At the beginning of 1975, Yukiko, the young proprietress of the Sakuradani-kan hot spring inn, fell into a coma for unknown reasons. Her only daughter, Hinami, who was attending a boarding school for girls in Tokyo, was summoned to her birthplace, Sengatake Village, by a telegram informing her of her mother’s critical condition.

Upon returning to her hometown for the first time in two years, she is told a shocking revelation by the village doctor, Reiko.

Her mother, Yukiko, who had never regained consciousness, was pregnant with a six-month-old fetus in her belly.
