“Meal time, prisoner number 444.”

I found myself transmigrating into the body of a prisoner. A prisoner on death row who’s scheduled to die tomorrow.

However, before I could even grasp the situation, the prison was broken into with a massive explosion and I was dragged outside. Now, I was officially an escaped convict.

“Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Harenir von Lucette, leader of the Order of Sidon, the paladins that are tasked with defending the Holy Empire of Solares, and First Sword of the Order. And… I am the hero who is said to have died today.”

His soft gaze, his gentle smile, and the benevolent yet watchful air he carried around him. Everything about him made him look like a saint.

[ Help the Hero! ] [ Success Reward: Freedom ] [ Failure Penalty: Death ]

“I need the souls you command. Do you want to go back and die as a death row inmate, or will you help me and have your sentence reduced?”

“Why do you need my help? Is there a reason it must be me? I’m sure there are other necromancers in the empire.”

“Because you went around searching for as many corpses as you could, extracting their souls to use them as s*aves. You’re the only one ruthless enough to command human souls in the tens or hundreds.”

After reluctantly accepting the quest, Isaf works in secret with the hero who antagonizes him to uncover the monsters’ secrets…

“You… feel different from when we first met.”

Will Isaf be able to gain this “freedom” in a game that has zero player welfare?

i really enjoyed this so much! There were points in the middle I felt frustrated by some of the characters but the pacing was good so it didn't drag on and I was really satisfied by how things came together by the ending!

MC and ml's dynamic is very much to my taste, especially in the side stories at the end ... more>>
Spoiler

ML wanting MC to put a leash on him, mainly to help his separation anxiety but !!

[collapse]

i realised after reading that this is by the same author as traces of the sun which I also loved! So would definitely give this a shot if you enjoyed that!

Spoiler

but one thing I have to ask.. Is it a rule in every transmigration novel that the MC is actually from the supposed new world all along? This isn't a complaint about this story in particular but just that it's been a feature of every transmigration story i've read so far. To the point that i've come to expect it but it still seems to be treated as a big reveal (which is true from mc's perspective I guess).

The MC and ML are two of my favorite archetypes written well just to my taste... so to me, it’s peak. It’s just your average transmigration story, not really profound or complicated plot wise but it’s genuinely good for what it is so I recommend it. I hope I find something similar after this..

[ This review will contain slight spoilers. Major spoilers will be hidden by default and should be opened with caution by readers who don't want to be spoiled. ]

From the creator of "Traces of the Sun", a new western fantasy BL webnovel with a romance between a necromancer and the hero described to be the son of god. It's a twist on the classic "Adventurer Party" setting, think Final Fantasy type plot.

Regarding the characters, the main party consists of...

  • Isaf, the main character and main POV of the webnovel. Through the power of truck-kun, he's transmigrated into the unfortunate role of a notorious necromancer in another world... He's quite a prickly person, yet always somehow gets dragged into trouble against his will. Though, as many readers have pointed out, he's not quite the coward he appears to be, despite having a weak anemic body that can't handle much. He's the main source of comedy in this novel with the numerous misfortunate things that happen to him and his low tolerance for BS. The characters around him also like to tease him quite a bit. He's someone you feel quite bad for at times, and also someone you can't help but root for
... more>>
Spoiler

"God loves to make one person suffer..."

He carries quite a lot of trauma within him that shows up in subtle ways, especially later on in the novel when the others in the party finally realize that he's not as bad as the rumors make him out to be. But he's always been a loner, and he's very reluctant to trust others. When his companions trust him, his natural reaction is to push them away.

His development is pretty slow, but you can see as time goes on that he's beginning to change due to the positive influences of other people around him. There's also a bit of mystery that surrounds the body he possessed, his abilities, and the reason for him coming into the world...

Edit: EXCUSE ME AUTHOR WHY DID YOU GIVE HIM THE MOST TRAGIC BACKSTORY OUT OF ALL OF THEM IM SO SICKKKKK

[collapse]

  • Harenir, captain of the party and the hero of the holy empire. Though he appears as a benevolent saint to most citizens in the empire, he seems to be more callous than he actually appears underneath that always smiling face. I can't talk about why I like him without going into spoilers.
Spoiler

"... Sometimes, I think that if there really was a God, the world wouldn't be like this." - Harenir

Hands down, my favorite character of the whole novel. He's actually not that difficult to understand once you get the full picture--He's a character who was traumatized at a young age because of his tragic backstory, his entire innocent worldview was shattered when he was offered as a sacrifice by his father, lost his mother who tried to save Harenir, and pressured by expectations of the church who wants him to be the symbol of hope in the holy empire.

He's the type of character who takes on the pain of others because it's all he's ever known to do his entire life. He doesn't show weakness in front of other people because of that. By his own admission he doesn't even have that much faith in God despite being the "son of god" because of all the bad things that have happened... And he, of course, could never tell anybody this. He has to maintain the image of the hero... Unless he happens to find a man who doesn't care about his heroes or god or whatnot.

Then comes in our MC, Isaf, who sees the "real" side of Harenir. Like yes, Harenir is callous and jaded, but it's not surprising considering everything he's been through. I think I love how imperfect Harenir is, especially in contrast to the "perfect" image of the hero. His "real" personality is slightly childish and petty, but it actually gives me catharsis to read because knowing his backstory, he didn't have any time to be a child after all those awful things happened.

"You-Did you poorly fake your death on purpose?" (Isaf)

"Mhm... Yes, I didn't want to be the cause of any considerable chaos in the Empire." (Harenir)

"Why on earth...?"

"Because that's how I was taught."

At the end of the day, I think he's still a person who wants to do the right thing and wants to be the best person he can be even if it's for the purpose of preserving his mother's memory. But he's also learning in his own way how to trust people again, though in a different context from Isaf.

[collapse]

  • Kalterik, or what I would like to call the resident tsundere. He's the type who acts before he thinks, and he has quite the temper and boisterous personality, it may take a while for readers to warm up to him. But he certainly does have his own charm, and he's definitely very funny to watch after he warms up to Isaf.
  • Mela, who I like to think of as the cool mysterious type character who stays in the shadows and doesn't speak much. She always keeps a collected head, even in the face of danger. I won't spoil much on her, but she has a few surprises up her sleeve and is diligent in following Harenir for a reason.
  • Noi, a fairy with a youthful appearance who is actually older than all the characters from this list. He is very talkative and knowledgeable about a lot of things in this fantasy world, the author likes to use him for exposition lolol.
    Spoiler

His backstory doesn't come until chapter 110+ but it's a little depressing to learn that all members of this party have traumatizing pasts.

    [collapse]
  • En (or N, from H.N), a black cat serving as Isaf's familiar who can send system messages to his owner. He's as prickly as his owner, and doesn't like being treated like a black cat.
  • There are other side characters, their interactions with Isaf are also so fun to read!!! The author does such a good job of coming up with a colorful cast of characters that are never boring to meet :D
Regarding the romance development:

I really, really love the development between Isaf and Harenir. Isaf and Harenir both at the beginning of the story are clearly only working together because it's in their best interest to, and a lot of Isaf's actions are quite puzzling to Harenir probably because he isn't what he expected at all. But as the story goes on, both of them come to understand each other, even much more than the other party members can catch up with.

Spoiler

After getting to know each other, they both start prioritizing each other and doing things they don't normally do for each other's sake. It's very sweet. Isaf, who wants to defy the Empire's will imposed on Harenir because he sympathizes with how Harenir really feels on the inside and hates how Harenir's actions are taken for granted. Harenir, who has to deal with the fact that an acclaimed mass mu*derer has become very important to him, and starts feeling the strong need to protect this man who has a very weak body... (and also comes to the startling realization that he, indeed, a cat person hehe)...

They are incredibly sweet to each other, and I strongly support the author in making their soul-binding ritual last forever (many readers have called it a marriage contract lololol)

As of chapter 130, the romance still hasn't been established properly but that's because the characters are too focused on stopping the villain. But as mentioned, they have many romantic moments together even if they haven't officially acknowledged their feelings to each other yet >.<

[collapse]

Regarding the R-19 scenes and content warnings...

Spoiler

Well, if you've ever read "The Other World's Books Depend on the Bean Counter", you know exactly what you're getting into. There have been three R-19 scenes as of this review, and the first two were due to a curse which immediately led to the "f*ck or die" trope scenarios. I think I would label it dubious consent rather than noncon, though one of the times the MC was begging to the ML to let him die because he was more embarrassed about having s*x with Harenir than worried about never waking up again, LOL.......

All I can say is that they were S-tier scenes in my personal opinion. I even saw some comments saying stuff along the lines of, "I don't normally like reading R19 scenes... but they were hot fr fr"

Edit: The third R19 scene has hit the fandom, Isaf initiated it while drunk and wanting to know how it feels like w/o the curse. Harenir spent most of it teasing Isaf, it feels like he is becoming increasingly more clingy and unhinged towards Isaf as the series goes on (I'm not complaining...)

Anyway, it didn't disappoint at all. The author is very good at showing the progression in their relationship in these scenes.

[collapse]

Anyway, if you're uncomfortable, you can skip the scenes entirely. So far, there's no plot relevance from the scenes themselves, just that they happened.

...

If you like the adventurer fantasy setting, you'll definitely love the novel. It really does have a bit of everything: worldbuilding, mystery, character development and bonding, an overarching plot, comedic moments. I'd say it's mostly a light read with a few serious moments in between, and definitely worth sticking out for if you have even the slightest interest in what's going on!!!

Favorite moments from the novel:

Spoiler

- Isaf, who has to wake up Kalterik from a curse reliving his childhood trauma, deciding to provoke him by saying, "When you die, I'll subjugate your soul and make you do my bidding, " and Kalterik gets so angry at him the curse gets broken LMAOOO

- Isaf didn't think he needed to prepare for the journey to the desert since he assumed it would be short or the game would provide resources. He ends up stealing the beef jerky off of some thieves and Kalterik was like WTF that's why you didn't prepare anything??? Haha, and also Harenir stole the cloak from one of the thieves and gives it to Isaf because he noticed him shivering the entire time... so sweet.

- Harenir interrogating Isaf about what he will do after the big bad villain is defeated, and Isaf saying "I'll go somewhere nobody knows me... Fine, a deserted island." and Harenir never lets him live that answer down!!!

- Harenir getting hurt, Isaf coming over and crying into Harenir's chest, "You-You can't die here. Eugh, Haren, please..." and then it turns out Harenir was really just taking a small rest, LMAOOO. Isaf, justifiably, got so embarrassed, hahahaha.

- Isaf dreading that he has to tell Harenir that he has no idea how to break the connection binding their souls together and avoiding him because of that and Harenir misunderstanding that Isaf hates him because of what happened the night they were forced to do THAT (cough).

- Isaf needing to take one for the team and get left behind for the bounty hunters so Harenir's party can punish the s*ave traders accordingly. Isaf admitting to Harenir that even though he doesn't know him very well, he's still the one who understands him the most and Harenir giving him something to ward off the evil spirits when he's gone... and then Harenir ends up revealing his return because he was too worried for Isaf... THEY ARE IN LOVE YOUR HONOR BYE

- Harenir accidentally finding the gift Isaf was gonna give him... it's a worry doll to help with the nightmares because Isaf feels bad he won't be there to help him sleep anymore after the soul-binding ritual is broken off... I THINK HARENIR FELL IN LOVE WITH HIM ALL OVER AGAIN ITS SO OVER

I could continue this list but you should just read the novel. There are so many more scenes that are so memorable and I could keep going all day.

[collapse]

REALLY, REALLY MAJOR SPOILERS:

Spoiler

Isaf POV as he's sacrificing himself:

No, what I want... All I want is...

I just wanted to make sure that the skies you saw in your last moments weren't gray.

The way I'm actually obsessed? I binged it up to this part.

While this is a pretty common troupe of a party of a hero, running around defeating evil, it is executed pretty well and has it's own twists. Worldbuilding is solid and interesting too.

At the beginning we have a MC that just get's thrown into this world, without any Information at all, but bit by bit the readers starts to figure out the situaton he's in, alongside the MC.

And he does that quite smartly too, I find his personality to... more>> be quite likable.

The pacing of this is nice too, it takes a while for the MC and the ML and his party members to warm up to each other, obviously, the body he's in, is pretty much that of a mass mu*derer as far as we know. Although I'm not sure if that's really the case, we don't have much Information on the original owner of the body yet. But that's the charme of this novel, the readers only know as much as the MC, gathering hints bit by bit. It leaves you wondering about questions left unsolved. Making you want to read more and more while also enjoying the progress of the relationship between the MC and the ml. And the party members too ofc.

Spoiler

Ah one more thing, the incidents with the curse of the incubus felt kind of forced, I mean I'm the last person to complain about smut, but why did it happen twice XD the aftermath of the curse was so tough to read the first time around, I had to take several cringe breaks and had to take a walk around my room before continuing, is it just me? And now it happened again XD I wish there was a comment section lmaoo

Plot 6/10, Romance 6/10, MC 9/10. I don't like misunderstandings, that's the only reason I rate the romance lower than a ten. The plot is ok, its kinda a repeat of the usual, but the MC saves it (in my opinion). He views the world in a different way than is usually used in these types of stories. I particularly enjoy how he tries to overcome situations when he is met with someone that his previous body's owner knew, where he hasn't outright said that he is not actually Isaph,... more>> but instead, he tries to speak in a way to discover who the person is to Isaph and follow through with that. Also another nice aspect that this story presents is how the MC isn't overpowered from the beginning even when he has the ability to be overpowered. He has to instead struggle through using his power and even often ends up passing out (, only after he completed the mission though ofc). Overall though, it's a really fun story, I also really enjoy watching the MC open up to others around him and when him and the ML develop a more personal relationship between shared secrets. <<less

Love this story. Really scratched my current itch for stories with "weak/ sickly" protagonist but isnt completely useless and OP ML. The characters and interesting and three dimensional. Slow burn romance, with satisfying growth and smutty payoff. Good mystery and action too. Very excited to see where the story goes.

I like it, its still early in the story but I like this because its not just romance but an actual action/adventure story. Well from what I've read its focusing more into the adventure than the romance, I love the interactions with the characters and the cast number to be quite small but memorable.

I also love how MC doesnt let himself get bullied just cause the body he is possessing did bad things and will talk back at people that are bad mouthing him.

i loveeee this novel, if you’re thinking about reading it... DO IT

it contains the following tropes:

Spoiler

1. hero x so called “villain”

2. weak body but magically strong mc

3. caring ML and damaged mc

4. SMUT

5. transmigration

[collapse]

if you aren’t a big fan of those genres I suggest you leave.

Spoiler

the plot itself revolves around a “transmigrator” who found themselves in the body of a death row inmate, with no memories of who’s body he’s in. That’s where the system comes in, letting the MC believe that he’s in some kind of “game” and if he finishes all the quests he can go home, thus embarking on a journey with the Hero

Spoiler

ml

[collapse]

overall I enjoyed the adventure part of the plot since I havent found a lot of BL with action, adventure and the hero x necromancer/forbidden person trope, the story itself my not have been a brand new concept, but I still found it very interesting,

Spoiler

mostly how the characters around the MC slowly changed their opinions of the MC and began to care for him

[collapse]

it’s strong on the “mystique” vibe, (not gonna spoil) but it’s not something u can’t work out by urself, it’s quite an easy read

i really liked that the characters around the MC and ML all have their own baggage to carry with them which gives them more depth as characters, of course the mc’s and the ml’s life we experience a lot closer, specifically dealing with the mc’s loneliness and insecurity

[collapse]

so there we have it folks an easy read with good characters, a mildly intriguing plot line (not a lot of thinking), hero x necromancer trope and a good amount of action (both in and out of the bedroom 😉) please give it a read! <<less

Im quite surprised at the amount of positive reviews? Hehe don't be mistaken this novel can really piss you off.

First of all I'm confused on why protagonists especially in BL have become so unpromising. I don't expect them to command the wind and rain breaking boulders with their chests and dividing oceans, but is it too much to ask for them to have some dignity?

The MC finds himself in the body of an evil villain necromancer who's about to be killed. Except before that he's saved by the hero who's... more>> supposed to be dead along with his group of snarky companions. Intriguing right? An evil villain vs Hero what kind of philosophical debates will take place....

Unsurprisingly..... none. And yeah, I acknowledge the MC was just an antisocial young adult but still! At the very least if he won't pretend to act like the villain its annoying watching him saddle himself with the deeds the villain did. Its the equavilient of someone shitting on you and not only can you not wipe it off or mock others who snarl at you for it but instead you join them to mock yourself. No matter how 'good' a person the MC is the hero and his gang won't see it so why even bother?

Sigh.... I get pissed off just thinking about it. Alright I won't justify the original villains actions of manslaughter of a village and other innocents but the worst crime in literature is to be unlikeable. In real life I believe the MC is good for not siding with the villain but since its a novel I can't help but curse.

Especially since if you really think about it in this kind of world where s*avery and discrimination run rampant towards different races and necromancers its not that surprising that the villain did what he did. After all if your not born with status or power your life is insignificant as an ant adding on to the monsters that can finish entire towns in one swoop if your poor and have no status no sh*t you'll do whatever it takes to get stronger.

Its a world where the weak are oppressed the strong are feared is taken to another level if this was to actually take place but the author glosses over it like most others in this genre since its romance; of course that's fine too but to understand Og villains actions we have to apply some logic.

Honestly I hate the ML hero too tsk he's every frown and smile is written like its supposed to please us, but I really would like to beat the sh*t out of him. Besides he's too overpowered at one point I was just thinking if he has healing powers and is chosen or whatever why doesn't he just ascend to heaven, instead of dancing around me..

Tsk, anyway he's whatever but his companions are even worse sigh. I just wish the protagonist would say something to these privileged nobles, all of them have killed people of course not as bad as Og villain but they're not innocent either Haha.

If MC said something like 'Life and death is nature’s law. All living beings are equal, and everyone has their right to survive and be killed. There might be royalty and lower beings, but in face of death, a person’s death is no different from a pig’s, what’s the difference? They’re both dead.' - Fang yuan Reverend insanity.

But this is just a dime a dozen novel its my fault for expecting too much Lol. <<less

So far I enjoy it.

Mostly the story concentrate on demolishing the Evil, but I like the way Isaf/Isaph face every situation nonchalantly. His way of speaking sometimes make me burst out laughing, and there is Slow burn romace, but with 'spicy' in the middle because of succubus/Incubus curse.

Waiting for more chapter.

Edited after finishing the main story. I like the story, the complicated in the plot, the premises and characters. I cried so hard when read Isac back story part, and how undead so clingy towards him, it hurts so much.... more>> Please read it guys, I recommend it. <<less

The word 'balanced' literally belongs to this novel and I'm not even exaggerating.

The action, character dynamics, romance and... smut—it's all so well done. The pacing is perfect and the plot is clear that you're completely hooked without ever feeling rushed or bored. It may seem simple at first glance but it's actually clever and has good twists. Not overly complicated, yet still incredibly well written.

What I especially appreciated is that you don't have to wait forever to get answers. Even if you get confused, don't worry! the story knows exactly... more>> when to reveal things and when it does, the explanations are clear and quick.

Even the plot behind MC and Isaph—

Spoiler

It was so smart and well-planned. The twist was genuinely shocking and nothing felt wasted, every chapter had purpose and was totally worth it.

[collapse]

--About the MC:

Isaph has become my number one favorite transmigration MC.

I absolutely loved his personality! He's unpredictable and his reactions to the world are so real and funny. He's the definition of calm-chaotic energy and just so incredibly likeable. He's also so strong (def his body isn't strong at all. Lol), I also admire his strong mentality after all that he has been through but he basically carried everything.

—About the ML:

Haren, our handsome hero. At first, he seems too perfect and overpowered, a beloved hero acting like an innocent saint BUT as you get to know him more, (just like Isaph does) your perspective might changes.

Spoiler

He's the definition of a green flag tried to act like umm a yellow flag? in front of the MC just because he's a villain... but ends up turning into the whole Amazon rainforest! Don't you just love it when the ML gets obsessed with the MC??

[collapse]

—Their development:

The love between Isaph and Haren is a push-and-pull dynamic. Constantly shifting between closeness and distance. It's not a slow burn, but the enemies-to-lovers energy is kinda there. They're opposites, magnetically drawn to each other and that's hands down my favorite kind of romance.

Both fell hard and harder for each other.

—The side characters are great too.

They don't feel like stiff NPCs or like they're taking up unnecessary screen time. It's like they wait for their turn to step in, do their part and then step back, just the way it should be.

What truly sets The Hero's Coffin apart as a Hero x Villain story is this:

Spoiler

Both the MC and the ML are just wearing masks to perfectly match the hero and villain tropes.

[collapse]

—The ending?

After reading so many transmigration stories, I usually start losing motivation to finish the last chapters bc the ending is either predictable, lacking in detail or just boring. But this one?

It was different—so good, the most satisfying ending.

-About the R19 content and the Side Story:

Yeah no words. like damn... definitely worth it.

10/10 — 5/5 stars. That's it.

Wish to read more novels from the same author and thanks for the translator for picking up this great novel!

PS: I advise readers not to take any reviews that are clearly based on personal preferences or early impressions too seriously. Not every low rating reflects the actual quality of the novel. <<less

It's still early in the story but this one is very promising. While it utilizes a frequently used trope (i.e., transmigrated into a villain and having the protagonist fall in love with them) the execution is refreshing enough that it doesn't feel repetitive. I like MC's nonchalant acceptance (bordering on numb resignation) of his lot as a 'villain'. His internal monologue hints that his tragic previous life made him that way (and this aspect of his personality will probably be explored more in later chapters) but for now, it makes... more>> for a rather interesting dynamic between him and the ML, who doesn't seem to know what to make of our MC. I hope the quality stays this way and the writing doesn't deteriorate in later chapters. <<less

Perfect.

The way the romance develops is so believable and it’s so perfectly paced... you can really feel them falling for each other which is something you don’t see a lot nowadays! A lot of the time at least one or both of them start off in love... Not only is this a breath of fresh air but the development of the romance is legitimately one of the best I’ve seen. Like in all time.

Each moment they share, you can feel their bond grow. And that applies to the whole party!... more>> (All of whom are also really good characters who each get their own arc)

Seeing the bonds between the party grow made me so happy and the way they all cared for each other is adorable.

And of course, the story? Is amazing? It really hit like EVERY mark.

Wow. This novel is just so amazing!

There's a great plot and story arc, and there's also a great romance.

First, about the romance -- I just need to say that Haren, the ML, is such a green flag. I love him. He is what you would call not just a green flag but the whole forest.

This is one of those rare romance novels where there is way more romantic tension than s*xual tension between the two leads. Just... at some point when they grow a little closer, not romantically but in... more>> a human to human sense, there starts to be sooo many very ambiguous moments between them and I really love it....

Spoiler

I'll be honest, there were many moments in the middle parts of the story where I thought the MC was running away from his feelings and I really hated it but trust!! TRUST the author!! is all I have to say about this lol. They did such a phenomenal job with the character arcs for the MC and the ML, and after reading everything except the last few 'epilogue' chapters, I can safely say that the author knows what they're doing lol.

Spoiler

Also, other reviews mentioned the succubus/incubus scene... I won't say much but I just need to point out that this is a romance novel with R-18 scenes. If a succubus/incubus pops up, by the unspoken law of all smutty romance novels, of course it's going to lead to a s*xual encounter between the two leads in some way. if anything I thought that said s*x scenes would be wayyy more forced than they actually were, and for the succubus/incubus scenes specifically, they weren't super forced because the author tied in plausible reasons from the plot and also used it as a chance to further develop the relationship between the two leads. and also, who doesn't enjoy a hot s*x scene between two consenting adults? and yes, they were all consensual.

[collapse]

I just love how the climax of the story unfolds at the end and how the two of them fall for each other basically at the same pace... it's not a matter of one person fell first, then the other fell after that... I thought it would be like that but they fell in love with each other pretty much simultaneously. and it's nice because you can see the changes in the way the ML treats the MC and talks to him even if he never explicitly states his feelings in this moments!

As for the plot... I like it lol. Tbh I can't say much without spoiling something but let's just say that I never expected the MC's character development/character plot or storyline to go the way that it did, but that's a good thing! It's not a sudden plot twist but a carefully puzzle. Throughout the story we see the author occasionally drop a puzzle piece or two where it's relevant but we don't really get the full picture until the end of the story and when it comes it's really amazing! I was kind of right with my own theories about Isaph's past but only a tiny bit.

anyway. just go read it 😌 Also, I need to praise the artist that drew the cover because it's such a perfect portrayal of Haren and Isaph, all the way down to their small expressions and the shade of Haren's eyes! I just love looking at it because of how pretty it is! <<less

Good old fashioned “reincarnated into a fantasy video game villain” story. I’ll keep my reviews vague so I don’t spoil.

I liked that they were both really slow to realize their feelings because it made sense for the settings. Isaph was a renown mu*derer and necromancer, so the hero couldn’t easily fall for him. Likewise, in both worlds Isaph had been subject to intense ostracism and malice, so any kindness was quickly rationalized and any butterflies were misinterpreted as anxiety.

Do the misunderstandings get frustrating? Yes. But when you take a second... more>> to think about why they act like that, it makes sense.

The plot was pretty simplistic, but that’s because it’s a video game. In a video game, you go to one map, clear it, then go to the next one.

The demons were pretty simplistic and dumb, but it kind of aligns with the video game setting as well, so can’t really complain.

The only aspect I wish was different was that most of the mysteries resolve in the final 30 chapters. There are a bunch of hints sprinkled, but it still feels like they saved everything for last when some of the reveals could have been sprinkled a bit earlier to keep things interesting.

The smut was well-written and the romance was tropey but in a good way.

Spoiler

When their souls are connected and he wakes him up from the shared nightmare? “That seems lonely.” EEEE lol I screamed. Yes tropey but they’re tropes for a reason.

One other tiny minor TL thing I noticed is that some of the onomatopoeias were written in English letters but not translated to their English equivalents, especially towards the end. Some you can guess from context, but it kind of takes you out of the scene when random letter-salad appears to convey a sound and you don’t know what sound it’s supposed to be.

  • “His mood sank jjuuk”
  • “Jomul jomul, he fiddled with the cat's paw pads”
  • “Growing afraid deolkeok, he asked trembling”
Those are just a few but there’s at least one per chapter towards the end. Not a deal-breaker but just a little distracting. Otherwise the TL is great! <<less

I really, really like this book. 2 chapters in and I was talking to myself about how much I liked the vibes.

I liked that we were allowed into Haren's head sometimes. I liked the way their interactions blossomed and became something more.

That moment when Haren was injured but tried to mask it because he heard footsteps, then he turned and saw Isaph and relief filled his face? Yeah, that exact one. I loved that scene. Knowing he could lean on Isaph and didn't need to be strong on his own

[collapse]

The way Haren and Isaph confessed to each other was sweet. I liked how they worried about each other. I liked that the author didn't make things easy for Isaph and he had to figure out alone the mess he found himself in. This book was a whole lot of fun.

My only gripe is how the author took the lazy way out in developing their relationship. I hate that the well-worn trope of aphrodisiac (or in this case, curse) was used. You couldn't have them have s*x naturally??? Was that too slow for you, Author-nim?😒 That just screams lazy writing.😒 It'd have been way hotter if they drew close to each other and had s*x out of their volition just because they couldn't keep their hands to themselves rather than the nonsense route the author chose.

Spoiler

First two times they had s*x was because of a curse, third time was because Isaph was drunk🙄 Like please, lame as f*ck😒

Lovely book overall tho. Would totally recommend. <<less

The final chapter was uploaded today, and I've never felt so heartbroken. It was such a ride, that I can't find any word that befits its impact on my entire being. The characters--Isaph, Haren, Mela, Noi--they were all written quite well. I'm pretty sure the author really cared about all of them. Although I (somewhat mildly) disliked the r-18 scenes, the story itself was fantastic and wraps up (mostly) nicely in the end. Some tiny things are a bit... off putting, but if you're willing to power through that small... more>> section, everything else is a beautiful walk under the dying sun.

All in all, I really do recommend reading this. Skip the (very few) adult parts if they aren't your tea; ignoring it is always an option. It's mostly about plot than s*xual content, so for people like me who prefer story over anything else, you've come to the right book. (。•̀ᴗ-) ✧ <<less

Story might get better but I found it to be frustrating to follow an MC who’s essentially helpless to the whims of the plot. While the MC is actually interesting and definitely the strongest part of the novel, there are so many issues with the plot that aren’t addressed and the MC has no agency in the plot whatsoever—he’s just forced to follow whatever quest pops up basically.

OK read, and it might get better past the point I got to but nothing spectacular.

It was good and entertaining, I won't read more though, if the side stories were already finished maybe I would've but there still releasing and I'm reading a bunch of stuff already at the moment so I'm trying to decrease the amount, so basically it is good but the side stories may seem too long
