Xia Wansheng dies from overwork and transmigrates into a book, becoming the canary who leaks business secrets, almost ruining the CEO’s family, and ultimately suffers a tragic death from revenge.

He opens his eyes, holding the confidential documents in his hand.

Facing him is the cold CEO, Yu Congyan. The two are in the bedroom, staring at each other.

With both human and material evidence present, the man in front of him remains gentle, yet his eyes are icy enough to kill: “Wanwan, your younger brother said you were going to steal my contract. Why would you betray my trust?”

The system comes online at this moment: [Host, please immediately admit your mistake and beg for forgiveness to achieve the ab*sed ending, and then you can return to the original world!]

Xia Wansheng immediately closes his eyes, hearing nothing.

Stealing trade secrets? How much compensation? How many years in prison?

Damn it, even after transmigrating, I still have to deal with this hateful capitalist. Returning to the original world? I’d rather just die!

He turns and opens the window, immediately ready to jump.

Yu Congyan’s pupils quake: ??!?

No! I was just asking if you stole my contract to pressure you into admitting it, do you have to prove your innocence like this?!?!?

****

Everyone says Yu Congyan’s canary is excessively fierce, daring to slap his face in this way.

At a c*cktail party, a scheming green tea bit*h provokes him, deliberately splashing a whole glass of red wine on Xia Wansheng’s white shirt. The surrounding people gasp.

Xia Wansheng is expressionless, very calm.

——This shirt cost 88,000. Will the overbearing CEO pinch his chin and ask if he can afford to compensate?

Can——not——afford.

Better to die!

Xia Wansheng comfortingly pats the green tea female supporting character on the shoulder, calmly grabs a dinner knife from the table, and prepares to end himself.

Yu Congyan, rushing over to seize the knife, his eyes splitting: Who provoked him again?!

The scheming green tea is shocked: I just splashed some wine!! This is definitely extortion!!

****

Ever since his innocence was questioned, Xia Wansheng hasn’t smiled, as if he has lost all desire for everything.

Yu Congyan’s heart aches. He thinks, Xia Wansheng probably really loves him deeply, to be unable to bear even a shred of slander and suspicion.

Faced with repeated framing by the green tea receiver and business rivals, Yu Congyan only rubs his temples with a headache and says in a deep voice:

“He is innocent, he just loves me too much.”

“?”

Until Yu Congyan finally proposes to Xia Wansheng, presenting a diamond ring worth hundreds of millions, gentle and affectionate: “Wanwan, I saw your sadness, I won’t let you get hurt again, marry me.”

Xia Wansheng is silent for a long while: “…Marry you? Does that mean you’ll always be on top?”

Xia Wansheng’s gaze moves downwards.

He abruptly stands up and pushes open the window.

Xia Wansheng: I can’t handle this, I’m going to die now.

Yu Congyan: …?????!!?

What?! Wife???

I understand both the high and low ratings for this story. This story started and ended strong but muddled too much in the middle. I'm rating it on the lower side because thinking how great it could have been if properly written saddens me so much.

This is mostly a character-driven story and the consistency of the characters is where the author failed.

Spoilers ahead

... more>> MC

He was trying to kill himself at first but suddenly stopped trying for no mentioned reason. It was not about completing the plot because the plot demanded he be offlined. Wished it was established or even hinted at why he decided to start living, taking care of the music career, etc.

System

It rarely spoke at the start and seemed to be one those robotic automated system that would be mostly background presence. Then, for no reason at all, it started to have a personality and started needling MC.

ML

Supposedly regressed but the story didn't flesh out the advantages this rebirth gave him. Honestly, him being reborn was barely mentioned and could have been a plot point that was scrapped entirely. There was this one part where ML was starting to suspect that MC might have transmigrated. Then, he said "No, transmigration is too crazy of a theory." And being reborn isn't??

There's also this scene where he can't kick his visiting mother out of his own home. It was established previously that ML was not filial by the way he talked to/disrespected his father and grandfather. And he has no love for his mother as well. Plus, his mother has no power in the household so her controlling ML's position is not possible. So why can't ML just kick her out? Plot reasons, because mother has to be there for dinner with MC.

Even side characters have inconsistent characterizations. At one point, this character is a highly-acclaimed psychologist who had a therapy session with MC. And then him being a psychologist was never mentioned again because he's apparently a businessman now who owns a restaurant?

I can forgive a lot of plot holes but characterization inconsistencies really make me grit my teeth. How am I supposed to care about these characters when the story keeps changing WHO they are?

There are a lot of good parts of this story, make no mistake. I love how the author handles MC's realizations about his desire to stay, how MC navigates through his feelings that he tried to numb. I do love the humor as well.

I still recommend you give this one a try if you want a short, sweet, and slightly angsty read. <<less

I'd give this 4-star but the rating is currently too low for this story. It's not that bad, I think it's a pretty solid 4-star story. I love the comedy and absurdity of MC and how the characters develop, but the plot progression and the pacing were a bit messed up, and the side characters are superficial. The relationship between MC and ML progressed slowly for half the story, but then rushed in the end.

If you like:

  • ML always worries about MC
  • MC has to act like a white lotus
  • MC is apathetic and doesn't regard the (book) world as real
then you might like this story

An Underrated Gem Full of Humor, Chaos, and Charm!

This novel is an absolute delight! The translation is excellent, and although some plot points feel a little rushed or could use more explanation, the story never feels confusing or incomplete. It's easy to follow and incredibly engaging from the very first chapter. The romance is slow-burn—so slow, in fact, that at chapter 50 there’s barely any real romantic development yet. But surprisingly, that’s part of the charm. The focus is more on the hilarious misunderstandings, dramatic overreactions, and the sheer absurdity... more>> of the characters’ interactions—especially the main character’s extreme reactions to stressful situations. It’s both hilarious and strangely heartwarming. Xia Wansheng’s refusal to play by the usual script is what makes this story stand out. His constant threats of dramatic self-destruction in response to emotional conflict or capitalist injustice are equal parts dark humor and social commentary. Meanwhile, Yu Congyan’s helpless reactions only make it funnier—and sadder—as he tries to understand a person who seems impossible to read.

Honestly, this novel deserves way more attention than it’s getting. I’m only at chapter 50, but I’m already hooked and desperately hoping for more updates soon. A chaotic little masterpiece that’s too underrated for its own good.

Highly recommended for readers who enjoy emotional chaos, dry humor, and characters that flip tropes on their heads. <<less
