For two years after her son’s wedding, Yang Yufen never showed her face. Everyone said she was the stereotypical cruel mother-in-law who despised her daughter-in-law, Qin Nian—ignoring her during pregnancy, absent when her grandchild fell gravely ill. It wasn’t until Qin Nian met with an accident and the child passed away that Yang Yufen finally saw the truth. At the hospital, she spotted her son, who had been missing for two years, with his mistress. Overcome with rage, she slapped him—only to be shoved by the other woman, stumbling and hitting her head on the steps. Death came swiftly.

But when she opened her eyes again, she found herself back at the moment her son had just married, calling her for the first time. This time, she didn’t hesitate. She took his allowance, gathered all her savings, and rushed to care for her daughter-in-law.

This one is a good slice of life. I am not entirely sure how old the MC is, but it's a story following the life of an older woman character, which is rare.

It's filled with lots of chinese patriotisms and brainwashings of the time. But you mainly see what a busy bee MC is and how skillful she is with woodcrafting and networking. Makes me want to go and try with my neighbors.

From time to time you have side character's point of views, but they are brief.

If there are misunderstandings... more>> - they are just momentary as MC is quite the decisive and people smart character.

Overall 5/5 cause of the rarity of the type of character Yang Yufen is.

Uodated review (mostly cause of the 1 star review) :

Spoiler

Yeah, the son was on a mission and he didn't know he had kids. But he still tried to parent them and suddenly talk all "husbandly" towards his wife (after being several years mia) without first getting to know the whys and ifs.

So the 1 star review ranted that ppl should mind their own business when it's about someone else's parent. I agree with the overal point. But that comment doesn't really work for this story in which we see mutliple POVs.

Like, while the son is free to be skeptical towards his mother's intentions, but Qin Nian is in all her right to be angry at him. Let's not forget that they weren't so close in first place. Plus, he married her then soon after was MIA for several years (long enough for the two kids to be born, learn to run and talk and go to school. Qin Nian knows his mother much better than him, he is basically a stranger already. A stranger, who never wrote, never got interested in how his wife was doing, was missing (they even told them that he was dead) for several years, then suddenly appears - badmouths her best supported (his mother), tries to act all authoritarian towards her, and the kids. All without first trying to get to know them all again, and without any proper communication yet.

[collapse]

Of course his mother would be exasperated! And be all angry at him.

Ofc all said before was from Qin Nian's POV (as seen by readers, not direct quotes from her thoughts).

Spoiler

We end up knowing that he was on a mission for the great of the people. And it was required to be seen as dead by everyone. And with how much good he did by uncoveringthe enemies of the nation - people should show him more leniency and respect. But relationships are not so simple.

As, yeah, he had it bad - he had all the time been in danger of losing his life, there is no questioning nor undermining that.

But his wife also would have had it bad, if his mother hadn't arrived and helped and supported her. And his wife understands how much help his mother has been. Plus she had had plenty of time to burry/forget most of her feelings towards her husband, thanks to the fact that they pronounced him dead at some point.

[collapse]

A lot of times "how hard it has been" is in the eyes of the beholder. Plus they have yet to have a proper communication and talk to each other for the feelings to rekindle and emphaty to start working. <<less

This is still an ongoing novel despite having 175 chapters for a cliche plot.

I will however admit that I was a bit curious of the plot and read the first chapters and skim some chapters. And I can already see how it will end.

Spoiler

My speculation is that MC's son didn't cheat, instead it should be a big misunderstanding.

From how he is presented, it seems he is very genuine to his wife, it just that he is more patriotic. It's not like this is bad, after all when you marry someone actively supporting the country, be it soldier, fire fighter, police or even a doctor, this is something expected to happen.

What likely happen is: amnesia, mission or other misunderstanding excuses like the preggo lady likes the son and taking advantage of his kindness to guide her to the obgyn. It's weird but this stuff normal in this kind of melodramatic story.

[collapse]

Another thing is MC's personality. She is independent and strong, which is fine. What I didn't like is her attitude towards her son.

Even if he's a s*umbag to his partner, he seem to do nothing wrong for his mother. See how he wasn't even the one who pushed MC. At most you could blame him for no longer giving MC his wage to focus on his own family.

So now the story tries its best to make it as if MC is right for looking down on him because he's a s*umbag that ruin her reputation as making her this "cruel mother" persona.

But the thing is, if you look at it at her son's pov it does align. MC was definitely a tiger mom when raising him, and the son warning his wife based from his experience isn't that surprising.

Spoiler

Her son went missing after a mission and was finally found and sent to an hospital. Even a tiger mom would have felt something, while MC just remain indifferent and "well he is my son".

At the same day got even mad at him for slurping and eating loudly, like dear what. No wonder he is traumatised by you.

[collapse]

And MC, instead of thinking why her son thought of that way, just push it as his son being bad. And even the story support it when his wife got mad at him for "slandering" MC.

Which just irks me personally.

Spoiler

I have a strong opinion that how a person view their parents is up to them.

Sure you may think their parent is nice and kind, but you have to understand that unlike you, they have to live with their parents since they were a baby and how they react and behave is 90% base on how they are parented.

in short, just because you had a good experience does not mean you cannot deny them for having a bad childhood.

Heck, the number of cases where the parent is sh*t but treat their child's partner normal is also high. And yet many people still hold this old value that child should let go because ultimately they are the one who gave bith to them haha.
