well and foreshadow a lot of things early that becomes relevant or light your eyes up and makes you go "so that's why." As for my favorite arc, it would probably be about the Jack the Ripper Arc because it was such a fresh and amazing take on the idea.

Some of the characters that are in this novel are Watson (how can you have a Sherlock novel without him), Dante Alighieri (yes, the poet, and also the strongest contractor), Nightingale, Baskerville, Moriarty, etc.,

Overall, fun novel. I'd recommend it if you like a shorter version of LOTM. Same atmosphere, similar setting, less focus on eldritch beings, and same well thought-out ideas. If I had to nitpick between the two, it probably loses out slightly on the background and characters but I guess the author didn't want to make it too incomprehensible and planned to end it early. <<less
