It's too early to tell where this is going, but at least, let's give this a proper summary:

Because of poverty, the MC became a soldier while the empire was at war. During a bombardment he got a concussion and suddenly remembered his past life. As usual... he had been reincarnated into the world of a novel he had read. He then decided to use all his knowledge to get promoted. He fought hard using it. But when he became a high ranking officer, "proper" officers (nobles who went to the... more>> military academy) started getting jealous and hindering him. He pulled through, survived everything and finally got the rank of general just before the end of the war. But now what? He has no further knowledge to use (the novel ended with the end of the war), a lot of people are just waiting for him to make a mistake, and he has no attachment to the military. The best course of action is to retire right away, while he still has money, a pension and a good reputation. But his superiors think of him as a genius soldier and believe he only wants to retire because of the constant bullying, so, to keep him nearby in case a new war breaks out, they decide to discharge him and send him to the national tax service, the new 'war front' of the empire (fighting corruption, fraud and tax evasion). And the MC thinks 'why not? It sounds like rest compared to the war!'... and will soon regret it. But, for now, he's building a task force with tanks!

It has barely started, but one thing I appreciate is that the MC is not lazy, just really tired, also he is competent and knows it (not to the point others believe him to be, but still good enough), and he has a certain level of ambition. All of this prevents him from becoming one of these passive but lucky characters. So it's a bit different as a start. Also, the MC has a war hero level of common sense... For him, everything can be solved with overwhelming force! So I'm pretty sure it will quickly turn crazy. ^^ <<less
