The Male Protagonist Always Interrupts My Death Escape Progress Bar

Description

I was an NPC Passerby, and the system told me that my mission was very simple—

1. Become friends with the male protagonist.

2. Block a fatal blow for the male protagonist at critical juncture.

3. Die in the male protagonist’s arms, beautifully reciting pre-written lines, allowing him to gain power-ups amidst his grief and anger, thus enabling him to defeat stronger foes than himself.

The system said that my death would present a tear-jerking scene, after which I could retire.

I nodded, indicating that I fully understood everything.

Then I discovered that the greatest challenge of this quest wasn’t “becoming friends with the male lead” but rather “dying.”

Who could tell me why the speed at which the male protagonist unlocked his abilities was faster than the speed at which I recited my dying words?!

I hadn’t even fallen to the ground yet, and the earth-shattering boss had already been beaten to death by the rampaging male lead!

All I could do was hunker down and wait for my next opportunity to sacrifice myself, but…

Ahh, how did it come to this?! The male protagonist’s power-ups were far quicker than my own dying pace—there really weren’t any chances left for me!

“I absolutely will not allow anyone else to have the chance to harm you… absolutely.”

…Thank you, but seriously, there really isn’t any need to go so far for a mere “friend!” Why does saying this make the male protagonist look even more displeased?!

[Why don’t you check the tags?]

I looked—

And found that after the original “Youngster’s Passion,” another tag appeared: “Feast on Dog Food.”

I stared at it blankly.

What did that mean? How was I supposed to understand this?!

Speaking of, the latest round of “Character Popularity Voting” had unexpectedly landed on the same name as mine…

Wait, does that sound like me?!

Ah?

I really am just a passerby!

[Reading Notes:]

1. Urban Monster Setting, Transmigrating into a Comic. There will be some forum content, but not the main focus.

2. The system’s role is quite significant, and its comedic function is somewhat like that of a roast master.

3. Ability Possession, with a hint of supernatural elements, but should not be considered horror.

4. Pay little attention to the comments section; if you need to contact me about something important, please look at the column.

5. Not quick-transmigration, not quick-transmigration, really not quick-transmigration! I tagged it as transmigration, so don’t get mixed up, T_T

6. All city names used within this work are fictional, including Fuhai City and Qionghai City derived from the manga. Do not associate them with reality.

I didn't rate this because I dropped it after 2 chapters and here's why:

It was too wordy and yet nothing was being done. In those two chapters we were being told that she is so beautiful but she is tied to the passerby system, and how that's not fair, then some irrelevant things happen where she meets passebys. And I skimmed and saw we meet the ML by the end of chapter 3.

The writing style does not pull me. Nothing is happening. I am aware it's too rushed to judge... more>> by just 2 chapters but I was just bored and they weren't short.

This is why I didn't give a rating, because it's not fair after only 2 chapters. <<less

tl;dr - it's not perfect, but even with flaws, it gets full marks from me for being a charming, cute little story that had me smiling plenty (the adorable extra chapters are what tipped the scales for me).

It's a good length; long enough to get emotionally invested, but without dragging on endlessly. Also, 'black-bellied ML with a charming smile and the capability of mass destruction bottles up the destructive impulses and plays human for the girl he has a crush on' is an absolute guilty pleasure of mine and this... more>> story delivers.

While the FL absolutely displays the perennially frustrating stage 5 symptoms of 'dense FL syndrome' with regards to ML's feelings towards her for about 60 chapters, I found it marginally less annoying than usual for two reasons: 1) the dynamic between the two was enjoyable despite this (the FL has a personality I found kind of unique for the genre - she's neither a sunshine sweetheart nor a quick-thinking schemer, and I genuinely found her charming) and 2) the reactions of the side characters/forum post commentary of readers of the work she's transmigrated into tend to express relatable sentiments in those moments, turning them genuinely humorous.

I said it above, but I really like the dynamic between the ML & FL. They actually communicate with one another (... not that this stops them from sometimes misunderstanding one another's world, mostly comedically, but it's the effort that counts).

A few flaws - the first handful of chapters are a little confusing with the worldbuilding (there are basically 3 dimensions at play - the world/dimension of the story where special ability users fight supernatural threats, the world/dimension observing that story in the form of a comic they believe is purely fiction, and the dimension of the system/transmigration headquarters that sends deceased people from the second world as employees with missions into 'small worlds' like the first) Some early foreshadowing makes the overall direction pretty predictable, there are some minor plot holes, the editing can be inconsistent, and the side characters are a little flat sometimes, but they're still fleshed out enough to make the world feel a little more 'lived-in', and a couple of them I even ended up cheering for. Also forgiveable IMO. <<less

I have read the raws a long time ago, but this one is still one of my favorite romance novels.

The first 10 or so chapters might be confusing to get through for those who aren't aware of the setting, which is something akin to supernatural shenagians in the modern world but with extra stuff, it has tournaments and even a school and mafia with special ability users. The world building is seen through both the eyes of the MC and the "streamer audience" who see the happenings of their world... more>> through manhwa as a medium if I remember correctly. Man, I wish there were a manhwa for this too.

The MC is a quiet girl who doesn't understand love and is content to fade into the background. The first few chapters are definitely buttering her up to be an extremely beautiful character who works as a background character, but that can be ignored. I think she's very cute! Like a kuudere. She isn't sure at first about her position in this world, but she decides to grasp the ML's hand, and she pampers him in her own reserved, quiet way.

The ML is the protagonist of the novel, who is outwardly sunny and good but has his dark side (kinda scheming and some of his friends think he's sometimes a piece of sh*t who hides behind a smile), who desperately wants to grasp the MC who feels as if she would fade away if he isn't careful. He becomes like an overprotective mutt around her. His classmates and outsiders are so disgusted by how much he trails after her and how his metaphorical tail wags enthusiastically when she's present. He's the green flag kind of yandere, if that even makes sense.

Ah, I wish the author had more romance stories like this, I really love how they wrote this one. <<less

okay after binging this story for two full days I can say that it’s really good. First few chapters were a bit confusing, I felt like there wasn’t much of an introduction and it was a bit fast paced. Because of that, my expectations were kinda low, however TRUST the process and eventually it gets pretty good.

summarized here’s the things I liked about this novel:

- good balance between plot and romance

... more>> -cute MC and ML

-GOOD plot (even though a bit confusing bc of MTL)

-cute side characters

-ML is YANDERE ALERT 😱😱 (but still very respectful to fl)

the ending was good/ ok, she went back to the real world and there were extras of them in other universes. Even though I would’ve loved to see kids or something it was okay 👍🏻

overall I really suggest reading it teehee <<less
