The Imperial Handbook to Raising Mushrooms

Description

Lin Ling is a little mushroom spirit growing on the beam of the Imperial study, and every day, he watches the tyrant’s daily routine—confiscating property, exile, and executing the nine clans.

The little mushroom has no particular opinion about this, except that the small flower pot he uses to bask in the moonlight always gets innocently implicated, along with memorials that are smashed to the ground.

So, he enters the tyrant’s dreams daily to complain, and the tyrant gives him a new flower pot in return.

Lin Ling was on the beam, looking at his newly acquired flower pot, and was happily imagining moving in when the tyrant got angry again.

The moment the tyrant raised his hand, Lin Ling immediately and nervously whispered, “When you get angry and start smashing things later, please don’t break my new flower pot again, okay?”

The hall instantly fell silent, and under everyone’s gaze, the tyrant turned around and moved the flower pot to a different location.

The ministers, who trembled in fear and dared not take another glance, belatedly realized that the ruthless emperor was also learning how to take care of a soft, small mushroom.

Loved this, overall simple, cute, and unproblematic. A nice short red about a little mushroom with a soft heart who gives the emperor who's forced to put up a strong front to be a leader for a chance to breathe and allow his heart to soften.

They're seamlessly made for each other in the way that

MC is naive but eager to understand more about how the world works, as well as eager to get to know the ML on a deeper level. He tries his best to understand both what's said and what isn't, even if he misses the point sometimes, always keeping his belief that ML is a good person at heart.

ML is moved by MC's soft heart and native mind. He thinks of himself as a bad person, having done bad things, but wants to protect both MC and the view MC has of him. He's aware of the power he hold over MC to break him, but despite his unwanted thoughts and actions maybe a bit too far, he never let's it get to MC.

ML has had the expected tough past of an upcoming emperor with exposure to violence and usage of it. He feels that he's a bad person because he kills, but MC doesn't analyze it in a complex way and sees it simply as that punishing someone who's done something wrong is does not automatically make someone a bad person. ML can't hesitates to take MC's pure hand in his blood stained ones, but MC is not concerned witnessing spilled blood, but by ML feeling sad as a consequence of it. ML's afraid of scaring MC, but ML truly doesn't understand of think that he has anything to be scared about. Although MC wanted him to stay so desperately that he came up with options to trap him, he never followed through and that says everything there is to know about his character. He also clearly communicates it to MC after reuniting, he did it because of love and didn't follow through because of the same love.

Rather than wanting MC to stay, ML wants MC to want to stay - clear difference. In the end, the option is up to MC. It's strongly felt how much ML doesn't want ML to leave, a bittersweet feeling that ML could' be let go of his grasp in any moment of he just decided to. In the beginning, MC didn't underhand why talking about leaving, or showing that he could leave without any warning or a chance to say goodbye, would be hurtful to MC. MC has never wanted to hurt ML, rather he wants to understand ML so he avoid hurting him.

The letter not being delivered, ML waiting for days after thinking MC happily let him follow him and skip away to never seem him again after saying goodbye, is exactly the type of angst I love. Knowing everything will be fine, misunderstandings that are cleared up by healthy communication.

[collapse]

ML treats MC like a treasure and MC helps ML heal without him even knowing. The relationship is super healthy and none of them would do anything to intentionally hurt the other one.

Honestly started reading this because of the word "Mushroom", which reminded me of one of my favorite stories "Little Mushroom". MC's personality is a bit similar to An Zhe from "Little Mushroom", and he's a mushroom to, so if I had a nickel for every... (you get it), but the ML's are not really comparable. I expected a similar feel, but because this story is much less stressful and the plot is not similar at all nothing felt like reading a copy. It has its own charm and I love it! <<less

Translator here. It's my first time, so please be kind lmao. Anyways, this is a really cute short story about a new emperor and a little mushroom growing on a beam in his bedroom. That's pretty much it.

It's a part of a short story series by the author featuring the same characters - Lin Ling (uke) and Shi Changyuan (seme) - in different roles.

3 stars: A cute, short, and somewhat shallow novel about a s*upid and naïve (not the same thing, even allowing for species/spirit differences the shou is pretty dumb) mushroom spirit and the aloof emperor who at first tolerates and quickly falls in possessive love with him and must navigate the frustrating road to getting the clueless shou to recognize and reciprocate his feelings. I specifically say "shallow" because even for a short fluff novel, the characters feel shallow and generic while (at least on the emperor's side) emotions develop almost... more>> instantly based on almost nothing; I ended up feeling like there were missed opportunities for a bit of actual character development, over and over again. The emperor is seen by some as a tyrant and has a moderately bad temper in the beginning, but by BL-emperor standards he's not particularly bloodthirsty or calculating even if he is used to court intrigue and assassination attempts. The translation is good (I read the CG version), it's easy to read and flows well.

This was going to be 3.5-4 stars until about halfway through the story, when the emperor went from "generic and typical but okay for this kind of story" to "wow what an a*shole". It's a bit like finding a razor blade in your cotton candy—I wasn't expecting that kind of edge in this kind of fluff.

Spoiler

When the mushroom spirit innocently reveals that he's still intent on eventually leaving the palace (and therefore the emperor) for a mountain wilderness where he can cultivate, the emperor steals blood from him while he's asleep and goes to a priest to use magic to secretly bind the mushroom to him in chapter 18. The priest gives him three options: A spell that will bind the mushroom to within 100 steps of the emperor, a spell that traps the mushroom inside a magical artifact and controls him, or a spell that links the emperor's mind to the mushroom so no matter what the mushroom does or where he goes, the emperor knows everything.

And I'm just like, WOW. Did not expect this story to go that dark. Mind you, I think I was just personally weirded out here, and other readers may not find it particularly dark, especially if you're reading on the fly and don't think too much about it.

Which spell he chooses remains a mystery until chapter 22, where it seems like he chose to have the priest make one of the spells that keeps the mushroom near to him—however, the spell was kept in reserve for him to use if he felt like the mushroom was going to actually leave him, rather than being implemented on the spot.

Ultimately, if reluctantly, he decides not to use the spell and grudgingly lets the mushroom go off to cultivate. But he doesn't get rid of the spell either.

Then in chapter 28, it's revealed that actually the emperor had the priest make him all three spells and he was going to use all of them on the mushroom. WTF. The emperor actually confesses this to the mushroom sometime after they confirm their feelings for each other and were planning their marriage ceremony, wherein the emperor takes the mushroom to the artificial forest-garden in the palace that he had built specifically to imprison the mushroom after using the spells on him and confesses about the monk and spells and his original dark intentions for creating this lovely faux-wilderness in the middle of the palace.

The mushroom, because he is both naïve and s*upid although the story is trying its hardest to portray him as innocent, then tells the emperor: "'I think everyone occasionally has a few negative thoughts, but just having those thoughts doesn't make someone a bad person. Sometimes I also think about doing bad things, but I'm still a good mushroom.'" (Chapter 28)

Like, okay, look, that's all very true and very wise and sensible on its own. But this guy stole blood from you while you were sleeping, had a priest make him three separate spells to ens*ave and bind you to him, and built a prison in which to keep you near to him for his own convenience. That is a hell of a lot more than having "a few negative thoughts". Those are explicit and concrete actions he took toward a terrible purpose, and I don't really think you should be giving him credit for not taking the last step to fulfill said terrible purpose and excusing his prior actions. And no, being like "wow but it's such a big and beautiful prison crafted for me just the way I like it, I'm totally going to live here in the future, you were so thoughtful in crafting this prison for me!" doesn't make it any better.

Incidentally, as far as I recall, the story never mentions the emperor actually getting rid of those spells. I guess it's supposed to be implied that he did because he doesn't need them anymore, between the mushroom totally excusing/forgiving him and telling him they'll always be together forever no matter what. But the fact that the story doesn't mention discarding the spells is kind of weird and makes me be like, Hmm, even though I know it's probably just an oversight by the author or an oversight by me missing a one-liner somewhere.

Man, it was going pretty cute up until that point. Color me disappointed. I was enjoying the cliché-but-still-cute dynamic when this happened, and it apparently crossed the line for me. In a story with a toxic romance or yandere ML or the like, I wouldn't bat an eye, but I wasn't expecting this in my fluff and so found it particularly jarring and off-putting. It was also kind out of nowhere because the ML didn't seem like he'd go that far, as his character until then had been generically predictable, like he clearly didn't want the mushroom to leave and was doing his best to persuade and tempt him not to, but honestly I thought the worst he'd do would be to just straight order the mushroom not to leave or threaten to smash his flowerpot again, not plan to ens*ave and imprison him.

I think I wouldn't have gotten such a bad taste in my mouth if the emperor had ONLY gone to the monk and asked about spell options to keep the mushroom with him, and didn't take the mushroom's blood and have the spells made; the story could have still been ambiguous about whether he had chosen a spell, and the much-less-problematic reveal could have been, "I asked a monk about magical ways to keep you with me and he gave me these options, and I admit I was tempted, but I refused them all because I wanted you to be free to make your own choices." Like, if it had just been him having thoughts and exploring shady options without taking concrete action, I wouldn't have found it so off-putting. Even making the prison-garden would have been fine since the story kind of styled it like he was crafting a forest-space to entice the mushroom to stay, only to later have him explicitly state, nah, I was gonna lock you up in there.

[collapse]

There's not much plot as it's all romance with the mushroom shou getting enticed into staying at the palace by the emperor and innocently learning the ways and mores of human life (with limited success, he remains dumb as a brick throughout the story). The emperor realizes how foolish and innocent the shou is and doesn't hesitate to use that to his own advantage although since this is a fluff story, it's nothing hardcore manipulative or bad, it's more along the lines of declaring the mushroom is one of his secret guards so he has an excuse to always be nearby or tricking him into learning how to read by insinuating he'll be regarded as ignorant by others.

The story doesn't end with confession though. It continues after that point with more fluff with the mushroom realizing he doesn't know much about love, using as reference his assorted "storybooks" and "novels" of, ahem, certain genres as given to him by meddlesome side characters, and occasionally being stubborn or rebellious toward the emperor gong, who continues to be a mix of patient, frustrated, and sometimes a bit pushy (which the mushroom is often too dumb to pick up on).

I will say the story lost some steam for me after the confession, like, it was cute for a while but became kind of boring because there was no further real plot, tension, conflict, or interest to buoy up the increasingly insubstantial fluff and very generic comedy of innocent incredibly dumb shou x (im) patient gong. Almost all of the remaining chapters after the confession build up toward a wedding that's barely described in the final chapter and after a vaguely PG13 bedroom scene, the story promptly ends.

Between the weird dark aspect and the too-long winding down of the story, I ended up knocking the story down to 3 stars. It's a nice bit of simple fun let down by a few big flaws (and honestly, I didn't like the shou that much by the end, even for a mushroom he just had too few brain cells for me to continue finding him cute as the story went on).

Still, if you like fluff and want to read a quick story that has no real complications or drama and has a comedic tone, this novel may be a good choice. <<less

I love how the ML wants to keep MC all to himself but he never really trapped MC, he respected MC’s choices and I love that about him

The MC

  • Innocent, gullible, 'the frog mushroom that gets boiled in warm water'
  • Illiterate, can't even spell his own name but he's a quick learner (for a mushroom..)
  • Pampered and spoiled and doesn't even realize it
  • Reads fanfiction to broaden his mind (relatable)
The ML

  • Schemes, bribes, coaxes his way to a happily wedded life and doesn't feel guilty about it at all
  • Overworked, is NOT happy about it and makes it everyone's problem
  • You know you're the most powerful man in the country when you want to marry a mushroom spirit and everyone is like OK 👌
  • Thinks fanfiction is corrupting the MC (he's right)

➺ 4.5/5 🌟

This short novel is such an adorable, sweet and wholesome read!

The MC is a naive, innocent little mushroom spirit who has such a literal take in everything, but not in an annoying way. He's so cute and precious that I just want to pick him up and put him in my pocket! The ML is known to everyone as a tyrant who, whenever gets angry, has a habit of smashing things and unfortunately destroying the little mushroom's little flowerpot. And the constant destruction of the little flower plot... more>> is the reason why everything started.

This is just a fun read, full of fluff and has very low stakes. The ML is such a gentle and doting lover to the MC, in contrast to his reputation of being cruel and ruthless. I just loved how he's so patient with the MC and he's really good at coaxing. It's also fun to see an MC who is almost a blank slate. He learned not from experience but from the romance storybook he always loved to read. He's such a cute cinnamon roll who's very straightforward when liking or hating something, but can easily be led by the ML. Their dynamic is just so lovable and sweet. <<less

Cute, simple and fluffy read. If you're into a naive, innocent MC paired with a powerful ML who dotes on MC and respects their freedom, this novel is for you. There's barely any conflicts and is low key / smooth in sorting out their relationship (spirit x human).

Three star rating since I didn't feel emotionally inclined to any of the characters.
Spoiler

As per the intro, MC is a mushroom spirit who somehow ends up in the palace. He wants to move to the mountains and hence the flowerpot. But ML broke it so MC goes into ML's dream to confront him. When he enters ML's dream, it's more like a nightmare. MC changes the nightmare into a dream, which helps ML to get much needed rest.

ML becomes interested in MC. MC promises to leave a mushroom for ML to improve his dreams. In the process of growing this mushroom, ML becomes more attached to MC. He finds ways to convince ML to stay in the palace.

In the end, ML achieves his goal and marries MC as his empress.

So perfect. Enjoyed every moment. Ended too soon. Healed my heart for real.

The ML is sooo soft and patient towards the MC, which has been a breath of fresh air. Ling Ling and his husband will stay together happily forever. I can't believe this is the only work from the author: ( (I would love to read more from them. I'm actually mad at myself for finishing it too quick.

I'm torn between feeling grateful I found this gem and regretful for reading it. Because all I want to do now is forget everything and reread it again and again like it's the first time😭😭😭😭

It's the sweetest short story ever. Like it has no business being this sweet. There's no beating around the bush, unnecessary misunderstanding and annoying third parties whose whole life purpose is to prevent couples from getting together and be happy.

The MC is a lil slow in the feeling's department which is understandable but you don't get... more>> frustrated by it. Once he realised his feelings for the ml, he don't run, hide or be in denial about it.

The ML has a few dark thoughts here and there and by that, I meant just about two or less instances where he just thought about it but never ever act on it at all. The MC do find out about those thoughts and genuinely don't care about it. Overall, with how the story is written I think almost everyone can agree with me that he's flag is very green with no hint of red in it at all.

Do I wish some things could be more fleshed out and the story could be longer, yes I do wish for that... But I do think the beauty of this story also lies in the fact that it's a short story. It doesn't drag out unnecessarily and it's short and sweet.

I'm the type of person who can't reread or rewatch any type of media after experiencing them once, but I'll definitely 100% say for sure I'll have no problem rereading this story again.

To anyone who is reading this review... What are you doing, don't hesitate anymore and go read it!!!!❤️ <<less

Super cute little story. Surprisingly not braindead and very likeable characters.

There are some parts that were especially fun in my opinion, when the little mushroom tells about his own story and the ML realizes how the mushroom impacted his life for a long time already. Like "oh, that's the reason the roof leaked " or "ah, everyone thought the person went crazy, but it seems he was poisoned by the mushroom ". I did like that, it gave to story more depth.

I would recommend to read this little novel.... more>> It's short, sweet and fun. <<less

It's Absolutely Precious, Cute, Lovely novel and Absolutely the Best Short novel!!!

Our MC is Naive and Innocent but that's what make him so Lovable and Cute and also the way to make their relationship happen smooth with no actual drama misunderstanding whatsoever.

There's a slight miscommunication, but it's more Blink and you missed it.

... more>> Drama Free. Absolutely Precious!!! Love how everyone was Supportive with their relationship.

Our ML is, while being a Tyrant, but also absolutely a Wise Ruler who respected by the people around him. So except him being slightly Possessive with dark past, he's such a Good person and Doting Caring Lover.

Love that beside MC, we get to see other spirits, and ML also respect the spirits like they're MC's family.

This novel is truly a Healing Relaxing Sweet Heartwarming novel. So Nice and just Sooooooo Gooooood!!!

All in all I TRULY ABSOLUTELY LOVING THIS NOVEL WITH ALL MY ETERNAL LOVE AND HEART FOR ETERNITY AND BEYOND IN ANY UNIVERSES!!! <<less

I was really looking forward to this getting translated and I binge-read it once the chapters stacked up!

Huge shoutout to the translation team for the amazing work and speedy delivery! @Whimsical Reads

The story's great for its length, definitely keeps you engaged and is super sweet.

... more>> I just wish we could've delved a bit more into how the characters fell for each other; it felt a little rushed. Also, the side characters, like the forest spirits, could have used more spotlight.

It seems like the author was mainly focused on getting the main couple together and serving up that relationship bliss, which I totally appreciate. But with such delightful characters, I can't help but think we could have had a truly memorable, well-rounded short story. Hope to see more depth next time!

And I'd say the story's more like a 4.5 to 4.7, but since there's not enough backstory and their romance needed a bit more substance, I rounded it down. But it's definitely a solid 5 stars for a fun, super cute read!

Spoiler

I didn't like how the s*xual (implied) scene came across as more forceful at the end. I always feel uneasy when a character insists on something s*xual when the other person isn't interested, is complaining, or is too tired. I wish they had chosen a different direction. It's a short moment that most people might not mind, but it made me slightly uncomfortable.

It's a pretty cute story, and all straight forward. It's short so might as well be good for a one day read, though there's something lacking in here that I can't pinpoint. It's good, but not enough I guess.

It's a simple story of a naive, cute, shou, and a domineering good tyrant... well, it's a fluffy read! but a bit boring so I suggest that you read it if you're into something cute!!

This was such a sweet tale of a spirit mushroom and a human emperor.

I love that the emperor is such huge green flag.

Although it is a bit clichè with a dense protagonist and an intelligent male lead this was so sweet it gave me tooth ache. I just love how the male lead teases the protagonist and when he showers the protagonist with affection through gifts.

Their wedding was so great that it became legendary LOL.
