Seungju and Muheun come from a long line of allied families: The Seo and Kims. The Seo family have a curse that causes most of their children to be killed by spirits before they turn 20. However, Seungju was born on a special day that caused him to lack spiritual energy. This has protected Seungju from spirits. While his two older siblings were killed when he was about 10 years old, Seungju has been safe. He recently turned 20 and is starting college.

Kim Muheun is a powerful exorcist, and essentially... more>> left home when he turned 20. He only sporadically visits his family and Seungju, and but mostly spends time working. Despite not seeing each other often, Seungju and Muheun already have an incredibly deep bond. They grew up as neighbors and until Seungju turned ten, they spent lots of time together.

The novel starts by Seungju waking up after spending the night with Muheun, though he doesn't remember exactly what happened (mild/medium-ish spoilers:)

Spoiler

They did not have s*x.

[collapse]

Unfortunately, this night together has opened Seungju's spiritual eyes. So Muheun walks Seungju to and from his university to protect him from ghosts.

The novel essentially follows this pattern: Seungju's spiritual eyes get opened, Muheun protects him. Seungju gets upset over the many years Muheun has abandoned him, and Muheun doesn't acknowledge what he's done wrong, so they fight. Seungju's eyes close, some time passes, Seungju's eyes open again. Repeat.

I will admit, this sometimes caused the plot to drag and feel repetitive. A lot of the arguments between them were centered around the same issues, and it took over 100 chapters before there was a substantial difference. Rather than being a grand plot about spirits and exorcism, there is a lot more focus on Seungju's emotions and his relationship with Muheun. Although Seungju is relatively young, he is very emotionally mature and self-aware. I personally found him a very likeable, compelling protagonist. Unlike other young protagonists, he is not naive. He doesn't fantasize about being with Muheun together, he doesn't see them dating as a realistic possibility. The novel also clearly shows WHY Seungju feels this way.

The circumstances that cause his spiritual eyes to open do differ, and there are spirits invovled. There is a broader plot related to exorcising spirits, the curse on the Seo family, and the organization of exorcists. However, there is more emphasis on the relationship between Muheun and Seungju.

Now, let me address something very important: the age gap. Muheun essentially helped raise Seungju from when he was born to age ten. (Medium spoilers, I tried to limit them) :

Spoiler

We don't get Muheuns POV until the last part of the novel. Muheun and Seungju were always close, and there are a few uncomfortable moments when Seungju is young. For example, there was a conversation with seungju saying he'd marry muheun; muheun is a teenager seungju is a child [MTLing this, it wasn't completely clear to me who first said they should get married] Muheun also refers to this conversation earlier in the novel.

It is not completely clear exactly when Muheun developed s*xual feelings for Seungju. He certainly becomes aware of it when Seungju initiates a kiss on new years (Seungju is 20). When Seungju was a minor, Muheun recognized a level of romantic feelings. This is part of why Muheun distanced himself from Seungju. There is also an element of "fate"/soul mates involved.

[collapse]

Muheun is aware of the power and maturity imbalance between them. It is present in all their interactions, so if the age difference makes you uncomfortable, avoid reading (or drop the novel if it's too much). However, it is undeniable how much Muheun cares about Seungju. They have such a strong, deep emotional connection. I personally think the manhwa did an excellent job adapting the care and focus Muheun always uses with Seungju.

This was a good novel, with a few creepy scenes with ghosts. I recommend giving it a try.

the raws: If you buy the "Webnovel" version on Ridibooks (one chapter at a time instead of the epub volumes), you will be able to MTL is using google translate. Buying the full volumes, afaik, is a bit more difficult to MTL (if I find out this is wrong, I'll edit and delete this).

Check out the manhwa (also ridibooks, no complete fanTL). It has amazing art and will hopefully get an official engTL soon. <<less

for those avoiding it because of the age gap, let me give you a glimpse of Muheun's pov then make the decision. Muheun never approached him in that way while growing up together:

Spoiler

Muheun never had sexual/romantic feelings for seungjoo while they're both young. He even foresaw seungjoo having gf and was like it is what it is. He saw their fate intertwined (guessing like soulmates) but he ignored it and thought it doesn't make sense because of age gap, growing up together and that unlike exorcists who don't care about gender, he thought seungjoo is trying to live normal life. Hence having girlfriend. He always thought of the innate feeling of longing for seungjoo was just because of their intertwined fate that he's seen. He distanced himself as much as he could, because the fate he saw didn't make sense. When he figured seungjoo (17) had feelings for him, he distanced himself even more cause he thought that maybe seungjoo only felt that way is because of the fate he's seen. When he started seeing that their fate connection was weakening and that there were no more hints of seungjoo liking him, that's when he started approaching again. Whenever he missed seungjoo, he just thought of it as because of the fundamental connection they have not because he liked him romantically. There was never a thought of getting together with seungjoo nor s*xual feelings. Until the first time seungjoo kissed him. He emphasized that the feeling he felt at the time was different from the times he'd spent with seungjoo when they were younger

[collapse]

Though it's slowburn, I like how the author built up the story with Seungjoo's pov. By the time Muheun's pov was introduced and more things happen, I just keep thinking of how happy I am for the both of them. That I'm glad seungjoo finally *very mild spoiler*
Spoiler

don't have to keep waiting for muheun anymore. That now he's always there for seungjoo

[collapse]

I truly adore how the author emphasized that it was neither their primary goal to be together. They just want to peacefully be around and take care of each other. <<less

A nice read. I've found it refreshing that it was about nature and nature's grievances.

Not too long, not too complicated, the pace is ideal and the story is exciting enough.

Seungjoo (MC) is clear-headed and logical guy, I liked his character very much. Muheun (ML) is devoted and hot af, their intimate scenes are the best, tbh, it's been long since I've read a novel this detailed.

I love them so much. They both r truly in loved. A must read. The mahwa/webtoon is a treat to the eyes although both guy seem to be always with eye bags. Well that are nocturnal job, cannot avoid I guess. Smut is good too. 🤤. I also want a ML for myself.

The fantasy of otherworldly is very interesting too. There is no lose end or story left hanging. I wonderfully written.

Honestly I'm not sure why ppl are so against other couple age-gap. They love each another. They start relationship... more>> after age 20. Unlike those who prey on underage and call it love. If really love they should wait till adult age anyway. <<less
