Haha, Eliza? A young girl like her wouldn’t bother with an old man like me, right?

Brand is one of the captains of the Guard, responsible for maintaining peace in the city of Torheim. Skilled with a sword and caring toward others, he is loved by the townsfolk and deeply trusted by his subordinates. His colleague Eliza also likes Brand—and in this case, “like” includes romantic feelings. However, up until now, she’s been too concerned about whether she’s a good match for the popular Brand to confess her feelings to him.

Enter Beatrice, the daughter of a prominent noble family, who arrives to take up the post of Guard Commander. From minor squabbles to major incidents, the Guard is thrown into a whirlwind of events, with love and resentment swirling in the background.

Will Eliza’s feelings come to fruition? Or will Beatrice overcome the gap in their social standings? What fate awaits the softhearted Guard Captain Brand?

This is a slice of life story. It's about the everyday life of a territory in the coutryside near the border of the kingdom.

The story is centered around the life and everyday tasks of the guards, especially Brand, the captain of the First squad, a nice and competent thirty-something-year-old (even though he keeps saying he's an old man, his age should be between 32 and 36 based on the few hints given here and there).

Brand is a really likeable character; as a matter of fact, he is so well liked... more>> by the citizens that a lot of women are after him, but the whole city is acting as judges in that fight (if you claim to be in love with him but are deemed not worthy, you are mocked).

For now there are three main competitors:

    • Eliza: a commoner from the orphanage, who met Brand when she was 8 and has had a crush on him ever since. She worked very hard to enter the guards and became the captain of the third squad. She is highly competent but unable to properly express her feelings to Brand. The whole world knows about her feelings except for Brand. In fact, because of the age gap (it should be around 10 years), Brand makes sure to never 'misinterpret' her actions and never think of her as a 'woman'.
    • Beatrice: the newly appointed commander of the guards, and a young noble from a powerful family. She doesn't have a good impression of Brand at first, thinking he's looking down on her, but soon starts relying on him more and more. She ends up falling for him. But the gap in status is so wide that she can't make a move right now, and obviously, it's totally impossible for Brand to even imagine her being in love with him. Also, she's not from around here, and Brand would never want to leave his hometown...
    • Shirley: a knight and the cousin of the commander of the knight corps. She's the sole heir to a viscounty. While not as beautiful as the other two, she has a refined personnality and she's a highly competent mage. She's been in love with Brand for a while, but didn't dare say anything until her cousin decided to help her in order to improve the relationship between the guards and the knights. Because of that, she's a late comer. She proposed to Brand through her cousin but Brand refused without even knowing who the other party was.
It's quite a nice and refreshing read. Though they are competiting, there's no catfight, and they are all making there moves in their own ways. Brand also has 'love rivals' (one of the captains of the guards is in love with Eliza, and Brand's second-in-command is in love with Shirley), but they actually respects Brand a lot and, even if they make plans to succeed in their love, they are no villains. They basically try to help Brand get promoted to match him with Beatrice...

Most chapters are not about the romance itself but about the guards missions: arresting criminals, investigating cases, helping the citizens. It's slow paced and nice. <<less
