“Sheriel Beriard, I hereby annul our engagement as of today.”

Sheriel was a somewhat peculiar baby who only dreamed of ‘death.’

In her previous life, she was a freelance programmer. In her future life, she would be a condemned, defective noble daughter. In her current life, she was being sold as a baby s*ave…

She was taken in by a genius clan referred to as demons, known for their ethical low point. Her hazardous affectionate life and antisocial daily routine began. This is the story of an “ordinary girl” trying to avoid death flags while dealing with troublesome family members.

…Or so it was supposed to be. Life isn’t that sweet.

Magic, impurity, subjugation, rituals, abduction, captivity, spirits, business, sparkles, brainwashing, battles… Anything is possible in this fantasy world.

**TRANSLATOR'S REVIEW**

"The Sleeping Devil" is an interesting story that mixes reincarnation, magic, power, and modern life. The main character's unique situation, where she knows about her past and current life, makes her more complex.

The way her two sides interact adds depth to her growth. The story takes us into a mix of fantasy and reality.

... more>> The start of the story is attention-grabbing with its setup, memories, and the Dark Auction setting. The mix of fantasy and modern stuff is cool.

Sheriel's broken engagement reveals a lot. She's a Demon clan member with no magical abilities, and that makes her an outsider in a world where power is important. The teacher's part makes things more interesting. Their actions show there's more to know. When the teacher seems to harm Sheriel, it makes us wonder why.

In short, the story shows Sheriel's complicated life and relationships. There's politics, personal problems, and surprises that make it a good read. <<less

My first impression on this story is just a reincarnated girl who's trying to survive and avoid death flags using her memories from her past lives. Although it's definitely true, that one is just a small part of the whole story. The whole story revolves on the relationship and lives of the main characters. That seems boring to look at a whole but it's actually interesting, since the main characters are always on the scheming side.

I didn't notice first that the story has a shoujo-fantasy setting. Like those villainess story... more>> where it revolves on academy. It's not tagged as one though, and that might be because it's not focused on romance nor the whole story just revolves around the academy.

The demons and devils here are just labels and not really an actual race. The Beriard family who are called demons are just genius humans devoid of empathy except for their family. Each of them also have their own obsession. The MC, Sheriel was adopted to such kind of family and she too will be treated as a real family for them. Despite not wanting too, Sheriel will catch the different values of her family and you'll be able to see that she is really one of the Beriard family.

Sheriel, Didier (her brother), and Julius (her teacher) form a trio that can move the whole country. Everything that happens in the story revolves around the three. Especially Julius who is full of mysteries. Those mysteries will be revealed one by one, but they seem unending until the last arc. Whenever the trio moves, it affected a lot of people, and it's interesting how much their action changes lots of things.

The development are really something to look forward here, especially the big moments that will come. Another kind of development to look forward for is the character development of some side characters. I love it, although not all might agree, but it's superb to see how the main characters influenced others to change.

This novel includes a lot of things like business, beauty, politics, magic, academy battle, brainwashing and manipulation. I don't think I was able to say all I wanted, but I can only tell to you that this is a novel worth spending time to read. I love reading each chapters, the schemes of the trio and the effect of their actions.

Spoiler

It's not until the last arc that I understand the meaning of the title. The beginning chapters of that last arc is dark and depressing that it's hard to read.

A masterpiece of exposition.

Translation: Excellent! There is almost no inconsistencies. Only those looking for them will find them, but should not even get mad over it because of how good the overall writing is.

Exposition: The author is a master at exposing information to the reader in an entertaining way. "Subtext is king" and this author has mastered that saying. A paragraph that should feel like info-dump is actually delivered in a way where you want to read it. You want to know more because the author frames subtext into a... more>> puzzle that you want to solve. Ultimately, it's subjective, but I needed to point out how good this is.

Setting: Instead of rushing things, the author takes time to expose a small setting (the mansion as of v1c13) and thus allowing us to connect more with the characters in that setting.

Characters: It's subjective as always, but overall I like them. I specially like how MC is slowly bonding with that family of psychopaths and changing them for the better. <<less
