When Fu Nian first met Chu Zhaoyi, the late emperor was still alive, and Chu Zhaoyi was still a Wangye.

But at their first meeting, Fu Nian experienced the ferocity of this future ruler.

A cacophony rang in his mind, and as the metallic tang of blood flowed along his numbed skin, Fu Nian heard that devilish voice tell him,

“Thunder and rain, all are the grace of a ruler. Just a bit of thunder, and you’re reduced to such a state.”

Later, he would hear these words again, but it would be a long time later.

“Thunder and rain, all are the grace of a ruler,” Chu Zhaoyi pronounced deliberately by Fu Nian’s ear.

With the remnants of his strength, Fu Nian struggled to suppress a sob, “Your Majesty, such thunder and rain, this humble subject… truly doesn’t deserve.”

[Opening in November] Fu Nian’s first life ended due to poison.

Sensing his impending fate, he believed that the heart-connecting gu inside him was planted by a pitiable scapegoat, ordered by the ruler. Not wanting to implicate innocent people, he forcefully removed the gu from his heart, gasping his last breath only after handing it to the Imperial Guards.

After death, Fu Nian realized that the one who had planted the heart-connecting gu wasn’t anyone else, but Chu Zhaoyi, the one above ten thousand others. He thought of Chu Zhaoyi as heartless and merciless, someone who didn’t trust him, let alone love him.

Only in death did Fu Nian know that his master, who had plucked him from the pile of corpses and nurtured him, didn’t treat him as a disposable pawn, but genuinely cared for him. After Fu Nian’s death, his master went madly searching for medicine, going so far as to use living people as ingredients, all to save Fu Nian’s life.

His Senior Brother, too, surprised him. Fu Nian had thought that their last meeting before parting ways was the night his Senior Brother gifted him a sword.

Little did he expect that the one keeping their childhood sword manuals was his Senior Brother, and the one keeping the birthday gift he sent was also his Senior Brother. And after his death… it was his Senior Brother who clung to the jar containing the heart-connecting gu that he had dug out, crying uncontrollably.

But what surprised Fu Nian the most was Chu Zhaoyi.

He never thought that Chu Zhaoyi, whom he believed never truly loved him.

Would, after his death, hold onto his already stiffened body, gently place the phoenix crown and red wedding robes he never dared dream of onto him, kiss him devoutly over and over again, and even, like they did in their lifetime, sleep side by side through the night.

Awakening from a deep slumber, Fu Nian discovers a chance to rectify all the regrets of his previous life.

Everything is still within reach.

[Warning: Protagonist with prosthetic limbs!!! Warning: Offspring anticipated!!!] The cover features Fu Nian’s character design.

With a cold exterior but a warm heart, a ruthless monarch finds himself entangled with a stunningly beautiful and seemingly insane individual who is devoted and submissive to only one person, while showing no mercy as the commander of a ruthless group of shadow guards.

The timeline progresses linearly, with no time-traveling involved; the protagonist’s body remains his own throughout.

This is a very interesting novel, but it can be confusing at first because the MC comes back a year after dying, and we can only keep reading to know what happened before. Only around chapters 50-60 do things become slightly clearer, but the pacing of the stories and the constant twists and turns should be enough to keep you entertained.

I'll put a small warning here, since its not in the tags: there are depictions of cruelty in this novel. Life and human rights are acuratelly depicted according to the... more>> society these characters are living in, which means many instances of death and torture lightly mentioned and not given almost any regards to.

Asides from that, this novel may seem a bit bland or repetitive, but it's good for a light read (in the sense that it is a quick read) and I think the foreshadowing is pretty good too.

In this novel, the characters emotions are rarely explicit. We can see the actions the characters are taking, but we're not sure what is the driving emotion behind them. There are a few scenes where you can feel how pained and tired MC is, but there are also scenes where it seems like nothing happened at all. (Like, seriously)

On to the characters:

MC is the shou, and he was completely the standardized loyal guard dog of the emperor before rebirth, but he is trying to change (without much success, I must add). His character is mostly somber or taciturn but sometimes a flare of softness or very small playfulness shines through. He hides any vulnerability deep inside, and is quick to react physically to the changes around him, even if he tries not to.

Spoiler

I should mention here that MC can get pregnant (for some reason) and is currently (as of chapter 61) starting to show symptoms

[collapse]

I usually don't like the above at all (in terms of personal preference when choosing my reads) but I decided to give it a shot this time (in spite of the summary warning) because, like I said before, I find the premise of this novel very interesting.

The ML... he seemed like a cardboard character until about chapter 59-60, where he actually shows an emotion aside from anger and coldness. He's the Emperor, possessive, overbearing, gone mad with too late grief and regret, etc etc. His melancholic or sick moments are well written, but still quite shallow. I've only read up to this part, so we'll see how it goes.

The relationship between the two is very toxic, like it typically happens when the involved are an Emperor and his shadow guard. As of now, nothing seems to be changing in that aspect but, again, we'll see how it goes. <<less

Lazy Girl translations are always good and have wife chasing and drama.

ML and MC relationship is quite sweet. I like that it features a disabled MC and he doesn't get OP stuff to make it go away. Happy ending. There's quite a few mystical stuff and backstory which is handwaved away but overall wraps up well.

Tags very valid, but it's a pretty interesting, if rather expected lay of how an emperor + shadow guard misunderstandings novel plays out. Still an interesting read to follow the MC as he tries to figure out the events leading up to and past his death and how his revival came to be. I did get confused at the end, not sure if I missed anything b/c was having issues w/ website, but I felt like there were a few key questions that were left hanging. That being said, ending... more>> (like last 15% ish of novel) is pretty sweet and honestly feels more like the couple is finally learning more of how to be a couple. But sheer lack of communication... *sigh*, though it actually feels rather in character rather than the annoying Mary-Sue novels. <<less

On the romance side:

Our main couple goes through a lot of twists and turns, in part because both come from pretty screwed up backgrounds and have to fumble around with issues like proper communication and boundaries. The MC is better at this than the ML, but then the ML is the Emperor. So this gets resolved pretty satisfactorily.

The couple's relationship outside of the romance:

To me, this was not satisfactorily resolved. There were constant hints that the MC wanted to be more involved in the ML's life. ... more>>
Spoiler

That he felt left out and side lined before he died, yet the situation when he came back seemed just as bad if not worse except for being chained up. He's not allowed to know about state affairs, not allowed to actually run the shadow guards even though he's the titular head. He occasionally gets to kill people if the Emperor points them out but - big deal, that's what he was doing before. He just accepted being nothing but a bedwarmer and trainer for all the other shadow guards this time around.

[collapse]
The ML got his way in everything.

On the plot side:

This was frustrating. I couldn't tell if the author was trying to set up an intricate plot, didn't know how to follow through and just dropped the threads right and left - or just started certain story lines to advance the romance and strung them together as they went along. Either way, the result was a Swiss cheese story.
Spoiler

The villain may have died. No resolution for the heart gu. The young man the MC rescued miraculously got better and disappeared. Senior Brother ran off. No explanation about the soul incense of the Master's partner or what secret it held... and on and on.

[collapse]

The only really interesting thing in this story is how accepting it is of people with disabilities, since the MC has a prosthetic arm and leg but the Emperor still things he's still the most attractive guy on the planet. <<less

It's such a great novel. I don't get why it's low in review but it was the right touch of crazy, romance and politics. You know in those times a shadow guard was a sacrificial solider.

This story should have the tag "unreliable narrator" XD

Most of the story is from MC pov and if you pay attention you can see that some descriptions and declarations are hesitant and depends in MC's own knowledge and mind set.

Thankfully, it's not 100% MC pov so you can guess when he is deceived or misunderstanding things.

... more>> But about misunderstanding, the story revolves around one or two.

Actually, they are not really misunderstandings since its not because of bad timings or half heard informations, but more because of a lack of communication. But it's okay if you don't like this kind of story since the main part isn't happening during the time of miscommunication. And the reason of the miscommunication is understandable.

It's an OK story for me because I hate stories with the plot depending on misunderstanding and miscommunication, but I still enjoyed it so I think it deserves 4 stars.

BUT the last 2 or 3 chapters are more similar to extras and should have be labeled as such.

Anyway, good story. <<less

The story is good. Its slow burn but not really. Because the MC and ML have already connected by the past. We could glimpse into the past through conversation. Not many flashbacks. What makes me so annoyed is the author makes the MC so dense. Its frustating. MC is supposed to be a top notch assassin. But, why the author makes him as if he was a high schooler??? So dense. Not even could think logically.

I understand that the misunderstanding in the past happened because ML was immature jerk. He... more>> is psychologically unstable but immature nonetheless.

But I guess the misunderstanding and wife chasing thrope is done to make the story progress. <<less
