Because this has such low ratings, I had to leave a review.

This one has a feel of realism and lack of pink tinted lens view (or even black tinted towards everyone except ML as seems to often be the case instead, for ancient China settings) that really struck at me. Not to say that no one has plot armour or good luck, but later onto that.

Yixiao struggles as any girl in an ancient Chinese dynasty setting with all its limitations would. She has the advantage of some extra knowledge (very... more>> little actually, because she was such a non-entity in her first life) but it, in no way makes her omniscient and while she sometimes thinks she's all scheming and understanding of the background dealings of things, it's hilarious how wrong she can be.

Minor spoiler about beginning of novel:

Spoiler

Her prior knowledge is mainly only used at the beginning, in her youth, to save her from the clutches of her abusive fathers side of the family.

This story gave me a lot of 'Legend of Concubine's daughter Ming Lan' vibes. Yixiao makes me think what Ming Lan might have been like if her Mom were a more capable Concubine Lin. It's a nice change to see the mother character not be a virtuous angel that died at birth but actually has a powerful but ineffectual maiden family. People in this story can be quite ugly inside without coming off as cartoonishly unreasonable. This novel seems to portray the evilness in people quite realistically, they're are a product of their times and their motivations are usually clear with visible cause and effect, whether it be greed, selfishness, jealousy or a spiteful grudge. Oh, you still hate them, but it's not the ridiculous over-the-top-2d sort that makes you drop the book. Yet. But maybe that's just me.

If anything would make you drop the book, it's all the names, relationships and titles/statuses that can be really confusing but that's mainly because of the translation (which is okay and pretty speedy other than that) and not the novel itself. Pinyin with a glossary at the end or beginning might have actually made that easier. Or rather, if you're gonna read a ancient Chinese setting, you've gotta get used to the fact that relationships in the upper echelons is complicated as heck.

The only other thing that bugs me, like most of these other rebirth novels, is the intelligence upgrade time travel gives them. Dying pathetically in the first life but suddenly becoming a schemer by going back in time - having prior knowledge about things only gives you time to prepare, it doesn't make you smart. But then, I suppose, we should give time its due. Removing obstacles that hinder their progression from a young age and being able to grow up healthier the second time, get an education a second time, with the maturity of already having lived one life to its end, particularly a painful pathetic one. It teaches them to be wary and mistrustful, since trusting the wrong people is usually what gets them killed and gives them a more mature, disillusioned eye to see the world through.

Yixiao is also quite lucky in some aspects, though she did help that luck along at times and at other times it's the ML's purple halo giving her a push up (and does he have a halo - strangely enough, I don't hate him for it. Yet. There's a lot still to be revealed about him).

Minor spoilers about their relationship ahead:

Spoiler

I quite like their "non-romance". It's the most realistic one I've seen yet I think, feelings wise anyway. But then I only say that because he's one of the few MLs in these Asian novels that's not completely hung up over some girl he met when he was 11. Post-marriage/newlywed-stage, their relationship dynamic is quite refreshing to see in this genre. They bicker and fight all the time, but they're both pragmatic and respect each other's expertise in their respective area and don't hesitate to ask for help or advise when it comes to business. And they're not one of those annoying couples that are married but act like chaste monks who only have accidental skinship until the author decides to make them confess heartfelt feelings to each other. And wow, an FL that actually knows how to reciprocate instead of crying and trying to run away.

[collapse]

Edit: Ended up dropping it around one of the early 100s chapter. Been a while, but pretty sure it was because the male lead got insufferable or downright abusive to the point that you're no longer even hoping for romance <<less

Another rebirth story based on a Chinese history. The difference between this one and others is that this novel describe a very detailed and figurative background of times. It is a very good novel to help you understand ancient Chinese culture. Thank you for translating it! I'll keep reading it.

You want a non-stop mess of political schemes and royal pains in the *ss? ?

Then you came to read the right book because the court intrigue and plots are neverending so much so that you might end up screaming, "CAN I GET A BREAK? PLEASE!" like I did. My brain is tired of trying to figure out who is scheme who and backstabbing and plotting and lying and why...? ?

FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! DO THESE CHARACTERS HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN SCREW EACH OTHER OVER?!? ?

The MC barely resolves... more>> one plot and another comes and hits her in the face. It's so bad that the MC has to analyze and second guess everything someone says for double meanings or hints to a ploy. What little revenge she gets barely works. And the schemes she solves are only effective because she's dealing with petty people. Some schemes don't even reach her because other character's schemes are counteracted by another's schemes that may have nothing to do with her... it's RIDICULOUS!

The book description had this right, it's a game of mother f*king thrones.

In conclusion...I don't wanna read anymore. ? <<less

Too bad for one element in this story that forces me drop it at chapter 110, because there was some redeeming qualities to this novel, and I understood why people reference it to Story of Minglan.

Still, the MC is not as smart, and would be a bit more enjoyable to read if she was more competent. However, considering the information currently available to her and her past experiences shaping her behaviour, her having understandable flaws and not being perfect, even if at times frustrating, was a breath of fresh air... more>> in the genre. The unending string of plots and troubles does get a bit much, and a few chapters of calmer pace and sweet moments here and there wouldn't be a luxury.

But my main problem is the ML.

Spoiler

He is insufferable, cold, moody, threatens MC to lock her up, mocks her while she cries, says he married her just for convenience, always blackmails her to do things for her, and is generally disagreeable to her, while hounding her to be his maid (which, to be fair, is what a wife was in theses times but if only that was the only bad thing about him). Proclaims to only want someone to manage his mansion but also get terribly controlling and jealous. Wouldn't be a problem if he wasn't supposed to be the ML, and she was just trying to survive, but he's just not a nice person.

MC is constantly frustrated by him and not in a good way. She herself is supposed to do her duties as wife but the help he gives her is always framed as a show of his benevolence and that she should repay him. If she's not tending to him, he's unhappy, if she is, he's also unhappy. He's always making it hard for her, and expect her to be grateful for things a husband in this time period should do. He's a pain. He also menaces to kill her if she ever brings up divorce to him, while never having made any real show of love or kind gestures (and not yet in love with her either), and it happens really early in their marriage (while having met like four times before said marriage). This is not romantic and she is genuinely frightened. Literal excerpt :

The look on Jian Xubai’s face was quite horrifying. However, the way he had talked was gentler and gentler. He said, “Do you keep all I said in your mind? Humph? Why are you silent?”

“I am yours, whether I am alive or not.” Song Yixiao closed her eyes as a drop of crystal tear scrolled down from the corner of her eyes. She replied emotionlessly, “Are you satisfied now?”

Jian Xubai nodded smilingly and said, “Good girl!”

How is this not a horror story ??? The dissonance I had from her being in distress and him calmly oppressing her and then the servant thinking thinking afterwards that the master favored her so much like ? How ??? The passages before and after also describes his fingers' horned pulp rubbing her eyelashes, the viciousness of his eyebrows 'so strong it seemed physically real', his bursts of rage, and that she's never allowed to step out of the mansion again (then the servant manages to negotiate with ML to allow for some urgent exceptions for her duties and, I'm sorry, is this supposed to be attractive and kind ?? Because the story is trying to tell that it is). He also knows he's in the wrong and shouldn't accuse her but doesn't care (once again, written in plain text).

Like, he also sincerely told her something along the lines of 'if at least your father cared about you then I could use him because he would do it for your sake' while being fully aware that she was mistreated by her paternal family while being himself disliked by his own father, which she rightfully points out (for once). This is not done teasingly, the text clearly states that it's to aggravate her. He often brushes off her concerns while also not telling her the necessary information. Which could be valid, given that he doesn't know her that well, and must be careful about spilling everything about his situation and various complications in his family, but is fundamentally s*upid when it's relevant to her duties of managing the damn house he claims is what he married her for !

Regardless of the fact that he is a huge jerk, my other main gripe is that they are not equal, he has all the power, while also playing the victim 'oh woe is me she dares sometimes not like that I belittle her constantly'. They are not bickering playfully, he's low-key abusive. MC is not perfect, but she doesn't deserves that.

Now, I understand and generally prefer more realism in ancient chinese novels, which is why I don't mind depictions of characters with wildly different values than our modern ones, or historically accurate harems. It is more interesting to me than the nth novel about overpowered fated lovers that just has the veneer of an historical era but could actually take place anytime anywhere. But this is not it, and I really dislike feeling repeatedly gaslit by the novel that his behaviour is in any way reasonable, while also not giving any qualities to his character. Maybe he changes, maybe not, I'm too tired to find out. He's just painfully unlikable. Being in ancient times does not mean being absolutely unable communicate or having no redeeming qualities. He's also impatient (despite what the text says), not understanding, has violent tendencies, unable to give compliments, hypocritical, remorseless, and generally mean. This is not a flawed character, this is a big bag of flaws. I guess he's handsome. And rich. Wow. I'm swooning.

I could be quoting and providing examples for every claim I made but this already way longer than I planned it to be. In short, he's way too similar in both overt and more subtle behaviours that real-life modern ab*sers employ that any excuse of 'historical accuracy' falls totally flat. This isn't crazy yandere territory 'I love you way too much', it's genuinely disturbing for anyone having been in any way witness of this kind of patterns. Is it dramatic ? Maybe. But even if he wasn't an ab*ser, he's still a dirtbag all he same, with the narration quietly denying that he is.

[collapse]

This has been a bit rant-y, but I truly did not expect this kind of characterization for the ML and got totally blindsided by it, so I thought I'd give a fair warning to people a bit more sensitive than the norm.

The romance is a bit lacking it's more about courtyard politics than anything else. Found the FL a bit useless and ML lacking as well. I stopped reading at chapter.115 because of lack of interest. It's not bad but it's not great either. Maybe I'll finish reading it one day.

So far I find this novel very enjoyable and likeable. The characters are all realistic and MC is not OP and only rely on the past life memories for help. I personally like her she’s neither weak nor strong but she isn’t s*upid (as she learns from her past mistakes and isn’t naive anymore).

Good job, I love

thanks
