“As long as I can keep my purity, it’s fine.”

Jin Hyoseop, an S-Class guide, is among the top 1% talent sought after by every guild. He joins ‘Onaip,’ a guild infamous for its extreme laziness, with the assurance that they only require contact guiding and nothing beyond that. However, contrary to his expectations that simple contact guiding would suffice, no matter how much guiding he does, it feels like trying to fill a bottomless pit…

Dropping this. In my long journey of reading novels, I have never been this pissed off by a main character. I’m ready to punch someone at this point. The first ~100 chapters were interesting — mediocre, sure, but engaging enough to binge in a day. But after that, every chapter started to feel like torture. Absolute crap — the protagonist’s behavior became disgustingly exhausting.

At first, I felt fondness, pity, and a desire to protect him. But by the end, his personality — which was already teetering on the edge between... more>> annoyingly pathetic and innocently endearing — suddenly just turned dumb as hell. :D <<less

This isn't angst. It's a misunderstanding-fest

I don't care what the others say, but a sad backstory, backed with hurt feelings, and every known contrived misunderstanding plot line to milk it, doesn't qualify it as angst. If your heart feels for MC, that's great, but that isn't a qualifier for angst. Story has good premise. However 110 chapters of potential basically builds up for a runaway arc where the author decides to milk out an whooping 80 chapters born out of a singular misunderstanding (don't worry the misunderstandings multiples!). Take... more>> note there is a total of 202 chapters in the main story. So 110 to get you invested + 80 of milking the absolute the life out the misunderstanding + 12 to close it up 🥴 The plot after Ch.110 just disappears for what is essentially a lot of filler to drag the misunderstanding out. The ending is anticlimatic and meh as best, and honestly not worth the 202 chapters even without the misunderstanding slop. I did not read the side stories. After sloughing through the misunderstandings, and the terrible payoff at the end, I've lost all interest in the characters.

I came for guideverse, instead I got tricked into reading a misunderstanding-fest that somehow rivals those cheesy Chinese MCxCEO novels with all the fillers. At least the chinese ones are upfront with it, in this novel they trick you with 110 of normal chapters first to get you invested. <<less

The premise is quite interesting but the story itself is very cliché and predictable. The typical trope of timid, naive and underprivileged Guide x cunning, extremely powerful Esper is very much in play here. The story could still have been very interesting if not for the fact that the plot is mostly moved along due to the brainlessness of the MC. Jin Hyoseop is your typical yaoi Guide uke. He has low self esteem, past trauma and is desperate for love. His most annoying characteristic of all is that he... more>> takes everything at face value, in spite of strong evidence to the contrary. His entire personality can be summed up in one word, passive. Although he is the main character, he rarely takes the initiative in anything and when he finally does, its always for the wrong reasons. Overall he's a rather boring protagonist who gets very little character development till the very end. On the other hand, the ML and his guild mates start out as the most interesting part of novel but sadly, the other Espers of the guild are quickly reduced to cardboard side characters without much depth or personality.

The novel as a whole while entertaining enough, doesn't really have much else to offer beyond its initial premise. Once the mystery of the guild is solved fairly early on, the rest of the novel consists only of self-inflicted suffering due to miscommunication so bad, the author had to resort to deus ex machina to keep the plot going. I neither recommend nor discourage other readers from trying out this novel. It really comes down to what type of protagonist you prefer. <<less

Haters shut up. Real angst hurt comfort enjoyers unite.

Honestly I liked this novel. Premise was super good. I think the misunderstandings (one was a bit cliche I’ll admit) were quite understandable given the background of the main character and the main lead.

Jin is the MC and he’s a S-class guide. Lowkey got a crazy past that gets hinted at but it takes until like 130 or something for it to actually get explained - but luckily it’s hinted at enough that by the time it’s explained, you’re not like OMG... more>> why did it take so long but you’re like ohhh so THOSE are the details. I really liked how his background was slowly revealed and incorporated into his personality actually. It was incredibly formative to his interactions with the ML.

ML is Andante. Also a great past. Less mysterious imo and more straightforward. He’s framed as a mystery and stuff but imo the more compelling mystery is the MC - as it should be. Andante has a crazy personality (literally) and he’s got incredibly ML syndrome. BUT not in a cliche way but in a ‘I’ve always got what I’ve wanted and I have the ability to back it up’ way. He also has real flaws that the author did a good job of establishing steady character growth over.

I will say I enjoyed the theme of character growth the most. The ups and downs in the relationship, while frustrating to others, were quite realistic. Real misunderstandings. Yeah people don’t always communicate the way you want and is that not abundantly clear from how they interact with another?

My only gripe genuinely is that the side characters I loved so much in the beginning kind of got left behind towards the latter half of the novel in the frenzy between the ML and MC.

anyway, very classic hurt comfort angst misunderstandings novel. Read if you like puppy MCs. <<less

Totally agree with Justpassingt's review. IMO, The story starts off good, interesting plot, even if it's slow paced, and I actually didn't mind. But midway, it just falls apart. Even Ridibooks reviews gave up halfway. If you're into angst with endless misunderstandings and little character development of the MC, go for it.

First, the story starts strong, but once the ML and the guild members fulfill their purpose in the dungeon, it just gets boring. The plot stops progressing. The initial premise is the only thing that was there, and the... more>> misunderstanding of the MC on the ml. Now, about the MC, he has trauma, it's obvious, which explains why he's so eager to guide the guild members.

He doesn't want to be blamed if something happens to them.
Spoiler

He was manipulated, ab*sed, starved, isolated and imprisoned. He avoids physical touch because of the trauma another esper left him. If not for the kind Esper who lent him a hand and sacrificed himself, the MC would never have been able to leave that place.

[collapse]

Let's talk about the MC,
Spoiler

running away from the ml

[collapse]

Spoiler

This was his first time running away, his decision to leave the ML makes sense. Their relationship didn't even start with mutual feelings, it was all for the guild's benefit and the ML's convenience.

Plus, they have phones, so I don't understand why the ML didn't just contact him or clearly explain why he brought another guide into the guild. Even when he did, his explanation wasn't specific. That's why the ML deserved to be left behind. He should've confessed and been honest from the start, giving the MC the reassurance he deserved. This all happened after the guild members completed the mission they had been hoping to achieve by going into dangerous dungeons.
[collapse]

Spoiler

The MC was eventually found by the ML, and I think it was months later (though I'm not entirely sure). After that, the ML began to show obsessive behavior, exactly what the MC feared most. This is why, even though the ML expected them to talk and promised to wait, the MC ran away again. He was afraid of getting hurt all over again.

[collapse]

The ML's chasing arc? Yeah, deserved, but
Spoiler

BUT it got dragged out unnecessarily when the MC joined Shin Haechang. As for the MC, he's still gullible and passive. This is where I feel the MC's trauma doesn't give him a free pass. After all, the story dragged out despite the ML redeeming himself by being pathetic and chasing the MC multiple times, just to prolonged the story. He communicated with him, but MC is close-minded, it was MC's personality. He was easy to manipulate, and it didn't change throughout the story, (side stories yes) not when the pieces were coming together. Only he started to realise he was wrong, and even if he did, it was still ML who did everything to reconcile their relationship. And mind you? The ML doesn't know about his trauma history because he respects about the MC's decision to said not to. It's really frustrating how the MC trusts Shin Haechang (others) over people he's known longer. Like bruh you said you won't

[collapse]

The ML also has trauma, which is pretty obvious.
Spoiler

He's reluctant to guide, yet he sleeps around, whether because he wants to or because he doesn't have a choice to be guide. He's a pe*vert and manipulative. Although he's in a relationship with the MC, it was only to keep the MC in the guild not because he likes him romantically. He's willing to do anything for the sake of their goal.

Later, he falls in love with the MC because the MC reminds him of his brother. MC isn't afraid of the consequences of his ability to reverse guide. They also have that scent, like the Omegaverse. They are the only one who can smell it. But if it's strong, others can smells them.. Also their very good compatibility.
[collapse]

The only fun part for me in the novel (main story) was the ML's groveling arc. The only reason why I keep reading depsite the fact that it was dragged out. ML being manipulative, he's still rational compared to other MLs in similar stories. He has the best chasing arc <<less

When the esper doesn't want to make his guide wait so he clears a S ranked dangerous dungeon in 3minutes... 😍

I like this novel a lot. Perfect blend of pining, drama, romance, teasing, every chapter keeps me hooked. It feels like a R-15 novel, so spicy although it's not explicit.

Not a reverse harem. Andante is male lead, he is the flirty type done well. He has his own backstory that goes well and is possessive to MC although it takes a while for him to realize his feelings. Cue the... more>> wife-chasing and grovelling.

Main character, Hyoseop is a cutie patootie who has some trauma that led him to have difficulties with his feelings and he is the blank face type. Nevertheless he's kindhearted and upright, I like this perfect match with a blackhearted man like Andante. 🤭

It's a good read, the side stories also have an interesting twist. There's a manga which you can also check out. Overall it's a fun guideverse story. 10/10 I will be rereading this again.

If you want similar protagonist, he is like Du Ze from The Reader and Protagonist Must be in Love. <<less

im no where near finished but I think a lot of you lack empathy and basic understanding of physiologically damaged characters. The amount of people 1. Calling the author a moron and 2. Completely disregarding hyoseop's decisions and thinking is insane!! I'm not saying he's completely off the hook for a some things he's done and I don't think he's s*upid like many people suggest, but seriously come on lol. I think it's poor execution on what the author was trying to pull + it got dragged out for too... more>> long and I too got extremely frustrated and annoyed but when you have characters susceptible to mental breakdowns due to trauma idk what to tell you. You either understand or you don't and unfortunately a lot of you just don't. Both main characters have major flaws which aren't necessarily considered horrible but due to the writing it kinda makes them both feel insufferable at times which I see. Also wth is up with everyone being negative all the time in the comments man yall will be okay <<less

I give this novel a 4/5.

This novel is as typical as one of this genre can be, with a very naive, timid, and traumatized MC x a cunning, manipulative but powerful Esper ML. The plot dvelve around trauma of both main characters and uses it as the main drive for the angst that is happening between the MC and ML.

I think that the portrayal of the characters actions due to trauma was well portrayed because it is really somethings that mess people up and cause them to do unmoral things,... more>> like the ML dislike in receiving guiding alongside his manipulative and obsessive behavior later on and MC's naive behavior with his stubborness in trying to give guiding to ML. Although I won't lie, while this is definitely an angst novel with the tag of Naive character and unrequited love, I stopped counting the numerous times where I face-palmed and sigh, but I just constantly reminded myself that the tag was clear and that's how angst work, to get us worked up lol.

I won't spoil much and will only say that the MC is really naive thus it shouldn't be a surprise if he appeared s*upid or hopeless in his way of making judgements, part of me understood since it's a reflection of how little he knows about healthy relationship, you can even see him as a sheltered grown up child because he was locked up and isolated. And well the ML is the ML, obsession explained because of 'a late epiphany in understanding his love for MC', manipulative because of his illegal work where cunningness is needed, and his coldness in getting guided from trauma. So yes we can't expect them to have a rosy and healthy relationship. They are messed up.

That's my take on this novel. It's okay to give it a try, if you're here for angst and misunderstanding it's a good place for you. For those that expect things to be better, it'll be so, at the ending. And if you can switch off your rational brain and just read it at face value like our MC, you mighy even enjoy it.

Some part in this novel is indeed lacking, but it's enjoyable nonetheless. <<less

Another story set in the guideverse. Jin Hyoseop is a S-rank guide with a shadowy past who's just trying to keep his head down and get through life quietly. By pure coincidence he ends up in a mysterious guild with a bunch of suspicious C-rank members led by the charismatic esper Andante, and thus, Hyoseop's goal for a quiet life gets blown up.

Honestly, the one and only plot of this story is quite forced. It's basically because MC and ML aren't upfront with each other, and everything devolves from there.... more>> The MC is pretty frustrating: he takes everything at face value, never questions anything, and continuously makes the worst decisions possible while under the wrong impression. All of this just further complicates the misunderstandings between the two main characters in order for the plot to progress. Of course, the MC's actions are explained away by trauma (insert some sparkles). For some reason the author also threw in some omega-verse like bits where
Spoiler

the MC and ML both emit 'scents' aka pheromones which only the other can smell. They also go into heats. I have no idea where the author was going with that bit of plot or if it was just another device to show that MC and ML are supposed to be perfect for each other.

[collapse]

If you're down to slog through more than 100 chapters of main character angst which could have been resolved by one conversation, this is the story for you. That being said though, if you're able to turn off your brain for a little bit you'd probably be able to enjoy it. I still gave it three stars because I was hooked enough to read through to the end just to see how the characters resolve everything. Eye-rolling spoiler alert:
Spoiler

ML basically does a background check on MC so he figures out MC's trauma. Then they have a pretty anti-climatic conversation. The end.

Started out good—so good that I paid for the newest chapters. Then it fell off so hard that I regretted every penny. It had every cliche and misunderstanding that it could possibly manage. The only things lacking was world building and the lack of delving into the side characters' life.

Otherwise, the writing is good. Cliche may it be but still quite nice to read. Most ppl comment badly on MC but considering his past, he will naturally be timid in most stuff. He is plenty strong in my aspect though. I can completely understand his character so I really really love him.

The character development was pretty good that, I did not dislike the ML which is a rare case. I really... more>> liked this novel despite the flaws it had. It's not 'The Best' but for me it's definitely one of the better ones I'd have regretted to miss out.

I don't get people hating on the MC. Maybe because I'm quite similar to him but my personality is worse off in the 'courage' department, I rather think the MC is admirable. He's naive, not s*upid and it's hard to change the personality when he was constantly demeaned making him lack self-confidence. Takes one to know one I guess... He gets better only at the end but I'm glad that he got better at least at the end. <<less

Honestly many of the reviews are being unjustly harsh considering MC actions can be justified through his past.

Spoiler

think people are underestimating the lack of proper human intercation MC had growing up. His earliest years are in racist orphanage. His teens are being groomed by a abusive guild who kept literally totally isolated for 4 of those years plus the threats of r*pe.

Honestly MC is a very sweet cinnamon roll. His refusal to talk with ML was annoying tho. Do think his sheer newness to the world should have been explored more and something the other characters could have picked up on espcially ml.

Finally the separation got drawn on for literally no reason. And MC was getting dumb seeing mp dying yet still thinking he isn't needed. Deadass bro got him killed.

Kinda liked it and kinda didn't. They are so bad at communicating. The misunderstandings got so bad and it was just one clear conversation away from clearing it all up. Kinda get frustrated with the MC, he's sweet but kinda flippin dumb. Because of his past we can see why he's so naive and ignorant of the world, but at the same time I would think he would be a lot more guarded and mistrusting of others. His past is not recent by the time we get to the present... more>> story, he should have learned how the world works and that people are just not very trust worthy there. But, he's so naive that its almost like his past-self was transported to the present. The ML is a manipulative yandere dick. Shit, my favorite character was the "love" rival. He's a green tea bit*h but I love him, he was looking out more for MC than anyone else. I would have preferred if it had ended as guide x guide than the og pairing. They are terrible together. By the end and reading a few chapters if the side story and it seems that communication is still a problem and going into dub con territory. <<less

This is: THE MISUNDERSTANDINGS AND LACK OF COMMUNICATION THE NOVEL so if YOU DON'T LIKE misunderstandings, this novel isn't for you. Go to the next one. Trust me.

Don't rate it 3/5 if you have the tags MISUNDERSTANDINGS and manipulative character right fking there!!!!!!

That being said:

... more>> 1-120+ chaps I couldn't stop reading and then...

After the dungeon clear there are some filler chapters that I consider totally unnecessary!!!!!!

Please just kill Tina. I hate her. Grow up! You're fcking 14!!!!!!! Not 7!!!!!

Hold on until the chapters 150+ and it'll get better again, and you won't be able to stop reading again 😂

Spoiler

Oh, the MC's past is just 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔 you'll forgive him everything after you go through those chapters. Andante being the one with more emotional intelligence will take the fault for the lack of communication hahahaha I mean, just tell to your low self-esteem guide that you are doing experiments. It isn't hard, is it?

[collapse]

Ren: I hope you'll transmigrate to another novel, get to be the ML and find love and happiness. You're an angel.

Well I knew this novel from the webtoon and then because I grew curious I started to binge reading it from around chapter 100 until the end of the main story at just half a day.

First of all I am a fan of guide verse AND I also a fan of angsty plot. Where there is so many misunderstanding. Where both of the pair feels hurt. So I have read bits of the spoiler where it says the author are dragging the misunderstanding too long. For now I completely agree... more>> with that.

At first 20 or 30 chapter was fine. It was a good. But it become too cliche because the misunderstanding keep piling up because of the other bad character. It keeps piling up one by one to the point I have to say the MC is dumb. I rarely hate MC. Instead I always like the MC. But this one? Meh, I have too say I'm not really fond of dumb MC.

Although well the story itself it's not quite bad. And I don't really hate the MC. But maybe I'll not finished the side story. This is what usually happen for most novel. After the conflict is done. The climax is finished. And they become a pair, it usually get boring. <<less

I think Hyoseop should have been given the opportunity to function in a successful guild, away from onaip and andante, developing his ability. Remember Onaip was still traumatized by the death of their previous guide, and you could feel that. Especially the way some of them treated him (synthy, I believe?).

I think Andante, being an absolute pr**k, got his just desserts, chasing after Hyoseop and even thinking he’d passed away. Especially, because it I was initially difficult to believe in his feelings towards Hyoseop since they magically appeared after his first successful guiding.

[collapse]

it’s just a hard pill to swallow, because all this comes at that inferiority complex, Salieri-like MF’er getting his way. He successfully manipulates everyone and it was annoying to watch.

the real weak part to me in the story and the reason I’ve removed a star is how they just waved away Hyoseop‘s trauma—we don’t get to see Andante learn of his past. He just says something like, “oh yeah I had someone look into you” what Hyoseop went through is so reflective of how he acts

to finally manage to communicate with one another. The plot really was only held up by the misunderstanding, so I suppose it makes sense to have it extended for so long, but after a certain point it really felt like the author was just drawing it out for the word count.

The characters themselves are somewhat interesting, as the MC does have good reasons for being as withdrawn as he is, and the ML does have his own reasons as well for not wanting guiding, but there really was no reason for the ML to have been as avoidant as he was with the MC. I feel like this novel could have been 100 chapters shorter and much less frustrating to read had the author not added so many unnecessary moments of conflict and miscommunication. Would not recommend for a relaxing read, but it is a quite easy read given that there isn't much to the plot beyond the character relationships, and I was able to finish it all in basically a few hours, so in that sense, at least the frustration was minimized in real time!

There is also a second male lead type with the other guild leader, and the way he comes onto MC is quite off-putting, as the MC kind of just allows it to happen. I really don't like when drama like this is added to novels, as there really was enough conflict within the two protagonists internal dramas to make up enough plot without having to add in a third party. Rather than a mutual redemption story, this moreso felt like a mutual pain story, as the two of them just continuously tortured one another with their lack of communication. I really was so tired reading this, but needing to see the resolution kept me going until the end. <<less

First of all, I read the manhwa—it was quite interesting, and I ended up following the novel afterward.

I like the concept. The red-flag ML was just so-so for me, but what really made me pause the novel for a while was the chasing arc. It felt a bit too dragged out, with misunderstandings piling up like a mountain. And when the MC finally learned the truth, the moment felt anticlimactic—it just didn’t hit the way I hoped it would.

That said, as someone who enjoys angst and slice-of-life stories, I’d still... more>> recommend this novel. I just wouldn’t give it a full 5 stars—it didn’t feel like a 5 for me.

The MC’s past is painful and traumatic, but instead of confronting it, he buries it deep inside, which only leads to more misunderstandings. He’s incredibly selfless, willing to do anything just to be accepted as part of the guild. Meanwhile, the ML’s obsessive behavior honestly terrified the poor MC.

The premise? Good.

The execution? Also good.

The reconciliation part? Just not what I expected.

The translation? Excellent

Anyway, that’s my review. Others might have a different take on it.

Now I need to find a new novel to dive into since this one’s finished.

Happy reading, everyone! <<less

I really love angsty novels, but I couldn't bring myself to rank this 5/5. I felt like the ML changed completely without any real reason, the misunderstandings in the second half were just outrageous and so annoying, and the "villain" characters weren't that great or smart. I still really liked it and would probably read again, but it's not the best thing ever written.
