This story: 【Elegant, reserved, cunning gentleman × Thin-skinned but mischievous overachieving beauty】

“Life’s ultimate overachiever” Qiu Huanian transmigrates into an ancient era as a ger—unloved by his father and stepmother, traded for two buckets of sorghum to the Du family in the next village as a child bride during a famine.

When he wakes, the family has only three straw huts, two hens, and the Du siblings, thin as twigs. The village gossips claim his unseen husband, the eldest Du son, has ruined his future and will return home to mooch off others. Everyone awaits the joke.

Qiu Huanian’s heart races as he gazes at Du Yunse’s ethereal, scholarly face. Rolling up his sleeves, he declares lightly, “No matter. I’ll support him.”

*

Du Yunse, hailed as a prodigy since ten, studied under a great scholar for years. Caught in court turmoil after his mentor’s imprisonment, he returns home, dreading the sight of his orphaned siblings and the stranger he’s bound to.

Yet upon arrival, he finds a tidy yard, lively siblings, and a stunning, praised little husband. The husband smiles warmly, urging him:

“Don’t skimp on paper for writing. Light the lamp when reading. Eat meat daily.”

“I’m investing in you. Once you top the exams, repay me well.”

Du Yunse’s heart melts. He clasps the delicate hand. “I’ll win you a top scholar title.”

*

Making sorghum candies, fermenting tofu, growing cotton, buying mules… The Dus thrive, envied by all. When officials arrive with exam news, Du Yunse is drying Qiu Huanian’s hair.

To whispers that Qiu’s heart isn’t fully his, the noble scholar smiles.

“A jewel chooses its owner. I’ll prove I’m his destined one.”

SO GOOD

Literally the title, so it's power couple [genius in business x genius in study] but poor to rich. Which is satisfying. Very well written without feeling redundant in the aspect of farming/building business. The transition between farming to the political struggles as their life quality improves is smooth plus the plot twist is, although not that shocking, still ok. Everything and everyone will have the reveal at the end!!

So many cute side couple!! I'm happy for them all. When I said cute, it doesn't mean that everything is all... more>> sunshine & rainbow. Some side couples are pure sugar from start to the end, some need to travel through the mountain & sea, bittersweet. <<less

I got art baited and landed myself in a goldmine. This satisfied all my time travel transmigeration cravings.

(If you go to the official JJ site, there's more drawings of them. You know it's good when the author commissions art for the Main characters)

I didn't have much expectations diving in, thinking it was going to be a typical slice of rural life but boy was I happy to be proven wrong. The author slapped me with 1 million characters of intricate plot, character developments and drama. I was astonished.

Within... more>> the first few chapters the novel already blew off my initial expectations, setting stone a series of events that are going to be well connected with future plots. The main character's personality was well established and I found it so satisfying that instead of getting all his knowledge from watching short content on douyin no one remembers, he is the content creator. It's not like he's omnipotent in every single thing, but it gave reasonable explainations to why he was so capable.

The author stayed clear of my biggest pet peeve the moment he transmigerated I felt so refreshed.
Spoiler

MC honoured the previous soul and buried his keepsake beside ogbody's mother. We also know what happened to the other soul so that's a plus. The respect for the ogbody is something I rarely see in a lot of novels so I love that.

ML is nicknamed xiao long nan (little dragon boy, a reference to many popular xianxia series (s)) by the MC and he really lives up to his nickname. Although his family situation is impoverished, he never gave up and tries his best to protect all his loved ones in his own ways.

ML and MC's relationship is also really well written. They are practically the power couple in my dreams. Both are capable and respectful, with doses of sweetness scattered every few chapters. They really are the model couple everyone wishes to be.

The novel itself is split into four major arcs.

1st arc - The slice of life where MC adapts and the family starts to gain fame and money.

2nd arc - The calm before storm where they settle into capital and deeper plot starts unraveling.

3rd arc - I'll call it the palace drama arc to avoid too much spoilers.

4th arc - Calm after the storm where broken pieces and relationships are mended, closing into a nice end.

When I first started reading, I didn't expect a whole arc of power struggles within the palace and the way everything pieced together at the end was really satisfying. Many characters you thought were canon fodders ends up playing a bigger role than you expected, and you can't help but sympathize with a lot of them.

There are many things I love about this novel, but the absolute favourite thing that blew me away was how every character had a story. Pick any characters off from the novel and they will have a proper relationship chart and background. The author breathed life to all of them, letting them play a part to the overarching storyline. I especially love how not all of them have the standard happy ending because that's how life is in a turbulent era. There are some with really bittersweet ends and honestly the author could just pluck some of the CPs out and write a whole spinoff dedicated to them.
Spoiler

The one couple I least expected was the wife-chasing crematorium of the crown prince. There were a lot of noise in the comment section about this couple's trajectory in JJ but the author's reasonings was very solid and ngl I shed a tear. Most couples outside the main cp had a pretty rough beginning and end, but the cute babies revived me from the bittersweet feelings so all is good. I just wish Yumin had a better ending, I was really routing for that lad. Dude had his heart broken twice and still can't get a solid good ending. Guys from the Yu family just couldn't catch a break. His nephew's CP with Qingjun was just absolute depression. Hope in their next lives they'll reincarnate into better families.

That aside, my only complaint was how an anticipated malexmale couple turned out to be malexger in the end (to be fair they are still kids but the roadmap of the childhood sweethearts troupe is already written). The author broke ancient rules with some CPs and built up an unconventional couple, but it still ended up as a typical 'straight' ship so that was a bit disappointing. As with all traditional ger novels, it felt rather conservative which makes me question why have a differentiation between gers and females in the first place, but it's just what the genre's about ig. It's not a big deal, just lamenting the lost opportunity since I've never seen an unconventional ship in a ger novel compared to the similar omegaverse troupe.

Honestly I didn't even notice when I reached the end of text until I saw the final chapter title. It was so engaging and time passed in a blink of an eye. I love the way the author throws flashbacks of the beginning of the novel and shed a tear when it ended. It's been a while since I've read something this well-rounded. This is a gem I would reccomend anyone craving some ancient china series that starts off from a small rural village.

Off to visit the author's other books now.

Edit : Nvm just found out this is the author's most recent book. Her older ones are way too patriotic for me while the teased ones aren't released yet. <<less

Uwaaahhhh....I just finished this Rollercoaster of a story.

I'm an avid "transmigrated into a ger to do farming or business" reader. This one is one is so fleshed out. It picked at all the rights spots. It never felt too rushed or too slow. It took me a full week to read all 200+ chapters.

We have a MC who is omnipotent, but it MAKES SENSE. He's like LiZiqi on steroids, and retains all the information in his head. ... more>>
Spoiler

Like processing cotton, cooking foods, cross-breeding fruits, making sugar beets sweeter, perfumes, scented oils, cooling gels, even iodine!

[collapse]

The ML is touched upon and not nuanced. You can see the husbands POV in some parts and boy does he deliver every time he does. He's a total wife-con. He ABSOLUTELY ADORES the MC.

Their relationship is love at first sight, but we see a gradual growth in their relationship, how their first initial spark flared and how deep their feelings towards each other became later, which shows in how they treat each other and to the ppl they care about.

Every character had a part in the grand scheme of the novel. Every character was added in some capacity that actually moved the plot along and some characters had backstories so intertwined into the plots it was insane. I had to keep a record for almost every named character. But there were no plotholes that I could see.

My favs were the secondary couples

Spoiler

Zhu Jingchang X Su Xinbai

This couple was the trope-y golden retrieverxcat situation where all they needed was communication. But they were cute.

Wu Shen x Min Leyi

Had to be one of my favorites. They get each others vibes and Min Leyi is free spirited and didn't deserve to be treated so horribly for just wanting to be expressive. Wu shen is not much in the story, but he doesn't demeen and even encourages Min Leyis freedom.

[collapse]

The side characters like the siblings Jiujiu and Chunseng were not much but they have an established personality and have subplot that tie into the story.

Overall, I give it a 5/5. I really enjoyed it! <<less

This is definitely a long novel to read. It almost feels like a life time but the timeline in the main story event happens within the span of 3-6 years.

There is emphasis in officialdom so expect some political intrigue, fights within the royal family etc. I would say if you are used to these type of ancient ger farming story most of the tropes are there but I would say this novel does a great job at developing the agriculture industry. The author tries their best to describe the science... more>> behind it so it makes the story a bit more realistic.

It sort of becomes more of a nationalistic propaganda towards the latter part of the main story vol 4 and the description on some of the foreigners especially the description of the south east asia native can feel a bit offensive (but then again I did MTL this).

I would say the way the author handle the main MC and ML relationship is just so beautiful done. It was love at first sight but they slowly cultivated their feelings in a healthy way. The same goes for the side characters, the way the MC doesn't try to meddle with the side characters relationship but instead gently provide advice but let them make their own choices.

It's definitely a good novel to binge read. There is no major ups or down but the story does keep you entertained the whole way through. <<less

Overachieving ? Yes the MC is. You can feel how hard it is for MC to gain money and I feel it so much 😞 I am stressing for him everytime. The money is never enough!! Lol but well hardwork will never betray you.

Both MC and ML complete each other. I can see the hardwork from MC side and ML side. It is different from other novel. Most novel that I read shows only one person do everything and their partner only as like a decoration (?). Just to make... more>> it a romance and yaoi.

Face slapping is delicious. The plot is plotting. Waiting for the extra. Go read it ! <<less

I really have mixed feelings about this. I read and read and was feeling it was so long then game it ended.

the world building was there and a plot going on on the background as well.

but it wasn’t satisfying to be honest.

Ive read Lee Jin’s farming diary before I think that was the name, but it was never this intense or had so many things going on. So it was relaxing to read. This novel I wanted to finish as soon as possible coz I wanted to know what happened... more>> to the characters on it. This was due to many palace drama and stuff, but it was still straining.

i do appreciate the author didn’t make the MCs uncle go back to place which was normally the case on these novels though I do not know what will happen in the extras so will have to wait and see.

overall if you like ancient novels with good plot this should do. <<less

Its good story. And a long one! But I enjoy it. I love that every chapter is so long.

MC is overachiever, he certainly know alot of things from previous world. From cooking, painting, calligrahpy to argiculture. He is garry sue. Too perfect. Same goes to ML. I dont mind, but its too cliche. But while both garry sue, I like them. Usually in gers novel, I find the ML a bit boring. And lack of charming point even if theyare all kind and hardworking 😭😅.

Though the one that bugging my... more>> mind in earliest chapter is how at ease MC adapted to the new world and accept it. He also see the real Qiu Hainian also occupying his body in another world in a dream and there is no mental break dow or confused or wanting to get back to another world.

The novel is long but the side characters dont get much detail. Take it the little brother and sister, I wish I could see how much bonding the sister and brother to ML when they first meet. But no, there is no chapter mentioning how ML relationship with little siblings develop, only in passing. To me, even the relationshop between MC and ML is abit abrupt. But this is maybe because I love slow burn.

Or another side pairing that I find still do not resolve their problem fully until the end. But this is story is more plot driven. We see MC making something, we see in the earliest novel how they hande the antagonist (and after that, there is no really antagonist in a another volume), opening shop, while ML doing exam, meeting good and smart people, both achieving great things etc. They rarely encountering problem. Their life is smooth journey. And while there is politics intrigue, we dont really see it that much because mainly its all behind the scene. This many chapter and words and they didnt really include it.

But I love his friendship! With all his friend.
Spoiler

Especially with Su Xinbai.

The story covers everything well but mainly focuses on the MC and ML. The side characters don't get much detail, but their endings or current situations are briefly mentioned.

I really enjoyed reading this because the characters are so dynamic! But since the story is quite long, there were times when I wished for more intense twists and big, more detailed story of the side chara, and climactic moments to shake things up.

On Hold indefinitely (Finished as of March 11th)

I've heard good things about this novel in social media, and the art are good too, however it fall short from my expectation, or rather it's not as good the more I read it.

The beginning is okay and satisfying, where the MC start to make candy and improve their livelihood, and ML come home, up till' the first county examination and the conflict with the Zhao family, from there it become convoluted gradually.

First off, I know it's unavoidable in ancient setting to... more>> not have conflict with relatives or neighbor, but in this one I think it takes too much spotlight, the type of conflict and the type of antagonist aren't new either, same 'ol braindead insufferable people, the type to blame other people (MC & ML) for their own shortcoming and failures, it truly never fails to ignite some sort of classist and misogynist feeling in my heart (bcs' the antagonist were either always women or people poorer than MC), which makes me uncomfortable, yeah yeah I know they're bad, but could you just focus on the MC and ML journey more? It doesn't help that this kind of plot always happen as soon as the last antagonist are dealt with, and can stretches up to 40-60 chapters, meanwhile the MC doesn't really do much in terms of character development, he does handle people who scheme against him but doesn't really show much reaction or progress as a character, he's so... blank and stagnant, the author want to show how calm and fair and intelligent the MC is compare to the always scheming dumbasses antagonists, which is okay plotwise but the execution is overkill to the point of cliche, none of those characters are interesting, why put so much time to put them in the limelight, when they're just small shrimps to enhance the protagonist good points, the lack of Yunse (ML) pov also a turn off for me, I know he's focus on studying but I wish the author could involve him more, it just feels like Huanian is facing all the dumbass antagonist alone, in the first arc I think Yunse just appear for like 10-15% of the plot, which makes my interest in him (as a character as well as the main couple) died out fast, in the end I became interested in Jingchen Xinbao couple more than the bland main couple, which is sad.

Another thing that I don't like is the vagueness of the main plot, where does this story goes exactly? Is it always behind the scene with Yunse and other officials handling it? Why not incorporate it to the main story so the reader could read it? It really test my patience, in the end it always the same cycle of braindead antagonist (usually regarding trade or relative feud) making waves, gary stu flawless MC patiently handling it, and then the absent ML mysteriously solve it bcs of some secret mission that we're not aware of, I've had enough of vengeful small shrimp, I want to know more about the politic intrigues and especially the crown prince 😭

Lastly, the focus on ensemble cast are TOO. MUCH. Really too much, I want to read about the MC and ML, not the history and life journey of all characters in every county they visit (Except the Zhu Su couple, I like them enough), especially if they add nothing to the main plot, it's okay at first, but become unbearable later in contrast with how minimal screen time the MC and ML got.

Usually I'm not this sharp about BL, maybe I'm a bit disappointed bcs I expect much from the positive reception, and because I found several other works of the same type are better in spite of lesser hype, such as Fei Pin Ying Qiang (although not mpreg), Favourite ugly husband, Li jin daily farming life, even old works such as Exile and Rebirth of glory and splendour have more charming characters and readable more structured plot.

Add Update: March 11th, Completed main story

Okay so maybe I was a bit too harsh on the last comment, for this genre with over 200 chapters and one million words it's nearly colossal, the author really works hard to search and plan all the plot points especially about MC agriculture innovation, they also add notes to provide more context to readers in between chapters, which I appreciate very much.

All in all, I think it's a feel good story with rags to riches trope, village to capital setting, and MC slowly becoming a buddha like figure in reference to his achievements, they became so rich that they can help improve the livelihood for people they held dear, really giving food to my idealistic side that want everybody to be happy and fulfilled.

Also because the story really stretches beyond the horizon it's definitely more plot driven than character driven (for me I prefer the later), the split of endless characters journey and development makes me bitter, when I began to like certain characters but then the pov switch to MC, and then when I began to enjoy MC side it's switched to others.

The things in my head can't translate to words anymore so I'll stop here, all in all it's the journey to the path of absolute wealth, in riches, materials, and relationship, all the hurdle doesn't rlly impact them significantly or personally bcs it's just the the royal cohorts moving around, so if you like plot where everything goes smoothly then this is for you. <<less

the plot is REALLY GREAT, tho I was pretty much able to guess almost all of the plot twist within this story. It's a pretty fun read and will not make one feel bored (considering I always feel distracted when reading). Almost every genre and tags are within this story—love at first sight, found family, enemies to lovers, childhood friends to lovers, master and servant, lovers to enemies etc.—which made the story stand out.

Almost everything is part of the story. No character is wasted and every words make sense as... more>> the story progress. It's not monotonous and it doesn't just revolve around the main characters. Every character, every single person is a whole different person, almost making me think that the personalities might be based on some actual real people.

To be honest, MC has his own golden-finger but it makes me often feel like he really deserves it. He works hard for all his achievements and it's the same for his husband.

Unexpectedly, the couple I was really rooting was
Spoiler

the Azure Phoenix Lord and Jie Tanguang. Their story is really interesting and heartbreaking

They were more than just a lord and his consort. I really love them.

And I, accidentally, disliked
Spoiler

his uncle, who's crown prince's shadow and future queen. There's something about him the irks me to death. Like come on, dude, why you always indecisive? You're hurting not just yourself but also the people around you!

Overall, it's a solid 5/5 ⭐ for me. It's the first time I actually read a story straight for days and not feel bored. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! <<less
