The Hunter’s Gonna Lay Low

Hunter Cha Eui-jae, who was dispatched to seal a rift that appeared over the West Sea, was flung out as soon as he closed the rift. When he came to his senses, he was lying in a garbage dump.

Starving, he was drawn like a zombie is to blood to a hangover soup restaurant, where he realized that he had fallen into South Korea, eight years in the future.

In this era, disaster alerts notify people of rift openings in advance, ASMR videos of slimes gathered from dungeons were trending, and idle hunters livestream unboxings of A-rank longswords.

Unlike the past, where people trembled in fear of an impending apocalypse, the future was surprisingly peaceful, leaving Cha Eui-jae feeling empty. Since things had turned out this way, why not start a second chapter of life as a part-timer at the hangover soup restaurant, rather than being a hunter?

“That’s strange.”

“…”

“Have we met somewhere before?”

Cha Eui-jae’s plan to quietly spend his remaining days as the only part-time worker at the decades-old hangover soup restaurant goes awry when he encounters a mysterious, gas-masked individual…

Honestly, I'd rate it about 4.5 stars, but since I can't give half stars, I'll give it 4 (it's hard for me to give it a full 5 stars).

After reading the manhwa, I decided to read the novel because I was so curious. So far, the story is good and the idea is quite interesting. The conflict feels forced because the plot isn't developed enough, so the foundation the author built raised my expectations but didn't quite meet them. The explanation about the end is still lacking, and the reason... more>> why the system exists is also unexplained, even though it feels like the plot is already in the mid-to-late stages. <<less

I have to write a review because I got hooked so much on this TT _ TT

The author does a good job on directing the flow! The way the story flows is really easy to follow and there's no weird "surprise element that is impossible to happen and hola it suddenly happen!" that you can't guess. The story is quite straight forward, so you can roughly guess what will happen next if you pay attention to the hints given in the story, which is very fun!

And I really love the... more>> characters~ the bad guys are fairly annoying and the good guys are good (you can find them annoying but later you might find them funny and enjoyable!) I think their personality fits given the backstory given to each character. The balance between the main characters and side characters are good too! Also I think everytime a new character is added, we are given some time to remember them, if we forgot then usually the description will be helpful. So it's quite easy to remember the non-main characters too!

The romance is a bit of slowburn but it's the charm point!!! I'm seriously in love with their interaction haha dear lord I love the ML taking care of MC so much. Maybe at the beginning MC is quite annoying but I can understand later on why he's like that ;;

If you are lazy-brain like me, I highly recommend reading this novel because it's easy to digest ^^ the funny and angst part is balanced really well~ <<less

It's one of the better ones there. Author's writing style is easy to read. There are no unnecessary repetition. There is a lot of angst but it is skillfully interwined with comedy.

Characters are interesting. Characterization is consistent. (Even if their behaviour is frustrating I can understand why they are the way they are).

Plot is interesting. Something new, I didn't read a story like this one before. Romance is slow burn and that's okay. I look forward for when there will be something more goin on between MC and ML... more>> (I feel really sorry for Sa-young... Eui-jae is so... dense). The only thing I could complain about is that characters don't feel like they are desperate enough? I mean world is ending.. come on..

Everything's really cute!! I recommend this novel because there's no 2nd love interest for either the ML or MC, the writing is consistent and smooth, the side characters are really likeable (they sort of lack common sense, unable to figure out the mc's identify despite it being clear of who he is at times, but it doesn't get in the way of the story) and I love the dynamic between the MC and ml!

The dynamic between the MC and ML is kinda slow burn because the MC is conflicted of... more>> what he's feeling for him. They're both green flags and don't have a toxic relationship (also each other's first loves!).

What annoys me is the world building is kinda confusing because they don't specify anything but I'm here for romance. I kinda get annoyed of how the MC is a 'action first, thoughts later' kind of person but it's sort of reasonable as he's always done action first to save people. <<less

So far this story captured my attention when I'm reading it in manhwa version then later on reads the web novel. The story is captivating, the plot, the characters, and the setting itself is nice. The translation is a chef's kiss, I love that on every chapter there's a word that I needed to search because of its deep meaning. Although its tag as Slow romance when it's really not, but rather slow paced story.

The MC has some kind of dokja vibes (or was it based from KDJ?) but our guy is frustrating because of how he acts dumb sometimes that leads to making poor decisions. Although its really nice that there's some funny moments in the characters but sometimes its not connected to the story like for example in one chapter

Spoiler

In artisan exhibition where the MC excuse himself to go to the restroom to search for information about the exhibition, (I mean he could have done that before going there?) then he encounter Hong yeseong there were secretly made a ticket scanner (idk what its called but something to detect if the ticket is registered or unregistered) like this scene is out of place, I don't get why the author made this scene that does not have any connection to the plot anyways.

[collapse]

The other characters aside from ML and MC has no depth too, really disappointing. I really like to see more of jung bin's character and hong yeseong.

But overall this is fun to read, the MC and ML has strong chemistry, kind of hoping that the end is not tragic.

It’s not bad, it’s just that I read it at the same time as “Delayed my Death for the Will” which has the same exact setup so it was hard to keep them straight. They diverge a lot later, with this one being more focused on time travel and regressions. Also, regardless of how well it’s done, multiple regressions makes a story confusing.

So, the story is good, I’m just frustrated reading two very similar stories back to back when neither of them are fully translated. I’ll probably come back to... more>> this one later, but I need a palette cleanser. <<less

It took me like around 4 days to catch up from chp 1-213 but it’s so f*cking good. I was actually attracted that it was hunters themed but yaoi! And at first it was quite nice, the world building and mysteries are really nice BUT

Spoiler

the f*cking slow burn and doom yaoi HURTS ME SO MUCH like wtfff hey broo why, it's those novel that everything you see in the novel, even the tiny details has use/foreshadows something. The angst between the main characters like seriously makes me wanna stab myself, like I want them to be happy BUT THE WORLD ISNT also I quite like the concept of “the end of the world” like literally, the end comes when you think about it, when you say it. Almost as if saying that humans brought this upon themselves, you wished/called for the end and so the end came. It's that saying “Think of devil and devil is here” instead of there being a villain who is the direct cause of the end (there prob is it just havent showed up idrk im just speculating at this point becz it gives me so much pain) but really, the concept of the end, the time travels, the ‘this is your third chance’ its a kind of novel that speaks of what if the world was going to end again, and way that we are slowly being guided to discover what happened is very fun. I hope it ends well, almost somewhere around mid154-200 I was like srsly biting my fingers wondering and desperately wishing if they will ever f*ck. Like please??? PLEASE 🥺

[collapse]

I just wanna say the world building is actually amazing, some might feel like its forced up, but to me if not it might not become interesting. The elements that gather in this novel isn’t uncommon but so far I love the world building. It's a bit suffocating now because of the plot but I think it's very, very good. You need to lock in at the first few chapters because its super frustrating <<less

I think what bothered me about this story is that the author was forcing themselves to write a plot they're not particularly interested in. The setting and the world are window-dressing. The author's real passion, and it really shows in their excited and excessive writing, is when the two MCs meet and interact.

Problem for me, is that I find one character's behavior completely baffling, and the other vexing to the point of wishing they would walk off the stage and never return.

So, now I'm reading a story where the author... more>> seems really excited about writing these interactions and a relationship with a character I can't stand, and I'm like... what is even the point of reading? Then I got to the poison scene and I just straight gave up. <<less

The Hunter's Gonna Lay Low is a novel full of rich and well-developed characters, with unparalleled comedy and a well-structured plot (although a little confusing at times). The worldbuilding leaves something to be desired in some aspects, but that's something I can turn a blind eye. It's not focused on action scenes, like epic fights with monsters and such, but the mystery and the writing itself make up for it in building the tension in the novel. It's definitely one of my favorite novels.

It's worth a 4, 5 rating.

In addition,... more>> the translation by Mentoltrans is simply perfect!

I tried to read it from the raws once... seriously, don't do that guys, unless you can read Korean.

Spoilers will be between the tags ;)

--------- Up to chapter 311 -----------

Plot: The novel starts off with a slow pace and tricks you into thinking it has a fun slice of life vibe, but after about 100+ chapters it does a shocking 180. It's from there that the angst finally starts to appear. I was stunned trying to understand how that silly and lighthearted novel had turned into this. I was even afraid that things would never be the same again and the novel would lose all its humour given the funeral atmosphere that started to form after
Spoiler

the Day of Change,

[collapse]
but thankfully the novel found a good balance between dark themes and comic relief.

So far the plot is very well structured, nothing that is said is forgotten or by chance. Many hints of future events were left since the first chapters and we only realize several chapters later. I was speechless when
Spoiler

Euijae finds out that grandma always knew he was J, and this was made explicit from the 3rd chapter. Seriously, I went back to confirm that the author had really written that.

[collapse]

I have to admit, the plot is very confusing at first, even more so because it deals with
Spoiler

time travel and parallel realities,

[collapse]
but after a little patience and time the information starts to fit together and you can understand it clearly.

I still can't say whether there are plot holes or not, because the novel is not finished and, as I said, a lot of information that seems like it will be lost at the beginning is taken up again with a good plot twist later on. Many times I looked at it and said "huh, but that doesn't make sense, because..." and after a while the thing in question is explained and I'm like "oh, so that's why... wow".

Worldbuilding: As I said, the worldbuilding leaves a lot to be desired. Despite being a system with skills, inventory and classes (that classic one that seems like a game), these skills are very vague and often seem more like innate powers than an actual system. In general, things are summarized as "he has 'poison skills', 'shadow skills', 'shield skills', 'fire skills', etc".

There is no more information, such as activation conditions, stats, time, counter-effects or proper explanation of how it works. The characters just use them as if they were magical powers.

Many times they work or are only remembered based on the plot's needs, such as Euijae's 'Soundless steps', for example, he always used it at the beginning to avoid being discovered, but later when he goes to infiltrate a place or sneak up on someone silently, this skill simply doesn't exist, because the plot doesn't want it to work.

(Not a spoiler, just a little rant about some worldbuilding flaws examples)

Spoiler
    • The 'Trackers eyes' that he could use to map the structure of these infiltration sites, to discover the location of enemies and allies? It doesn't exist in those moments either.
    • And to this day I still don't understand what exactly happened with the 'Poker face' trait.
    • Seo Mingi's shadow power, he can teleport through the shadows (I think, idk it was never explained at all), but when he needs it most, that's not viable either. Sometimes he can track the shadows, sometimes not; Sometimes he can hide himself and other people in the shadows, sometimes not. It all depends on what the plot wants to happen.
    • They only remember the Romantic Opener when the plot WANTS them to have fast transportation, because if the plot doesn't want it hahahaha they'll go on foot anyway so they don't have enough time and everything goes wrong.
    • And that happens with the items too. HYS's teleportation sheets, when the plot allows it, they have about 23 sheets left over, now when the plot doesn't want it, those sheets aren't even mentioned or they're gone. And like, with such an important item, why didn't they ever stock up on it for emergencies???
    • Sometimes the inventory is there, sometimes it isn't.
[collapse]

And don't expect the characters to get into trouble and have to be creative with their skills to escape or anything like that. They stay pretty much on the basics.

Anyway, the worldbuilding is not consistent at all, it is ruled based on the will of the plot itself.

Apart from that, the somewhat flawed worldbuilding didn't interfere much with my experience with the novel, since it's not focused on fights or the system itself. So it does get a little annoying sometimes, bcz I can think of at least 5 other better ways they could solve a problem, but I put up with it because it's more trivial things and the novel can keep going well.

Characters: the essence of the novel is here, in my opinion. Especially from the second volume onwards (144+ chapters). Thanks to the multiple POVs, we get a very broad and detailed view of the situations from the POV of several different characters.

At first I thought it would be boring because of this, but I LOVED seeing how each character feels, acts, or thinks in certain situations; I really read it and can think "this is so much like them lol". It's really good to have a perspective beyond the protagonist's and even to understand how others perceive him.

Everyone is very remarkable and has important roles to keep the plot going, so the plot doesn't rely exclusively on the MC. Thank God they have some agency.

Oh, and we have real female representation here, thank god.

After so many BLs where there are no women with an impact on the story, here we have great examples of women who don't necessarily depend on physical strength to have importance in the story (Yoon Gaeul and the director).

Even Honeybee had and is having a development beyond 'a strong hothead' after the
Spoiler

case of Mathew's addiction,

[collapse]
I love my queens.

In general, the characters are very consistent.

Romance: first of all, it's a slooooow burn. Don't expect anything to happen until about 60+ chapters and romantic interactions only after about 130+ chapters.

Well, something turns me off a little bit with this romance, because it seems like one minute they're super in love and the next Euijae is like "we're not that close"... dude, you were making out 1 chapter ago, you stopped investigating something important because you were worried sick about him, he pops into your thoughts every 2 seconds... AND YOU HAVE THE GUTS TO TELL YOURSELF THAT YOU'RE NOT THAT CLOSE?????

Like, one moment he accepts that he loves Sayoung and the next he turns around and says
Spoiler

It'S JuSt BeCaUsE He'S tHaT cHiLd

[collapse]
F*CK YOU BRO. One moment he has no problem with intimacy, the next he's like "hell nah". These ups and downs they have are so bizarre, I don't know what they consider their relationship anymore, ESPECIALLY Euijae, that freaking potato.

Apart from that, I loved his internal conflict with the fact
Spoiler

that Sayoung is his """little brother""". Like, it took him a long time to work through his feelings and separate the frail child he rescued from the adult Sayoung. He feels conflicted about romantically loving someone he once considered family and needed a hell lot of time to sort it out.

I hate when novels deal with these complicated relationships and resolve them in a simple way without any reflection, just a "omg, I kissed him, now I don't see him as family anymore let's get married ;) " so The Hunter's Gonna Lay Low won my heart in that regard.

[collapse]

Protagonist: Our protagonist (Cha Euijae) is not the smartest, but he is not a complete idiot either. He is the kind of guy who trusts his own physical strength so much that he doesn't even think before acting. Since if things go wrong he can just beat everyone up and run away, why bother planning properly?

Besides, he awakened when he was 17, and since then he was only used to close dungeons and rifts after the Day of the Rift. Since he was super op and was spat out 8 years into the future, he never had time to mature this more strategic or political side that the others had developed in this more peaceful future. But he is not clueless, just too hot-headed.

Spoiler

He has a strong PTSD due to the West Sea Rift that slowly becomes clear as time goes by. It's cool to see the small effects it has on him, even shaping his actions and perceptions.

He's the strongest guy in Korea, and yet he's afraid of simple things like silence and solitude. The way he always leaves a TV or other sound source on when he's alone just so he doesn't have to deal with the silence still breaks my heart, especially after the most recent chapters.

The fact that he was the only survivor of this rift made his habit of taking responsibility for everything worse, especially since he was the direct cause of the rift's class change. I like how this PTSD didn't just disappear out of nowhere.

The West Sea Rift was and still is a sensitive topic for him (especially now that he's recovered his memories and the origin of the monsters there has been revealed).

[collapse]

Male Lead: Lee Sayoung isn't as much of a puppy-like ML as some reviews claim him to be. Sure, he gives some exceptions that he wouldn't give to other people, but he has disagreements with Euijae and knows how to criticize him when necessary.

Since he's the brain of our couple, he has to stand his ground and turn to Euijae and tell him that it's necessary to think before act. So he's NOT that push over who'll say "oh hyung, you at least tried" or "make as many mistakes as you want, it doesn't matter, just do as you please", he is that type who goes for "your brain is just decoration??? How can you jump into a place without an escape plan??? You idiot" and I LOVE him for that.

This couple's interactions are the best. He's clingy, especially when he's mentally shaken, but when Euijae does something s*upid like that he knows how to reprimand him.

Comedy: I laughed so much with this novel. The internal dialogues and character interactions are wonderful, everything is so natural and dynamic. And the impeccable translation captures this humor extremely well.

Angst: I mean, we're talking about the

Anyway, despite everything, this novel has won a little place in my heart. The writing is fantastic and managed to engage me very well on the story. Super good!

honestly I thought this would be another generic story but shockingly the twists and turns the plot takes is super new. The reasoning behind everything in the story makes sense thematically and the characters are showing me the story instead of telling it. With a well developed plot and compelling characters anything less than 4 stars would be insulting.

This is probably one of the first novels after reading the manhwa I have read so far.

And to be honest it was so worth it, I love how this story is written and the flow. The dialogue as well; usually I'm not the type to read long and exhausting novels or books, but this is the first one I've read and it was amazing.

Sometimes I get confused with which character is who, and due to the unpopularity of this novel it's hard to look up the character on the internet... more>> since I usually get no results.

This is my first time reading bl hunter and I absolutely love this so much I am obsessed. I love the chemistry and interactions that eui jae and sa young have for each other. It's funny, full of action and yet there is so much heartwarming and loving moments.

from the start we can see how much eui jae means to sa young being the one who saved him and he shows his affection and love to eui jae endlessly but what I absolutely love was how the author wrote how much sa young meant to eui jae for being the one who has never stopped waiting for him 8 years and because of that, he finally escaped his loneliness and saw how much he loves sa young. When I read this, I was so touched and happy for eui jae.

I've been catching up with the novel now, so this is only my current review. Might change it later after it finished!

Basically, another OP hunter couple, which I actually like to be honest. For quite a while, the story was very interesting and hilarious, but that's only the beginning! The plot then getting deeper and thicker and more complicated and I even cried a few times because of some heavy scenes between MC and ML. I won't spoil the details, but the theme of this story is kind of remind... more>> me of ORV (iykyk) lol

If you feel discouraging from reading the novel because of some reviews, then trust me you have to try it for yourself first. The story is quite light in the beginning, but it would get more heavy and full of mysteries, which is pretty understandable since it has more than 200 chapters and still counting. Most of the touching & sad moments came from MC and ML, but other side characters got their own share of screentime & importance too. MC and ML's dynamics are pretty funny & interesting, especially since they got strong characteristics. We have MC, the strongest hunter who love to save people and the world and then ML, another strongest hunter who only care (and obsessed) about the MC. Sounds pretty classic, until you found out about the layers covering up their dark pasts.

One important thing though: THIS IS A SLOW BURN. So, if you think you can't handle reading 100+ chapters without any romantic actions, then I suggest you to re-think your decision to read it. Personally, I love it so far. Maybe one of the weak point that I found about this novel is how little the information we get about other hunter's skills. To be honest, I only know the skill of our MC, ML, and like 5-6 side characters, despite the high number of hunter we encountered throughout the story. <<less

I started it only 2 days ago and have been obsessed with it ever since. I've recently gotten caught up with GHG and decided to start reading this, and it is exceptional. It seems like a regular slice of life comedy from the beginning, but delves deeper into the mystery and intrigue of the universe it's set in. There's even some angst and tragedy slipped in. It is well written and the plot is interesting. The story took on its own unique form despite having the same tropes as many... more>> others.

Additionally, Mentoltrans has somehow portrayed the comedic elements perfectly. There are a lot of witty remarks and quips that I'm so glad didn't get lost in translation. They are a great and dedicated translator that has done amazingly with this novel.

Interactions between characters don't feel forced or cringy. They also don't seem to be mischaracterized by their dialogue or actions. There may be some MINOR exceptions to this (ex, characters feeling a little flat at times and acting only to advance the plot) but I dont have a big issue with it because it doesnt happen regularly.

Spoiler

I like how the author layed out the time regression from the very beginning of the story with seemingly such a small detail. I had barely even payed attention to the watch that CEJ gave to the grandma. The realization had my jaw dropped. The reveal of the different timelines was a bit random but not unwelcome. At the beginning, it was a bit confusing but it was easy to understand after all the details were laid out.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Last, just a very small detail I noticed, , what happened to CEJ's poker face trait?? He uses it consistently at the beginning of the story but after part 1 it seems to have been forgotten? Maybe I missed a detail but the author recently put emphasis on the fact that his face is easy to read and such but doesnt that ability combat that entirely? Does he just not use it anymore because of LSY?

[collapse]

Essentially, it's a great read and I would definitely recommend. To be frank, it's not THE BEST novel that I've read, but it's really good nonetheless, earning it a 4/5 stars. <<less

Are you exhausted from reading stories where the translator’s word choice is so off that it feels like you’re missing most of the (intended) comedy? Do you see scenarios that should probably get a literal laugh out loud but due to the horrendous grammar and the translator’s inability to use basic godd*mn reading comprehension of who’s who in a conversation, all you can manage is a little “heh” in your mind which fades faster than dopamine at an ADHD convention?

Well, do I have the story for you!

I’m only on... more>> chapter 56 and my sides hurt. I’ve laughed multiple times to the point of tears. Choked on my tea twice (drinking or eating while reading is henceforth banned). The overarching standard rift/gate catastrophe in the story is, y’know, honestly after reading a bazillion similar manhwa who tf cares, but with the little moments, observations, and deadpan humor in this story, omg, it’s fantastic. And of course, like everyone else has said, that’s because the translation from Mentoltrans is just chef’s kiss, seriously. Like a breath of fresh f*ckin’ air, I swear.

If you’ve ever had a moment where you side-eyed someone, even a perfect stranger, to silently ask “wtf???” and that person already met your eyes with a “I dunno, don’t ask me!!!”, and that bonded and solidified your strange relationship even further in hilarity even though neither of you ever spoke of it again because you didn’t need to... you’re gonna love this story. It’s that kinda humor but better, and the translation gets it across perfectly. Happy reading! <<less

This is the most complex manhwa I've ever read, the characters plays a big part of their role and it fits them so well! It gives me the combination of Omniscient Reader Viewpoint And Heaven's Official Blessing. I'm really disappointed about the low ratings people rated, but I think that's because people have different tastes and perspectives. And I understand that but I hope they would understand better.. But anyway.. This is the novel I've been looking for! The genre is what I've been wanting for so long.. The characters... more>> are so cute! The multiple timelines.. I love them so much ackk and love is always forever with them, I hope they have a happy ending ♥️. So glad it already had a manhwa adaption and the art style is so good !

I really don't understand why people think the MC's personality was bland, for me, I think what he did was realistic, since he kept disappearing which is not his fault but encountered numerous conflicts and hardships, I totally understand why he wanted to live quietly like normal civilians, and as for the ML, he's also really complex, he's pretty and funny which makes the story more interesting, ackk.. I hope people would love this novel like I do.. This novel holds a special place in my heart lmaolmao. I read the manhwa first which I understand the story more, so I recommend reading the manhwa first since it only has short chapters still but yet still worth it!

You gotta sort it out while reading the first chapters if you decided to read the novel first though, but either way, please understand the story and characters better.. This is for all those who thinks the novel was bad 💔.

Although I might agree there are some plot holes and character development that are Abit missing to the story which I think the author should focus about. But overall, I really recommend this, it's really an interesting story for me and how the author goes with flow. (◕ᴗ◕✿) <<less

First, I'm so sorry if this can't be read properly bc of my rough English.

I usually don't do this kind of thing but I'm desperate, I just find out the adaptation of the novel as a manhwa and it immediately caught my attention so I start reading the novel on another site (after an exhausting search) I'm not even that good at english but is aghhh.

And now reading the reviews and comments I just found out that the translator account it was deleted and the other person who translates it... more>> has only 65 chapters for free, if you know where I can continue reading please tell me I will be so grateful.

Now, about the story.

I know it will sound ambiguous and unoriginal but I really like this (From what I have read), something that makes me feel a little uncomfortable with the latest novels/books in general is the excessive amount of +18 scenes in everything (not judging, I read some of them too) but this is soooo slow burn that I love it, they don't even consider each other as something else for now, and that's fine. <<less
