One one hand we have a woman who's mother decided to let her live as a man after her twin brother died, therefore someone who is very used to a) live in fear and b) play a role, on the other hand we have a dark and power-hungry (? - it's alluded that he was just bored) grand tutor who killed the emperor.

Nie Qinglin hasn't had a single good day in the palace. Her father the emperor is just awful, her mother wasn't favored and later died, furthermore she has... more>> no talents whatsoever (mostly because having talents means to walk around with a target on your back). Still, shes eagerly waiting to go get conferred as a wang and leave the palace to live independently. Sadly for her, the grand tutor stages a coup and she's the glorious winner of said coup... or at least until the empire stabilizes and the grand tutor doesn't need her anymore...

What follows is a sort-of-battle of wits, where the sexy grand tutor is suspicious of the "little emperor" and the "little emperor" tires to hide his/her "manliness", or lack of thereof. The grand tutor/ML finds himself inexplicably attracted to said little emperor, which causes him no small amount of stress... the FL is - for the most part of the book or at least at the beginning - not a big fan of the ML. In the beginning she kind of goes with the flow with small acts of defiance and later

she flees from the "grand tutor" since he wants to "kill" the emperor and let her be just the "emperors long lost sister". and later she gets abducted, her kidnapper was someone whom she promoted and had a secret exchange with, although she never intended to let it get to this point.

Both the FL and the ML are complex characters with flaws who hurt each other and care for each other.

The FL isn't opposed to the rule of the ML, her father was incompetent and cruel, her dilemma stems from the fact that nobody believes that she has (initially) no interest in the throne, she can't tell her secret because that would either get her killed instantly or get used. Other than that - shes kind, resourceful, intelligent, knows which battles to fight and which not. She later falls for the ML but at that point there was already a sort of power-shift in the dynamic between the two of them (from him having all the power to him accommodating her). While she's no "girl-boss"/"girl-power"-heroine, she's honest and has a backbone in the ways that are possible for her.

The ML - like most of the ML's of the author- is initially an as*hole or rather a ruthless, cold-blooded villain with a face of an angel. He never hesitates to extract revenge - he went to war for the emperor and the emperor later starved the army and didn't care anymore so the ML had to beg the emperor and got humiliated etc. - or to eliminate possible future threats. He falls for the "little emperor" and, at the beginning, just takes what he wants without any regard as to what the "emperor" wants. He feels like hes already making a concession by "falling for the emperor". Later on he softens a lot and really tries to make the FL happy, even at his own expense. He nonetheless stays ruthless, manipulative and black-bellied outside the relationship with the FL. Regarding the purity of the ML, for those of you who care about that:

Hes not "pure". He had several concubines etc. As soon as he fell for the FL he never visited them again.

The villains are "good" villains, who are intelligent and have solid reasons for their behavior.

All in all, an enjoyable read. Would recommend. <<less
