The Legendary Mechanic

Description

What do you do when you wake up and find yourself inside the very game that you love?

What do you do when you realize you that you have not only become an NPC – you have even been thrown back in time to before the game even launched!

What will happen when our protagonist’s two realities coincide?

Han Xiao was a professional power leveler before his transmigration. Using his past life’s knowledge, Han Xiao sweeps through the universe as he prepares for the arrival of the players. This is definitely not your typical transmigration novel.

I don't think I need to point out the good things about this novel. But I'll say (rant) a little about all those negative reviews. Most of the 1* review here are because it doesn't have wish fulfilling and wet dream of countless pe*vert out there...... harem. and the other reason is he's not psychopath enough. They probably lack brain cells and doesn't care about plot. They probably want something like Solo leveling where plot is non-existent and protagonist is kill-all-no-matter-what. and yeah true it doesn't have romance. But actually... more>> romance and the protagonists character doesn't fit with each other. He's a pure mechanic who's love is machines. And I like that. Mechanic are supposed to be like that, unlike many other novel where despite their profession being something that requires you to be rational protagonists are emotional dumb*sses. And tbh the romance at the end felt too much forced. Which I don't really like but ig that's me. Anyway there aren't much plot armor... probably protagonist doesn't need one. Imo it's on par with LOTM and RI. But oh well..... <<less

This is one of the best novels I've read. The MC transmigrates and knows the future, but, unlike similar novels, the MC says what the last arc will be about (the final threat) at the beginning instead of keeping it a secret. Thus, there's a goal and, as events happen, there's a clear sense of progression towards it. The author also depicts every important event and every important characters' thoughts and plans, so I feel like I understand the everyone's motivations and am part of the story instead of an... more>> outsider trying to guess why some characters behave the way they do. Overall, this is an amazing novel that kept me interested from beginning to end and I would highly recommend it. <<less

Honestly the novel has a slow start that took some time to get me hooked, however once the main setting swapped from planet Aquamarine to the universe the story was far more interesting.

Its really good. Author has an amazing sense of pace which made the novel very engaging. Typically in long series like this there tends to be some dragged out events/chapters but Legendary mechanic doesnt have this. Prob the best novel with a vrmmorpg second chance that I’ve read, though thats not hard since most of the genre is hot tr*sh.

The Legendary Mechanic is the first and apparently the only novel written by Qi Peijia. I came to it after reading and liking the first 20 or so chapters of the manhua adapted from it. So, was I misguided ?

The protagonist, Han Xiao (a.k.a Zero, Black Phantom, latter Black Star), is not a nice person. He is shameless, thick-skined, grudge-holding (although not without reasons), greedy and wicked. But he is also courageous, extremely intelligent, a great strategist, tactician and politician, kind to his allies (current and prospective) and determined to... more>> reach his long terms (overly good) goals by any practical means, even if it involves working with former or potential enemies. He has a few quirks like being an excellent combat driver/pilot (though his nauseous and vomiting passengers might disagree). In short, he is the perfect anti-hero for the setting of the novel, as I can only compair him to Gargoyles' David Xanatos.

The rest of the cast goes from good to excellent. Whether they are friends or foes, they are never black or white, but all exist in shades of grey. Pretty much every named character has its own motivation, personality, merits, flaws and quirks, which conditions its interactions to the others, so that the shift of relationships (from helpful to neutral to antagonistic and vice-versa) feel logical and natural. The main antagonists (like the Germinal leader) have good reasons to be so, sometimes you are even sympathetic to them. Likewise, the allies (like Hila or Kasuyi) don't help Han Xiao out of sheer goodwill, but because their short or long terms goals converge with his or because they feel like them owe him. Also, the "players" characters are well made too, as the author clearly give them psychologies that humans would have if their were playing a MMO.

Oh yes, because the setting is a "video game"... although the world is shown the be real when the game is not on... well, I can't tell you what is really going on without MAJOR spoilers. Let's just says this: Han Xiao, great player/pusher in the "Galaxy" MMO, ends up in the universe of the game (in the body of a minor, unknown character), but into the past, even before the first closed beta, and the world is to him as real as his original's was. He then uses his knowledge of the game (both the setting and the system) in order to not only survive the various major crisis, but also strenghten himself and latter his faction (in fact, a good deal of his efforts are made in order to delay, counter and beat one of worst antagonist faction of the setting). In this sense, the background and the plot are those of a great space opera. But there are periods of time during which the players access the game, where they appear as quirky "Immortals" (for their ability to resurrect). Their actions and presence has major effects on the setting, as their avatars get the usual boons (leveling up) and drawbacks (level caps) one has when playing a MMORPG. Plus, the players have their lives around and outside the game, as it is visible in the game's forum. It results into a very original setting with two pretty different moods, as the players don't appear inside the "Galaxy" universe when it "updates", and it results in periods of time when the players aren't present (which are mere days for the MMO's users, but take months, years and even decades for Galaxy's inhabitants). On a side note, Qi Peijia's bias toward Chinese players is pretty obvious, but it does not go (too much) into obnoxious nationalism.

Han Xiao takes full advantage of his knowledge of the setting, system and players to move forward in a story rich in cliffhanger and plot twists, but it is no smooth sailing, since the protagonist knows a lot of the background of Galaxy (and makes the most of it), but he does not know everything (in fact he discovers numerous elements which surprise even him). Furthermore, his presence and interventions on an ever greater scale change the History of the setting from his time as a player, first in relatively minor ways but in the end in decisively, often for the better.

The power system is well made, divided into two parts: First, it is based on the five MMORPG basic main classes that when maxed open access to stronger evolved classes, as well as a number of various secondary classes which grants more specialized skills, but are less powerful. The five basic classes are Pugilists (Ki using martial artists), Mages (mana spellcasters), Psychics (mental power users), Espers (super-power users, think X-Men or Stormwatch) and Mechanics (machine makers and users). All of them are well-made but we only get a in-depth exposition of the Mechanic class and its evolutions, and only the pure Mechanic branch at that (the others, Mechanical Pugilist and Cannon Master, are set aside), which can be a letdown for the curious. Second, at various level caps, the character goes into a race evolution (influenced both by its inate genetics and external factors), which will raise its overall power, but also grants him a variety of skills depending on the selected evolution branch. The one taken by the protagonist is quite interesting and in fact opens a number of story hooks. Finally, Han Xiao status of transmigratted player offers him quite a few boons, including the player interface, quest prompt, leveling like a player and more (equally relevant) abilities, all of which are related to a major plot of the tale.

The translation is good, even very good, but not excellent, as there remain typos, mistranslations and confusions of words even in the last part of the novel. Still, it does not impair the reader understanding of the plot.

So, no, I was not misguided. With an excellent main character, an equally awesome cast, a great setting and a very good but incomplete power system, all in the service of a wonderful story generously sprinkled with a healthty dose of good (adult) humor and irony, The Legendary Mechanic is one of the best space opera/MMO novel I've read. Qi Peijia was able to perfectly mix the two genres into a delectable adventure which will keep you on edge until the last chapter. Its only remarkable flaws are the "incomplete" power system and a translation which never breaks into the excellence territory. My final verdict is a 9 out of 10, and a 10 out of 10 if the translation is ever corrected. If the author can keep the same level of quality in his future works, I'll read them with pleasure.

Thanks to Qi Peijia for writing this novel and to chickenpau, Chocolion, AtlasStudios and Chuchutrain for translating it. <<less

Overall story was really good, I definitely enjoyed the vast majority of it. It does get super political at around the 75% mark and it pretty much maintains till near the end, although it gets less "in your face" after a while. And when I say political, I don't mean current event wise, more Star Wars pre-sequel Trade Federation. The political stuff was probably my biggest gripe, just because it very abruptly slows down the flow of the story. And the author really likes to go into detail about a... more>> lot of stuff, so you kind of end up with some wall of text chapters all about political maneuvering and possible/actual consequences, etc.

The biggest thing about the story is that it's constantly evolving and does not like to stay in the same place for long. If you're in the early chapters, buckle up, you're definitely in for long multi-scenic ride with very few pit stops. There's also just a ton of characters. A lot of them you can kind of ignore because they become unimportant, but since the story revolves completely around Black Star, even a lot of the main characters get forgotten once their related arcs are done. The author rotates a lot of them from time to time for call back purposes, but the majority of them are only relevant between certain points in the story. You definitely get the sense about who the author likes very early on.

For me, the charm revolved around Black Star being a shameless ass hole to everyone, but still mostly being a decent dude that really only did stuff for the benefits. I enjoyed his struggle to the top and enjoyed him discovering how to ab*se his NPC abilities, and I will definitely miss reading this every day. Guess there's always the Manhua, which should be finished in the next 40 years. 10/10 recommend if you have a massive amount of time on your hands. I'm recalling stuff from earlier on that feels like it was from a completely different story, since it feels like I read it so long ago.

Spoiler

Also, everything about the finale chapters was pretty well done, except for actual finale chapter. A lot of authors tend to frame the ending through the eyes of an unknown third party to kind of act like a proxy for the audience, which... I'm not too big a fan of, but it can work sometimes. This was definitely not one of those times. One was a set of unnamed characters that got way too much screen time when all they really did was establish the event as "the witness." The second, which made more sense, was a familiar character reveal that wouldn't have been my first choice, but definitely made sense in context. I wouldn't have minded the first one so much if it wasn't like a third of the chapter. It was equivalent to a group of people talking on a fishing boat about sliiiiiiightly related (mostly for the sake of fan service) gibberish for a half hour, then godzilla's foot enters the frame for a second. It kind of made the ending feel like there should've been an epilogue, or even just a couple extra paragraphs. There were a lot of half pay-off's set up that didn't quite fully mature.

[collapse]

Spoiler

What kind of bullsh*t is asking to have a kid with Ames for 300 chapters, then the actual kid only gets a quick nod in the final chapter with zero interaction from Black Star. Didn't even mention her name, that's lazy writing and a missed opportunity for a good call back right at the end. Instead, we got "Kabang Civilization."

This novel is fun to read and is fast pace which I like. It has all the fun of isekai stuff, leveling up, fantasy and sci-fi, and galaxy size scale. The ending was satisfying. The late and casual romance is very justify per the MC circumstances and uncertainties. No harem, thankfully.

So, after reading this novel for dozens of times, I finally decided to write a short review.

Firstly, the romance: In my opinion the MC only has a romantic relationship toward the end (the tag "Late Romance" already tells you about it), because he isn't one for casual relationships and he can't guarantee his, his partners and possible children's survival. Imagine if you fall in love in an environment where your partner could die anytime.

Second he doesn't know enough about the environment. He first learned about this place in an MMO,... more>> so I think he has the fear that everything around him are only soap bubbles, so he avoids getting emotionally invested in others, be it friendship or love. For this reasons he decides to see everything in the persperctive of benefits.

What's so good about this novel: You witness how the MC rewrites history. First you learn what happened in the 'before' and then you see how the MC twists the flow of history to his liking. At the beginning his influence is limited, but as he grows more influential and powerful, the butterfly flaps it's wings harder and harder. He starts with making things happen earlier and different, then makes some things happen greatly different. Later on he even crushes the frame, so that some things don't happen at all and the history from the 'before' is completely different. Truly, the butterfly effect.

About the nationalism in this novel: I doubt the author supports those values at all. There are tournaments among players, in which the Chinese are of course the best. However it stays limited to Chinese being superior in ingame tournaments and it doesn't touch politics. Those parts are often separate arcs you can just skim through without hindering your reading comprehension. Keep in mind that the Chinese government has the authority to ban authors' works and even imprision and execute them, if their works aren't to their 'liking'. I think those parts are just there keep himself save and ensure that his work doesn't get banned.

There are many instances in this novel where civilizations 'realize they are ants fighting on the ground' (in the author's words' and the author talks pretty often about nations being meaningless and how people stop thinking in terms of nations and only think in terms of species as a step in the development of civilizations. Later on the term 'nation' doesn't even get mentioned, except when talking about less developed civilizations.

He even talks about Earth and expresses through Han Xiao that us humans will extinguish ourselves through causing problems such as global warming and meaningsless squabbles. In sincerely doubt the author is a sucker for nationalism. <<less

The author seems unafraid to make the readers feel as lost as Han Xiao, who appears to have been transmigrated into the body of an NPC, in what will become a monumentally popular VRMMORPG. Forced to immediately become a Mechanic class to survive the mess he's found himself in; Han Xiao grinds, deceives, crafts and fights his way out of peril utilizing his future knowledge. Plus him being classified as an NPC plays a huge role when 'players' start arriving. But that also makes one question the very nature of... more>> the gameworld Han Xiao has found himself in, as he's able to manipulate so much about the game's intended storyline & player's actions, without a peep from the devs. As he rapidly accumulates wealth, knowledge, status, strength and military might. Becoming a huge influence on the galactic stage.

Yet it's not all good as there's a great deal of immature humour which constantly leaves me groaning and for an MC with 1, 000s in Intelligence and 1 point in Luck, he's honestly a bit too lucky at times.

In the end The Legendary Mechanic does well to not make the class as OP as a Sculptor or Blacksmith found in other popular WNs. There are obvious pros & cons (weak early game, strong late game) and it manages to have some of the most engaging duels, group brawls and galactic battles I've read in a long time and all within a fantasy sci-fi setting. The ending does over complicate things, when trying to explain the world, but overall I enjoyed reading this. <<less

Ohh well, I liked the story, from the initial development to the end it is seen that the author from the beginning knew how he was going to finish his work. One of the best novels in terms of the development of its story and characters, the only thing to criticize it would be that the MC did not go through difficult times since he almost never felt pressure from his enemies, the ending was great... totally taking a turn, than expected. The only bad thing for my taste would... more>> be that I don't end up as a harem. 4.6 / 5.0 😘🥰 (The beginning is somewhat lazy but it gets better as it progresses.) <<less

Totally terrific!!

No moment when you feel the story is stagnent, plot is awesome and even related to the real world and fiction has reasonable explanations. The whole story has many unexpected plot twists and the end is mind blowing. Though it could have used some more romance, especially for the MC, but overall a very good ride till the end.

I so wish there was a sequel

This novel almost falls into the same vein of quality as the LOM. The level of world building and the over arching plot becomes insanely good as the story progresses. Most of this won't be seen in the first few hundred chapters though as this is a sci-fi that progresses from the planetary level to the galactic level and the main character only finds out the secrets of the universe as he progresses in strength.

On the topic of nationalism, this story is an odd one. There are competitions between the... more>> 'players' where they have e-sports competitions, and in it the main character is biased towards the Chinese teams as he is Chinese, but this isn't really strange all things considered as most people cheer for their own teams in sports. Outside this there are points where the Chinese players clash with others such as europeans and americans and they are made to look bad, but where things get strange are in the later where the author seems to have some anti CCP sentiments. Minor spoilers for the later parts of the story ahead.
Spoiler

When the main character finds out about how the major civilizations treat supers once they have total control over them he decides to break away from government control and fight for freedom. This almost seems to be an underhanded way of pushing anti CCP sentiment without being obvious about it.

[collapse]

Finally, this story does have a proper ending with loose ends tied up, characters from early on not forgotten, and the MC and many others do get with someone. And the major mystery of why and how the main character ended up in the situation he did was solved. Definitely one of the best journeys I have been take on. <<less

This is a fine novel but considering the high rating it currently has (4.4), I was expecting better.

The main pro is that, somehow, it's almost original. Gotta agree with the synopsis that it's not your typical transmigration novel.

The main cons are... everything else... Okay not everything but a lot.

First, this is a litrpg (interface and menus and stat sheet and all that stuff). But this part is beyond awful. The system in this novel is needlessly complicated and neither most reader nor the author has the ability to actually keep... more>> track with it, as proved by the numerous inconsistency already present... (hard to say when it is translation error and author error though). Regardless, it is needlessly long, needlessly compicated and in true mostly irrelevant because the author will do whatever he wants regardless of the stats anyway. By chapter 100, I was skipping every litrpg-related stuff in the story, to both not waste brain cell on useless stuff and not to feel annoyed with the mistakes.

Secondly, the story... The story itself is OK but clearly lacks a proper goal except "let's be strong because why not". Pretty common problem in chinese novels, but at least most of them try to come up with an excuse for it ("need to save someone, but too weak!", "here is too dangerous, need to become stronger!", "need to prove myself in X tournament, need to be stronger!",...). This novel doesn't bother with excuses like that. MC will try to be stronger and repeatedly risk his live, motive be damned.

Third, the pace.... It is slow. Not slow in that nothing happens, but slow in that a lot of kinda useless stuff keeps happening. It's like quite a few mini-arc one after the other but few of them actually matter.

And last but not least, the elephant in the room (for me, not necessarily a problem for everyone) : the characters. Or more specifically, the interactions between characters.

To quote another review that say it in a very short way: "problem is that the main character has a lack of intrest in other characters. Makes the story very bland." which kinda nails my feeling on the problem, but I'll explain it in detail.

The MC is a NPC/Player (basically a cheat existence that gets most of the benefits from being a NPC and most of the benefits from being a player). The other NPCs are basically real human (arguably, much more humans than the players). However, better not thing of them as humans because the MC clearly doesn't. If you think of NPCs as humans, the MC will appear to you as the biggest piece of sh*t in history.

That alone is pretty bad in my opinion, but the real kicker happens when he interacts with players too. Because the MC considers himself a NPC now (ah!), he will also only treat players as tool to get stronger instead of people.

It's kinda hard to explain tbh, and it's not apparent at the beginning, but this is really bad for character interactions. In the end, he considers himself to be a great amazing person and treats everyone else as unfeeling tools to be used and discarded as will. Note that this is kinda different from an evil MC to me. I'll try to explain the difference in a spoiler by giving an example in the story.

Spoiler

MC was in a business relationship with NPC A. MC was crafting stuff, while NPC A sold the stuff to client. Those were expensive stuff and worked on a pre-order model (client give money to NPC A who gives money to MC who then craft stuff and give to NPC A who gives to client). All is well and good until the MC thinks he stayed there too long and he should go somewhere else to speed up his grow. So he just goes away and leave a message "hey, I'm going away ahah".

NPC A is of course enraged, because a lot of clients are still waiting their order... and they already payed... and the MC left with the money. To give an idea of how bad it is, some chapter later we learn that NPC A is now running and hiding for his life from debt collectors.

Now here is the different between an evil MC and the MC we have. An evil MC would have done what he did because he wanted the money. He would have purposefully left without giving back the money, knowing clearly what he was doing. The MC we have didn't even realize it was a problem. It's not that the MC is dumb though. He is smart. But to him, what happens to other NPC once he is done with them doesn't matter at all to him. He didn't even consider once what would happen to people here once he left (NPC A wasn't the only one hugely inconvenienced by his sudden disappearance).

Also worth noting that he didn't even need the extra money. Ironically, one of the things he never lack is money, he is filthy rich kinda, which further shows he didn't realize the little bit of extra mone he "stole" didn't matter at all.

Actually, this expands to lots of part of the story. He casually steal things so much while pretending to be a good person that it becomes kinda sickening.

I am not a big fan of LitRPG, but it was just enough fun to continue. The world-building is thin, but if you read it quickly and don't focus on details it's pretty entertaining. The MC *does* encounter some challenges, but he is strong enough and clever enough to overcome most of them pretty easily, with only rare times when he faces serious risk.

In order to emphasize how clever the MC is, his opposition is often rather dense, but it mostly works with the half-humorous tone of this novel.

The final... more>> explanation for the game universe is rather dense and a bit awkward, but it was foreshadowed fairly well. And, at least it gives meaning to the game universe, beyond "let's level up and have fun". <<less

Amazing story so far, but it does get repetivive... extremely repetitive. There's basically no character development and the MC continues to power up with knowledge of most things. It's too easy for him, thus ruining my experience.

Spoiler

In the later chapters, I do believe it's plotted for Ames, the Dragon "King" to have romance with the MC, and in later chapters (way into chapter 1300, I think) he begins fighting the World Tree (Organization?) I forgot the name but it was a colonization similar to the dynasty and federation.

Like what Tides said in his review, it is fun to read for the first few arcs then slowly it starts to lose it's charm. It is hard to care about other characters other than the MC because he doesn't care about them either.

It becomes a story about the MC just getting strong without much reason, there's no danger, no tension. You are just reading about him getting strong and just fking over NPCs who appear interesting at the start but most of them are just not expanded upon.

For me,... more>> it became boring to read slightly after he left the first planet, it is well written but the side characters aren't given much growth, it's all about the MC. The first planet arc is pretty good though so maybe give it a shot and see if it's your cup of tea. <<less

Story has started to get a little slow for me so I decided to read something else I have stockpiled and possibly come back to it.

One of the biggest issues I have with the story, and I’m starting to think it might just be me that has this happen is that all of the swear words have full stops between them. So crap becomes c.r.a.p, it really breaks the story up and makes it annoying to read.

The general storyline is pretty good and the MC is solid. Not a wet... more>> flannel like some novels. <<less
