“Can’t I properly read stallion novels anymore!”

Shen Yuan transmigrated into someone who’d tormented the young male lead almost to death, the s*um villain Shen Qingqiu.

It must be known, the original Shen Qingqiu ended up being carved alive by his disciple, Luo Binghe, into a human stick, a human stick!

Ten thousand “f*ck your moms” rampaged through Shen Qingqiu’s heart:

“It’s not that I don’t want to cling to the male lead’s thighs, but who made him so f*cking black. The type who seeks thousand-fold retribution!”

Why have all the female lead’s scenes been forcibly given to him.

Why, as a s*um villain, does he need to constantly sacrifice himself, blocking knife and gun for the protagonist!

Shen Qingqiu: “…I think I can still save him, one more time.”

A really fun read. I wasn't really into the main couple at first, because their relationship is very one-sided in the beginning and SQQ's falling in love seemed a little forced to me. My actual ideal pairing was LQG x SQQ ww. But the ending was cute, although beware of the, frankly, horrible s*x scene. It was painful to read. Please. Use lots of lube and foreplay. Why would you subject your characters to that. Why.

It would have been a great read - at least a 4 - if the main point of this novel (romance) was done so much better. But before that - the reason why the main character does what he does isn't really well backed up imo:

Spoiler

"coolness points"? Why does it matter?

[collapse]

The MC doesn't actually have a good reason to do what he does, and the characters around him don't react at all to the radical personality change. But this is tolerable. However, what I couldn't handle was the ML! He's genuinely crazy and I feel like he really didn't have to be.

Spoiler

Just an example: it's implied that he tried to f*ck a corpse.

[collapse]

He's crazy that I can't even ship this guy with anyone because I feel genuinely bad for the MC who ends up with him (presumably. I couldn't handle the psychopathy and dipped halfway through the book). <<less

As usual for other novels. The first chapters are great haha. SQQ's thoughts are really entertaining. Imagine a stone-faced man, who's secretly always internally screaming. Most of what happens are misunderstandings, but I guess it's the novel's charm?

But I can't let off this novel that easy, can I? Here comes complaints and some criticism.

LBH & SQQ's relationship might be soft, adoring and #goals. It's a little toxic, especially after the Immortal Alliance Conference. But honestly, what the hell did I expect from the 'Male Yandere' tag? LBH is like a... more>> kid, who's stuck in a grown man's body. He is whipped. Although I still can't help but find ridiculousness from him immediately forgiving SQQ after what he had done because he protected him one time.

Also, MXTX has said that LQG & SQQ is canon. But other than a few scenes, I can't really see it (or that is just me being dense. Also excluding Succubi as it's an extra). If I wasn't aware of that small fact, I would never have guessed it lol. The same goes to MBJ and SQH. Again, not counting the extras. But we can fault SQQ for not noticing since we're reading from his POV (even if it's not first person). He is a bit oblivious.

I absolutely adore SQQ. Sarcasm always wins me over. But surprisingly, I like Yue Qingyuan a bit more. His fondness over SQQ is adorable. And I may be biased since this is my first transmigration novel, but I like this novel a lot. <<less

I love this extremely engaging novel. It doesn't follow the typical story of this sort of world. It's an easy to follow story despite having such hard to remember names (I speak Chinese yet I still remember Korean and Japanese names better). I loved the world-building, and whenever the main character points out a flaw in it, it just makes it funnier. I loved the personality of the main character, having a sharp tongue in mind constantly swearing while acting amicable on the outside. It makes him feel capable, unique,... more>> and all the more hilarious.

I actually like a lot of other characters in this novel. The main two have a very investing relationship that you never know what will happen. It's great, and keeps making me turn more pages to see what will happen.

The twist and turns of this novel are very risky yet oh so gratifying. It makes me so happy to reach the part of the novel where things start to happen. I love the MC, ML, and side characters but each twist in this novel makes each of these characters that much better. This novel was a great experience. <<less

Shout out to BC Novels for picking up this project and providing a beautiful translation.

At the time of this review, the translation's still ongoing, so I'm always elated to see the release of a new chapter. I've even re-read it from the beginning multiple times - partially to catch myself up to speed, mostly to relish the story again in all its ups, downs, and twists.

s*um Villain parodies stallion novels, specifically a badly-written stallion novel of quantity over quality, the sensational over the substantial, with gaping plot holes. Thankfully s*um... more>> Villain doesn't follow what it makes fun of and draws the reader into a very engaging story with complex, multi-faceted characters.

The characters! They're so dynamic, which helps the story feel robust. The author took a lot of time and care to breathe life into a large cast of personalities, which I really appreciate since it lets the main characters shine even more so.

I LOVE the main character, Shen Qingqiu.
Spoiler

He's clever, capable, heroic, and highly compassionate, but not to an inhumane degree. Lastly, he is hilarious and the biggest contributor to the comedy relief throughout s*um Villain. His sense of humor is rather sarcastic; his more exaggerated reactions are kept to himself and don't disrupt the flow of the story in a way that irritates me. A big plus is that very little comedy relief is built off of immersion-breaking banter between the MC and his system, which is seen in so many other system-binding stories. More often, humorous exchanges are woven between characters, but Shen Qingqiu makes a fine one-man show with his internal roaring.

[collapse]

Oh, Liu Binghe.
Spoiler

As the ML, he seemed to follow the archetype to a T, and at first read I actually didn't like his character. I found him overbearing and tyrannical, sometimes to an overwhelming degree, and his stickiness deterred me. But upon re-reading it I was able to simultaneously notice more subtleties in his development and appreciate the bigger picture (beyond Shen Qingqiu's PoV), and Liu Binghe really grew on me. I can't help but feel for him, this silly man.

[collapse]

It's hard for me to adequately describe the romance. That's definitely not to say there isn't any! Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe are very, very sweet, and they don't fit into the standard mold of MC/ML pairings, neither in appearance nor aptitude. Their relationship is slow-burning, but it goes beyond the usual attraction since they've invested much deeper affections along the way. So, to me, their growth is worth following. <<less

You will LOVE the main character, he adapts fast, has humor and keeps his composure when needed. The plot so far doesnt go around in circles and its a nice read. The translations are very well done and the footnotes help understand better what a particular phrase means for us who arent used to them.

Knowing what he must do in the future, Shen Qingqiu will still try to give the poor child ML a good future... Even if he must harm him greatly for it. Qingqiu says its for the... more>> sake of his future, but he cant stop himself from seeing Binghe and the others as real as himself, its not a book but a real world he is living in, so the decisions he takes are not rushed or half hearted. A very good read im willing to follow to the end.

A novel from the same autor is Mo Dao Zu Shi (Founder of Diabolism). Highly recommended if you want a more dramatic and darker themed BL set in a xianxia world. <<less

I feel like Shen Yuan spent more time fearing for his life while Luo Binghe fell deeper into dependence with him, so the development was one-sided at best and paced oddly (?) at most. Not to say that I dislike it, but the end-point feels like an exasperated acquiescence, like an adult relenting to a child throwing a tantrum. Still, can't deny that both parties are willing to go to lengths for each other, so that's something. My suspension of disbelief and threshold for ridiculousness is rather high so I... more>> don't really see any other glaring weakness that shorted the reading experience for me. This was my first step into this genre and I think it's a gentle, guiding hand at most, introducing me to some common tropes and concepts with the aid of Shen Yuan's comedic internal monologue. I like this book, even if just for the comedic parts or its second volume in the English release, and I like the side characters here, and how Airplane-bro's actual dream plot eventually fell into place with the plot holes filled, courteys of SQQ. I think it's still good despite its faults, and was an enjoyable read.

(very subjective rating lol don't @ me if your standards don't match mine, to each their own)

main characters → ★★★★★ (shen yuan alone is a delight and viewing this story through his very-deflective-lenses made it more bearable because I doubt the same can be said if it's through luo binghe's eyes)

side characters → ★★★★★ (sh*t man, it's a quick 5/5 just for liu qingge my beloved. okay no but for real, I like the side characters and that's enough for me to keep this at 5/5)

plot → ★★★★☆ (this is my first cn webnovel so obviously, it won't seem so cliche and overused just yet. even if the plot is so dog-blooded especially as a big picture from afar, I like minute details and the trope I like was executed so well sooooo....)

dynamic investment → ★★★☆☆ (it's cute, I like sticky characters but I'm more invested in the portrayal in fanworks and I'm sweeter on the bingqiu train because of those and not from what I remember from them in the actual novels so, 3/5)

pacing → ★★★★☆ (not bad, not bad, just wished we saw more of binghe in his white lotus years and saw more of cang qiong mountain sect during binghe's absence. it didn't drag imo, so that's great!)

overall satisfaction (aka how willing am I to reread this, consume fanworks, or actually keep the characters here and their world in my brain not as a stain to sneer on but to fondly recall?) → ★★★★☆ <<less

(First impression review before any analysis or re-reading)

This was MXTX first work, and this review is of seven seas danmei translation.

I think compared to other authors work, this one has a bit of a amateur feeling. The characters don't have the same depth, it feels a bit rushed, cliché etc...

Spoiler

also the smut scene where Luo Binghe just does him dry I cried so hard because damn. Does MXTX have some masochist fetish or what?!

[collapse]

I liked the references to some different TV show and so on, such as entering SEED mode. It made me want to see another modern influenced character by this author.

The novel was quite fast and sometimes felt rushed, things that didn't make sense or weren't explained, but overall I thought it was reasonably solid and an enjoyable read. Shen Qingqiu was random as heck, but the chaotic nature of everything was pretty fun, too.

Also, regarding the alleged noncon scene that seems to be very controversial in some circles:

Spoiler

Shen Qingqiu was entirely willing. He laid back and allowed. To claim this is a "r*pe" scene against SQQ is rather disingenuous.

I think the Luo Binghe's emotional progress is not relatable.
Spoiler

Why would he completely forget the bullying his original shizun gave him and love Shen Qingqiu completely like that?

Why has he never recalled that Shen Qingqiu once asked him if he's willing to endure physical & emotional hardship to get stronger? He only remembered how his shizun's words after that were contradicting.

Why after Shen Qingqiu gave him the fake jade pendant, he accepted without doubt why his shizun took it all along with him and not immediately returned to him when it's what he held dearest?

I'm actually feeling a bit unsatisfied after finishing this novel. Having previously read other MXTX novels I never imagined that this one would be so underwhelming. The general idea of the story was interesting. The MC has a good personality and his situation makes things entertaining but as the story progressed I never really felt a true connection between the MC & ml.... more>>
Spoiler

Even at the end of the main story I wasn't convinced that they shared mutual love. The ML was obsessed with the MC and the MC felt pity and fondness towards the ML but there was no romantic development. Even the one and only s*x scene didn't even feel right.

This is definitely not the worst story out there so I would still recommend reading it if you find it interesting. You may enjoy it more than I did. <<less

Out of all the MXTX novel. This one's my favourite. It's funny, the MC is so funny. Like you get to see how much of a mess and cringing Shen Yuan is in his mind. I like the protagonist. I don't really mind that there's not much on bingqiu's relationship. I feel like it's forced anyways and feels like for comedy sake. I just like the comedy and the protagonist.

It's funny how people think that MC is straight and doesnt love ml. At the very first few chapters, the way MC talked about the ML is basically saying "he's my favourite character" aka "he's my type". The only thing that prevent him from loving the ML is the fact that he couldnt accept that the ML is not just a character.

The unreliable narator is one thing that makes me love this story (despite it being his flaw). If you remove the narator and think about it, this is quite... more>> a tragic story.
Spoiler

The whole backstory, the fact that the airplane author cant write a story he likes and being forced into writing 1-dimensional trendy characters, and the whole timeskip angst.

[collapse]
The story sounds pretty comedic and when I first start reading it as a stress-relieved story, but later on the more I re-read the story, the more things that I picked up. That's what I like about unreliable narrator: you cant even trust it to be the mc's real emotion, you have to figure it out yourself what the MC actually feels and what actually is the tone of the story. <<less

This is honestly my fave out of the 3 popular MXTX novels, please don't hit me!

This story is funny, sometimes silly, sometimes tense. Overall a great story and well-written, with great characters all around.

SY character is very interesting, his inner monologues and the SQQ façade is a hilarious combination. LBH, the poor overgrown puppy, he just wants to be loved 😣

I also feel the world building is not too difficult to digest; pretty typical xian xia setting, not too heavy on lore, fighting, and God forbid, politics.

I didn't finish the novel because I was so intensely uncomfortable with how the ML and MC's relationship developed. I thought this novel was a grim satire making fun of tr*shy romance tropes, so I tried to ignore my negative feelings on master/disciple pairings. At some point, it evolved into a full on psychological horror. I love horror webnovels; I'll read them right before bed, close my eyes, and sleep perfectly fine.

But, I had to stop reading this novel. I think authors can write good stories with characters who are... more>> awful, terrible people. That said, it was too uncomfortable to read about how the ML made the MC act like a wounded, cornered animal over and over again, especially with the s*xual aspect of the ML. If they didn't actually become a couple, I would've been able to continue.

I love the universe that the author created and how the fans interact with it, but I don't like the actual canonical story. I have a lot of affection and interest in the supporting cast, which only makes me more bitter about the ML. In a better world, Luo Binghe became an ascetic, bald-headed monk, and SVSSS was a found family novel.

Honestly though, this novel hit me hard enough that I'm reluctant to finish any of this author's other highly praised novels. <<less

SVSSS was the second danmei I have ever read, evidently right after reading MDZS, and at that time I truly was in love with the novel. Unfortunately I cannot share the same sentiment now despite still holding quite fond feelings towards the story and its characters. This novel is objectively not very good and a lot of it is due to the romance between Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe, which ironically should have been the main selling point of the story.

The idea behind the novel was nothing new or original,... more>> but I am a sucker for good old villain transmigration story. And indeed, the story was truly quite interesting at keeping its readers excited and antsy during the arcs, with both genuinely good humour and relatively good world building; and if it was a traditional xianxia novel, I would not have any complaints towards the story whatsoever. The issue is however with the fact that SVSSS is above anything else a romance novel with reader's expectations of having the romance akin Erha's, when in fact the romance in the said plot was equivalent to what you would have seen in the yaoi manga produced in the late 90s and early 2000s.

The relationships between SQQ and LBH can be described as anything but romantic, with the ending leaving nothing but emptiness and bitterns, as well as pity towards SQQ. There were little to no hints regarding SQQ having feelings even remotely close to romantic towards LBH, and their eventual coupling up felt more like SQQ giving into Binghe's antics if anything. It wasn't funny nor certainly was it sweet. Especially the depictions of s*x which were used for the comedic purposes, were anything but fun, since to me personally it was hard to enjoy someone being physically inflicted with pain every time they have an interc**rse (and being explicitly told that SQQ was not enjoying himself) ; paired with LBH's disregard to SQQ's pain being portrayed as some sort of clumsiness and a running gag the readers were supposed to find cute. Once again, it was not.

Interestingly enough, it seems as if anyone who has ever read this novel perceives it as something it clearly wasn't, and I am afraid I was one of those people until I've reread SVSSS. It's almost as if everyone is under impression that the romance is about two silly people who are so desperately in love with each but cannot express their feelings towards each other due to both misunderstandings and obstacles on their way; with LBH being portrayed as this little innocent puppy who is smitten with his shizun, and SQQ being cold on the outside yet passionate on the inside due to constrains of the system. And while there is some degree of truth to it, it's not nearly as well executed or as sweet as everyone likes to believe it is.

Perhaps I am being too critical of SVSSS as it was MXTX's first work, nor should I place it into the same expectations I had for MDZS and HOB; but even as a stand alone novel it's not very good. The potential for this novel was so fantastic, yet it was unnecessarily wasted for what seems to be a poor attempt at a parody, if that's what it was even meant to be. It is pretty ironic that fanfiction writers for SVSSS do a far better job of conveying both romance and the comedy, but I digress. It is also equally sad that it is clear that MXTX knew how to write a good romance even during their first novel, since Liu Qingge's unrequited feelings were both so beautifully yet also so evidently portrayed without author having to say so out loud as narration was doing it for them.

By no means it is the worst novel that I have read, and if the romance aspect of this story wasn't so aggressively shovelled down my throat to the point of choking, I would've enjoyed the narration more than I did. On the positive note, this novel creates a fantastic ground for the fan-made content, which then can also be deceptive for the new readers expecting the novel being what it not actually is.

The fandom interpretation of this novel gives it more justice than whatever MXTX did narration wise, which is both the strongest and yet the weakest aspect of this work. <<less

I had read that LBH never finds out about SY!SQQ's original identity.

[collapse]
With this being said, after reading through the novel, I don't think this matters much.

Speaking of the characters...

SQQ, for the most part, is great. While there are times I wish he was... just a little less dense, I am glad he was the protagonist.

I don't know what I thought when I originally started the novel, but I ADORE LBH and I would defend him with my life. He's definitely my favorite MXTX gong.

Also... I actually love Bingqui's relationship?

Other than that, I think out of all of the MXTX novels, SVSSS has the most amount of side characters that I like. Off the top of my head, I can't think of one I despised?

The story was also just the right length. Short enough where I never felt like the story was wasting my time, and long enough where I could get s**ked into the world and fall in love the characters. <<less

Good novel in every aspect apart from its romance.

First of all, the good parts: the world building was solid, the side characters were intriguing. I personally LOVED liu qing ge's personality, he felt so well developed for a supporting character.

however, there are a couple of shortcomings, as some people have already mentioned in their own reviews. The most prominent one I've had problems with is the main couple, shen qingqiu's dynamic with Luo binghe. Luo binghe is quite literally... insane. He's not a good love interest in any way shape... more>> or form. He's a self destructive yandere who will mentally break down when SQQ shows him any sign of rejection. and he doesn't even get better. At the end of the novel, he still shows the SAME problems with his abandonment issues. Shen qingqiu X luo Binghe is not a dynamic built on love, more like mental illness, dependency, and responsibility.

another thing is the smut.
Spoiler

The first smut scene was so painfully written, and really just adds to the unhealthy relationship between LBH and SQQ. Why bother adding a blood sweat tears s*x scene that will make all your readers cringe? And every other smut scene after that is just... *facepalms*. SQQ's poor ass. I feel so bad for him.

in conclusion, s*um villain is a good novel, just not a good romance novel. <<less

Pros: I liked the MC Shen Qingqui (SQQ). The self-aware commentary he gives about the extremely common tropes found in this novel is pretty golden imo. The humor in this book made me laugh out loud which is rare for books to do for me. Additionally, I liked SQQ enough to be invested in seeing what would happen to him despite the issues I had with this novel. I really enjoyed some of the side characters, to the point that I ship one of them with the MC more than... more>> the ML because they genuinely have a better dynamic.

Cons: Although I do like SQQ, he went from able to hold his own in the beginning of the novel to being weak and controlled by the ML, which was frustrating. I just prefer my MCs to not be 'damsels in distress'.

I didn't like the ML, Luo Binghe (LBH). At. All. I hoped him and his relationship with the MC would improve but it never did enough for me to find the ending satisfying. SQQ never seems to like LBH, and LBH's "love" for SQQ is obsession with no substance. Not a dynamic I'm a fan of. SQQ appears to feel like more of a babysitter for LBH than anything. Again, I found myself wanting SQQ to end up with someone else.

Additionally, despite what another reviewer states, there is a scene in this novel in which LBH r*pes SQQ. It's fairly graphic and very disturbing. I ended up having to skip over it. The scenes in the extras are better but still some dubcon there.

Overall, if you're a fan of MXTX it's worth giving this novel a shot. There are parts of this novel to enjoy, it had funny moments and some likeable side characters. Don't go into it expecting anything similar to her other novels. The vibe of this one is very different and much more lighthearted overall. It's also her first novel so keep that in mind. <<less
