Xu Wan became a widow right after her marriage, initially hoping to enjoy a carefree life as a Marquis’s wife.

A brilliant slice-of-life story with some politics. I think the FL Xu Wan is the deuteragonist and the main character should be the cute baby Zong Jincheng. They are both key characters in this novel! Most of the drama involves Zong Jincheng and the FL becomes a side character most of the time.

Basic storyline:

FL marries into the prominent rich Zong family but the man she is supposed to marry has been missing for 8 years. His son is a rebellious extremely naughty kid who causes chaos everyday. FL is very... more>> smart and before she transmigrated, she was a top student who often taught her younger siblings in the orphanage (author mentions her past occasionally but she is actually reincarnated in this era). So FL knows study tactics and methods to make the naughty boy study and become a top student. She will earn 100000 taels of gold if he becomes a top student.

So almost half of the novel is about FL's education techniques and how from one naughty boy, she now teaches about 5 kids. Its very fun because FL knows how to make them want to study. I don't find it boring too as the author will insert interesting topics for the kiddos to learn and the reader to read along.

Examples: FL makes the kids debate on topics about good and corrupt officials and why corrupt officials exist. Were they born bad or were there other circumstances?

While our baby MC Zong Jincheng is studying his way to the top, there are underlying political drama happening at the same time. It is written well by the author by giving hints and mysteries alongside baby ZJ learning more and growing up. As he becomes less rebellious/naughty, more people come into his life and we find out more about an overarching plot. This one is more spoilery.

Zong Jincheng is the child of the Emperor and Concubine Shu and is being protected under the Zong family. The Emperor actually poisoned the Crown Prince. There are other factions who are trying to overthrow the royal family as well. Zong Jincheng studying and learning so hard is for him to govern the nation at a young age. He becomes Emperor at 12 years of age.

Romance:

LOL. Non-existent for three quarters of the novel. Only lots of family focused scenes between FL and Zong Jincheng. FL only meets the ML at C295. However, once they meet - the romance is so sweet!!! FL is the calm beauty and ML is also the quiet stoic type. ML learns to express himself more to the FL. He liked her first.

I also really enjoyed the plot twist:

A pretty interesting novel imo cause I learn a lot too while reading about them. Making me want to read more about history haha. <<less

Read akknovel's translation to chapter 95, and MTL'd the rest, including the extra epilogue chapters.

Transmigrated FL marries into the Marquis mansion (the ML is MIA during war), and tames/educates his little heir. Positive slice-of-life with a bit of romance and politicking and fixing-the-kingdom vibes.

reborn, and works behind the scenes to avert the tragedies of everyone's deaths from his first life. He's quick to kill villains, and has loved the FL since his first life. It's a very happy ending.

I think all the reviews are from people who completed the entire novel, so here's the perspective of someone still reading it.

Summary: Xu Wan transmigrated into the body of a neglected eldest legitimate daughter. Her stepmother gives her three subpar choices for a spouse and out of them she chooses what people consider to be the worst one; an absent husband, a troublemaker stepson, and a doting family that always spoils said stepson. Xu Wan, however, figures that with an absent husband she won't have to be intimate with someone... more>> she doesn't like and the troublemaker stepson and doting family will keep her at arm's length anyway. Her goal is to live the life of a wealthy madam with no responsibilities. Unfortunately, on her wedding day, her stepson wreaks havoc causing her to loose her temper and beat him up. Expecting an imminent divorce in the aftermath, instead she's given full authority over the Marquis estate and her brat of a stepson! However, while she's busy reforming this spendthrift, spoiled, illiterate idiot, political intrigue abounds in the background and it turns out that her brat of a stepson might not be who he appears to be.

Characters

OK. There's not really a character that catches your eyes. The relationship between the family members, including Xu Wan and Zong JinCheng, the stepson, are slow building but sweet. The narrative is third person so you get glimpses of how both parties think about each other and their duties. JinCheng goes from wanting to throw out Xu Wan to sneakily figuring out how to call her mother without her realizing because he's too embarassed to tell her that he now actually WANTS her to be his mother.

My favorite character is probably Zong WenXiu who is JinCheng's cousin. He's a hardworking baby who's also very kind.

Now, a lot of the characters outside of the family are more complex but also annoying. You have the crown prince who openly displays how much he likes JinCheng, the general who tries to strangle JinCheng for looking like his dead sister, the idiotic and spoiled other troublemakers, the calm and collected genius Qin Ye who is JinCheng's ETERNAL RIVAL, and his too soft older brother Qin Shi. I suppose what makes them annoying is that we have two different levels of plot happening in this novel.

Plot

There are two levels of plot in this novel. The first is the most obvious child-raising story. This is Xu Wan doing her best to reform JinCheng. In the process she also betters the lives of WenXiu and one of JinCheng's friends who is another big troublemaker. This plot is exactly what it seems. It's heartwarming and full of the push and pull of a woman who is learning to be a mother and a son who is learning what it means to have a mother. There's a lot of really cute moments where JinCheng is trying to cause trouble only to be outmaneuvered by Xu Wan or Xu Wan has to look through JinCheng's tsundere self to realize his true feelings.

The annoying and more complicated level of plot is the political intrigue. I want to start out by saying that my issue is not with the political intrigue itself, but with the age of the younger generation in this intrigue. I really would have preffered if this plotline waited for JinCheng to grow up a little because as it is right now in the narrative, he's unable to understand how to navigate this situation, unable to clearly explain to Xu Wan so that she can handle it, too young to be told clearly what's happening, but he's continuously being used in these machinations.

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD

The backstory we get for JinCheng is that the Young Marquis, JinCheng's alleged dad and Xu Wan's absent husband, suddenly brought a baby back and said it was his son and had JinCheng registered as his legitimate eldest son before disappearing in battle again. At the start of the story, it's been years since anyone has seen the Young Marquis but the old Marquis, JinCheng's grandfather, had a dream that they needed Xu Wan to become JinCheng's mother and reform him. Thus, they marry Xu Wan in while the Young Marquis is still disappeared.

As time goes on, we see the Crown Prince meet JinCheng. From the moment they meet, the Crown Prince treats JinCheng differently and seems to dote upon him but its unclear as to why. The narrative gives us some half-finished sentences every once in a while to communicate a portion of the Crown Prince's thoughts regarding JinCheng. Meanwhile, the General of the West, Luo Jingfang (i think), is opposing the Crown Prince. JinCheng witnesses an assassination attempt by Luo Jingfang on the Crown Prince and JinCheng's intervention spoiled the assassination.

Later, Luo Jingfang strangled JinCheng while commenting in his head that JinCheng looks like the "third young miss" which it seems means Luo Jingfang's younger sister who died. But he knows its impossible that JinCheng is his sister's son because his sister wasn't pregnant.

After this strangling, the Crown Prince starts regularly visiting JinCheng for meetings of which the content JinCheng isn't allowed to tell anyone but the narrative says are regarding governing and how to rule, etc. Later Luo Jingfang finds information suggesting that his third sister did have a child not too long before death. He tasks his followers with investigating children in the capital who were born around that time and might be his niece/nephew. In the process, these subordinates suspect JinCheng but seeing that the dates are wrong, they instead suspect that JinCheng is the Crown Prince's illegitimate son.

They then kidnap JinCheng to lure the Crown Prince out and confirm whether JinCheng is the Crown Prince's son by threatening him with poison.

My issue with all of this is that the secondary plot of all of this political intrigue is just too advanced for JinCheng. He's just helpless in the tide of this storyline at an age where he can't contribute meaningfully or protect himself. Xu Wan might be capable of navigating the situation but he's forbidden from telling her anything.

Because the story's narrative is mostly following Xu Wan and JinCheng, this mostly feels like annoying and dangerous occurences that hit them when they have no knowledge or understanding of the situation.

In addition, I'm also annoyed because by chapter 206, I'm not really seeing much more active reform. It feels like the secondary plot is too soon and too rushed in the story. <<less

I really like reading this coz I wasnt stressed out about palace in fighting, thank goodness! Its really about raising a stepson and the fulfillment when you were able to raise a naughty child into a kind of a child you would brag to your relatives lol. Buts it not only the stepmoms effort, it really is a team effort (teachers and grandmas etc.).

I don't read historical novels 'cause of how badly women were treated at that time but I'm glad I gave this one a chance.

Brief synopsis:

A transmigrated modern woman enters a house where the husband has gone missing for years as the main wife. Her stepson decided to ruin her wedding day but her in-laws promised a huge fee if she can teach the boy to be a high ranking scholar and also teach him some manners in the meantime. The story starts from there. The first half if the novel... more>> was especially fun due to the boys' antics and MC's and her son's constant bickering but by the middle of the novel MC kind of fades into the background with the boy taking main stage. Which I'm not too mad about since he's cute and also quite interesting.

What I liked-

The MC is a smart lady who always cooks up some clever ways to make the children get interested in studying.

ML is so sweet to MC. Honestly I have a soft spot for awkward but sweet 2D men who treat their lovers right especially in historical times.

Loved the in-laws. They did not interfere with MC's mantle and only supported her when she needed them. The also never pushed her for a child even when they desperately wanted one. Again, a peaceful household is unheard of in historical novels and I'm glad I came across a Novel with little to no infighting/cat-fighting among women for undeserving men. Sure there were some annoying characters but they were truly passerby in the novel and I'm glad for that.

My favourite character in the novel is the MC's step nephew (?). He is such a gentle character who is always there when someone wants comfort. He's too good for the world honestly.

What I disliked:

"She trembled like a frail sparrow" Like huh??? Do modern women lose their backbones the minute they transmigrate to ancient times or something? It reminds me of other novels where women just dies from shock. Like they hear some unbecoming news then ton ToN TON!! They're gone. The fact that MC is a modern soul plays no factor in her character except when she makes lesson plans for children. In all other times she is an ancient woman through and through. I did not like that.

MC is not the actual protagonist. The boy is.

Anyways, it was still a unique plot as I haven't read any historical novels like this one before and its definitely worth reading. Also shoutout to akknovel. They always pick up the most unique and interesting FMC novels. <<less
