Well, hello there! I'm the translator of this novel. I will preface this by asking that everyone please check the tags, as this novel deals with heavy topics and I would hate for someone to be affected by accident.

Now... I could honestly go on and on about the things I love about this novel, but let me try to list out a few.

First off, and this may seem petty, but in fact makes a world of difference. This novel actually mentions places by name. No more City D or Country... more>> A. We get actual mentions of real life places and cultures. This offers an incredibly immersive experience where you can put yourself in places like Macao, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and France. It makes the story feel more real in a way that I didn't realize I missed until I found this gem.

Secondly... You know when people say "wow, the characters in this novel aren't perfect?". I've noticed that in a lot of cases, even if a main character has flaws, they will often be written in such a way that no matter what, the readers are led to always root for them. In a way, that leads to completely ignoring those flaws, rendering them theoretical. There will always be a right and a wrong, and the main character will always be on the right side, never worthy of too much criticism. That is not the case here. Ke Yu is an unreliable narrator, a self-proclaimed coward, and carries around an inferiority complex the size of the planet. That's not to say he is weak. On the contrary, he is genuinely one of the strongest and most compelling characters I've ever read. But at times, he will feel the need to defend himself to the point of hurting himself and others, which can be very painful and frustrating to read. But that is what makes him so incredibly human, and so incredibly loveable.

And finally, the side characters. These are not paper people with straightforward alliances. There's no way of simply separating them in "good" or "bad". There are characters who are irredeemably horrible, yes, but there are also characters who recognize their faults and grow from them, taking responsability for the damage they caused. It's very common for fiction to rely on black and white morality, so having to face characters that could never fit into either of those standards is actually a breath of fresh air.

TLDR: If a melancholic and grounded story with an ultimately happy ending that approaches some really heavy subjects in a respectful and thoughtful way sounds like your cup of tea, please do give this novel a shot! <<less

I vividly remember reading this some time ago and bawling at certain points. It's so beautifully written and their love was expressed so well. I'm sad it was rushed near the end, though.

But, I didn't realise this was one of those novels where they'd break up then get back together. Even though I already knew that the MC was cowardly (due to trauma), he seemed to be improving with the help of his perfect boyfriend so I thought their breakup seemed a bit incongruous. Then after that, everything was pretty rushed and skimmed over.

Just a warning, beware of sensitive themes like SA if you're reading this. <<less

A Total Gem!

The story, writing, characters, and dialogue are all so well done. It's like a modern Cinderella (as MC struggles throughout his life until he meets our ML) but written in a way that feels totally realistic.

Honestly, I thought I'd get bored once the MC and ML got together, like with most stories, but nope! The highlight of the story is seeing the MC grow and overcome his incurable defects with the ML's support.

The MC and the other characters are so well-written and layered that their actions sometimes really... more>> annoyed me. E.g. The MC is a huge liar, mostly because he's terrified of being rejected or looked down on.

The ML is near perfect—yet refreshingly human.
Spoiler

Sure, he has some flaws, but they're barely noticeable. He's proud but not arrogant, super dedicated to his work, and incredibly patient with the MC's struggles. He chases the MC just enough but knows when to step back and let the MC figure things out. He may also seems a bit childish in his persuit yet u won't get annoyed with his tenacity. Plus, he's handsome, talented, insanely rich, hardworking, etc!!

I also love reading the extra ch's in which I skip most of the time in other novels.

The only downside I noticed is that
Spoiler

the author doesn't dive into the details of the MC's acting improvement. It was only mentioned that he spent several years copying the microexpressions from movies. There were also instances in some movies in which he performed well but the transition/process wasn't explained into detail. I didn't even noticed that he performed well, unless it was narrated that he did

this was really wonderful to read. Even the first few chapters are worth starting now because they are written so beautifully.

another reviewer has said that the plot is well designed throughout the story. I agree. There were no redundancies. I appreciate that the characters were written with such integrity.

the author's style of narration is my favourite aspect of the novel. The author has written with a voice that mirrors and reinforces their characterisation of the MC. They write they way you might look at an artwork, gliding your attention... more>> through points on the visual pathway, leading to a languid and entrancing atmosphere wrapping their words. <<less

It's such a sweet story. I don't think the drama is over done because the author moves the plot along at a good pace.

Even when it's bittersweet I make myself keep reading. I really liked their relationship. It's not all fluff and neither are perfect but in the end they decide to commit to each other knowing the past and wanting to move forward together. It's so sweet. I need more fluff.

Very well written but it was an experience more like watching an old time Taiwanese movie than reading a novel, it was to much melodrama for me, to the point I did drop it somewhere in the middle. But if you enjoy melodrama with characters well written give it a go it wont disappoint you.
