Xie Shuangxue is aware that he’s an NPC in a game. He exists in Shenmo, the world’s most popular VR game, which has been live for three years now. For the third-anniversary celebration, the game developer, Boundless Sea, announced a major update, introducing a new map, “Floating Dream Clouds.” Along with the update, they released a new world storyline quest—The Book of Floating Dreams. This quest unveils an ancient tale of entangled love and betrayal between a Princess of the Feather Clan and the former Demon Emperor.

And Xie Shuangxue makes his entrance in this new storyline.

He isn’t the main character; at best, he’s the fourth male lead—a mere plot device with a shallow, basic background. As an orphan adopted by the Feather Clan, he harbors an unrequited love for the princess, which eventually turns into bitterness and revenge. Betraying everyone, he ultimately meets a fitting end when the princess personally executes him, much to the players’ satisfaction.

Xie Shuangxue: … I don’t think so.

Even NPCs have their own ideas.

So, the players who are grinding away at their quests encounter, for the first time, an NPC with an unexpected level of interactivity.

When he first appeared, the players thought Xie Shuangxue was just another pretty face, gloomy, shallow, with nothing special to offer. However, as the plot unfolded, they came to understand his endless suffering, his deep and hidden love, the hardships he endured, and all the sacrifices he made in silence.

This intricate character, Xie Shuangxue, ultimately reaches a moment of enlightenment in the final segment of the world quest. Smiling, he raises a sword and takes his own life. Under the snowy night sky, his black hair dances in the wind, blood as red as cinnabar flowing like ink—the very key to unlocking the new map.

On that day, the official Shenmo account crashed under the weight of furious players.

“Damn this hellish plot! Give me back my Ah Xue!”

“WTF, you dirty devs—how dare you kill off Shuangxue!”

“I swear, if Xie Shuangxue dies, Boundless Sea, neither will you live. smile”

The game department, drenched in curses and complaints: …For heaven’s sake, this was not the original plot!

Shenmo’s development team held an emergency meeting overnight and urgently contacted the CEO of Boundless Sea. Rumor has it that even the normally calm and collected boss, who also has an account in the game, sounded noticeably different over the phone, a mix of gritted teeth and indescribable emotions.

“He’s not dead.”

“He deceived all of them.”

MC is a self-aware NPC who is trying to escape his fate of dying in an open world game. The whole premise is pretty unique, you rarely see a gaming novel where the MC is initially non-human.

The goal of the novel is clear from the start, and everything is smoothsailing with MC trying to change his storyline. The start of the novel was really interesting and it was humourous seeing how MC has the players and his fellow NPCs wrapped around his fingers. He's really the baby of his senior... more>> brothers and VIP players.

However, a concise world built with logic is something that all holographic game novels lack and this novel is no different. A lot of plot holes are conveniently covered by the plot device of an omnipotent AI main brain. Rather than a game, the setting feels like another world. The rest of the NPCs feel like real characters and interact with players quite naturally so it didn't feel like they were playing a game.

The starting was really immersive, but the latter parts felt crammed with lore and it seemed like the author ran out of ways to connect logic and storyline together. A lot of holes are filled by the fact that ML's the developer and MC's a powerful AI. It felt like the novel could've ran properly for another 100 chapters to build up NPC-player relationships, but it ended up being rushed for the ending.

My favourite part of the novel was the relationships between MC and his fellow NPCs, so the ending was very bittersweet for me. Really wish the author took more time to expand their lore.

The translations are okay, but it seems like MTL/AI was used (or maybe just genuine human error?) so the pronouns are sometimes messed up. SF has been picking up a lot of novels recently so I hope they can edit with more care since they are charging a reading fee for advance chapters. The game event's protagonist is a crossdressing man, and some female swordsmen get referred to as "he" so it gets messy when their pronouns are confused. Not a very big deal, just note to read more carefully when these characters appear in the same paragraph and you're good to go.

That aside, the novel's actually more of a 4/5 for me, but I'll round it up. <<less

Decent novel. Some developments in the latter half were not completely logical, and the whole novel seems somewhat rushed. It had enough plot points that could have been expanded to make a more thorough ending and enjoyable read. Regardless, the novel was good. There is a noticble dip in quality going from translations to the mtl though, so bear that in mind if you decide to switch over.
