The Noble Girl Is Beautiful

Shen Yourong, as the eldest daughter of the Duke’s household, engraved the word “propriety” into her bones. Her words and actions never faltered. She neither harbored secret affections at a young age, nor engaged in the childhood antics of love-hate relationships. Moreover, she never encountered any strange encounters while traveling, smoothly embodying the epitome of a noblewoman.

The only hiccup in her otherwise flawless life was her marriage, which didn’t go smoothly. Despite discussing marriage with her nephew, she ended up marrying her uncle, which was quite embarrassing.

The Emperor, advancing in age, favored the fourth prince, Ji Chengyao, for the heir position. The fourth prince’s foster mother, Lady Shu Fei, hinted at a marriage alliance between Shen Yourong’s maternal family, the Duke of Qi’s household, and the fourth prince. Both overtly and covertly, they suggested that Shen Yourong should befriend the fourth prince.

Ji Zhuo always felt that Shen Yourong, this so-called model noblewoman, was not as genuine as she appeared. A noblewoman who seemed diligent and earnest shouldn’t be casually snacking on melon seeds while watching the fourth prince flirt with other girls, as her family tried to curry favor with him.

Overall, it's an okay historical novel, but it's difficult to define. It isn't quite a romance, nor an adventure, nor a political drama. By the end, I found myself asking, what was the point of this novel? It feels like a blend of biographical and slice-of-life genres, yet I never truly got to know or care about the protagonist.

Summary:

The eldest legitimate daughter of a duke, our MC is known throughout the capital as a noble, proper, and gentle young lady. Despite her privileged status, she feels isolated and trapped by... more>> her family's lofty expectations. Her aunt is a noble consort in the palace, her father wields military power as a duke, her stepmother fears offending her due to her status, and her younger sisters respect her. Her family and her consort aunt (the 4th prince's adoptive mother) want her to marry the 4th prince, the leading candidate for the crown prince. To facilitate this, they establish a schoolroom and invite King Ji (the emperor's younger brother) to teach the duke's children and the 4th prince.

As time passes, the MC notices that the 4th prince shows no interest in her, but rather gravitates towards one of her sisters. Secretly relieved, she hopes this will free her from her preordained fate. Meanwhile, King Ji is particularly attentive and strict with her, sparking a mutual attraction despite their suspicions and the constraints of their situation.

Spoiler

King Ji initially teases and baits her, even threatening her for knowing too much about his plans. Yet, he eventually falls in love with her. She tries to ignore him but finds herself continually drawn to him, as he allows her to drop her façade of politeness and perfection. She ultimately decides to wait for him and trust her feelings, especially after he sabotages her other marriage prospects. Eventually, he usurps the throne, cripples the crown prince, names himself regent, and marries the MC, spoiling her rotten. The end.

[collapse]

Honestly, I have mixed feelings about this novel. Kudos to the author for creating teenage characters who act their age for once. The MC and her sisters are genuinely childish and immature in their behavior and outlook. The MC tries to maintain her steady and elegant demeanor, but it takes a toll on her.

This is why I struggle to classify this as a romance novel. Unlike the usual setup (with a transmigrated or reborn heroine, essentially an adult in a teenager's body), the MC is a true 14-year-old, both in age and mentality. In contrast, the ML is 24, more experienced, and has authority over her as her teacher. While the age difference might not be historically inaccurate, it feels uncomfortable, as it seems like he's coercing and manipulating her.

Spoiler

Initially, the ML is intimidating and calculating, clearly stating his intention to use her for her family's power and ruining her other marriage prospects. As the novel progresses (around 40+ chapters), the author seems to realize that this isn't very "romantic" and tries to soften the ML's image by having the MC vent to him about her lack of freedom and choices. While he supposedly listens, we don't see a genuine change, as the MC decides to follow her heart and accept him almost immediately. The story concludes with a HEA where the ML goes OOC, shedding his cold and scheming persona to spoil the MC.

[collapse]

The problem is that, beyond their mysterious falling in love, the characters lack depth and substance. We don't learn about their goals, passions, or regrets. The leads aren't partners, allies, or friends. The MC is so passive it's boring—she doesn't dare to desire anything since her family dictates her future—and the ML, supposedly a genius schemer, lacks consistency and seems aimless after achieving his goal.

There's nothing inherently wrong with this novel, but when I finished it, I was left thinking: that's it? <<less

This novel doesn't deserve these low ratings. I get that it might not be everyone's cup of tea. But that's fine!

It's a laid-back slice of life kind of novel. If you want drama, political intrigue, backyard schemes, then please look elsewhere. This isn't it. Do not have any expectation going into this and you'll come to enjoy it for its own unique features.

Shen Yourong, the eldest daughter of Duke of Qi, is the model woman of the capital. She is noble and rule-abiding, almost too perfect. But we get to... more>> see her inner world which is like any other teenage girl, just with a bit more maturity and cleverness.

Then, there's Ji Zhuo, the brother of the current emperor, Prince Duan. He is well versed in classics and literature, gentle and amiable outwardly. But we also see his cunning and ruthless nature.

So these two two-faced people somehow gets attracted to each other and fall in love. Again, do not expect some doting love story or fluff here. The romance here kind of reminded me of Concubine's Daughter Minglan.

Be forewarned though, the leads have a pretty large age-gap. And the female lead is underage so if you feel uncomfortable with this, then I'd suggest skipping it. For me, the male lead's treatment of the FL never seemed g*ooming.

However, the best part may be the sisterly bond between the Shen sisters. They had their moments of jealousy but they also recognized that everyone had their own struggle and ultimately, their own destiny. Especially the transmigrater, Shen Qingyan, I want to give her a hug. She deserved someone like Yao Jian instead of that fake righteous Fourth Prince.

Shen Shuo was also a great brother. Also shoutout to Shen Qingfeng.

If there's one thing that I didn't like about the novel, then it's the ending.

Spoiler

I would have liked if the ML realized his ambitions at the end. No regent in history has ever had a good ending. And he had all the necessary ammunition to become the emperor. Anyway, that's just my take on this novel I guess.

I just wanted to clarify something in the description, because it is a little misleading.

(I don't blame the translator. They translated it the way it was written.). The MC and the Fourth Prince aren't really related. His stepmother is the Empress, who also happens to be the MC's aunt. Ji Zhuo is his uncle. That's the ML.

You should know that the author introduces the MC when she's 14. The prince is 16 or so. The ML is 24.

Nice novel.

Althought the FL & her brother lost their mother.. They could still live quit harmony life along with their step's families.

The FL & her stepsisters grew up in good bonding family which is a healthy example..

... more>> The ML was a scamming person.. At the beginning, he aftee the FL for benefits.. But later, he changed his mind & letting go the throne for better enjoyable life.

I just don't like the last chapter about their daughter. A 6th yrs old girl.. But she's have an ambitious to become a female emperor..

Really can't understand why it's ending like this.. <<less

I agree withe review of Naimena. I have read lots of slice of life novels. And infact I love the genre. Yet I just felt why was this written the way it is? This has so much potential but it's just like describing everything superficially and getting done with. When I reached to the end it felt like a complete waste of my time. "That's it?", perfectly describes what I felt after reading this book. I no longer want to continue.

Honestly I really loved this novel.

In the beginning the plot is full of allusions and foreshadowing that at some points made my stomach drop. The writing itself is very beautiful and how the author conveyed the FL's feelings to us the readers was lovely. Although I do feel the writing became dull towards the end.

I will say that because of the TONE of the novel as well as the writing that, from the beginning towards the middle I had different expectations to how the plot would progress... I was expecting... more>> tragedy, twists and heartbreak however I was still satisfied with how the novel ended up progressing.

also as one reviewer said, the sisterhood in this novel is great. Due to many other historical novels where girls are pitted against each other, I anticipated the sister relations would sour but to my surprise they didn't.

I recommend it because it's well rounded novel in terms of characters, plot and HE for basically everyone except maybe two.

Spoiler

The "emperor" definitely deserved what he got because of his schemes and insincere feelings. But the other person who "technically" didn't get a happy ending was concubine Shen. Although I like to think that she's probably satisfied with what she has due to her modern mindset.

A wonderful novel! I liked how realistic the progression of the story is and the best part is the relationships between the Shen family members, specially the sisters. It’s rare to read a chinese novel where females get along and even more, have well written personalities and good development. I also like the big brother and the romantic pair, even with the age gap and (kind of) the power gap, I think it’s a couple that makes sense.

The novel is very beautiful, the tl is not the best, wit the tittles changing often, some parts are also a bit on the confusing side, not many just a few, it's not bad it's solid other than those few things.

I found it a pity that we didn't get to explore the other characters more, and I'm sorta hoping there's a sequel about the child, the extra was great.

It follows the MC's marriageable age and ends soon after her wedding, so it just shows that brief time of her youth.... more>> I felt it a pity they did not explore her darker side more, it's would've been nice to see deeper into her psyche. I actually think she is one of the crueler and more selfish MCs out there, because she actually got along with her sister but was very eager to have the girl replace her in that terrible marriage. Usually they only do that when they have some bad blood with the girls they want to use to fill their assigned place but she did it to the sister she got along great with. I love selfish people so this was great for me, but I also hate people who betray with no reason and aren't messed up in 12 more ways so I'm not really as obsessed with her as I am with some truly deplorable ones next to whom she'd be a bunny rabbit so.

The CP is alright, I am not a fan of him literally vanishing people she glances at twice like, girls gotta have hobbies and he sure knows how to be a buzzkill. The age gap might be a problem for some ppl but it's not much of a problem for me. <<less
