The story is fine, but there is so much internalized misogyny and simple misogyny in general that it became a task to read through it till the end. Sure, the FL had character development but that was done within the first 10 chapters. Afterwards, she prospered and soared in a career she had no real, practical experience in whatsoever. But we are told constantly how great she is in everything she does—be it cooking, keeping a home, designing a home/house, photography and negotiating while the narrative always undermines other women.... more>> She is good because she is not "power-hungry" or "ambitious" like other women. Yet, the author has shown that she is gets constant help from the ML, though she never asked for it herself but that doesn't erase the fact that she still did receive it. Then, why is the ML's ex-wife undermined constantly for getting the same—just because she asked for that help? FL is idealized by everyone be it for her perfect character or her perfect looks which we are reminded of constantly in every chapter. In those villainess stories she would have been labeled as a white lotus—though even this tag is problematic in and of itself.

The following are direct quotes from the story:

Spoiler

Lu Zhan sent a series of ellipses in response—a silent expression of helplessness.

A polite and well-mannered woman who didn't try to climb social ladders was rare in their circle. If it were someone else, they would have definitely tried to gain more resources.

He couldn't help but think about how Wen Yang wasn't the type of girl easily swayed. She wasn't like other women — there was no obvious ambition or ulterior motive. Judging by her clothes, bags, and accessories, she chose what suited her rather than what was expensive. She neither envied what others had nor yearned for luxury.

A girl like her probably came from a good family, raised with love and care. She had her own sense of self. Winning her heart would definitely require patience.

Her skin was as smooth as jade, her long, slightly curled eyelashes resting gently on her cheeks, a delicate nose, and lips tinged with a soft jelly-like pink — soft, like a little rabbit.

She was probably the woman who wore the least makeup out of everyone he had ever met.

Fragile, yet full of spirit - and not lacking in wisdom.

—the author is acting as if a woman with ambition is an abomination to the world.

[collapse]

I like fluffy romance stories with good, strong FLs, however, if her qualities can only shine through the undermining of other women then it is an impossible read.

'Though, the plot itself is fine and can even be enjoyable if you can overlook these issues. <<less

Honestly, I didn't have the best impression of Wen Yang in the beginning. She seemed almost childlike, because she was overly dependent on her husband, Cheng Yanyu. She would call CY crying because she was afraid of thunderstorms and if she had a minor cut, and then she freaked out when the power went out in her house. While I understand phobias aren't rational, none of her fears were explained and there were times I felt like she couldn't function without CY. Her entire life was devoted to him. She... more>> didn't have a job and no real hobbies so she would just cook and sit at home waiting for him to return from work. However, she surprised me when she found out CY was cheating. Once she realized she couldn't forgive or forget the affair, she let him go much quicker than I expected. After the divorce she truly started to blossom and grow as a person.

The ML, Fu Xingzhou, was there to witness the change in her. I understood why he fell for her in the end. After WY's divorce, she didn't become bitter or mad at the world. Instead, she picked herself up and became a businesswoman. She stopped putting her life on hold and started really living, and even when she got with FX, she didn't fall back into the same habits of becoming dependent or losing herself. When she was afraid to open her heart to him, he was patient with her and in return, she stood by his side when he needed it most. WY was a genuinely kind, thoughtful person and seeing how she acted with FX, I really can't understand why CY cheated. I can only assume he strayed because he saw something shiny and new and wondered "what if".

Spoiler

Though FX's wife, Li Man, was no victim, I understood why she at least cheated. They had a marriage of convenience, and he didn't love her. LM was jealous of the love CY showed his wife and decided to seduce and take that happiness for herself.

[collapse]

FX was definitely a step up for WY and not just because of his wealth. FX was steadfast in his love for WY. He was supportive and his relationship seemed more like a partnership than WY's past relationship. With CY, she gave and gave, but with FX it was more of a give and take. I think them being happy together was the best revenge they could've gotten on their exes. <<less

The author managed to really capture the emotions and turmoil of a marriage breaking down due to (emotional) cheating. How it starts small, get bigger and diverts the people. How it exhausts the betrayed partner - feeling suspicious but not being able to really pinpoint why.

The breakdown of the FL was so heartbreaking (I honestly got anxiety reading it) but simultaneously the way she fought for herself and her self-worth and was able to walk away with her head high was beautiful.

At the beginning the FL was really delicate and... more>> (for my preferences) a little bit bland, her life was just how its supposed to be and she never really strove for more than a happy family and marriage (completely fair btw) and this resulted in her being completely and utterly depended on her husband. Until her husband one day got fascinated with a confident career women. She realized something was off and managed to test him several times until she just couldn't bear it any more. This made her have a hard look at her life and think about what she really wants in her life and what is important to her.

The ML is older, successful and at the beginning utterly uninterested in the FL or any other women, for that matter. They kind of bond because of the shared betrayal and the ML (only at the very beginning) pities the FL but is later impressed with her drive and ability to get out of her depression. Later the two of the get closer and the ML is very straightforward with his feelings. The way they go about this is very healthy and mature (especially because its kind of awkward bc of their ex-spouses). He knows what he wants, hes honest to himself and to the people he cares about. It was very refreshing. <<less

Emotional start followed by a peaceful, mature and slice of life romance.

The beginning is the most exciting and emotionally charged part of the story. It's a mounting dread as the reader sees the cracks before Wen Yang does and is just waiting for the fallout. The rest of the story is mainly Wen Yang rebuilding and falling in love with Fu Xingzhou. It's really not very dramatic overall but there are still enough moments, mainly when the exes come into play.

I really like the male lead Fu Xingzhou. Realistically, I... more>> think he's the most attractive type in real life. Steadfast, dedicated and attentive to the one he loves. At every stage, he maintains the boundaries of their relationship and only advances with explicit permission. Confident in himself, never takes our jealousy on Wen Yang and some moments of vulnerability to make him human.

Wen Yang is also likeable enough. She's very gentle but faced with the dissolution of her marriage, has to grow up a bit. She takes her time to think things through but as long as she makes her mind up that's it.

If you enjoy relationships between two adults who know what they want and act like adults it's nice to read

The best revenge is living well and Wen Yang doesn't bother about her ex-husband and his mistress. They make enough of their own mistakes.

The only thing I dislike is the emphasis earlier on on how Wen Yang is different from other women who normally are interested in Fu Xingzhou. It's an annoying focus on purity (in the material sense) that the novel didn't need. <<less

Easy, enjoyable, read. Nothing stressful nor heavy.

The couple's relationship is steady and there's no nonsense. After the affair was discovered and after the divorce, you won't see much of their exes. The novel is truly about FL herself and her relationship with ML. Not about revenge. Just FL realizing herself. Not finding, cos I don't think she truly was lost, but just growing into herself more.

Something I really like about this novel is FL's growth and along with that, her great support system. Her parents are great, her friends are... more>> great, her ex's friend is great, her ex's parents are great, her new in-laws are great, and most of all, ML is great. They're not godly and imperfect, but they're realistically good and genuine human beings.

Truly, the only odd apples given some sort of screentime in are the pair of cheating s*umbags LOL <<less

So far so good, but cheating stories are never for me. It's one thing if it's a revenge story where one party showed complete disregard for their partner. This one is messy, emotionally, because these two people were so in love and it's all ruined over one mistake. The husband did wrong, for sure, but I'm a softie and he clearly shows remorse so part of me feels bad for him, and I don't want to see his pity party.

Oh well.

I'm really only here for the romance with the ML,... more>> so hopefully there's not a lot of mention of her past relationship moving forward. <<less
