The S-Classes That I Raised

Description

An utterly useless, pathetic F-Rank older brother who only drags down his successful S-Rank younger brother.

After living a messed-up life, eventually dragging even my brother’s life down with me, I was given the title after my regression:

‘Perfect Nurturer.’

Fine, this time, I’ll just stay quiet and support those brilliant guys from the shadows.

Or so I thought, but the S-Ranks are acting a little strange.

Exactly what you'd expect from the golden age of Korean dungeon LNs, it's just as high quality as all the others. Quite enjoy it because it stars the incredibly rare support hero and the requirements to use his abilities to grow others lead to quite funny situations. The ML is a decent guy that doesn't care about being big he just wants to help his brother and some other strong people grow so they can save the world and he can live a simple calm life with his savings.

Simply by the aspect of being more side character-oriented with a few interesting character dynamics, this story already has a lot going for it. However, the main selling point for me was the fact that it put explores a new system-oriented world without shoving its alienness (there is a better word for it but I cannot think of it) down the readers throat. A lot of the dungeon/system elements are blended in the world much better than when normally applied and overall the read (despite a good but realistically middle-level... more>> translation quality) is quite enjoyable. I look forward to seeing where the story goes.

This story is an absolute gem. It's a bit rough at first, and I had to re-read the first five or six chapters about three times before everything clicked, but when it did - wow!

Maybe it's because I'm a bit of an idiot, but it honestly took re-reading those first few chapters to get an understanding of the basic plot and characters. The translator did a fantastic job, it's just that there are a lot of things happening in quick succession in the beginning, and it's a little bit confusing... more>> to have so much information squished into such a (relatively) small space.

The basic gist is that the MC (from his POV at least, and we don't know yet if he's an unreliable narrator or not) is a bit of a jerk, and his younger brother dies protecting him. He manages to go back in time five years and decides to be a better person, and do better things. The way he goes about it is wonderfully entertaining, and the butterfly effect of every action he takes is a delight to discover.

The best parts of this story though are the interactions our MC has with the other characters. This story is rich with characters that have their own distinct personalities, and ways of interacting with our MC. In a word, this story is entertaining. Ridiculously entertaining. I can't wait to see where this story ends up taking us. <<less

Have to sit down and write a review because I love this story so much. I’ve stuck by it for a quite a while. For much of the story, my feelings were quite mild. I read the webcomic and I also read much of the webnovel. I took breaks. I stopped showing interest. But I kept coming back.

For me, there is a certain charm that kept me going. And while no, it certainly doesn’t have the same qualities of other dungeon novels where the MC is just so clever and... more>> witty and awes people with his OP offensive powers and endless brain, this MC is strong but in a different way.

He’s had his own hurdles to overcome and past cynicisms that guided him, but he is also a nurturer at heart. There is strength in the way he cares for others and there is strength in the way they care for him back.

That is not to say he isn’t powerful in other ways. He has his own set of cheats that give him a leg up despite being an F-class. But he is also an intensely loyal individual who will do anything to care for the people he loves. And that’s what I kept coming back for.

So, enjoy it or not, that depends on what you’re looking for in a novel. And luckily this was just what I was looking for. <<less

Is pretty fun, the main character is funny in his own way, I also like that there seems to be an intent to keep him weak, at least as far as I've seen. The characters are cute and unique, although I wish the flow of development with them was a bit better. The timing is also pretty odd. As of now only 2 months have technically passed in the novel, but it definitely feels like more time has passed. The events seem to be laid out in the narrative as... more>> happening one after another without a single break, but it doesn't read like that

Honestly the only thing I do dislike is how he doesn't get angry, not just with his brother but in general. These people do literally anything to him and he's at best annoyed by it. It gets frustrating to read when he says "I'm not angry" for the upteenth time and you're sitting there in a pissed off haze going "why not?!" because every right to be

I honestly don't know if id call the novel queerbait, theres some scenes which have definite undertones, but there isnt a romance subplot with basically any of the characters to the MC. And those kind of stories arent that bad either

Now I'm not sure what happened, but likely the og translators got some form of cease and desist and they took down the original translation.

Unfortunately the people who took it up are... Asian Hobbyist who are well know for their bad quality and being specifically in it to make money, I hate being a person who complains about something freely provided, but the people who translate this have a patreon, they are getting money for this and honestly the quality given pisses me off. It seems clear to me that it's a basic direct translation with minimal editing. The readability is just bad, and it's not clear what is even happening.

It's a pity because it was pretty fun before this. If you can put up with it, do your best. Otherwise maybe petition a translation group to pick it up from where the first group left off <<less

So ever since I began to read this novel as I got deeper in I began to realise that the main character's ability was the cause for the extreme reactions of those who received his keyword which makes sense seeing as his ability is activated under certain circumstances, the power bonds his victims, if you will, to him almost like imprinting and it's insane how no one has commented about this seeing as the author gave us the perspective of a persons immediate psychological reaction to his ability.

I mean perfect... more>> strangers had an almost immediate clingly reaction and this chapter even specifically goes into detail about how Kim Sunghan felt like the main character was the only person in the whole world he could trust and his whole perspective took on a rose-tinted view when the ability took its full effect.

Going forward and realizing this is going to change my whole perspective because I am so into found family fiction but highkey its more like a cult in the way if you look closely and notice the details from outside the MC's perception you can see the influence his ability has on others and I do wonder if this will affect the plot later on but definitely interesting but also kind of horrifying.

Other subtle examples like how after his regression and saying the keywords 'I love you' to his brother who for him had just been in a fight with the past MC immediately became docile. The reactions are all subtle enough to be explained away by the situations like the brocon who is startled but happy to receive an I love you from my brother, which makes me believe the psychological effect doesn't brainwash the person or steal they're free will it does overpower people below the legendary level but only influences to a certain degree like a reverse dragon scale or c**nk in the armor, the person isnt completly whitewashed of self-control or self only feels a sense of connection to MC.

Spoiler

Kim Sunghan excerpt describes the effect and how his mind began to leap from the image of His Grandfather the only person who made him feel loved blending into the picture of the MC. Even describes how he knows the MC isn't his grandfather but the tempation to feel safe to be loved was enough for him to give in to the feeling even though it went against his conscious mind.

'Looking at the extremely young[3] youth, he remembered the seventy-year-old elder. It was to the point of mixing them up.

But that strange feeling of distance quickly disappeared as if erased with great strength.

Leaving only the deep feelings for the elder who was his excellent guardian.'

I totally love and recommend this novel. At first I kinda confused of the world-building in the first chapter but in the following chapters it get clear enough. I read it until the last-updated and I hope it wasn't discontinued! This novel is worth reading, it suits my taste so well. It's not about killing villain and become superpower or anything but I think it's focused on characters-growth and relationship. The MC (Yoojin) is very adore towards his brother that he regressing to save him. The more I read the... more>> stronger my feelings towards the characters in this novel. I'm very bad at expressing my impression but believe me I really love this novel whole-hearthedly

Things that often makes me so confused in this novel is the way the paragraph jump on another situations without so much distinctions. I found myself muttering like "Huh? Aren't we just in place A before? Why suddenly we're here" like, it's so unclear the way it describe the shift-situation (not all ofc but I think it's many enough).

Fortunately it's just get translated until ch 175 when there's actually more, 600+ ch (still ongoing). I hope it get continued:') I love this novel so much! I'm here after ORV I love them both🤍 <<less

Honestly, I do not understand the low ratings for this book. I mean, I do understand but it still confuses me. This is gonna be a long arse review so please bear with me.

The premise of him regressing is so that he doesn't do s*upid sh*ts (i.e. Doing s*upid decisions and being a f*cking headache to his younger brother) and to make sure that his brother doesn't die all over again. Sure, it does has its resemblance in ORV with all the regression and dungeon and monsters and sh*t and... more>> is also kind of similar towards TFC with his growing harem (don't take it seriously) and being a slacker, but this story has its elements on its own. I love that even if people (the characters) wanted him to stand out and praise him for his (future) knowledge, he always makes sure that he's only supporting the S-Class or the main Hereos and creates opportunities for them to grow. I also love the fact that without his skills, knowledge of the future, or his powers, he's an ordinary human who is a coward and spineless with a huge inferiority complex towards his younger brother. It makes him more real. His fears and inferiority complex make it more relatable especially in this changing world or I guess that's just me. I also love how he's so awkward with people, has a strong resolve to make sure that he stays as a slacker and leech off of his brother's wealth (with the latter being so happy about it), and how he struggles when he says the keyword to make the S-Class become stronger. I also love the side characters! ^^ They are so well made that I'd sometimes think they should be part of the main cast lineup. The jokes are funny and not overused and some are cringey as heck (though the MC cringes at it too, so everything's well).

But I also understand and acknowledge that there are problems in the novel (give me a novel that's so well-made that you can't criticize it for being anything but perfect). Such as (1) racism against Japanese people and Japan (though I understand the sentiments of the Korean people, I still got uncomfortable reading it) though thankfully, it's not on most chapters, (2) the side characters, who are either Unawakened people who are S-Class or tr*sh who has potential to be S-Class, are too trusting towards the MC but I guess that's the side effects of the skill when he uses it on a target, and (3) not respecting the MC's boundaries or personal space and his opinions. The last one irked me the most in the book, as a person who loves my personal space so much, I wanted him to have a breathing space but I guess the MC being the MC (although he minds his personal space and freedom so much), makes sure to word it carefully so that his targets don't misunderstand him and make his hard work go to waste. But honestly other than that, I don't see anything for the low ratings for this book. The novel needs a lot more recognition and love, not hate just because it has elements that are similar to other popular stories (ORV & TFC) or just because it does not suit your taste.

I'm still in the middle chapters but this book definitely passed my humor. I honestly love it, I'm still confused about why people are leaving bad ratings and reviews about this novel. I'm gonna rewrite my review after I read the complete version of the book and we'll wait and see if my opinions and views would still be the same. <<less

I was considering between 3 and 4 stars. But since it suits my taste, I’ll give it a 4-star.

This is not a perfect story and there’re a lot of issues. For example, the MC is slack of and has no clear goal. At first he wanted to raise lots of S- classes, then he decided it’s better to raised pet S-classes, then again, he knew that to take his brother’s body (first life) back and prevent world destruction he’d need lot of S-classes with strong stats so he tried to... more>> level them up. But maybe the author is too lazy to think of new characters and new skills so later on, the story just revolve some significant S-classes. It’d be better if the author didn’t state goal to collect and raise 50 S-classes from the beginning then just mention about 5-10 of them. Also, the author tried hard to make to story epic and added more plot twists. But everything become more complicated. With the interference of the “gods”, it makes things harder to control. And the younger brother’s body (first life). The MC said he wanted it back. Understandable but for what? Like... what about the current (second life) brother? Are you going to show him his dead body? Why not let go and enjoy the present? Anyway, sometimes I wonder how the author can solve every twists in the story.

Still, the story has some good things. Normally a story will develop into relationship route or career route. The career route here is messed up. But the relationship route is really nice. I enjoy the moments and memories between the MC and his brother. People can only see that the younger brother is obsessed with and overprotective of the MC but the MC is actually a brother complex too. They really care for each other but don’t know how to show it. Other side characters also have their past and circumstance. And they’re all get better thanks to the MC. I like it when the S-classes are all adore/ obsessed with the MC. Yes, partly because of the skills. But mainly because of the MC himself. It’s explained that the S-Classes are different from normal people from birth. They are true geniuses with gifted talent. This allows them to succeed easier. So, they’ll find life boring and cannot build relationships with other easily. And the MC is the only one who willing to step forward and start a relationship with them first. That’s why they’re all interested in him.

Another the thing is the BL vibe in this story. I know some don’t like it. But I love it :) so I’ll just give it a 4-star <<less

It's a well crafted story in a fresh trope. I enjoy regression stories where the MC doesn't have all the cards and has to be socially strong instead of physically. However with this series I felt they held back a little to much on everything.

It speaks to the quality of the novel when my complaint is I wanted more of everything. I liked all the characters but they're too one-dimensional to love. I enjoyed all the scenarios but none of them gripped me like the kidnapping close to the start.... more>> His powers are cool but he doesn't go all in on either finding talent or raising pets.

I could sum up the issues with how many conflicts and conversations are repeated. How many times does he get kidnapped or have a conversation with his brother about safety. Or the guild leader talking about how he is an item or him talking about raising peoples 'kids'. None of these are bad or uninteresting but each one has been used a minimum of 5 times in 160 chapters (3 kidnapping but you get the idea).

I would recommend this to fans of the trope (tr*sh Count, RIM) and people looking for light hearted stories. I wish they took more liberties with the story and experimented but what can you do? <<less

I think the novel has it's strengths, but it also has some very obvious shortcomings. I think the biggest problem is that the author seems to have changed the focus/how he wants to tell the story after the novel has been established. This changes the MC's attitude and I think the early relationships he makes and the motivations he has change too. The power/skill system is a complete mess and is a big issue as well. The heavy nationalism is also a bit of a turn off.

The strengths of the... more>> novel, are the drama and bromance. It's got some good character interactions and it's not only with just the MC. As a side-effect of the MC's main skill, there is also s*xual tension with basically all the characters. I think it's best to think of this as a drama focused novel set in an action world because the best mysteries and plot points center around characters interactions rather than the combat or the original motivations of the MC. <<less

Every novel has their own trope. For Korean novel, the general trope is that the male lead will become godlike and being revered by everyone everywhere. That trope is really strong here, where the story even provide a reason for everyone to love MC- to the point where the side characters didn't have any development for them. You would only find character development when the MC decided to save another character and put them in to his care. After that the character will pop out here and there, but their... more>> state will stay the same. Which is a shame, really. It's the same with other korean novel. The novel exist only from and for the MC. The others are just accessories to make him looks better.

As several other mentioned, the MC changed his focus several times from living peacefully, to raising beast, to finding as many S rank hunter as possible. Changing focus is actually pretty usual, but the problem here is that the protagonist and the story lack a direction in which the plot need to move into. So what happened is, the reader are bombed with characters introduction and lots of event which doesn't seem to be connected at all.

All the rant aside, this is still an interesting read. It just can't live to people's expectation. <<less

Average at most, is not as good as tr*sh of the count but I can understand why some people get the similarity with that novel but lacks the complexity and well-written characters seen with our beloved read-head.

It's not bad at all it can be entertaining if you don't want something complex.

I like it so far. The first few chapters were rough. The MC initially was unlikable, being a giant ball of jealousy and incompetence. However, I like how the reader can see his attempts to change into a better person. By around chapter 15 this has become one of the series I look forward to most when I see it updated.

It's entertaining enough..! The main theme is unconditional love which warms my heart. It's not perfect love- the plot is super driven by miscommunication- but they recognize a lot of it is due to immaturity and the chaos of a changing world. The miscommunication gets tiresome, but I forgive it since it does lead to a lot of heartfelt moments. All the side characters are interesting in their own right and have meaningful interactions with the MC. The chapters that switch to the side character POVs are fun.

Novel also delves... more>> into a lot of mental conditions without explicitly naming them. The MC has a lot of anxiety and a warped self-perception. Everyone he loves is super strong so no one worries for them- except for him. He wants to protect them and doesn't feel good enough since he's physically weak, but can't see they all thrive from his unconditional love... Which he also feels guilty about since he feels like he's using them. Once again, gets tiresome, especially since it makes the MC an unreliable narrator and you have to deal with all his self-hate thoughts, but the reward is heartfelt.

I'm really into the obsessive yandere brocon that never turns romantic lol.
Spoiler

MC's brother/Yuhyun is pretty high on the sociopathy spectrum. I think author does a good job of contrasting what is natural to him vs what is influenced by his environment. The biggest 'augh my heart!' moments are always around Yuhyun. ㅠㅠ First timeline his skill evolves into one structured around self harm while second regression timeline it is formed by unconditional love/acceptance. Siighhh. Main tagline is something like "who doesn't love being loved?" ㅠㅠ

There's a scene where little (<8yo) Yuhyun asks MC why he shouldn't just kill their neglectful parents. MC responds by apologizing to Yuhyun that their parents haven't given him enough love to prevent him from thinking that way. Yuhyun turns into a good egg bc of how his brother raised him. Sighhh.

[collapse]

Aaannd the main negative. Dang does the author have so much nationalism. I get it, but it's such a slog skipping through 20 chapters in a row of 'Japan sucks and is full of idiots who the MC play like a fiddle'!! Every time another country is mentioned I'm like here we go it's skimming time lol.

The MC also plans. A lot. I also skim through those chapters. The author writes action well and they're some of my favorite scenes... but please more showing and less 10 chapters in a row of MC about to execute his master plan. I also like indulging in winning protagonists but... it gets so cringey lol.

Also! The manhwa /really/ improves upon the novel. It condenses/ skips over all the overindulgent slog chapters, boosts the comedy, and conveys the emotional parts very well. Can't discredit the source material that set the manhwa up for success tho. (: <<less

There's a lot of stuff going in here. Obviously its not your typical "eat a pill, get a skill and save the world" type of story most seem to be expecting for some reason.

One thing I like about the novel is how author is hella wild with his ideas and still somehow finds a way to make a full circle with whatever they write.

Like other reviewers have already said, Yoojin's words and actions are contradicting. He's a unreliable narrator. You gotta look at the big picture if you want to... more>> figure out the story, rather than expecting the MC to feed it in your mouth.

Another thing I love about it is how you can click on a random chapter and still enjoy it because there's a good balance of older characters and newer characters. Author brings freshness to the table while still keeping the same nostalgic essence. Obviously it may not be the same for other people. But for me, I can make out the basic outline of the story atop my head pretty easily. Thats why this series remains one of my favourites. Easy to read, well mapped out, so freaking unhinged, and characters have dynamic background so they dont feel one dimensional.

Plus there's plenty female cast. Not for the sake of fanservice, not for the sake of acting like damsel in distress and also not for the sake of some tragic shock value. They're active members in the story.

The worldbuilding is pretty simple during the first chapters (looks like any other dungeon themed manhwa). Keep reading further and you'll realize that its pretty elaborate. <<less

very good novel but not one of the best.

- For people who wonder why Yoojin and yooyhun are so quick to make up, especially just by saying "i love you", it's because from the beginning yoohyun never hated/disrespected Yoojin. There's not a hint of dislike for his hyung. He loves Yoojin a lot. The love is so great that he has to leave Yoojin and pretend not to care about him (there's a reason for his actions). And for Yoojin, he initially misunderstood yoohyun so he hated him a little... more>> bit, but after seeing yoohyun's sacrifice in the dungeon, he finally understood yoohyun's feelings. That's why when Yoojin started approaching yoohyun again, they quickly made up.

- the concept of Class Hunter here is a bit different from other novels. In other novels, there may be no difference between S-class and F-Class except for their strength and skill. But here, class also affects their mental / instinct. The F-class can't stand side by side with the S-class, it can frighten them even traumatized them. Even though the S-Class doesn't do anything. Yoojin can stand between S-classes because he has Fear Resistance skill. Yoojin's not an OP MC, he's very weak. Even when he rides on a dragon (this is a spoiler) he can get hurt because the dragon scales are hard for normal human skin to endure. His skill, even if it's top level, he can't use it himself. Most are skill related to buff. That's why at first he was very careful because one mistake could offend a high-class hunter and could get him killed. Remember, basically Yoojin & other F-class is like any normal human being while high-class hunter is like a superhuman, and S-Class hunter is like a monster.

- misunderstanding & miscommunication between Yoojin & Yoohyun, that's pretty annoying. But don't worry, there's a time when Yoojin finally opened his heart and expressed his thoughts to yoohyun. And then they'll be more open to each other. If something bothers their minds, they'll say it instead of keeping it to themselves and become a misunderstanding.

- about Yoojin's regression, he can't tell anyone because it will affect and harm the world system (i won't tell why, because it's a major spoiler)

- Even though Yoojin's appearance is naive, he's not naive at all and even quite cunning. His level of cunning probably equals or even exceeds Sung hyunjae

- what is lacking in this novel is the skill of the character, which is not very clear. They don't explain in detail what the skill strengths of the characters fit into their class. Strangely I could see it at the manhwa, but in a novel that should be more detailed, it actually confused me. <<less

Normally I like the junk food, just for fun, yandere themed KN that just kinda throw interesting and quirky characters at you.

This, uh, this one isn't it.

You know those times when a series is being bad enough and an idea is being presented so hard that you can hear the author grunting while shoving it in? That is not a handful of scenes or ideas, but the whole plot of S classes. Most of the ideas feel crammed in and forced upon the reader as if the author is desperate... more>> to convince you that they really can write, just wait a chapter or two for them to finish this character skit.

It never can.

Read something else that commits to an idea or at the very least, fleshes them out. <<less

First read - ch36

I'd paused here because I wasn't into where the story was going, and I got back into it after like two years? When the translated chapters were up to 185.

CH 144 is where I'm currently stopped, and I like the story a lot more than I thought I would since the beginning left me a bit disappointed. It definitely picks up later.

Skimmed to ch186 but I'll be coming back after more chapters are translated.

I love it. More coherent review later.

Idk why I can't stop reading this even though I feel this one is nothing special. It was not bad and also not good, but overall I enjoyed this one tho.

THE THINGS THAT I LIKE:

    • the monsters that MC taming are cute!!! Chirpie is my fav!
    • MC is not an op, but he's a center of all people.
    • i like how the MC make other characters believe in him.
THE THINGS THAT I DONT REALLY LIKE:

    • the plot progress is too slow.
    • the MC always positioning himself in danger, he is too reckless. Tbh it was really annoying.
    • his lil bro is too over protective, but the two of them are really cute tho.
    • sometimes there's unnecessary plot, and the author like to repeat the detail of the story.
So far is 4/5 stars from me, but after reading the spoiler 3/5

its simple but also complicated, and feels like the author forcing something twist but ended up too mixed up.
