She replaced her older sister to become the wife of her family’s long-time enemy. The moment she got into the bridal sedan chair, Xiao Qiao was prepared for a lifetime of loneliness. As she expected, Wei Shao didn’t go and fetch the bride and they got married in a hasty manner. The day after the wedding, he was going to send her away.

She initially thought they are likely to spend the rest of their life “treating each other with respect”, but they encountered setbacks one after another.

She was kidnapped, and he led troops to rescue her and slaughtered the enemy in anger.

She was framed by her mother-in-law, and he stepped forward to reprimand his mother and protect his wife.

“You really are a source of calamity.”

“To whom do I bring calamity?”

“To my heart.”

Caught up to all the chapters in 2 days and would be glad to reread. I love the MC, the plot, and the characters. Everyone is fleshed out and conflicts aren't dragged to make the story longer. Emotionally gripping and fantastic storyline, deserves a higher rating for sure

The Marquis is indeed NOT innocent!🤣🤣

It's heavily plot-based. We encounter political intrigue, war, violence, betrayal and most of all, the inherent patriarchy present in ancient Chinese setting. All of these only makes the situation of the leads unfair and acts as an obstacle to their road to happily-ever-after. To be honest, the novel was just this🤌🏻 close to a tragedy.

Xiao Qiao, the youngest daughter of the Qiao family of Yanzhou, is unparalleled beautiful. She transmigrates from modern times with the memories of the original Xiao Qiao's tragic previous life. So... more>> just like her peers, she embarks on the journey of reversing the fate of herself and the people around her.

Unfortunately for her, she is now in a war-torn era where the imperial dynasty is at its last leg with various warlords competing for the Supreme position. To protect her homeland, her uncle forces her to marry the only son of the Wei family, Wei Shao, the Marquis of Yan.

The problem, though, is that Wei Shao's father and elder brother hit the bucket in front of him in the battlefield because of Xiao Qiao's grandfather's betrayal. So there is already a family feud in place on the road to happiness.

On the other hand, Wei Shao, the male lead, is ruthless and cruel, ambitious, egotistical, often aggressive towards the FL. He is bent on exacting revenge on all those who harmed him and his family and ultimately unify the central plains.

Now, I admit that the romance in this novel may not be for everyone. If you want a doting ML whipped for the FL from the get-go or a healthy lighthearted romance, then this is definitely not for you. It is plot-heavy slow-burn romance where the female lead navigates through her hostile in-law family and the male lead gradually comes to truly love another person and be considerate of others, especially other than himself.

I definitely fell in love with the characters and their romance. I LOVED Xiao Qiao. Even in an frustrating situation like the one she was in, she was aware of her shortcomings but that did not stop her from using her advantages to work through and stand up for herself. She was in no way a doormat, she understood her situation, understood herself.

For Wei Shao, I didn't have much expectation, especially after reading the part of his previous life. He was an able conqueror for sure, but he didn't have any aura of a male lead. But his character development was *chef's kiss*😩😩🤌🏻🤌🏻

I went from being indifferent to falling in love with Wei Shao too. Especially his side stories were hilarious. Those complaining about him being harsh towards his wife, I just want to say,

1. Xiao Qiao was literally the spawn of his family's enemy. Because of her grandfather, he saw his father and brother die in front of him. His mother grieved for more than a decade. The whole Wei family could only rely on his old grandmother Mrs. Xu.

2. Do not forget, the FL may be a modern soul but Wei Shao was born and brought up in a patriarchal society where men can do whatever they want even having three wives and six concubines. He was a product of his time. To me personally, the most important was that he wasn't stuck as an egotistical pedantic from start to finish. But that he was capable of change! (Just so you know, Wei Shao was monogamous from the start in the current timeline).

Nobody changed Wei Shao., not even Xiao Qiao. He changed himself. Wei Shao became a better person for Xiao Qiao.

If we go by the standards of a stereotypical male lead, then Bi Zhi may be the only one who was in love with and doting towards Da Qiao in the whole novel.

Mrs. Xu was the real MVP, for sure!

Chen Rui was the biggest clown🤡🤡

I absolutely LOVE this novel. If you're into serious historical Chinese novels, don't be afraid of the low ratings. Give it a go

wow the angst really makes my heart dropped every single time. I can't get used to it, it's my weakness 😩

to our FL, girl, why must you hurt yourself like that over a past??? I hope she trust herself more, that she can do it, with the fact that she came from the modern era. I really didn't get the impression of that (except last part of the novel). Her thinking is just like of an ancient woman which makes me kinda irritated sometimes. Be selfish girl, you're too kind!!!... more>> It's not wrong to prioritize yourself.

the pros is the misunderstandings and schemes are quickly resolve (thank God!) everytime they fight I feel like there's a lump in my heart, sigh.

my heartbreak in this novel are Wei Yan and Liu Yan. I hope in another alternative universes they can be with our FL and have a happy ending.

i felt happy, got angry, and cried a lot reading this novel. Thank you for showing to me that love is really beautiful and it can make a person change for the better.

If u want a sweet romance focusing story, sorry to say but u better go away.. Or if u someone who doesn't have patience u also better to stay away from this novel, after read this I would like to make a statement that tge title is the conclusion of the story :) ... more>>
Spoiler

ML is a jerk if u saw him with modern glasses, but if u put down ur mind set and just let author leed you and follow them, ML and MC act is so in line with time setting, at the point when u can't fully blame ML or MC, but blame the fate that make them like that (but don't worry ML know his wrong, and apologies to MC oh but it was just at almost finished chp :) so be patience)

u may find flesh love not genuine love but, babe.. Love is form many things, it can't categories as degradation or lower than another form, plus.. Both of them gradually better, it such a shame we don't know more about MC previous life and it almost just became a shadow, although it necessary to had that setting. I personally rating it as 4.0 just bcs the ending and extras, in my opinion Author take MC as a female but we doesn't know more about the female part or her emotion, when reading this we focus more about wars about how ML solve his hate and vengeful habit for fl, then gradually they became true lovers-husband and wife with the same heart and mind, for romance the sweet it's just on the extra.. The way you need to get ut full of salt, it's gray <<less

Where do I even begin? This novel is definitely not for the light-hearted. If you're looking for a fluffy romance, this is not it. It's plot heavy and slow burn but when that spark started flying, oh boy, it was explosive. I love how complicated the male and female leads are. In some ways, the male lead will come off as unlikeable but as you come to know him and what he went through, you'll come to understand his actions and why he is such a conflicted character. That's how... more>> I'll describe him, conflicted.

As much as I've come to love Wei Shao, I'll say, the female lead is the star of this novel. In every way, she's just a weak woman. She cannot fight, she has no political power on her own, but she is also in every way, one of the strongest female leads I've read. She's very intelligent, intellectually and emotionally. She knows how to empathize and when to stand her ground. The entire novel, I was just rooting for her. <<less

The novel is well written, and well translated - I appreciate the combination of accurate translation mixed with a nice touch of the original language.

Usually, if I can choose I'd rather read more of the romantic than political (or warring, criminal, etc.) plot. This one is a nice balance between love and war, though the sheer number of characters, clans, regions, etc. Makes the grasping of the flow somewhat difficult, at times. The most important value of the novel for me is a life-like picture of the clashes between the... more>> personal, parners', families, clans' and national values, goals and actions.

In the end, from a feminist perspective, that was a time when women had no say whatsoever in almost anything
