Monochrome was the name of an idol group in a game I used to play. A five-member boy group that I had neglected after only focusing on making money.

‘What is this? The album title is ?!’

Seeing that the random album name I had entered out of laziness had taken a spot in their discography, I pulled my hair in frustration again. Not only did I have to recover the mess I made over 5 years in just 2 years, but I also had to elevate them to the top. I felt like crying. I’m not even in the entertainment industry; I’m just a gamer.

I'm not sure if this type of idol sub-genre is already done, but this is first time experiencing it and I enjoyed it to a high degree. Instead of being forced to be an idol-or-die for the X time, MC transmigrated to the game world, now in charge of an idol group that she made and handled badly in a game, and she must bring them to the top or never be returned to the real world.

What's different in this is that the contrived taste of rewarded stats isn't here... more>> (at least up to chapter 25). Quite frankly, succeeding in missions from the 'system' to gain "stats" and "abilities" to get some deus ex machina later on is something I don't enjoy. MC instead has a system that shows immediate previews and real-time stats. For example, showing how the idols will look by styling them and she judges whether it looks good (like character customization in RPGs), and stats on fans being interested/popularity index.

The idol group Monochrome made by the MC released similar tracks with almost 0 image change throughout 5 in-game years, and that really kind of hit me. If you ever read the KR idol genres, those MCs usually have to perform superbly to knock down their competition. But this time, the MC here sort of forced the boys here to stagnate for 5 years (and even the trainees are not spared). This actually seems to be just as bad as the real-world. I've watched a youtube video about female idols disbanding due to the lack of interest; they had to manage their image for years and are paid poorly before retiring to pursue a normal career, and the company managing them is tr*shy too.

If you read this novel and don't understand why the MC is always so apologetic about her idol group that has now become real, this is the reason. She knows that she messed up other people's lives big time. By fixing things and bringing them back to pure success with minimal game/system elements is going to be some major entertainment. The other characters' POVs and reactions to MC's decisions are also top-notch.

Highly recommended, 4.8 stars.

PS: I think there's no romance in this story, at least between the idols and MC. <<less
